Notes: Santa Ana ran a weekly four-barrel class in '55. Pomona and Colton also had a four-barrel class, but Vic Smaldino was the man to beat at Pomona, and John Bradley owned the class at Colton. In the first half of the '55 season, Bill Sanders owned the four-barrel class at Santa Ana. He took class wins on Feb. 20 (106.38 mph), Mar. 6 (111.11 mph), Mar. 13 (110.35 mph), Mar. 20 (103.09 mph), Apr. 17 (102.95 mph), Apr. 24 (104.96 mph), May 1 (104.52 mph), and May 29 (102.04 mph). In the fall, he took wins on Sep. 25 (104.16 mph), Oct. 2 (100 mph), and Nov. 20 (104.16 mph). He used a Willys hood for a nose. Rollout garnered feature treatment in mid-67 issues of Drag Strip and SS&DI magazines, but car was not frequently seen at the head of the pack. - RT | On one of the cars first outings, Sanders faced Dee Keaton and his SOHC-powered Comet in a best of three match race at Irwindale on June 3. In the first race Clare fouled away an 8.80/166.97 while Gates won with a 9.01/163. The second race saw Keaton cross the centerline. Sanders fouled again. In the last race, the 'Cuda ran 8.65/166.97 for the win. Clare was at Bristol for the NHRA Springnationals, but he fouled against Ed Schartman in the first round. He was at Maple Grove on June 17 where he made just one exhibition pass, an 8.60/166.35. He failed to qualify for the Drag News Invitational at Atco on June 28, but in a consolation race against Don Gay, he set Top Speed for the funnies at 173.41. In Connecticut on July 4 for a 12 car show, Clare beat Mel Perry in the first round, with an 8.97/164.23 and in round two his 8.39/166.35 stopped Wolford's 8.95 in the second round before losing in the semifinals. He came back out later for a solo and ran 9.00/167.28. — Ron Howard

Sanders went on to pilot the #2 Jungle Jim car in 1969. The car was subsequently campaigned as "Chicago Harry" (owner/driver Harry Claster) by late in the 1969 season. - RT | Jim St. Clair and Jack Green owned Boss Bite, Inc. Confirmed 8.36 at 175.78 at 1968 All-American Funny Car Championships at Bristol. The car was billed as the "Worlds Most Beautiful Funny Car." - Danny White | Sanders drove the car at the Irwindale's New Year's Day meet, where he qualified fifth with an 8.25 but failed to advance to the final of the sixteen-car field. On January 14, he qualified last with an 8.29/174.75 at an eight-car show at OCIR and ran 8.19/170.13 over Ronnie Runyan's 8.34/171 in the first round. He soloed in the semi's when Terry Hedrick was shut-off on the line with a fuel leak. In the final, his 7.71/187.91 Low ET and Top Speed run fell to Jim Liberman's 7.86/183. Another runner-up finish came on January 21 at the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline when he blew his engine in the final against Eddie Schartman. At Lions on February 24 at a sixteen-car show, an 8.55 was only good for the third alternate. The following day on February 25, at Carlsbad's South Coast Funny Car Championships, Sanders first-round 8.31/173.07 beat Rich Hammons 8.58/165 in Samson. In the second round, he smoked the tires and ran a losing 8.68/174.40 against Dick Loehr's 8.14/169. Back at Irwindale on March 3, an 8.19/175.43 qualified Clare sixth in a sixteen-car field, but a first-round 7.97/186 pass from Lew Arrington trailed Limefire's 8.24/176.81. In June at Aquasco for the third annual Funny Car Invitational, Sanders ran a first-round 8.31/154 over Malcolm Durham, but the event was then rained out after just the first-round was run. In September, he started driving Liberman's second car.
