Notes: his first-year Camaro funny was the followup effort to the dealer's super-recognizable fastback Chevy II match racers. This quite beautiful all-glass flip-top (green with white bumblebee strip around the snout) had strong stocker identification with a complete complement of showroom trim: chrome driprail moldings, Super Stock badges and Super Stock hood "scoops" and a stock see-through Rally Sport grill with Super Stock emblem. Car ran a blown 427, Turbo-Hydro combo in a 114" Race Car Specialties chassis. Shared a multi-page feature with Dick Harrell's Camaro in the 11/67 Car Craft. Note: This "King Camaro" appears wholly unrelated to the funny of the same name that operated out of Phoenix, Ariz. circa 1970-74. - RT

Notes: Ran 230.76 at Winters but was not backed up for the record. Ruth qualified #19 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.18/220.58. He lost to the eventual winner James Warren, in the opening round of eliminations. His 7.16/220.58 fell to Warren's 6.87/230. His next stop was at Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. He qualified #13 but once again lost to Warren in the first round, of racing. Things didn't go too well at the big 64-car PDA Championships held at OCIR in March. He lost early there as well. At Mission B.C., Ruth set a 6.93 track record. On July 20, for the PDA Championships at Lions, Ruth qualified with a 6.91/227.84. He ran a best of 6.88/230.76 in the semifinal before beating John Mulligan with a 6.93/227.26 in the final. He was at Keystone Dragways in Canada for the Canadian Nationals in August. He set a track speed record of 219.40 and made it into the final, where he lost to John Wiebe.| photo shows Ruth in the far lane at Lions, vs Kenny Safford in the Gotelli AAFD. JM

Notes: Confirmed 6.68 National Record at Bremerton, Wash., on 5/3/69, but there were rumors that a 6.485 came up on the boards somewhere in 1969. Also number three qualifier at Bakersfield 69 at 6.79. | Ruth ran at the AHRA Winternationals, but lost to Cliff Zink in the first round. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #15 in the 32-car field. A first-round 7.10 beat a quicker 7.04 by Dave Powers. In the second round, Ruth was on it again as his 7.07 beat Don Cook's quicker 7.00. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in round three and lost to Leroy Goldstein's 7.40. At Las Vegas for the Stardust Open on February 16, he lost to Jim Nicoll in the first round. As mentioned above, he qualified #3 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A first-round 7.66/164 advanced over a broken Leland Kolb. In round two, a 7.25/217.39 dropped the race against Larry Dixon's 7.05/222. At Riverside for the HRM Championships, a 7.07 qualified #16 in the 32-car field. A first-round 7.04/218 beat Rick Stewart (7.41/196), but a sleepy 7.02/219.51 lost to John Mulligan's 7.14/216. Ruth won on March 30 in Sacramento. He qualified #4 with a 7.33 and then ran 7.19 and 7.11 (Low ET) before beating Jim Herbert in the final with a 7.29. He fouled away Low ET of the meet at Seattle on April 13 when in the first round, against Dwight Salisbury he fouled away a 7.13 to Dwight's motor expiring 7.53. On May 18, he faced Don Garlits at a best of three match race in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Going into the match, Ruth held the track records at 7.11/219.50. In the first race, Garlits' 7.21/210 beat Ruth's 7.26/202.70, but Jerry came back to win the match with runs of 7.07/208.32 over Don's 7.30/205 and another new track record 7.06/203.60 over Don who broke a crankshaft. On June 1, Ruth reset the NHRA Top Fuel record to 6.68 at the Division 6 race at Bremerton. He qualified #1 with a 6.68/226.70 (Top Speed) and went into the final of the eight-car show only to lose on a holeshot by Dick Kalivoda. Dick's 7.06/206 beat Ruth's 6.98 for the title. He made up for the loss the following week at the Travelon's Fuel Championships at Seattle. Ruth ran 6.94/216 and 6.99/214 to get to the final against Herm Petersen. There he ran a final Low ET shot of 6.87/221.12 over Herm's 6.96/222 for the win. At the third Division 6 race at Mission City, a 6.86 beat Larry Hendrickson in the first round, but in the semifinals he got out of shape and lost to Gaines Markley. Ruth ran well at the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19. He qualified #11 in the 32-car field with a 6.94. In the second round, he ran a 6.94 to beat Jim Davis' 6.91, and in the third round (32-car field) a 6.98 beat Pete Robinson's 7.04. Jerry finished ahead of Steve Carbone in their semifinal match, but unfortunately for Ruth, he had crossed the center line and was disqualified. At the fourth race of Division 6, he made it into the final only to lose to Petersen's 7.14/210 with an off pace 7.83/203.16. He did win the Division 6 final at Seattle on August 24 running 6.88/226.13 (Top Speed) over Petersen in the first round, and 6.81/225.00 over Kalivoda in the semifinal. In the final, he stepped it up to a Low ET of 6.78/220.04 to win over Hank Johnson's 7.27/217. | “This is 1969, Orange County [Int’l Raceway] at the U.S. Pro Dragster Championship race. When you see a car wheelstand like this, it means you’re trying to run it too light. Looks like it could have used another 15 pounds on the nose; 15 pounds wouldn’t have hurt the e.t.“. Notes: Ruth was one of 75 drivers attempting to qualify at Bakersfield's 32-car show in March. His 6.84 qualified #6. In the opening round, he ran 7.08/221.66 to beat Don Enriquez's 7.20/216. Unfortunately, the car broke against James Warren in round two. A week later (March 15), he was at Sears Point for the San Francisco National Open. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #7 with a 6.99. He improved to 6.84 in round one to beat an out-of-shape Dennis Baca, and in round two, John Weibe fouled against him. In the semi-final, Ruth's 7.01 beat Bill Dunlap's 7.08. In the final, he faced Tom Larkin, and Ruth's 7.01/215.82 proved too much for Larkin's 7.11/183 runner-up effort. He then went to Seattle for its National Open, where he lost in the first round. Early in May, he was at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division 6 race. While he failed to reach the final, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.07/211.68. On May 24, he was at Bremerton for the next NHRA Division 6 race. His 6.57/223.32 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. A 6.56 (Low ET) at 219.50 in the first round beat Glen Foster's 7.13/202. His opponent, Herm Petersen, did a huge wheelstand and shut down in the semi-final. Ruth advanced easily. But Ruth fouled against Walt Johnson in the final. Seattle held a four-car show on June 27, which turned out not to be a good day for Ruth. In his first race, his 7.05/218.96 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.82/222. In his second race, his 6.92/200.58 lost to Marvin Schwartz's 7.04/219. In the final race, his car broke against Tommy Ivo. He won the third NHRA Division 6 race held at Mission Raceway in mid-July. He qualified #1 at 6.74 and then set Low ET in round one with his 6.70/214.28 that beat Dick Kalivoda. He then beat Petersen in the semi-final. He faced Foster in the final, and both ended up blowing their engines, but Ruth's 6.82/197.36 got the win. Near the end of the month (25), he raced at OCIR for its 32-car PDA Pro Dragster Championships. Unfortunately, his 6.97/211.76 in the first round fell to Prudhomme's 6.82/193. Shortly after that, he went to Spokane for the fourth NHRA Division 6 race where, wonder of wonders, he failed to qualify. Best NHRA national event times of 6.560/225.56. Herry ran 6.89/210.28 NHRA D6 Edmonton AB 6.89 210.28 (Winner).

Notes: Jerry drove the Daily & Johnson car at the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo, in addition to his own funny car. He qualified #13 at 6.98 and then beat Charlie Moulder in round one, 6.77/222.22 to 6.98/202. Jerry fouled against Don Garlits in round two and wasted a potentially winning run as Garlits' 6.96/196 defeated his 6.90/216.34.

Notes: Ruth started the year at Fremont on January 2 for the New Year's race. A 6.87 qualified #4. In the first round, a 6.90 beat Joe Winter's wheelstanding Mustang. In the semifinal, he ran a 6.91 only to lose to Twig Zeigler's 6.94. He ran at the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline, but lost to Richard Tharp's 6.57 Low ET blast in the second round. On February 13, he ran at OCIR for the third All-Pro event. A 6.69 qualified #1 and an even better 6.67 beat Gary Burgin's 7.06 in the first round. In the semifinal, Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega stepped up to a 6.76 to beat Jerry's 6.86. He won the Las Vegas National Open in March, running Low ET in the final with a 6.97/205.94 beating Burgin's 7.11/207. He lost early at the Bakersfield March Meet when he fouled against Jim Dunn in the first round. In April, he won a race at Firebird Raceway and the Seattle season opener over Kenny Martin. Near the end of the month Ruth faced off against Leroy Chadderton driving the "Hawaiian" for a best of three match race at Deer Park. Jerry won all three of their races. Early in May, he competed at the OCIR Big Four Championships. He got a solo in the first round, and in round two his 6.85/211.26 beat Eddie Pauling's quicker 6.82/205 in the "Whinemaker", but he broke a rear axle and was unable to run in the third round (32-car field). Ruth was driving both his dragster and his Funny Car at Seattle's Northwest National Open and there he won TF, but his Funny Car didn't quite make it to the final. Ruth had beaten Kenny Achs in the opening round with a 6.85/215.30, but in the semifinals, both he and Kenny Goodell ran 6.77 (Ruth at 215.30 again), but Kenny got the win light. He drove the dragster more often than the FC, but at the NHRA Division 6 race at Mission B.C., he won Top Fuel with Low ET and Top Speed. The Mustang Funny Car also set Low ET and Top Speed, but lost in the semifinals. Only five FC's showed up at Portland's NHRA Division 6 race, and Ruth won rather easily. He soloed in the first round, with a 7.04 and then beat Twig Zeigler in the semifinal which turned out to be his only race as in the final Ray Hadford driving the "Green Elephant" popped a blower and Ruth got the victory.

Notes: Number 3. at Indy 1972 at 6.197/221.67, then ran quickest ever at the time 6.065/232.55 and 6.071/229.59 in eliminations, finishing runner-up to Gary Beck. No records could be set at this race, however. Also, 6.13 at Seattle and 6.16 at Lions Last Drag Race 12/72. | What can be said of Jerry Ruth? Ruth won the Division 6 title seven out of the last eight years. He dominated the NHRA Division 6 fuel classes in '71. The self-proclaimed "King" won Funny Car at all five Division 6 races and only failed to win one Top Fuel race to have had done likewise to TF! So to back it up for '72, he had Don Long build him a new 217" rear-engined car. Jerry built all his own engines, using a Pamco stroker crank, Air Research blower, Crower cam, as well as an unusual Crower eight-port injector. Ruth dominated the third race of NHRA's Division 6. The race was run at Mission B.C. on June 18. He only qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.70. That set up a first-round race with low qualifier Herm Petersen. In that race, Ruth stepped it up to a 6.25/232.55 to beat Herm's 6.35/229. In the semifinals, he beat Gary Beck with a 6.20 (Low ET) at 231.95. In the final, he took the victory by beating Hank Johnson's 6.69 with a 6.22/235.60 (Top Speed).

Notes: Jerry won Funny Car at Seattle International Raceway's "Olympia All-Pro Drag Championships," beating Kenney Goodell in the final. During a first-round single, Jerry ran 6.53/225.00. Jerry was in Seattle on April 29 for its Northwest Open race. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.52/222.22 behind Ed McCulloch's 6.48/211. Unfortunately, he hurt the engine on the run and was unable to run in eliminations. Gary Cromwell's Chevy-powered car took his place in the field. On May 20, he was at Bremerton for the NHRA Division 6 opener. He set Low ET in the first round, with his 6.53/216.34. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal and still ran 6.75/216.86. He faced Frank Hall in the final, who was driving Mike Cyr's Mustang. Hall smoked the tires while Ruth ran 6.65/221.66 for the victory. He also had set Top Speed at 222.22 during qualifying and walked off with Top Fuel honors as well. Quite a day for Ruth! In June, he was at Firebird Raceway for the Olympia ChampionshipsHe set track records of 6.72/223.24 before beating a wheelstanding Twig Zeigler in the final with a 7.02/210.69. He won both Top Fuel and Funny Car at the NHRA Division 6 race at Edmonton on July 2. Only seven FC's had shown for the eight-car field, and as Ruth qualified #1, he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one, and ran 6.55. He set both Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinal with a 6.54/226.70 that beat Bill Spevacek. The final was strange as he had no competition.rnCromwell had broken in the other semifinal race, so Ray Hadford made a single in the "Green Elephant." Ray got out of shape and crossed the centerline, disqualifying himself. So Ruth got to make an easy solo for the win. Another victory came at the Olympia All-Pro Championships at Seattle on July 14. He set Low ET in the opening round with a 6.53/225.00 that advanced when Don Rae broke on the line. Spevacek fouled against him in the semifinal, and Jerry saw the red light, so he coasted to 9.91/84.82 for the win. In the final, he went up against the "Action Man," Kenny Goodell. They had a great race that had Ruth's 6.54/223.38 come out on top over Goodell's 6.58/217. The Mustang's career came to an end at Portland Raceway on July 29. Jerry was there for the fourth NHRA Division 6 race. He had set Low ET and Top Speed during qualifying at 6.57/222.77. In the first round, Jerry's 6.69/222.22 had beaten Lyle Canham. But Lyle's 'Cuda caught fire and veered into Ruth's lane, hitting the Mustang. Both cars crashed hard, and both drivers were taken to the hospital. They were later released with minor injuries. This left Ruth in a tight predicament as he was leading the NHRA Division 6 Funny Car points chase. Now he had no car to run.

Notes: Ruth started his '73 season at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car field, and his 6.19/222.22 qualified #4. He looked like the car to beat in round one, when he ran Low ET of the first-round with a 6.16/229.00 that beat Steve Carbone's 6.88/156 in Larry Huff's car. He also had Low ET in round two by over a tenth when he ripped off a 6.10/230.17 to beat Chris Karamesines' 6.38/225. Jerry kept up the pressure on the other teams with a 6.13/227.15 in round three to defeat Gary Egbert's 6.34/216. Don Prudhomme smoked the tires in the semifinal, and Ruth advanced with a 6.12/224.43. His final-round opponent was Don Garlits. He qualified #1 at 6.09 and had run as good as 6.19 during eliminations. Ruth definitely had the advantage. But Ruth was late in the final, and although he reset the AHRA ET record to 6.06 (speed on the run was 223.32), Garlits had gotten out on mine, and his 6.16/239 took the victory. That had to hurt. He then made the trip to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran 7.16/207.85 on the first weekend (February 3) of qualifying on the horrible track surface. That gave him the #17 spot in the field. But rain kept interrupting the race, and it wasn't run until February 18. His time had been bumped back to the #22 spot by then. He lost to Gaines Markley in the opening round of eliminations. His next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet. It was yet another 32-car field and his 6.40 qualified #2 behind Steve Carbone's similar 6.40 clocking. Denver Schutz blew his engine in round one, and Ruth advanced at 7.10/223.68. In round two, he defeated Flip Schofield with a 6.66/227.84. In the third round, he got out of shape against Randy Allison and shut off. Allison won with a 6.72. The AHRA Northern Nationals was held at Fremont, and Ruth qualified on the pole for the sixteen-car show with a 6.31/233.16. He easily made it past the first two rounds before running into Garlits in the semifinal. The two had a great race that saw the "Old Man's" 6.27/232 beat Jerry's 6.32/231.95. To add insult to injury, Garlits went on to win by beating James Warren in the final. The following week (March 18), Ruth was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified in the unlucky #9 spot with a 6.22/236.88, forcing him to run low qualifier Carl Olson in the first round. Ruth ran well in their race, but his 6.24/229.59 fell to Olson's 6.09. In April, he was in Seattle for the Northwest Open. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.43/224 qualified #7. He improved on his qualifying time in round one, where his 6.26/227.84 beat Wayne King's 6.83/202. King got back in on the "break rule" and lined up against Ruth once more in the second round. Once again, Jerry laid down a number; this time, his 6.16/238.09 eliminated Wayne's 6.45/228 for good. But he slowed to a 6.46/229.59 in the semifinal that lost to eventual winner Don Moody's 6.51/222. He was back in Seattle in May for an eight-car show. He opened eliminations with a 6.16/233.76 to beat Ron Smith, and he got an easy solo in round two when Larry Kleinbrook broke. He faced Hank Johnson in the final. Ruth ran a 6.55/220 in the final, but he lost to Johnson, who was losing a blower in the lights at 6.48/205. On May 20, he scored a victory at the NHRA Division 6 opener at Bremerton Raceway. An opening round 6.23/225.56 beat a tire-smoking Markley. Another strong 6.27/227.84 defeated Johnson's 6.52/208 in the semifinal. He faced low qualifier Herm Petersen in the final, and Herm "banged" his blower on the line, so Ruth got the victory with a 6.53/204.54. Not only did he win TF, but he also won the Funny Car eliminator at this race. World Champ 1973. Photo from the 1973 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park, where they ran 6.132/238.09. Also ran 6.12 at the 1973 Ontario Supernationals.

Notes: Confirmed 6.38/225 at Seattle 7/75. | Ruth started the '75 season at the Fremont New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. He beat Jim Liberman in the first round, with a 6.48/208.81 and a 6.41 beat Sush Matsubara in round two. In the finals, he ran Don Prudhomme. Jerry had troubles and shut off to a 16.33 loss to Prudhomme's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.39/215.31. Ruth had some problems at the NHRA Winternationals. His tow rig's air conditioner failed and Ruth attempted to fix it. His hand got stuck in the belt and he required 12 stitches. Jerry had to rehire former driver Frank Hall to drive his Mustang at Pomona. Unfortunately, Frank's best of 6.50 failed to make the show. In April, Ruth was at Seattle for its opening race of the season. It was an eight-car show with all cars making two runs and the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Ruth’s 6.88/214.99 in his first race lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.56/220, but a 6.62/221.13 beat Rich Rogers' 7.55 in his second race. The third race had Twig Zeigler pull a holeshot and hang on with a 6.88/206 beating Jerry's quicker 6.79/221.67. His ETs were not quick enough to advance him into the final. Shortly after that, he was at Portland for its Grand Premiere race. It was run in the same format as Seattle. An opening round 6.47/221.67 beat Johnny White in the "Oly Smoker" and in his second race he ran a strong 6.46/228.21 (Top Speed), but it wasn't enough to beat Ed McCulloch who set a track record 6.22 in beating him. In his third race, he smoked the tires and lost to Bonin. He then went to Firebird Raceway for the fifth annual Ignitor Funny Car Championships. Ruth set Top Speed at 222.14 on his way to reaching a final round showdown with McCulloch. In the final, both ran 6.82 (Ruth at 219.96), but the "Ace" got the victory.

Notes: Ruth started his '77 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals on January 23. He qualified #6 with a 6.55 and in round one, beat Lyle Fisher's 6.59 with a 6.50. In round two, he stepped it up to a 6.31, but lost to Jeb Allen's 6.25. Jerry got back into the race when Clive Skilton broke while winning his second round race and was unable to return for the semifinal. Ruth had been the Low ET loser from the second round and got in on the "break rule." Unfortunately for him, he ran Allen again and once again lost with his 6.38 being second best to Allen's 6.34. A week later (January 30), he took a big win at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran 6.04 to qualify #11. A first-round 5.98 beat Hank Johnson and in round two, a consistent 6.00/234.37 beat James Warren. In the semifinals, he outRance McDaniel's 6.34 with a 6.02. In the final, he met the "old man," Don Garlits. Don ran a sub-par 6.38/238 in the final that gave Ruth's 5.99/230.76 the victory. On March 6, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He didn't run very well there; he qualified #23 and went out early. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he again went out early, as his first-round 6.28/230 lost to Paul Longenecker's 6.15/240. He won the NHRA Division 6 race at Mission Raceway. At the Division's next stop, Seattle, he qualified #5 and lost to Hank Johnson's 6.12 in the first round, with a 6.46/222.22. Ruth had a bit of bad luck at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #16 with a 6.16/200.89, but blew a rear end. He was unable to run in eliminations and first alternate Johnny Abbott took his place in the field. At the second PDA race held at Fremont on June 23, Ruth qualified #2 with a 5.92. He failed to make the finals. At the fourth NHRA Division 6 race held at Woodburn, Ruth made it into the final only to be stopped by Johnson who ran Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.95/240 to top Jerry's 6.61/202.04 runner-up effort. He raced at the NHRA Summernationals, but drove Don Garlits' car there.

Notes: Booming 255.68 mph run at Summers, but records could not be set at this race. Garlits was in England, so Jerry drove his car at Englishtown. Ruth lost fire in eliminations. He did become the third driver in the NHRA 250 mph Club for Top Fuel on the run.

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1978. Lost to Muldowney in round one, at Indy 1978 with a 6.26/227. Ruth started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #9, which set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Don Garlits. Don had the edge on this day as his 6.23/221 easily beat Jerry's 6.46/216. He competed at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 5.90/241.28 qualified #3 for the 32-car field. In the first round of eliminations, he ran 6.15/223.32 to beat Denny Fitts' close 6.16/225. But in the second round, his 6.05/229.00 lost to Denver Schulz's 6.06/227. In May, he was in Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 opener. His 6.07/238.72 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, but he broke a rod against Jerry Olson in the opening round of eliminations.

Notes: Jerry started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified for the show but failed to make the finals. He then failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. In late April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.12/236.84. In the first round, he lost to eventual winner Kelly Brown, 6.07/228 to 6.27/230.17. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He ran 5.98 to qualify #2, but he lost a blower and the race to Clayton Harris in the first round. Ruth made it into the semifinals at the AHRA World Finals held in August before losing to Don Garlits. He wasn't too happy at indy, where his best of 6.06/233.76 was good for the fourth alternate for the NHRA US Nationals field.

Notes: Duplicated his 240.64 best speed at the NHRA World Finals. | Jerry "The King" Ruth lived up nationwide to his nickname into the 80s, when he designed the "Swindhahl F-86," followed by Terry Capp/Bernie. In an online interview, Ruth explains the still-influential chassis designed for launching faster from static to dynamic weight. R/U to Bruins/Markley at the car's 5/80 WWCS SIR debut. Ruth and Lee Beard also won the Mile-Highs that year. Went to the 2nd round of the Fallnationals when the blower exploded against Allen. YouTube. I was at the '80 Falls, seeing Ruth go rounds, and AA/Dale's Billy-Meyer-Motor-assisted Final against the Blue Max. Belching sheets of fire, sounded very different. I got a picture card that day, and close up on the body, smaller lettering said, "The Amazing" Speed Racer. - Joe Moore

Notes: Ruth started the season at the AHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.28/234 but lost to Don Garlits in the final. He qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, hitting 5.80 for the top spot and a first-round 5.85/243 that beat Gene Snow. In the second round, a 5.95/240 lost to Richard Tharp's 5.83/243. On March 8, he went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 5.96/234.98 qualified #5. He beat Gary Beck in the first round, with a 6.00/225.56, and when Dennis Baca lost fire in round two, he singled with a 5.92/221.67 into the semifinal. Unfortunately, paired against Shirley Muldowney, he smoked the tires to an 8.35 and lost to her 5.84 Low ET blast. In July, he ran a best of 6.16/230.17 at the NHRA Mile High Nationals, which was good for the #3 alternate. On August 16, he was at Bonneville Raceway for the AHRA Western Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.91 and in the first round, a 6.03/228 beat Junior Kaiser. In the semifinal, the "King" met the "King," Ruth beat Garlits with a slower 6.02/228 to Don's 6.00/245. In the final, he met the "Queen" as he faced off against Shirley. It took a new track record 5.90 at 236 to win over her 6.03/231. He faced her in the final again the following week at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. He set a new AHRA ET record of 5.57 in qualifying and ran 5.82/237 over Chris Karamesines and 5.98/219 in the semifinal over a fouling Garlits. In the final, Ruth's 5.74/238 beat Shirley's 5.89. He qualified #4 with a 5.72 at the NHRA US Nationals, but as mentioned above, he lost the quickest side-by-side race ever in the first round, when Connie Kalitta's 5.74 beat his 5.77. Garlits got one back from Ruth at the AHRA Autumn Nationals at Seattle. The two met in the finals, and Don's 5.97 beat Jerry's close 5.89 for the title. In October, Ruth ran at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. There, a 5.85/233.16 qualified #11. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.95/222.77 wasn't good enough to get around Jeb Allen's 5.73/244.56. He qualified much better at the NHRA World Finals, where a 5.74/238.09 notched the #4 spot. A better 5.72/242.58 beat Kalitta (5.83/236) in the first round, but in round two, a sleepy 6.09 lost to Dwight Salisbury's 6.11.
