Notes: Had an automatic shifter. Came out of nowhere to win Maple Grove using a unique automatic transmission. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Don attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 7.71/178.57 was good for the first alternate. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.63/181.08 qualified #12. A 7.74/179.79 in the first round, lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.55/181. Beverly qualified in the dreaded #9 spot at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 7.63/180.57. The #9 spot was dreaded because you had to run the #1 qualifier in the first round. Warren Johnson qualified #1, and sure enough, he beat Don in the first round. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Beverly qualified on the "bump" with a 7.71/179.74. He slowed to an 8.04/144.88 in the first round, that lost to Don Coonce's 7.79/176. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, where he 7.73/180.25 best was the third alternate for the show. Things were much better at the NHRA Grandnationals, where he ran 7.64/180.72 to qualify #8. A 7.70/180.14 beat Frank Iaconio's 7.77/178 in the first round, but he fouled away a 7.79 against Bruce Allen in round two. He qualified #9 again at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.54/181.52 but lost to low qualifier Bob Glidden in the first round. Another non-qualifier came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Dever. There, Don's 8.14/168.41 best was the first alternate. He rebounded by qualifying #7 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 7.69/181.08. Unfortunately, he lost to Jerry Eckman in the first round. Beverley ran great at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 7.53/182.92. A 7.63/182.30 beat Joe Clark's quicker 7.59/179 in the first round. In round two, a 7.58/182.29 beat Don Campanello, sending him into the semifinals for the first time in '86. There, he ran into eventual winner Glidden. Don ran a strong 7.53/182.96 but lost to Bob's 7.41/189. The next event showed that Don Beverly was for real. It was at Maple Grove on September 14 for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Don qualified #4 with a strong 7.48/184.99. A 7.60/184.80 advanced past a fouling Eckman in round one, while in round two, his 7.49/184.88 advanced when Butch Leal fouled against him. Coonce's 7.73/163 fell behind in the semifinals as Beverly moved into the final with a 7.50/184.38. In the final, he met Allen in the Reher-Morrison Camaro. Don was not the underdog in the final, as Allen had run a 7.51 best in eliminations. Don scored his first-ever NHRA Pro Stock win in the final with a 7.54/184.42 over Bruce's 7.57/184.

Notes: Don attempted to qualify at Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals. There were 47 cars on hand trying to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Beverley's best of 7.58/181.92 was good for the fifth alternate. Things were even worse at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 7.61/184.91 was the thirteenth alternate. He was one of the ten Pro Stocks to be invited to race at the NHRA Winston All-Stars race at the Texas Motorplex. The Pro categories featured eight-car fields, and unfortunately for Don, his best of 7.54/182.11 was good for the second alternate. Beverley's bad luck continued at the NHRA Southern Nationals. He was the twelfth alternate there with a 7.64/181.37 best. The story was the same at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 7.72/183.52 was the fifth alternate for the show. Even though he was not making the shows, the competition was tough in the Pro Stock class, with almost 50 cars showing up for some shows. Don was just a little off in the horsepower department, but he was very close to breaking through. He was the sixth alternate at the NHRA Springnationals, running a 7.69/179.49 best. He did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but he was at Englishtown for the Summernationals, where his 7.63/180.32 best was the eleventh alternate. He also skipped going to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Beverley's next stop was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He ended up as the twelfth alternate with a 7.78/178.14 best. Everyone wants to run well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, and Don was no exception. But with 52 cars attempting to make the sixteen-car field, there are bound to be more unhappy faces than smiling ones. Beverley was disappointed as his 7.64/183.33 was just the nineteenth alternate. Don ran his best ET at Ennis Fall, but his 7.485/182.26 was the ninth alternate in the field. Don also did not qualify at Phoenix Fall and the World Finals. His 184.91 from Gainesville was his best speed of the year.

Notes: What a difference a year makes. At the '89 Winternationals, Don qualified #1 with a 7.33, but at Pomona for the '90 event, his best of 7.40/187.50 was good for the first alternate. He failed to qualify at the next few NHRA races, the Arizona Nats, where another 7.40 at 186.10 was the second alternate, and at the Super Nationals at Baytown (where his 7.40/186.48 was the twelfth alternate). Another 7.40 at 186.02 (second alternate) missed the show at the Gatornationals. He was the fifth alternate at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational with a 7.40/186.64, and he failed to make the cut in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, where he was the eighth alternate at 7.36/187.96. His best times of the year were 7.310/188.20 at NHRA Ennis Fall.

Notes: Beverley was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #9. In the first round, he lost to Mark Pawuk. At Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified well and then ran 7.37/186.68 in the opening round of eliminations to beat Steve Schmidt's 7.48/185. In the second round, his 7.51/185.56 lost to Tony Christian's 7.37/186. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Supernationals. Don ran 7.30 to qualify #9, and in round one, he beat Joe Lepone. He improved to 7.28/185.63 in round two to stop Jim Yates' 7.32/187, and he ran an even better 7.27/187.77 in the semifinal, but it wasn't enough to get around Scott Geoffrion's 7.23/189. After running so well, it was surprising to see his name among the non-qualifiers at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He did much better at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, where his 7.29/188.63 qualified #12. In the opening round, an off-pace 7.40/187.11 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.33/188. He just got into the show at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 7.38/186.78 got him the #15 spot in the field. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #10 with a 7.30/190.71. A first-round 7.28/190.51 beat Jerry Haas and in round two, a quick off-the-line 7.36/189.71 beat Larry Morgan's quicker 7.32/188. In the semifinals, he beat Jim Yates with a 7.33/190.63, putting him in the finals against Jerry Eckman. Jerry had been running about a tenth quicker, and in the final, Beverley had problems and shut off to 7.77/137.95, while Eckman got the victory with a 7.26/190. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Don qualified #9 with a 7.21/192.84. Unfortunately, he fouled against Yates in the first round. He really improved his qualifying at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 7.16/194.09 for the #4 spot in the field. But once again, he lost early, this time to Lewis Worden in the first round. Don qualified #7 at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational with a 7.24/191.61. He improved to a 7.22/191.93 in his first-round win over Mark Pawuk, while in round two, a 7.26/191.28 took out Scott Geoffrion's 7.31/189. He lost a close race to Warren Johnson in the semifinals when his 7.24/191.44 lost to WJ's 7.22/192. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. Beverley got his second National event win and his first since '86. He qualified #3 for the show with a 7.23/192.43 and ran 7.25/191.57 over Joe LePone Jr. in the first round. A second-round 7.21/191.24 beat Smith, and another 7.21 at 191.44 in the semifinals beat Pawuk. In the final, he ran Geoffrion. Scott shut off with problems while Don motored to a 7.20/191.49 for the victory. It was then off to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, where he qualified #2 with a 7.25/191.00. He was still riding high after the win at Atlanta but was humbled in the first round, when he lost to Lucinda McFarlin. Don dropped off to a 7.44/191.12 that lost to her 7.34/188.95.

Notes: Don qualified #2 behind his boss, Warren Johnson, at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. WJ got the pole with a 7.16/194 while Don's 7.17/193.63 followed. Unfortunately, he lost to WJ's son Kurt Johnson in his Pro Stock debut who got a slight holeshot and ran 7.23/191 to beat Beverley's quicker 7.21/192.67. WJ and Beverley qualified one-two at the next NHRA race as well, the Arizona Motorcraft Nationals. Once again Warren qualified #1 at 7.21/192 while Don's 7.23/191.53 held for second. He improved to 7.18/192.51 to beat Frank Iaconio's 7.27/190 in the first round. In the second round, another holeshot, this time by Larry Morgan stopped his advance. Larry won with a 7.23/189 over Don's 7.21/192.10.
