Notes: Also 7.16/171.1 at Irwindale Grand Prix in Oct (per 10/16/70 National Dragster). -- RT | Best NHRA national event times were 6.889/203.61. In which car(s) did he run those times? Also, we show a 6.52 in both the Jim Busby ‘Smothers Bros.’ car and the Korody-Colyer car. It is unlikely that Dwight ran those amazing times in both cars this year. We need to confirm. |

Notes: Pomona 5.973 was the 12th entry into the Cragar Five-Second Club. It was the #2 qualifier as well. Unfortunately, Dwight fouled against Don Garlits in round one. He also ran 6.288/222.22 at Indy 1974 (#29 qualifier). Dwight upset Jim Bucher with a massive holeshot in round one, 6.270/215.31 to 6.164/232.55. He shut off against Gaines Markley in round two. Those were Dwight's only two NHRA national events this year. He ran 6.10 at Pomona WCS. The photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. | Dwight qualified #11 with a 6.31/220.58 at the AHRA Winternationals, but he broke the engine and could not run; the first alternate, Dick LaHaie, replaced him. His 5.973/236.22 qualified #2 at Pomona, but he fouled against Don Garlits in the first round. He was the defending champion for the Bakersfield March Meet. But in '74, he failed to qualify for the 32-car field. On his first qualifying attempt, he broke a rear end. The race was postponed a week due to rain, and he ran 6.61 to qualify for the field briefly. On a last-ditch qualifying attempt, he threw a blower belt. Shortly after that (March 2, 3), he was at Irwindale for the Fox Hunt race. His 6.49 qualified on the "bump" for an eight-car car show. He and Gary Hazen had a great race in the opening round that saw Dwight's 6.42/226 defeat Gary's 6.42/222. He ran an easy 7.21/167.59 in the semifinal to beat a tire-shaking, Tom McEwen. Unfortunately, he lost to upstart Frank Prock in the final. He ran at Fremont on March 31 for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Dwight beat an out-of-shape Arley Langlo in the first round, but a 6.34 in the second round lost to James Warren's 6.26. On April 6, OCIR had 42 Top Fuel cars trying to qualify for sixteen spots for the AHRA Grand American. Dwight's 6.30 qualified #3. He made it into the second round before being beat by Dan Richins' 6.49. The NHRA Division 7 Opener at Pomona was an unusual twelve-car show. Salisbury's 6.10/233.16 qualified #3. He beat Bob Noice in the first round, with a 6.33, but he lost to Ray Church in the next round when his two-speed transmission failed to shift. Dwight was back at Irwindale for the third annual T-Shirt Night event. He qualified for the sixteen-car show, but he lost to eventual winner James Warren in the first round. He competed at the PDA Championships at OCIR but lost early. |

Notes: Salisbury started his season at Ontario Motor Speedway for the New Year's Day race. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show with a 6.34/199. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.25/220 beat a crossed-up Dave Braskett. Eventual winner James Warren stopped him in round two with a 6.03/213 that took out his 6.22/224. Dwight qualified #9 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals; this set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Paul Longenecker. Dwight smoked the tires in that first-round race to a 7.04/157.34 that lost to Paul's 6.24/222. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #14 with a 6.02/222.22. Unfortunately, he lost to Warren in the first round. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #16 in the 32-car field with a 6.14. He got a solo in the first round, when Gary Read shut off on the line with problems. Dwight advanced with a 6.44/153.84. In round two, his 6.36/222.22 beat a wheelstanding Gary Cornwall. He got another solo in round three when Denver Schulz could not show after blowing his engine in round two. Dwight ran 6.35/226.13 to advance. Once again, it was Warren who put an end to his run. In the semifinal, Salisbury's 6.50 lost to Warren's strong 5.90 (Low ET). He did not run at Gainesville for the Gatornationals, but on March 28, he was at Fremont for the opening NHRA Division 7 race. He qualified #9 at 6.21/232.55, but low qualifier Warren stopped him in the opening round. James' 5.97/235 put Dwight's 6.43/207.37 on the trailer. Notes: Runner up to Gary Beck at OCIR World Finals 1981. | Dwight was at Sacramento on June 27 for the NHRA Western Regional. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.92/229.60. Dwight beat Mike Palmer's 6.05/226 in the first round, with a 5.95/231.96 and a semifinal 6.03/192.31 advanced when Gary Cornwall broke a rear end. He was to face Jim Murphy in the final, but Murphy had blown his engine in the semifinals and was unable to make the final so Dwight soloed for the win with a 9.07. Dwight attempted to qualify for the eight-car show at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he was the fifth alternate with a best of 6.20/230.76. He also failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where his 6.13/223.43 was good for the sixth alternate. |

Notes: Dwight won the NHRA Division 5 race at Bandimere in July. He beat Keith Craig's 6.13/230 in the final with a 5.95/231.95. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, he qualified #12 but lost to Jeb Allen in the first round. He was back at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of July. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.02, and in the first round, his 6.01 beat Butch Blair. In the semifinals, Dwight picked up to a 5.95/234.37 to beat Doug Kerhulas' 5.99/228. In the final, he went up against Allen. Salisbury took the victory with a track record 5.907 at 233.76 over Jeb's 6.12/235. Notes: Dwight's 1983 season: he had a lousy weekend at Pomona for the NHRA Winternational. The car looked like it had a bad fireball on one qualifying attempt, but in reality, a breather tube came off, spraying oil that caught fire. On another attempt, he hurt the engine, and the team was done without ever making a complete pass. He was Q13 at Summernationals at 5.986/238.72, R1 loss to Shirley Muldowney, 5.82/210 to 6.205/235.60; Q8 at Denver at 6.000/225.56 but hurt the engine and could not run in eliminations; Q10 at Indy at 5.724/242.58, R1 loss to Joe Amato, 5.63/259 to 5.976/238.09; Q7 at Fremont at 5.717/240.64, R1 win over Jerry Ruth, 5.759/236.22 to broke, R2 loss to Gary Beck, 5.47/248 to 5.668/246.57; Q13 at the OCIR World Finals at 5.741/242.58, R1 loss to Richard Tharp, 5.66/238 to 5.756/244.56. On the match race trail, Dwight was the second qualifier at Fremont in April for the Fuel Wars show at 6.11/231. He improved to 6.06/231 in an R1 defeat of Arley Langlo but lost to Butch Blair in R2, 6.56 to an off-pace 8.28. |

Notes: Rocky Childs found his old car on the East Coast. Had chassis restored by Howard Zikes. Car originally set up to cackle only. Car did not attend Bakersfield Cacklefest in 2002, but did appear in 2003 and actually ran down the track. Also cackled in 2004 and 2005. We need to find out if it ran down the track any of those years. |
