Notes: Four factory '65 Comets with the 427 SOHC engine went to Nicholson, Proffit, Beswick and DeLorean. A number of others (like this one) were outfitted with the 427 Hi-riser wedge. Some were retrofitted with the Cammer as that engine became more available. This entry reflects the car in season-opener, legal A/FX trim. - RT

Notes: This was one of the original four Mercury Comets built by the Logghe Brothers. Nicholson, Chrisman, and Kenz & Leslie got the other three. Injected 427 SOHC, C-6 automatic combo. Set both ends of the S/XS national record at 8.61 and 172.72 mph at Tulsa World Finals and bettered that by better than three-tenths at Indy. - Danny White | The 1966 NHRA Nationals at Indy were the first to feature dedicated classes for funny cars: S/XS, A/XS, B, XS. Supercharged experimental Stock was where the blown cars and class-dominating (but normally aspirated) Logghe Comets went to play. Schartman and his yellow RSE Merc clinched the S/XS trophy with an 8.28/174.41 blast. Since the NHRA had not yet established a formal Funny Car Eliminator, the class runs for S/XS were the closest thing the fans would get. - RT | Listed in FUELFC due to its lightweight, flip-top configuration despite being injected. | Roy Steffey and Eddie Schartman were tough to beat in '66. Few did. Roy was the owner, and the car cost $16,000 to build. This was the third Comet delivered of the four Comets built. The 2,000 lb. Logghe built Comet, and the bare 118" chassis weighed just 97 lbs. Depending on track conditions, the Ford rear end used either a 3.90 gear or a 4.11. The SOHC engine was stock-sized, but Delta Machine reworked the crank. M/T rods and pistons were used, and the compression was 11:1. Crane supplied many cams to the SOHC Ford cars, and this one was no different as two Nitro 612 cams were used. Aluminum ported heads helped keep the weight down. The stock valves measured 2.25 for the intake and 1.90 for the exhaust. Compared to the Chrysler, the combustion chambers were large at 124 ccs compared to 98 ccs. The pump and fuel injector were Hilborn products, and short tubes were used for high rpm operation. The engine made over 1,000 hp burning 96% nitro. | Schartman debuted his new flip-top Comet in April at Motor City Dragway, where he made about 15 runs to shake down the car. After that, the car was taken to Capitol Raceway for Jim Kelly to photograph for Super Stock Magazine. The car's competition debut came at Cecil County, where Ed faced Bob Harrop in a best of three match. Schartman won two straight. Things did not go so well when he faced Maynard Rupp and his Hemi-powered Chevelle at US 131 on May 1. Rupp beat him two straight with times of 9.56/157 and 9.49/161 against Eddie's 9.90/144 and 10.02/140. But as Schartman dialed the car in, the ETs continued to drop. He was at Atco on May 28 for a best of three against Del Heinelt driving the "Seaton Shaker" Chevelle. Schartman won two straight with a best of 9.29/150. The next day (May 29), he was at Englishtown, where he faced the four-engined "Wagonmaster" of Tom McCourry. Ed again won two straight with a best of 9.09/155. A big Funny Car show was run at York US 30 on June 11. The Comet was flying, setting a track record 8.43 at 162.57. An 8.57/161.57 beat Hans Anderson in the first round, but a wheelstand in the second round forced him to shut off against Houston Platt. The following day found him in a match race against Bob Harrop, driving Al Graeber's new "Tickle Me Pink" Charger. Ed won all three of their races with runs of 8.85/154.90, a track record 8.77 at 155.97, and a 9.06/161. Another match race win came at Cordova on June 18, where he beat Arnie Beswick two straight with times of 8.98/149.95 and 9.05/156.79. It was then off to Dragway 42 the next day, where he faced Tommy Stringfield's "Triple Trouble," a three-engined Nova. Again, Schartman won all three races, running 9.30/152.80, 9.37/154.90, and 9.24/154.90. He got knocked down a notch at US 30 on June 25, where he lost two straight to Ronnie Sox. The "Sox & Martin" 'Cuda was running great, and in the first race, Ronnie's 8.64/157 beat Eddie's 8.87/152.28. In the second race, the Comet went into a wheelstand, and he lost to Sox's 8.67/155. Eddie was at York, PA, on July 17 for the NHRA Division 1 race. He set a new S/XS record of 8.87. The final was supposed to be between him and Jack Chrisman's similar blown Comet, but Chrisman had bearing problems, and Ed soloed for the S/XS class win with an 8.82/159. Shortly after that, he competed at the CARS Magazine meet at Cecil County, but he lost to eventual winner Mike Buckle driving the "Ramchargers" Dart in the first round, of the 2,000 lb. fuel class. He set an 8.29 track record at Lakeland while beating Steve Bovan three straight on August 14. His speed on the run was 163.63. At the NHRA US Nationals, he beat Mercury teammate "Dyno Don" Nicholson for S/XS class honors with an 8.28/174.41. These two would have a match race at Martin, Michigan's US 131 on September 17. It was a history-setting match, and while Schartman lost, he did have the footnote in history by being the car in the other lane when Nicholson ran the first "seven. "Dyno's" 7.96/169 beat Eddie's 8.58/168.35. He faced Dick Landy at Thompson on September 25, where he beat him three straight with a best of 8.48/173.65. Early in October, he had a rematch against Sox at Maple Grove. Schartman set both ends of the track record in their first race with an 8.46/166.66. But while getting the car ready for the second race, Ed had his engine let go. He could not run the last two races, and Sox won the match by forfeit. Ed won it all at the NHRA World Finals in Tulsa, where six of the nation's top machines faced off. In round one, he beat Larry Reyes, 8.674/172.41 to 9.08/161. He got a bye in round two but ran a Low ET (to that point) 8.609/172.41. The two flip-top Mercurys met in the final, as Eddie lined up against Dyno Don. Schartman dropped more than two tenths to take an 8.386/174.08 victory over Nicholson's off-pace 10.60-80. Ed grabbed another victory by winning the Irwindale Funny Car Spectacular run on November 1. He beat Jim Liberman's new Nova in the opening round of eliminations with an 8.83/173.97 (Top Speed). His 8.50/173.41 took out Cecil Yother, who smoked the tires in his topless Belvedere in the semifinal. He faced off against Gas Ronda in the final, and Ronda got out of shape and shut off while Eddie ran 8.44 (Low ET) at 172.08 for the win. Over the season, Ed traveled 70,000 to 80,000 miles between races.

Notes: "Fast Eddie" Schartman was one of the racers chosen to receive one of the Logghe-built Comet Cyclones from Ford Motor Company. Schartman had worked his way up the racing ranks before getting into funny car racing. In 1966, he was one of the top funny car racers with the advanced machines. In 1967, he was already on his third paint job when he received the Air Lift sponsorship. The Air Lift Rattler featured the updated Logghe chassis and kept on winning. With Amos Satterlee tuning, Schartman won the Manufacturer's Funny Car Championship at Orange County with runs of 8.17/184.08, 7.85/185.18 (Low ET), and 7.87/185.56. - BS | 427 SOHC, C-6 auto combo. | Ran 8.65/164 at AHRA Winters on January 29. Eddie first ran a blower late in the year at Fremont's Third Annual exhibition Car Championships in Oct. They ran 30% nitro and beat Ronnie Runyan and Pat Minick, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinals with an 8.20/179. He won the race beating Terry Hedrick's Corvair in the final with an 8.08 (Low ET). A week later, he was at Irwindale for the experimental Stock Invitational. Eddie won this race, too. He beat Doug Thorley and Roger Lindamood in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, his 7.97/181.08 beat Butch Leal's 8.28/150. Schartman faced Ron O'Donnell in the final, and he set Low ET with a 7.93 at 181.36 to win. He was at Lions in the first week of November for the East-West Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, he exploded a blower in the opening round and lost to Leal. He wasn't down and out for long as he then won the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. All cars ran three rounds of racing, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. An opening round 8.17/184.04 beat Leal's 8.22/176. His second round 7.85/185.18 won over Thorley, and a 7.87/185.56 in round three assured him a spot in the final. There he faced surprise finalist Roy Gay. - Ron Howard Manufacturers Meet, Orange County, CA 11/25/67

Notes: This was one of the original four Mercury Comets built by the Logghe Brothers. Nicholson, Chrisman, and Kenz & Leslie got the other three. Injected 427 SOHC, C-6 automatic combo. When the season started, these Comets were still the cars to beat in the new Funny Car class. They were still the cars to go after into July, but their performance advantage had dwindled. There were a lot of up-and-coming blown cars that were ready to pounce. Tires were still holding back their performance, but that would soon change. Ed started the year at Fremont on January 7 for a best of three match race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman and his Nova. He won the match three straight with runs of 8.35/176.81, 8.37/176.81, and an 8.14. Jim's best was 8.61. Ed was runner-up to teammate Don Nicholson at the AHRA Winternationals. In qualifying, an 8.98/158.17 got him the #4 spot in the eight-car field. He beat Arnie Beswick in the first round with an 8.55; in the semifinals, his 8.65/164.83 beat Roger Wolford's 8.90. But in the final, despite running his best time of the event at 8.48/169.49, he lost to "Dyno's" Low ET of the meet run of 8.26 at 171. The following week (February 5), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran in the S/XS class and set Low ET for the class in the first round, with an 8.33 at 173.41 to beat Bobby Wood. Unfortunately, the car broke on the run, and he could not make the second round. Shortly after that (February 18), he was in Las Vegas for the Stardust National Open. He won there, stopping Pete Gates's similar Comet in the final with an 8.22/171. The next day (February 19), he won the Irwindale Factory Showdown beating Fred Goeske's "Hemi-Cuda" in the final. Ed had set Low ET of the meet in qualifying with an 8.21. He then beat Charlie Allen in the first round before running an 8.26/174.08 in the semifinal over Jim Liberman's 8.73/169 in his Nova. Goeske got out of shape in the final and shut down, while Schartman ran 8.71/170.77 for the win. On March 5, he faced Hubert Platt's SOHC-powered Mustang for a best-of-three match at Lakeland. Platt won the first race with a 9.59/159 over Eddie's off-pace 9.72/151.77, but the Comet came back to win the next two races and the match with a best of 8.61/168.85. He went up against the strongest Mopar Funny Car at the time, the "Ramchargers" Dart driven by Jim Thornton at Detroit Dragway early in April. This was the first time out for the team's new car. Not even sure how it was possible, but in the first race, Jim's 9.02/159 beat Eddie's 8.61/164.53. That's quite a long nap on the starting line. But Ed then ran another 8.61/164 in the second race to beat the Dodge's 9.28/152, and a final 7.93/166.05 got him the match race victory over Thornton's 9.17/158. The following week (April 9), he went up against Beswick at Indianapolis. Arnie broke both his Pontiacs in trying to beat the "Air Lift Rattler." Ed won all three races easily with times of 8.42/173.70, 8.64/171.52, and 8.37/174.15. On April 16, he ran Dick Jesse at LaPlace. The two only got to have one race as the GTO blew a torque convertor. But in their race, Eddie reset the track record with his 8.32/167.59. That record would not stand long as he came out to make a solo for the match race win and reset it to 8.30/174.41. He had a rematch against Liberman at York near the end of the month. In their first race, the Comet broke a rear end on the line, and Jim won with an 8.63/163. The next race saw the Nova lose a transmission while Schartman ran a track record 8.17 at 167.28. The final race had both cars make it down the length of the track together. Liberman's blower-popping 8.54/163 just nipped Ed's 8.54/151.51. In May, Jesse had a rematch against Schartman with his "Mr. Unswitchable" GTO. They raced at Sunset Dragway's 1/8 mile track. This match didn't go any better for the Pontiac driver as he lost all three races to the Comet. Going into the race, Ed had held the track record at 5.74. He ran 5.49, 5.51, and 5.54 in winning the match. Schartman found himself at Capitol Raceway on May 13 for the NASCAR Grand Opener. He made his way to the final by running 8.46/173.74 while beating Malcolm Durham. He faced Thornton in the final, and the car refused to fire. It would have been a good race between the two as Jim soloed for the victory with an 8.46/167. The following day, he was at West Salem for a match race against Bill Smith, who was driving the "Ottie's Auto" Gas Dragster. Eddie fouled in their first race and was late in the second, where his 8.03/163.93 lost to the dragster's 8.04/192. He faced another tough Dodge campaigner at York's US 30 on May 20 for a best-of-three match. The "Mr. Norm" Charger was a strong contender everywhere it raced. Gary Dyer drove the car, and in their first race, both ran 8.20, with Eddie crossing the stripe first. The speeds were 169.81 for the Comet and 171 for the Dodge. Eddie's 8.28/167.59 won the match in their second race when Gary lost an engine. He then went to Detroit Dragway for the AHRA Grandnationals. He won his first-round race over Hans Anderson easily, but in the second round, he lost to Doug Cook, driving the "Stone, Woods & Cook" Chrysler-powered Mustang. At Bristol in June, for the NHRA Springnationals, Ed's 8.25 qualified second behind teammate Nicholson's 8.23. An 8.43 in the opening round beat Clare Sanders in the "Limefire" Barracuda. Chrisman had won his first-round race but broke and could not continue, so Ed got to solo in round two. In the third race, he and eventual winner Tommy Grove had a great race, with Grove winning at 8.29/169 over Ed's 8.34/167.91. The following week (June 17), he won over a big field at York US 30. In round one, his 8.23/162.16 beat Durham's 9.20/137. Bruce Larson failed to fire against him in round two, so he advanced. Another 8.23 at 162.74 in the semifinal defeated Larry Reyes. This put him into the final against Liberman. Ed got the victory with a speed of 166.66. Atco Dragway hosted the Drag New Invitationals near the end of the month. It was an eight-car show, and during practice, Ed reset the track record with an 8.05. In the opening round, he ran 8.28/168.85 to beat Liberman's 8.39/162. An 8.48/162.74 took out Steve Bovan's 9.48/161 in the semifinal. He faced "Dyno Don" in the final, and the veteran reset the track record with his 8.03/172 getting the win over Schartman's 8.27/166 runner-up effort. On July 1, Ed went to Muncie for a match race against Kelly Chadwick. Ed's 8.55/163.93 beat Chadwick's 8.97/157, and in the second race, his 8.61/164.53 won the match when the Camaro blew its engine. He had a rematch at Cordova against Beswick on the 1,000-foot track. A quicker leaving 7.19 in their first race beat the Pontiac's 7.17. Beswick got out of shape in the second race and shut off. Even though Schartman had already won the match, the two returned for one more run. Ed ran his best time of the day, a 7.12 to win. Cecil County had four FCs run on July 22, and Ed was there. Roger Lindamood gated him at the start in his first race, and his 8.19/172 held on to win over the Comet's 8.09/170.13. Ed's ET was Low ET for the event. In the second race, the car's wheelstanding 8.28/168.22 lost to Thornton's 8.12/174. Ed could not run another round as he had bent the front axle in his landing. July ended with Eddie beating John Dallafior three straight at Quaker City, Ohio. The times there were pretty impressive as he ran 8.08/171, 7.99/178, and a solo 8.15/169. | Set both ends of the S/XS national record at 8.61 and 172.72 mph at Tulsa World Finals and bettered that by better than three-tenths at Indy. - Danny White | The 1966 NHRA Nationals at Indy were the first to feature dedicated classes for funny cars: S/XS, A/XS, B/XS.

Notes: Ed's Cougar didn't enjoy nearly as much success as his earlier flip-top Comets. He debuted the Cougar on June 9 at a match race against "Jungle Jim" at Cayuga. He made a first-ever warm-up pass of 8.89/160. In the best-of-three match against Jim, he won two straight. In the first race, he ran an 8.17/182 over Liberman, who blew his engine on an 8.25/170 run. Jim could not run after that, so Ed soloed with an 8.20 for the match race win. On June 30, he won a four-car show at Grand Bend Dragway in Ontario. In his first race, he ran an 8.14/169.49 over Bob Smith in Tom Sturm's Corvair. In his second race, he beat Arnie Beswick with an 8.39/164.83. In the final, he met with Gary Dyer in the "Mr. Norm" Charger. Unfortunately for Dyer, he fouled away Low ET 7.98 at a track record speed of 186.72 while Schartman motored to the victory. He was runner-up at the Super Stock Nationals on Sunday, July 21. He lost a blower in the final against Larry Reyes. On July 30, he ran at an eight-car show at US 30 in Gary, Indiana. A first-round 7.84/180 beat alternate Al Fontanini's 8.01/176. But in the semifinals, his 7.92/160 lost to the eventual winner Dick Loehr's 7.77/185. On September 22, Ed raced Liberman in another best-of-three match race. This time it was held at Maple Grove. He ran a 7.95/177 in a losing effort in the first race to Jim's 7.72/184. He won the second race when Jim fouled away another 7.72 at a track record 185.92. Ed beat the Nova in the third race to continue the hex he held in match race competition against Liberman. At Irwindale's Grand Prix, Ed won his first-round race over Lew Arrington with an 8.01/178.12. In the semifinal, he ran a strong 7.85/187.10 but lost to Ron Leslie's 7.80/193. Schartman was at OCIR on October 26 for an eight-car show. He beat Tommy Grove's Mustang in the first round with a 7.81/183.28. In the second round, he ran a 7.77/179.64 over Fred Goeske. In the final, he ran up against Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's new 'Cuda. Rich ran his best time (to this point), a 7.65 (Low ET) at 191.88, to take the win and give Eddie a runner-up finish. The next day (October 27), he was in Sacramento for the Drag Racing Magazine's East-West Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and Ed qualified #13 with a slow 9.25. In the first round, he lost to Goeske's 8.31/179 when the Cougar's transmission let go, slowing Ed to an 8.94/150.57. He took another first-round loss at Irwindale's East-West Meet on November 2. He ran a 7.93 that lost to Arrington's holeshot aided 7.97 in the "Brutus" Firebird. On November 16, Irwindale staged a Ford vs. Mopar Funny Car show. Four Mopars battled against four Ford FCs. Ed won his first race with an 8.04/175.43 over Dave Beebe in the "Super Chief" at 8.82/186. He lost his second race despite running a quicker 7.81/184.04 that lost to Charlie Allen's 7.88/186. In his third race, the SOHC motor was hurting, as Ed's losing 8.79/109.79 attests. Goeske beat him with an 8.01/183. Ed also ran at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet on December 1. He ran a best of 7.89/186.32 to beat Goeske. That pretty much sums up his Cougar's '68 season.

Notes: Ed started the '68 season with a win at the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline on January 21. A final round Low ET of the meet 8.43 beat a motor blowing Clare Sanders. The following week, on January 28, Schartman ran 8.27/177.28 to qualify eighth in the 32-car field at Lions for the AHRA Winter meet. A first-round 7.92 beat the Vicious Vette and a second round 8.11 beat a wheelstanding Ray Alley. He blew a transmission in the third round and lost to Gene Snow. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. NHRA had no Funny Car class, so he ran in Super Eliminator. Ed had a really good, close first-round race against Willie Borsch's AA/FA. The Comet's 7.95/182.18 barely beat Willie's 7.52/202. A second round 8.10/182.92 lost to Richard Galli's A/FD. In March, he finished runner-up to Don Nicholson at the Stardust National Open. Both he and Nicholson ran sevens in the final, but Don's Low ET of 7.83 beat his 7.99. He ran a match race against Larry Reyes in the Super Cuda on March 3 at Lakeland and in the first round, Reyes' 8.22 beat his 8.31. The second race had Reyes' win again with an 8.27 beating Eddie's 8.33. He won the last race with an 8.35, but lost the match race. In May, Pittsburgh held its Funny Car Championships and Ed made it into the semis before losing to Terry Hedrick. On May 10, at Union Grove's Night Funny Car Championships, Eddie won, running a final round 7.86/180 for the title. In June, he was still running the Comet when he ran a match race against Larry Reyes in the Super Cuda at Milan, Mich. Reyes won the first race with an 8.92/181 when Schartman lost a transmission and slowed to an 8.49/171. The second race saw Eddie win, turning a 7.81/181.50 over Larry's 7.99/179. In the final deciding race, Ed won with a 7.73 track record at 184.48 over the Super Cuda's 7.87/189. - Ron Howard | Super Stock & Drag Illustrated 9/68 cover car, 3-page feature. 120" Logghe chassis, 427 Cammer, C-6 auto trans. Notes: "Fast Eddie" Schartman had the Logghe brothers build him a new Cougar for '69. It cost $20,000 to build. The car had a 118" wheelbase The body was built by Fiberglass Ltd. Powering the car was a 1,500 hp SOHC Ford that burned 70% nitro. Eddie built his own engines, and crew chief Alan Gillis helped to maintain them. The motor remained stock-sized at 427 cubic inches and used M/T rods and Ansen 6:1 pistons. Crane supplied the cams. Ed ran steel heads. The 25% overdriven blower was built by Don Hampton. A four-port Hilborn injector sat on top. The power was transmitted to the 4.11 Ford rear end by a C-6 automatic transmission. The total weight was just under 2,000 lbs. | Schartman started the year on a good note by beating Arnie Beswick in a match race in Jan at Thunderbolt Raceway in Florida. It was cold, so the track wasn't at its best, as shown by the times. Beswick's 8.80/166 won the first race when Ed got crossed up and shut down. In the second race, Ed ran an 8.70/168.00 over Beswick, who lost a rear end. Ed ran a final 8.00/170.77 to win when Beswick, who had repaired the rear end, came out only to blow his transmission and lose the match. Schartman qualified #14 with an 8.32/174.75 at the NHRA Winternationals, but a holeshot 8.45 by Rich Siroonian beat his quicker 8.39 in the first round. He met Clare Sanders for a match race at Suffolk on April 6, and Clare ran a first-round 7.93/187 over his 8.16/173.07. It was more of the same in the second round, with Clare's 7.85/185 beating Ed's out-of-shape 8.30/178.67. He did win the third race with an 8.03/177.86, beating Sanders' 8.45/152, but he lost the match. At another match in April, he faced Bruce Larson at US 131, Martin, Mich. Larson won the first race with an 8.29/187 over Ed's 8.42/172.41. Schartman then tied things up with an 8.37/173.41 over Bruce, who had transmission problems. In the do-or-die final race, Larson took the victory and the match. Eddie did much better on April 27 at Cordova's 1,000-foot track, where he beat Arnie Beswick three straight with a best of 6.34/175.45 on the short track. He lost a tough one against Don Schumacher on May 10 at York US 30, where Don smoked him in two straight with runs of 7.69/196 and 7.90/194 that beat the Cougar’s 8.01/181.80 and 7.89/185.18. Then came a rematch against Sanders the following day (May 11) at Connecticut, where Sanders' 8.19/180 won the first race when Schartman lost a motor. Clare won the match when Ed couldn't return to make a run. On May 16, he went to Union Grove to run a UDRA race. He lost to eventual winner Sanders in the second round. A four-car round-robin race was held at LaPlace on May 18. Ed won all three of his races to win the event. An 8.05/176.12 in the first race beat Dee Keaton driving Fred Goeske's "Hemi-Cuda" at 8.65/145. In the second race, Schartman was up against Charlie Durel's AA/GD, driven by Steve Puneky. The dragster filled in for Mart Higginbotham, who was late arriving. The Cougar's 7.86/181.80 beat the dragster's 7.98/181.00. In the last race, he faced Leonard Hughes. Hughes hit some water on the track and shut off while Ed hustled to a 7.87/182.54 to win. Schartman was at Budds Creek on May 30 for its Memorial Day Funny Car Championships. The big SOHC motor was down on power here as his 8.11/178.00 in the first round, lost to Larson's 7.95/187. He ran a couple of consolation races, beating the "Frantic Ford" with an 8.09/176.81 and losing to Liberman's 8.07/184 with an 8.11/180.72. He won over a small funny car field at York US 30 on May 31 for an NHRA Division 1 points race. In the final, he beat Lee Jones in Malcolm Durham's Camaro with a 7.83/183 over Lee's 7.92/182. Ed qualified #12 with an 8.14/178.57 at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15, but in the first round, the car came up ailing and lost to Ray Alley's 7.98/180. Then came another rematch, this time against Larson at Maple Grove. Bruce won three straight, resetting the track speed record to 187.88 and hitting a 7.69 best over Ed's best of 7.89/178.57. A rematch was run against the two on June 21 at York US 30, where Ed ran a 7.86/182.92 holeshot over Larson's quicker 7.62 in the first race. Larson broke in the second race, and Schartman ran the backup car of Al Graeber and won with a 7.75/184.00 to Al's 7.87/184. Larson fixed his car and was hoping to win at least one of his three races, but he got out-of-shape and lost to Ed's 7.95/180.72 to give Ed three straight victories. He ran at Edgewater on July 3 but lost to Jim Liberman in the first round. At the Cars Magazine meet on July 20, he beat the Green Hornet in the first round, but in the second round, he met Sanders, who seemed to have a hex on him. Sure enough, Sanders' 7.56/192 beat Ed's 8.00/178.92. He ran much better at Sunset Dragstrip's fifth annual Funny Car Championships. The track was one-eighth mile. Ed advanced with a 5.19 in the first round, when Paula Murphy fouled. He got past the second round and met Mel Perry in the semifinal. Perry ran a 5.20 but lost to a 5.13 by Schartman. In the final, he met Larson, and Larson prevailed. At Atco on July 23 for their fourth annual Funny Car Championships, Ed set a 7.48 track record in the first round, at 187.88 over Lew Arrington's 7.81. In the semifinal, a 7.67/182.54 beat (finally) Sanders' 7.84/186. In the final, he met Fred Goeske and won, resetting his own track record with a 7.46. After such a good run, it was hard to take the first-round loss at the PHR Championships on August 2. Dean LaPole's 7.97 beat Ed's 8.10 in the first race of round one. The following day (August 3), he ran a match race at Shelby Raceway against Bobby Wood, and Wood beat Schartman three straight with a 7.54/194 best to Ed's 7.97/181 best. At the three-day Super Stock Nationals, he ran well the second day (August 9), but the last two rounds of Saturday's race were run on Sunday morning when the rains came. Al Graeber fouled against him in the semifinal. In the final, Danny Ongais beat him with a 7.75/193. He lost in the second round to Larry Reyes at the AHRA Nationals at New York on August 17. Ed managed to qualify for the US Nationals with a 7.53/191.89 for #14 on the grid. Unfortunately, he fouled against Larson in the first round. After Indy, Ed let Arnie Behling drive. I can't find another match race or race where Schartman drove the fueler. - Ron Howard

Notes: Confirmed 9.85 at 140.40 at Englishtown on 6/04/71. Qualified #15 at Indy 1971 at 9.860/138.67. Ran 9.75 at Blaney SC. Schartman was at Martin, Michigan, on August 8 for the PHR Championships. His 9.94 qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field, but he lost early in eliminations. On August 19, he was at Thompson raceway for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 9.84/141 in the first round, against Ron Hutter, who advanced with a 10.23/140. Eddie was at Marion Country on August 29 for the AHRA Grandnationals. It was the beginning of rules to make certain cars competitive. In '71, Chevy's were given a weight handicap.

Notes: Fast Eddie had his Boss 429 Maverick running some stout times in '72. Wayne qualified #15 at the NHRA Winternationals with 9.890 but lost to Don Carlton in round two. At the Gatornationals in March, a tube-framed Vega made it through tech, but Eddie's car had Comet tail lights, so it flunked tech and was forced to run B/Gas. He ran a 9.60 best and finished runner-up in Modified Eliminator. In May, at the Olympics of Drag Racing, Schartman ran a 9.63/142 best and collected runner-up money on Sunday. On June 4, Schartman was at Englishtown for a Pro Stock race. Unfortunately, his 9.85 in the first round lost to Carmen Rotonda's 9.80. Eddie did set Top Speed, however, at 140.40. At the first USRT event at Phenix City, he ran well but failed to make it into the finals. At the AHRA Tulsa National Challenge, he qualified #12 with a 9.60/144.46 but fouled out in round one. At the USRT Factory showdown at Capitol, Ed qualified #1 with a 9.41, but against Dick Landy in round one, he missed a shift and lost. On September 18, at the IHRA US Open, Schartman qualified #3 with a 9.46. Ran a first-round 9.48/144 and a second-round 9.50/144.92 before losing to Ronnie Sox in the semifinal.

Notes: Every Ford Pro Stock driver dropped their big block (either Boss 429 or SOHC powered) Mavericks and jumped on the small-block (351) Pinto bandwagon for '73. All except "Fast Eddie" Schartman. He had been one of the most successful Funny Car pilots in '67-'68, but his early years in Pro Stock did not get him the success he was used to. He ran the Boss 429 engine from the start in Pro Stock, first in a Cougar and then in a series of Comets/Mavericks. The '70-'71 seasons were not the greatest for him, but by '72 he was really starting to make some progress. So, he decided to run this combination again for '73. And it paid off. He beat some "name" drivers with this car which by all accounts was a dinosaur to everyone else.

Notes: Photo from Spokane 2002. Car was originally owned by Dick Hand, who was blind. Was raced in 74 and 75, then sat for 25 years until Dick Hand died, and the car was purchased by Randy Scheck from his widow. This car featured its original-30-year-old paint job.
