Notes: Ronda's Hilborn injected 427 SOHC used aluminum cylinder heads. He started the season using steel rods, but later switched to aluminum rods from M/T. The pistons were also supplied by M/T. The popular choice of cams used by SOHC Ford runners was the Crane Nitro 600's and Ronda also used them. The car weighed in at 2,100 lbs. | Won the Super Stock (Fuel) title at the 1966 AHRA Championships with a 9.25/156.79. Gas won unlimited Funny Car at the Bakersfield March Meet, running an unreal 8.96 for Low ET. In the final, a 9.18/155.44 beat Tom McEwen's "Hemi-Cuda" at 9.31/173. Shortly after that, (March 5), he was at Lions for a match race against Ronnie Sox. In their first race, they both ran 9.91 (the Mustang at 154.37), but Ronda reached the stripe first. Gas went on to win the match over Sox. He made three exhibition passes at Irwindale on March 20 with runs of 9.16/155.44, a 9.27/153.32, and a 9.05/157.95. On April 9, Lions held a best of three match with Ronda facing the "Corvette Auto Parts" car. Gas took the match with three straight wins running best times of 9.04/161. Ronda was supposed to run Norm Cowdrey in a best of three match at Lions on April 30, but Ford recalled his Mustang to strengthen the roll bar. He ran an interesting match race at Irwindale on May 21. He was to have raced Jim Liberman in the "Brutus" GTO, but in the first race, Gas won with a 10.02/153.58 while Jim ran 10.81/135, blew his motor and was unable to run. Ed Kohler took Jim's place and beat Gas in the second race with a 9.42/144 to the Mustang's 9.49/154.90. In the final race, Ed's 10.77/140 won when Ronda blew an engine. He had more of a normal match race against Dick Landy on June 4 at Puyallup Dragway. In the best two-out-of-three, he won two straight with 9.87 and 9.32/152.28 passes. Landy got him back one week later (June 11) at Irwindale when he won a match race over Ronda. Hayden Proffitt met Ronda at Lions on July 9 for a best of three match and Gas' 9.20/157.89 and 9.14 times beat Proffitt two straight. He won Top Stock Eliminator at the AHRA Championships at Lions on July 24 with a final round 9.25/155.97 beating Proffitt's Corvair at 9.38/148. Another match race was run at Lions on August 16; this time, he faced Dale Armstrong. Gas won two straight with times of 9.06/156.25 and 9.04/158.45. On September 17, Charlie Allen fell to the Mustang at Irwindale in a best of three. Once again, Gas won two straight with times of 9.21/157.89 and 8.95/159.85. On October 9, Ronda faced "Brutus" again and this time, he lost the first-round with his 9.49/152.28 falling to the GTO's 9.26/158. Gas was able to come back and win the next two races and the match with times of 8.89/160.42 and 8.90/160.14. He was to face Allen in a match on October 15 at Irwindale, but during time trials Allen had the front end of his Dart blow off. The car was out of competition for the rest of the day, but Steve Bovan filled in. Ronda won the first race with a 9.14/156.53 over the "Studio Dodge" while Bovan got his Nova ready. In the second race, Ronda's transmission let go, and he slowed to a 14.36 loss to Steve's 9.37/144. In the final race, Gas beat Bovan with a 9.10/158.45 to win the match. At Lions' East-West meet, Ronda made it into the final of the unblown Funny Car class, but lost to Proffitt. He was back to his winning ways in December by beating Del Heinelt in the "Seaton's Shaker" at Irwindale two straight to win the match with an 8.72/161 best, and then beating Jim Liberman's new Nova at Fremont on December 18 in a best two-out-of-three match. Ronda's Mustang was a strong runner throughout the '66 season.

Notes: As the story has been told before, Gas Ronda began drag racing as a hobby. Ronda's doctor told him to find something to do in his spare time. I don't believe drag racing is what the doctor ordered. Ronda made his way through the Super Stock ranks until he got his first funny car in 1966, the Russ Davis Ford sponsored Mustang. The famed shop of Holman-Moody built the first Russ Davis Ford. That car was replaced by this Ron Scrima EE built car in 1967. Gas had a very professional approach to drag racing that made him popular with fans and the press alike. He won many races with the poppy red Mustang. The car ran times of 7.90/184.04 with an injected engine, despite the stock style body with removable front end and opening doors. By 1969, the car was outdated and was replaced by a newer LSC built Mustang that won the '69 OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. Confirmed 8.30/175.78, and 8.24/172.24 at OCIR Mfg. Notes: It was one of the last cars to put a blower on. The first time out was on June 29 at OCIR for a match race against the "Doug's Headers" Javelin, where he won three straight with a 7.95/184.04 best. He took a big win at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships on August 3. In the first round, he ran a 7.82/176.81 over a fouling Larry Fullerton. In the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.12/181.44 when Roger Wolford's Jeep lost fire. In the final, he was up against Dee Keaton's Cougar. The two SOHC Ford-powered cars ran with Gas collecting the win with an 8.15/176.12, beating Keaton's 8.24/178. On August 31, he won a race at OCIR, running a first-round 8.04/180.36 over Don Cullinan, and in the semifinal against Keaton, he lost, but Dee hurt his motor and couldn't make the final. Ronda got back in on the break rule and won with a 7.94/181.08 when Dave Beebe broke a trans. Ronda was at OCIR for a best of three match against Keaton on September 7. Dee won the first race, but Ronda ran 8.07/182 to win the second race. The final race was decided when the Cougar lost oil pressure, and Ronda singled for the win. At Irwindale's Ford vs. Mopar race on November 16, he won two of his three races with a 7.98/187.50 best. He also won two of his three races at the OCIR Manufacturers meet on December 1 with a best of 8.00/184.04, but on his third race against Leonard Hughes, he bounced off the guardrail twice. - RH

Notes: Gas started his season at an eight-car show at OCIR on January 14. He was the only non-supercharged car to qualify, and his 7.98/185 was good for the second position. This was also Ronda's first trip into the seven-second bracket. He beat Marv Eldridge's 8.18/176 in the first round, with an 8.19/174.08. In the semifinals, his 8.33/137.61 lost to low qualifier Jim Liberman's 8.02/181. On February 24, he competed at a sixteen-car show at Lions, and again, he was the only non-supercharged car to make the field. His 8.41 qualified #15, and in the first round, a holeshot 8.46/166.66 beat Randy Walls' quicker 8.20/175. He did it again in round two, with an 8.75/144.23 defeating Lew Arrington's 8.64/174. He met his match in the semifinals when Steve Bovan's 8.12/178 beat Ronda's 8.72/141.28. He went to Carlsbad the following day (February 25) for the South Coast Funny Car Championships. An 8.45/168.53 beat an out-of-shape Norm Cowdrey in the first round, but he could not run in the second round. In March, he faced off against Charlie Allen at OCIR for a best two out of three match race. Ronda won the first race, and Allen won the second, so for the match race win, Gas ran an 8.27 to beat Allen, who broke a transmission. On April 13, Ronda was at OCIR, but his Mustang broke on the line in the first round, against Randy Walls.

Notes: Ronda had an amazing late 1969 season. He won the 1969 Manufacturer's Meet, the Irwindale East-West Championships, and the Sears Point North-South event. Performance info from Drag Stat 1969. | Ronda debuted his new Mustang on April 26 at Irwindale for a 16-car show. He ran a 7.98 in qualifying and a first-round 8.12/187.50 beat Leroy Hales. In the second round, he lost to Clyde Morgan, but it was a good first showing for the new car. On May 3, he went to OCIR for their second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open. He qualified fourth with an 8.06/177.51 in the four-car Ford team and, in the first round, beat Dale Armstrong with an 8.29/176.12. An 8.20/181.08 lost to Gordon Mineo's 7.99/185 in his second race. Back at Irwindale for an eight-car show on May 17, he lost in the first round, to low qualifier (7.67) Dave Beebe, who ran Low ET and Top Speed of the meet against him in round one. A 7.62/200.00 beat Ronda's 8.21/185.18. In May, he did much better at Fremont, stopping Danny Ongais in the final and setting Top Speed of the meet at 192.30. On May 30 at Irwindale for an eight-car show, he got one back from Dave Beebe by running a first-round 7.81/185.18 over the Dodge Fever car. He lost to Ron Leslie in the Kenz and Leslie Cougar in the semis. At the NHRA Springnationals on June 15, he qualified #11 with an 8.13/189.07, but Tom McEwen's 7.63/185 dropped Ronda's ailing Mustang. He ran a best-of-three match race at Corpus Christi against Larry Christopherson's Nova. (Not sure who was driving Larry's car at the time, but it was probably Dean LaPole.) Ronda won the first race with an 8.60/144 over the out-of-shape Nova. He also won the second race and the match when the Nova's driver fouled in the second race. The third race saw the Nova win with an 8.10 over Ronda's 7.99/179. At Irwindale's Fourth of July Race, he qualified #5 with a 7.98 but lost early. The next day (July 5), he went to OCIR for their Nitro Championships, a 16-car field. Ronda qualified #7 with a 7.93 and a first-round 8.07/186.33 beat Leroy Hales in the New Breed at 8.58/184. Ongais' 7.49/191 beat his 7.84/195.22 in the second round. On July 19 at OCIR for the PDA Meet, Ronda's 7.82 qualified #5 in the 16-car field, and he beat Ed Lenarth (8.15) in the first round, with a 7.92. Beebe unloaded a 7.38 Low ET of the meet on Gas, who shut off to an 8.93 in round two. Ronda really opened some eyes on July 26 at Irwindale's Funny Car Open race. It was a sixteen-car show, and he ran a first-round 7.50/197.80 (Top Speed of the meet) over Mineo's 8.46/186. Another 197.80 in round two coupled up with a 7.49 beat Marv Eldridge's Javelin in round two. In the semifinal, a 7.76/193.12 beat the usually unbeatable Ongais, who had handling problems and shut off. In the final, a 7.78/191.88 beat Mike Snively for the title. Before this race, the car had run well, but not as well as one would expect with its Ed Pink-built motor. All Ronda had done before this race was to replace a shock and the Mustang came to life. The rest of the year, the car was a contender. He was runner-up at an eight-car show on August 10 at Woodburn's Funny Car Festival. He advanced past the first-round when Kenney Goodell's 'Cuda lost a rear end. In the semifinal, his 8.06 (Low ET of the meet) beat Ken Martin's Corvette. Steve Bovan beat Ronda in the final. On August 16 at Irwindale for a 16-car show, one week later, he set Low ET in the first round, with a 7.54/194.38 over Warren Gunter’s VW. He advanced to the semifinal with a 7.61/195.64 when Johnny Wright fouled in the Hellfire Corvette. He shut down on the line in the semis with problems, letting Gary Gabelich single into the final. On September 3, he and Charlie Allen staged a match race at Irwindale. Allen lost a transmission in his first race against Ronda in the best-of-three match but still won when the Mustang broke. In the second round, Charlie ran an 8.19/161 to win when a transmission let go in Ronda's car, giving the match to Allen in two straight wins. He won a race at Irwindale on September 21 over an eight-car field by qualifying #1 with a 7.70 and winning his first-round race over Ed Lenarth with a 7.72/193.54. In the semis, a 7.59/193.12 (Low ET of the meet) beat Frank Pisano, and a final round 7.60/191.88 beat Bovan's, Mister T Camaro. At OCIR on October 11 for the Funny Car Open event, Ronda's 7.65/195.65 qualified #3, but he hurt his engine and chose not to race. On October 18, it was back to Irwindale for the East/West Championships. All 16-cars ran the first-round, with the winners running for the title in bracket one, while the cars that lost in the first race were grouped into bracket two. Ronda lost his first race to Terry Hedrick's holeshot 7.56/192 that beat his quicker 7.52/197.10. Now racing in bracket two, he ran a second-round 7.40/200.88 over Don Schumacher (7.83/183), and in the semis, he singled when Wright's Corvette broke. In the bracket two final, his 7.44/202.24 beat Gene Snow's quicker 7.38/214. The following day (October 19), he went to Fremont for their Fallnationals, but he lost a motor in the final round against Rich Siroonian. Then came the win on November 2 at Sears Point's North/South Championships, where he beat Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian in the final. Gas didn't look very strong in qualifying on November 7 at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet when a 10.34 was the best he could do. And the next day didn't look any brighter when an 8.64 lost to Leonard Hughes' 7.49/197 in his first race. In his second race, a 10.58 advanced when Norm Weekly fouled away a 7.96/181. But the car came to life in the third round, setting Low ET at 7.26/200 over Pete Bagnard. In the final, his 7.47/199.56 beat Pat Minick's 7.48/202.70 in the Chi-Town Hustler. This was Ronda's biggest win of '69. He showed up at Irwindale on November 23 for a 32-car show but had driveline problems and lost in the first round. Notes: Dick Poll was hired to drive the Gas Ronda Mustang for '70. Not much news was made by the team, and it faded late in '70. Gas Ronda ran the Irwindale New Year's Day race and beat Dave Beebe in the first round with a 7.43/196.06. A second-round wheelstand ended his chances against Johnny Wright. At the first OCIR All-Pro race on January 4, Gas qualified eighth with a 7.60, but he blew his transmission, and non-qualifier Don Schumacher took his place in the race. At the second OCIR All-Pro race, Ronda was one of 27 drivers attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he failed to better the 7.57 "bump." On January 25 at the AHRA Winternationals, Ronda took his last ride in a Funny Car during qualifying; a transmission exploded near the end of a run, and he was severely burnt. He had third-degree burns to over 30% of his body. Ronda was taken to Orange Country Medical Centre. He survived, but that was it for Fuel Funny Cars for Gas Ronda. Jim Tice chose to hold a benefit race at Beeline Dragway on April 11 to help raise funds for Ronda. Tice's words, "It is inconceivable to me that a man that has made the contribution to our sport over the last ten years such as Gas Ronda has, should possibly wind up his career with only unpaid bills to show for it." Contributions poured in; the first was from Kelsey Producy=ts, who was not even a sponsor of Ronda's. Ed Pink donated to the cause, as did Anton Racing Apparel, Logghe Competition, Quaker State, Dow Chemicals, B&M Transmissions, Goodyear, Cyclone Automotive, Conelec Fuel Pump, Bill Hielscher and Associates, JR Headers, and Carter Carburetors. It was good to see such an outpouring of support for Ronda. | Ronda retired after a career-ending fire at the AHRA Winter Nationals at Beeline Dragway, Arizona. This occurred in January 1970.
