Notes: This car, the tow rig, and all Schumacher's spare parts were stolen in Edgewood, Maryland, on March 15. Don offered a reward towards anyone finding the car. |

Notes: Tom West sez: This is one of those blue flame shots. This would have been from the Manufacturers Meet in '71, I think. This is the IFS Buttera chassis, but the body appears to be a bit high. Did something happen to the original body? I can't imagine building the car to sit quite that high. Also, it did not appear to be the best car to see out of either. One of several paint jobs he ran in 71. | Don Schumacher's new car for '71 was a 120" John Buttera car. The Ed Pink built 1,500 hp 426 Hemi was stroked to 480 cubic inches. The rods and pistons were by Pink. A Cragar manifold supported the Larry Bowers prepared blower, and Cragar also supplied the blower drive. The 80% nitro mix was pumped into the engine by an Enderle injection unit. A two-speed Lenco transmitted the power to a Halibrand Quick-change rear with 5.12 gears. | Don started the season at Irwindale on January 1 for its New Year's Funny Car Festival. Traction was poor, and Don's 7.43 qualified #9 in the sixteen-car field. He faced low qualifier (6.99) Jim Dunn in the first round, and Schumacher smoked the tires and shut off to 8.20 in a loss to Dunn's 6.96. The next day he was at Fremont for its New Year's Funny Car race. It was another sixteen-car show. Don's 7.41/197.36 in the first round, beat Dick Bourgeois' Javelin. But in the second round, he had engine problems and shut off against Kenney Goodell. On January 10, he was at Lions for the AHRA Grand American race. He qualified with a 7.32, but a 7.35/195.66 in the first round, lost to Larry Arnold's 7.12. Don barely made the show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals; his 7.306/208.81 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. He lost to Rich Siroonian in the first round, 7.03/205 to 7.67/184. He did considerably better at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. During qualifying, he was credited with a (play with my clocks) 6.56/204.54. It was a 32-car show, and in the first round, Don got a solo and ran 7.18/204.08. He beat Ronnie Runyan's Chevy-powered Vega in round two, but in the third round, his 7.01/198.22 lost to Mart Higginbotham's 6.90/204. Don qualified #1 at the NHRA Springnationals in Dallas at 6.787/214.28. He beat Tom McEwen in round one, 6.02/205.21 to a fouling 6.96/207. In round two, he got some Winternational revenge on Rich Siroonian, 6.78/210.77 to 6.87/216. Don continued rolling on in the semis, his 6.80/210 defeating Sush Matsubara's 6.96/216. In the final, Schumacher set Low ET of the Meet at 6.76/218.44 to defeat Kelly Brown's 6.81. |

Notes: Don Schumacher yellow Cuda. Car 1 of 3 car team. Don ran really well in '72. His season started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until round two, where he got out of shape and clicked it off in a loss to Gene Snow. His next stop was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.89, but he had problems in the opening round and lost to Roger Lindamood. Schumacher was at Lakeland early in March for the IHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #5 with a 6.91. He beat Paul Aray's Maverick in the first round, with a 7.14, but in round two, the 'Cuda broke a rear-end giving eventual winner Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max" a solo into the semifinals. The following week (March 12) found the team at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, the gremlins persisted, and he broke in the first round, against Henry Harrison, who was driving Mickey Thompson's Vega. It was then off to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Don's 6.80 qualified #5 and a first-round 6.79/196 beat Lindamood. In the second round, he smoked the tires to a 7.09/161 loss to Pat Foster's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.52/225 in the Barry Setzer Vega. Another round two loss came at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, where he lost to Dale Pulde driving Mickey Thompson's Pinto. The trend continued at Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals. He only qualified #13 with a 7.41. Schumacher stopped a blower-popping Charlie Therwhanger in the first round, but his off-pace 7.72 in round two lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.90. At the NHRA Springnationals, it was more of the same. A 6.80 qualified #4, and he beat Al Marshall in the "Tyrant" in the opening round with a 6.88/198, but as usual, a second-round 7.16/168 lost to Butch Maas' 6.74/203. Finally, the following week (June 18), he won at Bristol. Traction wasn't great as 26 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and none got into the "sixes." Don's 7.24 qualified #4, and he picked up to 7.09/211.76 in the first round, to beat Fritz Callier in the "CKC" Vega. It was probably a relief when he beat Dave Mudrack driving the "Warhorse" in round two with a 7.12/204.54. He cracked the "sixes" in the semifinals with a 6.99/214.28 over Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car. But final round opponent Jim Paoli driving the "Ramchargers" car, had run a 6.97 in his semifinal race, so it was close. Sure enough, the two had a good race down to the wire with the "Shoe's" 7.01/206.42 getting the victory over the "Rams'" 7.07/215. A few days later, he won over an eight-car field at Union Grove, where he set both ends of the track record with a 6.47/227 (I hope I got this right as reporters often saw Schumacher's name on the side of the car and assumed that it was him. Bobby Rowe liked to drive it out the back door, but the report claimed it was Schumacher). Another win followed this one at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Don qualified #5 with a 6.64 and an improved 6.57 beat the "Ramchargers" car, which Clare Sanders was now driving. In round two, Ron Potter fouled against him, and in the semifinals, he beat 1972's "killer car," the "Trojan Horse" driven by Larry Fullerton. In the first two rounds, the car had just run 6.40/228 and 6.56/225. But Larry's off-pace 7.37/212 lost to Don's 6.63/214.79. In the final, he faced another "killer car" of the '72 season, the Demon of Ed McCulloch. Ed "slowed" to a 6.84/217 in the final after earlier running as quick as 6.51, and Schumacher picked up the win with a 6.63/213.76. The following weekend (July 22), he was at Martin Michigan for an eight-car show. McCulloch got a bit of payback there as he beat Schumacher in the first round. The next day they were at Rockford for the Manufacturer's Meet. Don had run some good times, such as 6.72 (over Fullerton) and 6.78 (over Tommy Grove), and the final came down to McCulloch and him. Once again, McCulloch got the measure of Don with a 6.87/217 beating his 7.01/215.82. Don ran 6.657/219.51 at the Tulsa PRA race. Formerly listed 220.00 for Don's best speed, if it turns out that the Union Grove 227 was Rowe. |

Notes: Don Schumacher's red Cuda, one of a three-car team. We need to confirm that Don drove this car in addition to the yellow car. 356 is Don Schumacher's number. | I believe this red car was driven by Raymond Beadle. All of the pictures I've seen of the red car are with Beadle driving. It appears in this photo that there was some repair work done where the Comp number usually. Also the red car was the only one of the three to use the canard wings over the rear tires. As best as I know, Beadle (#426) drove the red car, Bobby Rowe (#202) drove the blue car and Don (#356) drove the yellow car. I have seen Don as identified as the driver of the blue car on a few occasions, but never the red car. - MO |

Notes: Won 1973 Winternationals and was runner-up at Gatornationals with a 230.76 national mph record. Ran this car until the Wonder Wagons. Yellow Wonder Wagon debuted at Indy 1973. Where were the white Wonder Wagon panel wagons raced? The Video link shows Don racing this car against Paula Murphy at Santa Pod 1973. Gainesville 3/73 record stood for three years! Coke event promo poster from US 30 cited 6.33/228, but there was no way to know which of the three Cudas ran at that event. | Don had a great early season. It started at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. Seventy-five cars showed for the 32-car nitro Funny Car field. Schumacher qualified #8 with a 6.61/208.81. In the first round, his 6.58/208.33 beat Mike Van Sant's off-pace 7.54 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. A second-round 6.57/214.38 defeated Dale Pulde's 6.83/200 in the "Lil Demon," He continued to improve in round three, where his 6.46/218.44 stopped Dave Uyehara, who broke a rear end in Larry Huff's car. Richard Tharp had his "Blue Max" go up in flames against him in the semifinals, while Don reset the AHRA ET record with his 6.42 at only 196. He faced "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final and won with a 6.44 (Low ET) at 220.04, while Liberman smoked the tires in his runner-up effort. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where 58 cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Traction was horrible as the low qualifier was in at 7.18. Don qualified #14 with a 7.65/206.89 and then ran 7.64 over alternate Ron O'Donnell. In round two, his 7.43/210 beat Tom Hoover's 7.59/207. He improved a bunch in the semifinals, where his 7.26/218.44 stopped Jim Murphy's close 7.28/210. He met future superstar Kenny Bernstein driving Ray Alley's Charger in the final, and Schumacher's 7.18/220.58 rn (Low ET and Top Speed) prevailed for his fifth NHRA National event title. At the IHRA Winternationals at Lakeland, Don's 7.02 qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field. A 7.00/207 in round one beat Gary Henderson's 7.18/173 in the "Super Duster," but his second round 7.09/211 lost to Harlan Thompson's 6.93/205 in the "Tom and Jerry" Mustang. The wins continued at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He beat Art Ward in the first round with a 6.58/197.80. He had an easy run in round two and the semifinals, where Leroy Chadderton, driving the "Hawaiian," lost fire. He met up with Liberman again in the finals, and his 6.55/215.82 scored the win over JJ's 6.81/216. The following week (March 18), he almost won the NHRA Gatornationals. He set Low ET at 6.34/228.42 in qualifying #1 and made his way to the final by running 6.48/230.76 (not Top Speed, but a new national record) over Roger Lindamood, another 6.34 at 226.70 over Leroy Goldstein's 6.61 in the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda and a 6.54 single in the semifinals when Ed McCulloch was unable to show. He faced Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer Vega in the final, and it was a good race, but Foster took the victory with a 6.37/221 over Schumacher's 6.41/233.16 (just short of being backed up for the record)! The winning didn't come quite so easy after that. He was at Miami for a sixteen-car Funny Car show that had him qualify #7 with a 7.25/187.11. He soloed in round one when Paul Smith was shut off on the line with a fuel leak, but his 6.94/199.11 lost to Al Marshall's 6.80/220 in round two. Don won his third consecutive AHRA race when he beat Hoover with a 6.73 in the final at the rain-delayed Tulsa Grand American Race on April 11. His streak ended at the AHRA Green Valley race when he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the semifinals. Shortly after that (May 24), Schumacher was at Dragway 42 for the next AHRA Grand American race. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.53. In round one, he got the "odd-lot" solo and ran 6.90/199.55 to advance. But in round two, his 7.15/211.76 fell to Gene Snow's 6.67/220. He also set Low ET in qualifying at the AHRA Springnationals held in Denver, where his 6.54 was almost two-tenths ahead of the second qualifier. A 6.76 in the opening round defeated Tom McEwen, but his car was shut off on the line for an oil leak in round two, and Don had to watch as Art Ward soloed into the semifinal. A week later, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He debuted his new Wonder Bread sponsor at its first national event. His 6.72 qualified #4, and his 6.79 beat alternate Dick Rosberg in the "Fighting Irish" Satellite in round one. In round two, his off-pace 7.32/191.08 lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.84/211. On July 4, he competed at Englishtown's Funny Car Spectacular event. Fourteen cars were there, and all ran the first round, with the four Low ET cars advancing into the semifinal. Don ran 6.93/199.55 to beat Al Bergler's out-of-shape Vega. Unfortunately, his ET did not advance into the final four. He came back out later for a consolation race with Fred Goeske that saw his 6.76/200.89 lose to Fred's 6.80/215. He was back at Englishtown on July 15 for the NHRA Summernationals. He "only" qualified #15 with a 6.62, and he smoked the tires to a 10.58 loss against McEwen's 6.87 in the first round. At the end of the month (July 29), he was at Rockford for its Manufacturer's Meet. He did not have a good day. In his first race, his 6.80 lost to Bill Leavitt's 6.79, and in his second race, Pulde's 6.75 in the M/T Grand Am beat his quicker 6.66. The car broke, and was unable to run round three. Schumacher then went to Atco for its World Funny Car Championships. This was an eight-car show, and he lost to Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer Vega in the first round. He came back out later for a consolation race and set Low ET and 6.56. |

Notes: Don started the season by qualifying #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.46/214.28. In the first round, an off pace 6.76/212.76 lost to John Collins' 6.51/198. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #3 on Saturday with a 6.57, but he had the Vega body come off the chassis and crash down onto the track. It broke into two pieces just behind the rear wheel well. Don and his crew repaired the body in time for eliminations on Sunday. He beat Harry Hudson, Al Segrini, and Al Bergler on his way to the final to meet Don Prudhomme. In the final, his 6.74 lost to the "Snake's" 6.38. Schumacher was running strong at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.39/225.00 and another 6.39 at 218.97 beat Leroy Goldstein's 6.69 in the first round. Unfortunately, he lost fire in the second round, giving eventual winner Tom McEwen a single into the semifinals. On April 6, he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the first round, he beat Mert Littlefield with a 6.73/212.76. In round two, a 6.89/192.71 beat Gene Snow's 6.92/208. But in the semifinals, Jim Dunn's 6.83/205 beat his 6.92/209.30. He was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships in April. It was a 32-car show, and Don's 6.86 in the first round beat Ron Williams' Pinto, but an off-pace 7.17 in the second round lost to Bob Pickett's 6.75 in the "Lil Demon." He qualified #2 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.43/225.00 (Top Speed). Schumacher was upset in the first round, where his 6.93/215.82 lost to eventual winner Snow's 6.67/205. Don's best NHRA times were 6.320 at Englishtown and 231.36 at Indy. |
