Notes: Had an automatic shifter. Came out of nowhere to win Maple Grove using a unique automatic transmission. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Don attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 7.71/178.57 was good for the first alternate. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.63/181.08 qualified #12. A 7.74/179.79 in the first round, lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.55/181. Beverly qualified in the dreaded #9 spot at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 7.63/180.57. The #9 spot was dreaded because you had to run the #1 qualifier in the first round. Warren Johnson qualified #1, and sure enough, he beat Don in the first round. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Beverly qualified on the "bump" with a 7.71/179.74. He slowed to an 8.04/144.88 in the first round, that lost to Don Coonce's 7.79/176. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, where he 7.73/180.25 best was the third alternate for the show. Things were much better at the NHRA Grandnationals, where he ran 7.64/180.72 to qualify #8. A 7.70/180.14 beat Frank Iaconio's 7.77/178 in the first round, but he fouled away a 7.79 against Bruce Allen in round two. He qualified #9 again at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.54/181.52 but lost to low qualifier Bob Glidden in the first round. Another non-qualifier came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Dever. There, Don's 8.14/168.41 best was the first alternate. He rebounded by qualifying #7 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 7.69/181.08. Unfortunately, he lost to Jerry Eckman in the first round. Beverley ran great at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 7.53/182.92. A 7.63/182.30 beat Joe Clark's quicker 7.59/179 in the first round. In round two, a 7.58/182.29 beat Don Campanello, sending him into the semifinals for the first time in '86. There, he ran into eventual winner Glidden. Don ran a strong 7.53/182.96 but lost to Bob's 7.41/189. The next event showed that Don Beverly was for real. It was at Maple Grove on September 14 for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Don qualified #4 with a strong 7.48/184.99. A 7.60/184.80 advanced past a fouling Eckman in round one, while in round two, his 7.49/184.88 advanced when Butch Leal fouled against him. Coonce's 7.73/163 fell behind in the semifinals as Beverly moved into the final with a 7.50/184.38. In the final, he met Allen in the Reher-Morrison Camaro. Don was not the underdog in the final, as Allen had run a 7.51 best in eliminations. Don scored his first-ever NHRA Pro Stock win in the final with a 7.54/184.42 over Bruce's 7.57/184.

He was one of the ten Pro Stocks to be invited to race at the NHRA Winston All-Stars race at the Texas Motorplex. The Pro categories featured eight-car fields, and unfortunately for Don, his best of 7.54/182.11 was good for the second alternate. Beverley's bad luck continued at the NHRA Southern Nationals. He was the twelfth alternate there with a 7.64/181.37 best. The story was the same at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 7.72/183.52 was the fifth alternate for the show. Even though he was not making the shows, the competition was tough in the Pro Stock class, with almost 50 cars showing up for some shows. Don was just a little off in the horsepower department, but he was very close to breaking through. He was the sixth alternate at the NHRA Springnationals, running a 7.69/179.49 best. He did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but he was at Englishtown for the Summernationals, where his 7.63/180.32 best was the eleventh alternate. He also skipped going to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Beverley's next stop was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He ended up as the twelfth alternate with a 7.78/178.14 best. Everyone wants to run well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, and Don was no exception. But with 52 cars attempting to make the sixteen-car field, there are bound to be more unhappy faces than smiling ones. Beverley was disappointed as his 7.64/183.33 was just the nineteenth alternate. Don ran his best ET at Ennis Fall, but his 7.485/182.26 was the ninth alternate in the field. Don also did not qualify at Phoenix Fall and the World Finals. His 184.91 from Gainesville was his best speed of the year.
