Notes: In the first half of the '62 season, they ran on gas but switched over to fuel with great success in August. Safford started the '57 season with a top gas eliminator win at the March Meet at Bakersfield with best times of 8.78 and 177.61 mph. At Fremont on May 27, he beat Tom Trefethen to take the #5 Mr. Eliminator title for gas dragsters with 8.73 at 177.16 mph. On June 16 at Lions, he got the gas Top Eliminator victory with 9.04 at 165.44 mph. He repeated that Lions TE win a week later with 9.10 at 168.85 mph. On July 22 at San Fernando, he took a top gas eliminator win with 9.23 at 171.87 mph. After that, they switched over to run fuel. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB

Notes: They switched from gas to fuel in August, taking a top fuel eliminator win at Lions on Aug. 12 with 9.24 at 173.74. At Lions on Oct. 6, they took another TE win. A week later, at Lions, they got the Top Speed of the meet with 186.32 mph. And a week after that, they again got the meet's Top Speed with 185.94 mph. With those fast times, they thought it wouldn't be long before they would get a top fuel eliminator win. That happened on Nov. 10 when they got the TE fuel win with 8.26 at 184 mph. A week after, they got another TE fuel victory with 186.72 mph. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB

Notes: While the Chrysler Hemi dominated fuel-dragster races, a few teams held out against the Hemi brigade. This team proved that the big-Oldsmobile engine could still compete in TF competition. Kenny drove the car to victory at San Gabriel on June 15. He also set Low ET at 7.97. In an earlier run, he ran 8.04/185.94 over Norm Weekly, and his 8.06/190.26 stopped "Masters & Richter" in the final. Safford was at Pomona on November 17, and while he failed to reach the final, the Olds-powered car ran 8.04/189.46.

Notes: World's quickest Olds, Safford-Gaide-Ratican. Set Top Speed at 1964 NHRA Winternationals at 195.22 mph. 1964 NHRA Winternationals entry list shows A/FD. Also ran 8.13/191.88 at Bakersfield 3/64. | This big, bad Oldsmobile gave the Hemis a hard time early in the year. Started the season by winning at Fontana on January 1. He ran a best of 7.99/193.96 on his way to the final where his 8.10/188.28 got the victory over Mike Snively. He was at Pomona on January 12 for an eight-car show. He reached the final by running 8.13/180.00 and 8.10/191.48. He faced Bill Alexander in the final and even though Safford had been running quicker throughout eliminations, he got anxious and fouled away a potentially winning 8.15/181.80 while Alexander ran 8.25/191 for the victory. As mentioned, he showed his Olds top end horsepower by setting Top Speed at the NHRA Winternationals. He had one of only two non-Chryslers to qualify for the race (James Warren's Chevy was the other). He was at Fremont on March 15 for the West Coast Championships, but he lost to Denny Miliani in the first round. On April 18, Safford was at Lions for an eight-car show and in round one, his 8.40/189.46 beat Chuck Griffith, but he lost in the semifinals. The Oldsmobile powered car was having a harder and harder time keeping pace with the Hemis as the year went on, but it was still competitive. Pomona held a twelve car show on April 26 and Ken's first-round 8.07/189.46 beat Goob Tuller, but an 8.25/189.06 lost to eventual winner Frank Cannon's 8.03/199.

Notes: Ken took over driving Ted Gotelli's car in late April, replacing Roy Thode behind the wheel. On April 30, it was Ken driving at Beeline's third annual Fuel and Gas Championships. In the first round, he ran a 7.93/186.32 that lost to Dave Beebe's 7.67/206, but he got back in on the "break rule" when John Mulligan broke after winning his first-round race. It didn't do Ken much good as he lost to Tommy Allen in his semifinal race. He ran much better on May 7 at Lions for an eight-car show. Safford qualified #1 with a 7.51/204.54, and in the first round, he laid down a 7.77/165.74 to advance when Dave Babler lost fire on the line. In the semifinals, he ran a 7.58/205.43 to beat Bob Downey's close 7.59/204. He slept on the line in the final, and his 7.63/201.78 lost to Dave Beebe's 7.70/208. Ken made up for his nap by winning the sixteen-car show at Lions on May 14. He qualified #4 with a 7.66, and in the first round, he picked up the pace to a 7.57 (Low ET) at 197.36 to beat Bob Tapia's 7.99/196. In the second round, he beat Bill Leavitt, and a semifinal 7.67/200.44 over Ron Hampshire got him in the final against John Edmunds. John failed to fire, so Ken soloed to the victory with a 7.83/193.96. He was back at Lions on May 28 for another sixteen-car show. He beat Elgin Freeman in the first round, with a 7.60/188.66, but in round two, a 7.65/210.76 lost to James Warren's 7.59/211. Safford was at Lions for an eight-car show on July 9. He qualified with a 7.76/201.78, but he burnt two pistons to do it and could not run in eliminations.

Notes: Ken Safford took over driving after Denny Miliani was killed at Half Moon Bay. | Ken qualified at the Pomona Winters in 1967 at 7.458/208.80. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.55/205.94 lost to John Edmunds' 7.42/212. The qualifying list confirms it was in this car. That was the team's last NHRA national event of 1967. Ken was at Half Moon Bay on April 16 for a best-of-three-match race against Mike Snively driving the "Hawaiian.” Mike won the first race, but in losing, Safford reset the track speed record to 214.78. He also lost the second race and the match when his quicker 7.27/212.76 lost Snively's 7.42/193. He was at Irwindale on April 29 for an eight-car show. A first-round 7.55/208.80 beat Steve Carbone's 7.75/198 in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car, and in the semifinal, Ken's 7.46/201.76 beat Dave Beebe's 7.64/206. This put him into the final against John Edmunds. The two had a good close race, with Safford winning with a 7.59/209.30 over Edmunds' runner-up 7.60/219. The very next day, these two would meet again in the final at another eight-car show at Fresno with the same results. Safford reset the track record to 7.10. On May 13, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He won his first-round match with a 7.27/205.46, but in the semifinals, his 7.34/211.26 lost to eventual winner Mike Sorokin's 7.14/205.

Notes: Ken qualified in the top half of the 32-car show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran a 7.12/221.66 that qualified #13. An off pace 7.80 in the first round, lost to Hank Westmoreland's 7.10. Ken ran well at the sixth annual Fresno Winter race of Champions, beating Frank Martinez's 7.18 in the first round, with a holeshot 7.20. In the second round, Bobby Hightower fouled against him, and in the semifinals, he slowed to a 7.65, which lost to James Warren's 7.17. He won the West Coast Championships at Fremont on March 17, setting a track record 6.96 along the way to the winner's circle. He was at Irwindale on May 4 for a sixteen-car show. His opening round 7.22/214.28 beat Denny Fitt, but in round two, his 7.40 fell to John Mulligan's 7.23. OCIR held a sixteen-car show on May 25, and Safford and Gotelli were there. It was a short visit as in the opening round of eliminations, Safford's 7.12/220.04 lost to Dave Beebe's quicker-leaving 7.13/217. Kenny was at Irwindale on June 29, but he lost a close race in the first round, when his 7.41/219.90 lost to Ron Hampshire's 7.40/208. At the OCIR Nitro Championships, Safford qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.18/222.26. He beat Wayne King in Tony Waters' car in the first round, with a 7.29/207.30, while a 7.57/204.54 advanced him into the semifinals. There, he lost to Jim Dunn. A 6.99/219.50 qualified #9 at Lions for the PDA Championships. He met low qualifier Jerry Ruth in the first round, and his 7.14/214.78 lost to Ruth's 7.01/227. He got another first-round loss at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships on August 3. His 7.24/220.58 lost to King's Low ET and Top Speed 6.90/223. At the Fremont Fuel Championships, he lasted until round two, where a broken fuel pump stopped him in his run against James Warren. Kenny advanced past the first round when Rich Zoucha broke. He fouled against Gerry Glenn in the first round, at Sacramento for NHRA's fourth Division 7 race. This team was way too good to be losing so early in these races. Things took a turn for the better on August 17 at Fremont. Safford set Low ET at 7.06 and went to the final before losing to Butch Maas, driving for the Berry Brothers. On August 31, the team qualified #1 at OCIR for an eight-car show with a 7.16/218.44. A first-round 7.29/215.82 lost to Warren's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet run of 7.01/227. Fortunately for Safford, Warren hurt a motor while winning and could not continue. Kenny got back into the show with the break rule in effect (the quickest loser from the previous round is reinstated). In the semifinals, he ran 7.66/200 to take out Goss-Smyer. So Safford was now in the final, where he was up against Johnny Martin. Kenny tried hard, but the motor was just not up to snuff as his 7.54/208.80 finished second best to Johnny's 7.27/212.

Notes: The New Dark Horse. Ken drove the Mustang on April 27 at Amarillo for the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. This was his first Cavalcade race. He lost to Norm Weekly's 8.04 in the Mr. Norm Charger in the first round. He then went to Gary, Indiana, for the next Coke race. In the first round, his 7.81/199.81 lost to eventual winner Fred Goeske's 7.53/196. Safford came back out for a consolation race where his 7.64/199 beat Marv Eldridge. The next Coke race was held at Capitol Raceway on June 7. Safford's late 7.93 in the opening round lost to Goeske's 8.08. Fred could not return for the semifinal, so Ken got back into the show on the "break rule." In the semifinal, Kelly Chadwick fouled against him. In the final, his 7.98/185.94 finished runner-up to Gary Dyer's 7.83/190 in the "Mr. Norm" car. At another Cavalcade race on June 15 at Epping, he lost to Eldridge's 8.11/184 in his first race but came back to win his second race over Jack Chrisman 8.90/169.50 to 8.96/139, and won the third race with an even slower time, a 9.59/105 when Dick Bourgeois lost a rear end on the line. At the National Trail Cavalcade race on August 17, Safford ran a first-round 7.99 to beat Jess Tyree's 8.15 Firebird. He lost his second race when the car came up ailing against Dick Bourgeois, who ran a 7.75/189 over Ken's 8.93. In his third race, Tyree's 8.15/184 beat his 8.28. Safford attempted to qualify at the US Nationals, but his 7.55/185.18 best fell just short of the 7.54 bump. - RH | A Coca-Cola circuit ad from 1969 cited 7.52/196.38 bests at the time.

Notes: Ken started the season with a big win on January 26 at an eight-car show at Irwindale. It was his first time out driving the "Mr. Norm" car. He started his March to victory with a first-round 7.58/197.36 (Top Speed) over Clyde Morgan's Javelin. In the semifinals, a 7.62/196.06 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.87/185. And in the final, he set Low ET with a 7.49/196.06 to beat Charlie Allen's 7.54/191. He qualified #15 at Pomona with a 7.74 for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran a best of 7.44 in round two while beating Jake Johnston's quicker 7.40. Gene Snow set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.30 over Ken's 7.47. He was back at Irwindale on February 15 for another eight-car show. Safford qualified #1 with a 7.54/179.64. In the first round, he beat Morgan's 7.86/185 with a 7.56/188.66. A 7.45/197.80 beat the "New Breed in the semifinal." In the final, he faced Danny Ongais in the Mickey Thompson Mustang. Ken won with a 7.35/197.36 over Ongais' 7.60/169. Early in March, he met Curtis Wasson's "Superstitious" Camaro for a best of three match race at St. Louis. Safford won all three races and reset the track record twice. A 4.83 on the 1/8 mile track at 163 was the first record run in the first race. He bettered that with a 4.77/161 in the second race. His third run wasn't too bad either, a 4.81. He had another match race on the 15th against Bruce Larson's new '70 Camaro at York US 30, which he won three straight with a best of 7.44/195.22. Things didn't go as well at the end of the month (March 29) at Gary, Indiana, where he lost his match race to Arnie Behling driving Mickey Thompson's new Boss 429-powered Maverick. These two would meet up again on April 12 at Alton, where Behling won their match once again. The M/T car continued to have its way over the "Mr. Norm" car at their next race in Thompson, Ohio. There Arnie reset the track record and won three straight. Revenge came at Martin, Mich., US 131 on May 16, where Safford defeated Behling two straight. Ken won the first match with a 7.44/193.13 and was awarded the match race victory when Behling had blown a rear end and could not run. Ken opened many eyes when the mostly match race terror qualified #1 at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.04/204.54. Unfortunately, he went out in the first round, with handling problems, and Ray Alley's 7.26 beat his 7.215. Late in June, he was back at US 131 for an eight-car show where he set Low ET with a 7.04/202.70 in the first round, over Allen. In the second round, he ran a 7.11/198.67 over Pat Foster, but in the third race against Tommy Grove, he lost the motor and the race. Safford set a 7.16 track record at Rockford in July. Late in July, Ken beat Larry Reyes in the "Hawaiian" two straight in a match race at York US 30. At the second annual Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, he ran well. He beat Sid Foster in his first race with a 7.40. He fouled away a 7.32 in his second race and lost to Don Schumacher. In his third race, he won with a 7.35 when Grove fouled against him. Eighteen FCs ran the first round at the PHR Championships, with the eight lowest ETs transferring into round two. Ken's ET failed to make the round two cut. Safford was one of four Funny Car's running at Minneapolis late in August. In his first race, he ran 7.17/207.37 to beat Bryan Teal's 7.58/181 in the "Super Chief." A 7.15/203.61 beat John Collins, who shut off in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in his next race. In the third race, he broke a rod and lost to Tom Hoover. - Ron Howard | Mr. Norm defeated USA-1 three straight with a best of 7.44/195.22 at York on 3/05/70 - James Ibusuki

Notes: Confirmed 6.57/226.70 at IHRA Bristol in June 1975. Kenny was at Byron in mid-June for the Manufacturer's Funny Car Championships. In his first race, he lost when he crossed the centerline against Larry Fullerton, but in his second race, he beat Shirl Greer with a 6.73/212.26. The following weekend (June 22), found the "Mr. Norm" car at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Safford qualified #9 in the sixteen-car field, forcing him to run low qualifier Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in round one. The two had a good race, but Beadle's 6.43 got the win light over Kenny's 6.57. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975.
