Notes: Samolyk did not race at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he ran in Atlanta early in March for the second NHRA Division 2 race. Only five cars showed, and his 6.76/198.23 qualified #4. He upset Al DaPozzo in the first round with a 6.77/196.50 to a troubled 7.44/118. John then got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal and took an easy 11.46/74.07 pass. He faced low qualifier Darrell Gwynn in the final, and his 6.80/193.54 finished runner-up to Gwynn's 6.64/206. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.58/206.89 qualified #10. Unfortunately, the car lost fire against DaPozzo in the first round. He was back in Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.56/204.54 qualified #6. DaPozzo fouled against him in the opening round, and he advanced with a 6.66/202.70. In the semifinal, his 6.57/204.08 lost to eventual winner Bubba Sewell's 6.50/208.

Notes: On May 5, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 opener. His 6.56/205.84 qualified second to Frank Manzo's 6.43/220. But John slowed to an off-pace 7.00/201.79 in the first round and lost to John Paris' 6.84/205. He went to Beech Bend on June 2 for the NHRA Sportsnationals. There a 6.59/214.18 qualified #10. He upset Gary Cellone in round one, where his 6.75/201.25 beat Gary's quicker,6.70/211. In the second round, he lost to Steve Group. Not long after, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He ran 6.82/191.40 to qualify #12. But he could not run the first round of eliminations and was replaced by alternate Gregg Gorman. Samolyk qualified #4 at New England in the first week of August for the NHRA Division 1 final with a 6.47/196.07. His opponent, John Armstrong, broke in the opening round, and Samolyk advanced with a 6.71/193.13. He fouled and shut off (7.49) in the semi-final against Arnie Karp's 6.51. The following week, he was at Maple Grove for its FC Nationals. A 6.60 qualified #4 for the eight-car field. He had problems in round one and shut down to 9.17 in a loss to Carl Ruth's 6.70. John was the first alternate at the NHRA Keystone Nationals with a 6.41/213.16. Shortly after that, he was back at Englishtown for its U.S. All-Pro FC Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and his 6.86/205.47 in the first round lost to Carol Henson's 6.66/212.

Notes: Samolyk was in Atlanta in March for the NHRA Division 2 race. The race was postponed for one week, and only three cars returned. He was one of them, but he crossed the centerline while racing against Porter Donn in the first round and was disqualified. He qualified #7 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.35/219.19. An opening round 6.56/217.02 fell to Terry Mullins' 6.65/211. In May, he was at Maple Grove for its Spring Funny Car Nationals but shut off with heavy tire shake in the first round. John attempted to qualify at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, but his 6.60/207.80 best was good for the first alternate. The following week (June 21), he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division 1 race. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.48/205.01, but in the first round, his 6.51/208.81 lost to low qualifier Frank Manzo's 6.43/214. He was at Englishtown in July for the NHRA Summernationals. Qualifying wasn't much of an issue as only fourteen cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. His 6.56/212.81 got him the #8 spot in the field. In round one, he improved to 6.49/212.81 to beat low qualifier Peter Gallen at 6.56/217. He got the "odd-lot" solo in round two and advanced with a 6.48/212.66. Another 6.48 at 212.21 beat Carol Burkett's 6.54/215 in the semifinals. He faced another woman driver in the final, Carol Henson. John’s times were about a tenth better than Henson had been running. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.36/214.08 behind pole sitter, Frank Manzo's 6.32/217. These two would work their way to the final. John beat Jim Bailey in the first round, with a 6.37/205.85 and in round two his 6.39/205.33 put Dave Sebring on the trailer. He improved to 6.30/219.56 in the semifinals to stop Arnie Karp's 6.34/222 from advancing. He ran his best in the final, a 6.29 at 213.32, but it wasn't his ET that gave him the win, it was his quick reaction time as Manzo ran a quicker 6.24/221.

Notes: Sampson replaced Charley Storrr's Olds engine that he ran at the beginning of the 1957 season with a fuel injected Olds engine from Joe Dillon. Dillon joined Sampson and Mudersbach and the dragster had immediate phenomenal success in Sampson's old car. They set a new national record in the A Open Gas class.
