Notes: The Gapp and Roush team was running really well in '73, and the two thought that having two cars on the track might be the right thing to do. Jack Roush got behind the wheel of one of their Pintos and took it to Indianapolis for the NHRA Division 3 opener. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 9.57, and in the first round, he ran an even better 9.39/145.86 (Top Speed), but he was late off the line and lost to Rich Maskin's 9.41/142. The team took both cars to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Roush did well during qualifying, running 9.45 for the #9 spot in the sixteen-car field, and he even out qualified Wayne Gapp, who got the #10 spot with a 9.48. But in the first round, Roush's 9.50/145.63 lost to eventual winner Don Carlton's 9.46/145. Gapp did better lasting until the semifinals. They took both cars to Milan for the third NHRA Division 3 race. Roush qualified #5 and got to race low qualifier Don Carlton in the first round. Jack pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled. Gapp got revenge by winning the race and stopping Carlton in the final. Both also qualified at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Jack put his Pinto on the pole with a 9.13/148.02, but in the first round, the Pinto broke a rear end, and Bobby Yowell advanced. The team then split with Gapp going to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals while Roush went to York for the Super Stock Nationals. Jack's 9.18/151.26 (Top Speed) qualified #3 for the sixteen-car show, and an opening-round 9.15/150.00 beat Frank Iaconio. But in the second round, Jack got off the line behind Scott Shafiroff, and his 9.35/148.76 failed to catch Scott's 9.37/145. His driving career was halted at St. Louis. There he qualified #4 with a 9.15. A 9.12 in the first round, beat Royce Freeman, and in round two, Jack beat a fouling Joe Satmary with a strong 9.04/150. He improved to 9.02/150 in the semifinals while beating Gary Kimball, but the car got loose and rolled several times at the top end of the track. It was destroyed, and Roush was taken to the hospital with a broken arm.

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. This car had a very short lifespan. Don Hardy built the car which used quick-release body panels. The Gapp and Roush built engine used Brooks rods and pistons, a General Kinetics cam, and twin Holley Dominators on an Edelbrock tunnel ram manifold. The heads, of course, were also done by Gapp and Roush. The rear end was a Ford 9" with 5.67 gears. | The "Gapp and Roush" team debuted their new Mustang II at the NHRA Gatornationals in March. Jack Roush drove it while Wayne Gapp drove the team's Pinto. As shown in the picture, he had the rear window blow out at speed on its first run. They grabbed a replacement off a rent-a-car! Jack then went out and qualified the car #2 with a 9.03/152.28 behind Gapp's 8.99/152 in the Pinto. Both survived the first-round with Jack's 8.94/153.06 beating Paul Blevins' 9.01. Gapp hurt his motor in his first-round win over Bob Glidden and was unable to run in round two. Roush had to carry the "Gapp and Roush" banner himself in round two and his 8.97/152.51 won over Scott Shafiroff's 9.08/149. He beat his third straight Vega driver in the semifinals where his 8.95/152.80 put Frank Iaconio's 9.05/152 on the trailer. This put Jack into the final against Wally Booth and his AMC Hornet. Jack made his worst run of eliminations, a 9.01/152.54 that finished runner-up to Booth's 8.97/152.

Notes: Bill Taylor, Pat Collins, and Stanley Wolf teamed up on this "Super Duster" for '70. Don Hardy built the 120" chassis. The engine was a .020 overbored 426 Hemi that measured 430 cubic inches. It used a lot of stock parts. The stock crankshaft was clearanced and balanced by Racing Head Service, who had also done the overbore. The rods were also stock steel Chrysler units. Venolia pistons were used, and Joe Lunati supplied the roller cam. Also, stock Chrysler pieces were the rocker arms and valves. Up top sat a Larry Bowers-built GMC 6/71 on a Cragar manifold, and Cragar was used for blower drive. Enderle injection was used. A Coleman and Taylor-built TorqueFlite transferred the power back to a Dana rear end with 4.10 gears. The body came from Fiberglass Trends, and it was painted candy blue and pearl white by Eddie Wilford. Robert Davis was responsible for the lettering. Bobby Rowe had never driven a supercharged car until he debuted this one at the AHRA Winternationals at Phoenix. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. He also failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was gaining experience as there he received guidance from Larry Reyes and Roland Leong. He towed to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where in Friday's qualifying session, he ran a 7.55 to make the field. But by early Saturday, they had been bumped out. Kelly Chadwick was on the "bump" with a 7.47. Rowe gave it another spot and came up short. Pat Collins decided that his driver was ready, and he upped the nitro % from 76 to 1986%. The result was a broken transmission on the shift to second. Once again, the team returned to the pits, where the team installed a new transmission. Time was running out, and this was their last attempt. Bobby ran 7.189/203.61 to qualify #2. He beat Bobby Woods with a holeshot in the first round, 7.417/200.89 to 7.37/199. In round two, his 7.399/200.89 lost to eventual winner Leonard Hughes' 7.34/201. Early in April, he ran a best of three match race against Pat Minick at Miami-Hollywood. Rowe had a bad outing when he got crossed up and ran a losing 8.05/177.86 in the first race. In the second race, he fouled away a 7.60/193.96. In the third race, he blew his engine while running a 7.88/156.52 but still won when Minick broke a blower drive. He raced at the Super Stock Nationals on May 10. Bobby beat Bob Banning in the first round with a 7.37, but a 7.19/200 by Leonard Hughes beat him in the second round. On June 7, he raced at the Spring Funny Car meet at Epping. He had an easy first round and then faced Terry Hedrick in round two. Bobby's 7.39/195 beat Terry's 7.56/193. Terry was reinstated with the break rule in effect, and the two faced one another again in the semifinal. This time Terry's 7.46/195 beat Rowe's quicker 7.38/195. Hedrick was to have faced Bruce Larson in the final, but Larson's transmission went south after his burnout. So, on the break rule, the quickest loser from the previous round got reinstated; Bobby and Terry raced for the third time in a row, this time for the win. Terry's 7.49/199 took the win over Bobby's off pace 7.77/186. The following week, he was in Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A 7.310/199.11 qualified #6. In the first round, he beat Dave Beebe, 7.367/181.81 to 7.53/168. Eventual winner Leroy Goldstein's 7.24/204 beat his 7.740/134.52 in the second round. Bobby did win the AHRA 1/8 mile Championships on June 21, running 4.78 to beat Arnie Beswick, who broke in the final. He ran Gene Snow at a best-of-three-match race at Southland on June 28. Gene won the first race with a 7.29 track record over Bobby's 7.83/170.77. Bobby came back to even the score by winning the second race with a 7.49/196.07 to Snow's 7.56/200. Gene won the last race and the match with a 7.34/201 when Rowe fouled with a 7.73/170.45. Rowe got himself into some hot water at Epping when he failed to show for a match race against Mike Burkhart. When Rowe didn't show, the track management was surprised to see the "Atlas Oil Tool" Maverick show unannounced and demanding $900.00 for three runs. Both the "Super Duster" and the "Atlas" teams were told they were not welcome back at the track. Rowe then ran against Bruce Larson in July at National Trail. Larson won the first race with a holeshot 7.67/187 beating Rowe's 7.55/202.24. In the second race, a 7.47/192.30 evened the score over a 7.54/195 by Larson. In the third and final race, Larson again pulled a holeshot and won the match with a 7.54/195 to beat Bobby's 7.53/195.22. On July 19, Detroit held a 10-car race when all ten cars ran three races each. Bobby won his first race with an 8.55/183, beating an out-of-shape Mike Burkhart. In his second race, a 7.51/192 beat the Stone, Woods, and Cooke Mustang. In his last race, a 7.96/188 beat Tony Wahlay's hurting 9.45/146. Bobby was the only car to have won all three of his races. At the NHRA US Nationals, he ran really well. He qualified #15 at 7.236/205.91. A first-round 7.220/206.42 beat Tom Hoover's quicker 7.209/204. A 7.207/204.54 advanced when Ken Safford broke in the Mr. Norm car in the second round. In the semifinal, a 7.180/205.01 lost to Don Schumacher's 7.01/212. By the end of September, Larry Reyes was driving this car and Rowe had switched over to the Super Cuda. - RH

Notes: After starting the year driving the Super Duster, Bobby took the seat in the Hawaiian, replacing Butch Maas. At the 1971 OCIR Manufacturers Meet, Bobby lead the Dodge team (6.78) in qualifying and eventually set Top Speed of the meet with 6.75/224.43 run. He won 2 of the 3 rounds contested, losing only to Jim Dunn's Low ET of the meet 6.70 while running a very respectable 6.76.

ND cites that round one time beat Al Vanderwoude but was not quick enough to advance to round two. | Bobby Rowe was at Miami in February for a best-of-three-match race again Tom Sneden driving the Bob Banning Challenger. In the first race of the match, Rowe's 7.11/205.01 beat Sneden's 7.21/206. Sneden set a track record in winning the second race when Rowe got out of shape and shut off. Bobby won the match in the third race with his 7.04/207.37, beating Sneden, who shut down. He was at LaPlace in Mid-March for a four-car show. He beat Pat Minick's 7.30/204 in the "Chi-Town Hustler" with a 7.25/203.61. In his second race, Rowe's 7.27/205.47 lost to Leroy Goldstein's 7.07/189 in the "Ramchargers" car. Bobby ran a solo 7.50 in his final race as Chris Karamesines' new Mustang broke. He then went to Tulsa, where he and Dick Rosberg, driving the "Fighting Irish" Camaro, took turns resetting the track record. Rowe started by setting it at 7.63, and then Rosberg lowered it to 7.59. Bobby came back to claim it again with a 7.56, but Rosberg took it back with a 7.49. At the NHRA Gatornationals, these two would qualify #4 and #5, with Rosberg getting the lower spot. Both ran 6.99. In the first round, Bobby's opponent, Casey Powell, crashed, and Rowe advanced. He also got an easy solo in round two after Larry Arnold blew his engine while winning his first-round race and was unable to appear. In the semifinals, Rowe's luck turned; he beat Mart Higginbotham with a 7.02, but his transmission let go, and he had a fire in the lights. He was unable to run Goldstein in the final. In April, the "Super Duster" was at National Trail for a best of three match race against Bruce Larson's USA #1 Camaro. In their first race, Rowe's 7.39/198.66 beat Larson's 7.57/191. Larson came back to tie it up at one apiece with his 7.36/202 beating Bobby's 7.51/191.88. Rowe notched the win in their final race by running a track record 7.17 at 200.44 to beat Larson at 7.50/184. Bobby qualified #8 at NHRA Springnationals at Dallas at 6.959/211.76. He beat a shutting-off Leroy Goldstein in round one, with a 7.19/205. The Super Duster could not start in round two, sending Kelly Brown forward. Bobby was driving the Hawaiian at Indy.
