Notes: After graduating from high school, Schmidt paired up with the Demerest Brothers and they turned Schmidt's high school coupe into a fuel altered. Unfortunately, his parachute malfunctioned at Pomona on June 7 after a 157 mph run and he ended up on the other side of McKinley Avenue on the golf course. Steve did not run as well as he would have liked at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals where his 7.72/177.20 best failed to qualify. Schmidt attempted to qualify at the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but he was the fifth alternate with a best of 7.61/180.65. Steve qualified #15 at the NHRA Chief Nationals with a 7.64/180.46. Another 7.64 at 179.53 in the first round, lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.61/180. At the NHRA Fallnationals, he was the first alternate with a 7.69/178.28 best. He also failed to qualify at the NHRA World Finals where his 7.66/178.14 was the fourth alternate.

Notes: Steve qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.56/184.19. A 7.59/178.04 in round one, lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.48/183. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #9 with a 7.51/184.50. The problem with that was that he would have to run Bob Glidden in the first round. Anyone qualifying in the #9 spot in '87 would have to race Glidden as he qualified #1 at every NHRA National event. Steve attempted to compensate, and he fouled away a 7.63 while Glidden moved on with a 7.40. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Schmidt qualified for the show with a 7.57/184.91 which was good enough for the #13 spot in the field. He ran 7.47/185.79 in round one, but it wasn't enough to beat Warren Johnson's 7.44/185. He continued to do well in qualifying at the NHRA Cajun Nationals where there were 34 cars attempting to qualify. Steve's 7.61/182/92 qualified #11. Another 7.61 at 173.14 in the first round, lost to the race's eventual winner Butch Leal at 7.51/183. At the NHRA Springnationals, he failed to qualify for the show, only running a best of 7.75/182.85 (sixteenth alternate). Steve did not go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but he was back on the tour for the Summernationals at Englishtown. Once again he had problems and his best of 7.63/181.34 was good for the tenth alternate. He did not qualify for a NHRA race until the NHRA Northstar Nationals where his 7.63/180.07 gave him the #11 spot in the field. He got his first NHRA round win of the year when Joe Lepone fouled against him in the first round, and Steve advanced with a 7.66/181.05. In the second round, he was he who fouled against Johnson. He had to gamble as Warren won with a 7.58 compared to his red-light 7.65. Then came Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Unfortunately, Steve's best of 7.59/183.56 (eighth alternate) failed to make the show.

Notes: Schmidt was the second alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.47/186.87. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where his 7.45/185.95 qualified #15. He lost to eventual winner Rickie Smith in the opening round. The following week (March 20), he was one of 55 drivers attempting to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He ended up as the eleventh alternate at 7.45/186.68. Steve just missed the show at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals when his 7.49/184.23 failed to crack the 7.48 "bump."His 7.381/186.72 qualified #11 at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. In the first round, his 7.46/184.65 fell to Warren Johnson's 7.38/187. The 7.381/186.72 at Maple Grove and 186.87 at the Pomona Winters were his best NHRA national event times. Notes: Steve qualified #1 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 7.34 (Low ET) at 188.28. He was using a 500 cubic inch motor. He beat Rickie Smith in the first round, with a 7.44/187.50. A round two 7.43/187.50 beat Billy Ewing and in the semifinals, a 7.55/185.95 beat Joe Clark. In the final, he met Tim Nabors' mountain motored Camaro. Schmidt's 7.50/185.18 was good for the runner-up spot to Nabors’ 7.38/188. He was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where his 7.43/184.16 qualified #13. But in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.47/184.35 lost to Don Beverley's 7.41/185. Steve failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 7.47/184.61 best was good for the twelfth alternate.

Notes: Schmidt didn't race at NHRA's first two races of the year, but he was at Houston in March for the Supernationals. He qualified #15 with a 7.33/187.38, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.35/183.52 fell to the eventual winner Warren Johnson's 7.32/188. The following week (March 11), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Steve qualified #12, and a 7.42/187.20 in the opening round defeated Tim Nabors. He had one of the few 500 cubic inch cars that lasted until round two, where he lost to Rickie Smith's mountain-motored Firebird. Gainesville was his next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. Unfortunately, he was the third alternate with a 7.40/186.60 best. He did not compete at the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 7.32/187.85 qualified #12, and his 7.40/186.02 lost to Mark Pawuk's 7.37/187 in round one. Qualified 16th at Columbus at 7.45/184.76. He lost to Larry Morgan in round one. Notes: Steve attempted to qualify his Firebird at Gainesville, Memphis, Columbus, and Indy. At the Gatornationals, he ran a 7.361/188.99 that was mid-pack of the DNQ list. He had a similar qualifying effort at the Mid-South Nationals with a best of 7.424/186.16. The NHRA Springnationals. A best of 7.494/186.41 was good for the twelfth alternate. At Indy, Steve ran a best of 7.395/188.40 but did not get near the bump spot.

Notes: Steve qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.15/192.59. He had a close race with Jim Yates in round one, that he lost. Both cars ran 7.21 (Schmidt at 190.71). At the NHRA Quality Care Nationals in Arizona, a 7.20/191.40 qualified #13, but a 7.26/189.67 in the first round, lost to Kurt Johnson's 7.18/192. Houston was NHRA's next stop for the Slick 50 Nationals. Steve qualified #14 at 7.14/192.26, but he lost to Warren Johnson in the first round. He continued to have the first-round blues at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, and although he qualified well with a 7.19/192.92 (#13), he lost in the first round, when he slowed to a 7.26/190.63 that finished second best to Yates' 7.18/192. His next stop was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. Schmidt qualified #13 with a 7.14/193.09, but he again lost in round one. This time Mark Pawuk's 7.15/191 beat his 7.17/192.96. He got his first NHRA round win at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. He qualified #9 with a 7.15/194.00 and a first-round 7.16/193.50 beat Pawuk's close 7.17/193. Unfortunately, a second-round 7.20/192.92 lost to WJ's 7.12/195. Memphis was the next stop for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Steve got his best qualifying effort of the year with a 7.17/192.84 for the #4 spot in the field. In the first round, he got anxious and fouled against Lewis Worden. Notes: At Pomona, for the season-opening '95 NHRA Winternatiionals, eleven Oldsmobiles qualified for the sixteen-car field. The next time they raced at Pomona was for the '96 NHRA Winternationals. Olds had pulled out of the sport after the '95 season, and it sure showed at the season opener. Only six Cutlass' qualified, and Schmidt was the quickest. His 7.03/196.97 (Top Speed) qualified second to Warren Johnson's 7.01/196. Steve continued to push out the big speed readings with a 7.05/196.63 in round one, which defeated Mark Pawuk's 7.10/194. In round two, his 7.06/196.42 lost to Chuck Harris' 7.05/196. He was once again the fastest of the breed at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. WJ topped qualifying with a 7.04/195, but Steve's similar 7.04/196.59 (Top Speed) was right behind. He beat Mike Thomas's 7.10/194 in round one with a 7.08/195.39. But in round two, he fouled away a 7.05/196.24 against Ray Franks, who advanced with a 7.12/194. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, he remained the quickest Olds, but his 7.01/197.67 (Top Speed) was #5 behind four Firebirds. In the opening round, a 7.04/196.50 took out Troy Coughlin's 7.14/193. Tom Martino's 7.08/195 fell to his 7.05/196.59 in round two, and in the semifinal, he beat Mark Osborn's 7.10/194 with a 7.06/196.07. Unfortunately, he lost to Jim Yates in the final. He was not the quickest Oldsmobile at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals; his 7.04/196.63 qualified #7, and fellow Cutlass racer Mike Edwards qualified one spot ahead of him. Schmidt took an easy 7.57/142.74 win over a fouling Thomas in round one before losing a very close race against Yates in round two, where both drivers ran 7.04 (Schmidt at 196.59). It was also the first race of the year that Steve didn't set low speed. He then went to Rockingham in April for the NHRA Winston Invitational. A 7.02/196.20 qualified #7. Terry Adams lost to his 7.12/194.80 in the opening round. In round two, his 7.10/195.43 lost to Kurt Johnson's 7.05/195. Shortly after that, he was at Atlanta, where his 7.05/195.92 qualified #5 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Unfortunately, he fouled against Bruce Allen in the first round. His next stop was at Richmond in the first week of May for the NHRA Virginia Nationals. An excellent 7.02/196.76 qualified #3, and in the first round, his 7.03/196.89 defeated Kurt Johnson's 7.10/195. Despite running 7.04/196.46 in round two, he lost to Mike Edwards' 7.03/196. He started the year with three consecutive Top Speed of the Meet efforts at Pomona, Phoenix, and Gainesville (at 197.67, his best number of the year). Then Top Speed at Memphis. Low ET at the Mile Highs. Runner up to Yates at Gainesville and Denver. Runner up to Warren Johnson at Brainerd. Formerly listed 6.965. That did not occur in NHRA national event competition (confirmed best ET was 7.004 at Maple Grove). We are removing it until we get confirmation.
