Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis, Indiana, where he did not qualify with his best NHRA national event times, 6.570/214.28. He ran 6.44 at Union Grove and was at Rockingham on Sept. 22 for the IHRA US Open Championships, where he qualified #2 with a 6.62 behind Paul Smith's similar 6.62 in the "Fireball Vega." He ran well, reaching the semifinals before his 6.85 lost to Ron Colson's motor-blowing 6.56 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Since Colson could not return for the final, Savage got back in to run Gene Snow for the title. Unfortunately, an off-pace 7.13/203.13 finished runner-up to Snow's 6.65/202. Savage was doing an article for National Dragster in '78. At that time, he mentioned that he had run a 6.41 best driving the "Hawaiian" in '74. |

Notes: Denny's first time driving the Chi-Town car came on March 2 at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. Runner up to Gene Snow at IHRA Bristol June 1975 (6.46/224.43 bests). His 6.33/230.17 lost to Prudhomme in the semis at the PHR 131 race. Denny qualified #14 at 6.358/226.13 at Ontario, the team's only NHRA event. He beat Dave Condit in round one when Dave lost fire, hitting 6.452/199.11. Norm Wilcox did not show in round two, and Denny got a 6.660/184.80 bye run. Austin Coil really turned up the wick in the semis, and Denny ran a season-best 6.210/231.36 to defeat John Lombardo's decent 6.344/225.00. Prudhomme could not back up his amazing 5.987/241.53 numbers, but a 6.158/240.64 made Denny's 6.937/155.44 a runner-up in the final. Finished third in 1975 IHRA points (tied with Gene Snow). Hometown confirmed 1975. 787 or 781? Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975. |

Notes: Denny was at Martin, Michigan, for a sixteen-car show in June. While he didn't make the final, he did run impressive times of 6.27 and 6.28. Indy 1977 was a quick field. Savage and the Hustler were the second alternate at 6.248. But it made Coil realize that if they were going to run national events, he had to take a different approach. Due to finances, it had to happen gradually, but just few years later, they qualified number one at the Winternationals and went on to win two world championships. — Paul Stenquist |

Notes: 787 or 781? - "I drove it last for him, after Grant Meredith," he (Denny Savage) said. "I was making a run at OCIR, and the front torsion bar broke at about 300 feet, causing the car to make an immediate left turn and crash over the guardrail. The body flew off about a 100 feet into the air, and the car was bent up pretty bad. I sustained minor rib injuries and other bumps and bruises. John spent a long time rebuilding it, and then sold it to the people that made the movie about Shirley [Heart Like A Wheel]. It's the car that was in the movie." - Denny Savage, as related to Phil Burgess at NHRA.com - JMrn |

Notes: This car was a Bad Hombre, way ahead of its time. We were always trying something new every time it went to the starting line. - Denny Savage | Best times of 6.09/239 cited in ad to sell the car. 1978 IHRA Champion. - Danny White | Savage started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.277/209.79 qualified #6. In the opening round of competition, his 6.39/214 beat John Collins' 6.55/217. But in round two, an off-pace 6.62/230 lost to Tommy Ivo's 6.48/226. The team then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. There Denny's 6.57/230.17 qualified #8. He beat Jim Adolph in the first round, with a 6.54/233.76. In round two, his opponent, Gene Modlin, broke on the line and the "Powers-Steel" car advanced with a 6.79/231.95. In the semifinals, he faced Don Prudhomme, and both smoked the tires. The "Snake" recovered first, and his 6.86/213 beat Denny's 7.75/134.00 to the stripe. Gainesville was their next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. The team continued to qualify well, with a 6.38/216.34 getting the #8 spot in the field. But a troubled 7.55/134.73 in the first round, lost to Shirl Greer's 6.35/230. Traction wasn't the best at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Savage's 7.16/196.50 qualified #2 behind Dale Pulde's 6.88/221. In round one, he improved a lot, where his 6.65/202 beat Pete Williams' 6.89/213 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Frank Oglesby got off the line a little quicker in the semifinals, and his 6.60/218 hung on to win over Denny's 6.59/218. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a great 6.09/212.26 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car show. Dennis Geisler broke on the line in the first round, and Savage ran 6.17/215.31 to advance. In round two, a 6.18/217.91 beat Bob Pickett's slightly quicker 6.16/230. He got another solo in the semifinals when Dave Condit, driving the "L. A. Hooker," had the car lock up in gear. A 6.22/230.76 advanced to the final. His final-round opponent was Tripp Shumake, driving Johnny Loper's Arrow. The two had a good race, but the Camaro had a bit more in it than the Arrow, and Savage's 6.21/214.79 got the win over Tripp's hard-charging 6.30/226. From hero to zero. The following week (April 2), Denny failed to qualify for the eight-car field at the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. What's more surprising was that it only took a 6.59 to make the field. The roller-coaster ride continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. There he qualified #2 with a 6.36/204. A 6.75/201 beat Greer's troubled 13.05 in round one. In round two, Les Cassidy also had problems against him, and Savage advanced with a 6.49/216. Even his semifinal opponent, Williams, could not get in a good run against him, and Denny ran 6.56/225 to meet low-qualifier, Pulde in the final. When it's your day, it's your day as Pulde broke, and Savage got the victory with a 7.12/223. On May 21, the IHRA held its Dixie Nationals at Atlanta. Savage qualified poorly, down in the #9 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Pulde. Crew Chief Dan Geare must have set the car on "kill" as Savage cracked off a 6.26 to beat Dale's 6.35. Denny set Low ET in round two with a 6.24 that sent Greer packing. He had a good race with Dave Settles in the "Mr. Norm" car in the semifinals. Savage's 6.34 came out on top over Settle's 6.37. He faced the "Chi-Town" bunch in the final. Savage had the edge in terms of their ET's in competition. But Williams pulled out a squeaker, running 6.45/215 to get the win over Denny's 6.47/226.13. Savage was also credited with Top Speed at 228.42. Savage was in Milan in July for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.50 but improved to 6.11/229.5 (Low ET and Top Speed) in the opening round over Pete Williams, who had shut the "Chi-Town Hustler" off on the line. Another 6.11 at 217.91 beat Roger Lindamood in the semifinals, and he went up against Tom Anderson in the final. Anderson was no slouch as he had won his semifinal race with a 6.12. But in the final, Tom had a wheelie bar break and went into a huge wheelstand while Savage ran a motor-blowing, on fire, 7.28/134.94 for the victory. Best NHRA ET of 6.120 236 at the Summernationals, which Denny won over Ed McCulloch. | We need to confirm the 6.02 from OCIR. |

Notes: Denny qualified #6 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 6.160/236.84, and in the first round, ran a strong 6.02/239.36 to beat Kenny Bernstein. Unfortunately, in round two, he lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer on a holeshot, 6.35/228 to Denny's 6.32/226.70. That was Denny's only NHRA national event of the year. | Car sold to Bill Daily |

Notes: Savage was the third alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.09/234.98. On the way to Indy, the trailer burned to the ground due to a fire that started in the trailer brake system. Lost R&D JP-1 motor as well. Kirk Kuhns was driving the truck. - Denny | Best NHRA national event times before that were 5.984/245.23 at Columbus. Where were the 5.89/252.10 times run? Denny ran 5.972/245.90 at Ontario. What car was that in? |

Notes: Denny Savage's last Funny Car ride. He filled in for John Martin, who had a pinched nerve at the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.13/241.93 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and his first-round 6.16/238.72 advanced when Sherm Gunn broke. In the semifinals, his tire smoking 7.94/123.45 lost to Gary Densham's 6.09/238. He also attempted to qualify the car at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but his 6.123/231.48 best failed to make the show. |
