Notes: Kevin ran at the AHRA Winternationals, but in the second round, Larry Lombardo ran a 9.05 that beat his 9.20. Larry lost a motor on the run and Kevin was reinstated. He didn't hang around long as in the semifinal Bob Glidden dropped a 9.02/150 on his 9.16/150.00 to finish his day for good. In May he ran at the Fremont Northern Nationals and made it all the way into the final before losing to Dick Landy's 8.90/154. Another runner-up finish came in June at the first NHRA Division 7 race at Sacramento. He ran 9.14/150.76 in the final that lost to Brad Yuill's 9.10/148. |

Notes: Kevin started the year at Irwindale's Grand Premiere race. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with an 8.93/151, and in round one, his 9.08/148 beat Jack Manchester. He lost to Mark Yuill in the semifinal. After that, he was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Rotty was unlucky there as he qualified #9, which set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Lee Edwards. Rotty lost to Lee's 8.96. His next race was the Phoenix Winter Classic held at Beeline. There, he qualified #10, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 9.60/144.92 lost to Bob Glidden's 8.97/153. Kevin just made the field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 9.06 qualified on the "bump." He fouled against Don Nicholson in the first round. The next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet. Rotty did well there. His opening round 9.21 stopped Jean Batteux's 9.45. In round two, his 9.10/148.02 beat Brad Yuill's 9.51, but the car broke before his semifinal race with Tom Chelbana. Ran 9.02/149.00 at NHRA D7 Fremont CA 3/76. |

Notes: This was one of the last pro stock cars that began life as a genuine factory-built car. Kevin Rotty started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 behind Sonny Bryant. Rotty easily won his first race over Don Campanello, but he had a tough semifinal race against Larry Lombardo driving Bill Jenkins' Monza. Rotty won the race with an 8.99/150.50 edging Larry's 9.01/146. He then faced low qualifier Bryant in the final. Kevin improved to 8.91/151.51 to get the victory over Sonny's 9.00/152. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #5 with an 8.74/156. In the opening round, opponent Jean Batteux fouled and he advanced with a 9.27/129. But in round two, his troubled 9.54/123 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.67/153. A week later, he was at the NHRA Phoenix Winter Championships. He qualified #2 behind Warren Johnson and the two would both make their way to the final where Rotty's 8.90 finished runner-up to Johnson's 8.74. He really ran well in qualifying at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There his 8.607/159.29 qualified #3, but his brakes failed in the first round, and he rolled through the lights and fouled. In April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field and his 8.76 (third alternate) failed to qualify. He still had Top Speed for the Pro Stock cars. He then won the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR by beating Bryant in the final. A strong 8.68/157.06 qualified #2 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but an opening round 8.83/155.70 fell to Joe Satmary's quick-leaving 8.84/154. The following week (June 18), he was at Sacramento for the third NHRA Division 7 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.59/157.07. Randy Humphrey fouled against him in the first round, and Kevin advanced with an 8.70/153.85. In the semifinal, his 8.69/154.11 lost to Mark Yuill's 8.67/155. Early in July, he went to Bonneville Raceway for the fourth NHRA Division 7 race. In the opening round, his 9.07/148.77 beat Gordie Rivera. In the semifinal, Kevin's 9.11/148.52 defeated Lee Hunter's 9.17/146. He faced Sonny Bryant in the final and Bryant had been running about a half tenth quicker throughout the race. Rotty gambled on the tree and fouled away a 9.07/149.01 while Sonny ran 9.01/146 for the victory. Kevin ran 8.59/157.07 at NHRA Division 7 Sacramento, but lost to Mark Yuill on a holeshot in the final, 8.69 to Kevin's 8.67. The Gainesville numbers were Kevin's best national event times of the year. |

Notes: Runner-up at the 1980 Winternationals, setting a new record. Photo from 1980 US Nationals. Kevin finished 4th in NHRA points in 1980, his best finish. Unfortunately, Kevin did not race in 1981 and was unable to display the big number 4 on his car. | Kevin had his best year in Pro Stock in '80. He started the year at the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3 and lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to eventual winner Lee Shepherd. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed 8.492/161.57 (new NHRA speed record). Kevin beat a fouling Bill Jenkins in the first round, with an 8.62/157.34, and in the second round, Randy Humphrey also fouled against him. Rotty must have had everyone scared because, in the semifinals, Frank Iaconio was the third straight driver to foul against him. He met up with Lee Shepherd in the final, and unfortunately for Kevin, his Camaro broke a frame mount, giving Shepherd a solo for the victory. He was going to race at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, but it was rain-delayed, and he was unable to make the rain date. He continued to impress by qualifying #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals at 8.490/161.00. He beat Don Nicholson in the first round before losing to Bob Glidden in round two. At the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Baton Rouge, Kevin made it all the way to the final before losing to Shepherd's 8.60/155 with an 8.63/154.73. He won the Divisional race at Beeline, stopping a fouling Gordie Rivera in the final with an 8.87. Another runner-up finish to Shepherd came at the second NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley. An 8.58/157.61 was no match for Lee's 8.42/156 on this day. In April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. Rotty qualified #5 in the eight-car field with an 8.58/157. He lost to low qualifier Brad Yuill in the first round. He was back at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals on April 27. An 8.49/161.00 qualified third in the eight-car show. A first-round 8.54/158.17 beat Sonny Ray, but he came up against Shepherd in the semifinals, and his 8.57/159.57 lost to Lee's 8.54/158. It didn't seem to matter which Division he raced in; he was tough. In May, Kevin was at OCIR for the third NHRA Division 6 race. It was another eight-car field, and his 8.50/158.17 qualified #1. He went on to win by beating Larry Johnson in the first round, with an 8.55/157.06 and an 8.53/157.61, and then beat Ken Dondero in Dick Landy's Omni in the semifinals. Rotty took all the awards in the final when he beat Brad Yuill with Low ET and Top Speed at 8.48/158.73. He slipped a bit in qualifying for the NHRA Springnationals when his 8.73/155.44 got the #8 spot in the field. In the first two rounds, he got around Don Coonce and Jim Kinnett before losing to Shepherd's 8.58 in the semifinals with an 8.70. Did Kevin run 8.43 somewhere this year? His NHRA national event bests were the 8.490 at Gainesville and 161.57 at the Winternationals. |
