Notes: Segrini was driving Kosty's car from at least March through June 1973. He was at Lakeland on March 4 for the IHRA Winternationals. Al qualified #11, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.13/193.53 lost to eventual winner Pat Foster's 6.83/205 in the Barry Setzer Vega. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.58/225.00 qualified #11. The car lost fire on the line in the first round, advancing Ed McCulloch. Al was at Englishtown in April for an eight-car show. A first-round 6.68/219.51 beat Tom Prock's 7.08/181 in the "Custom Body" car, but he had trouble keeping the front wheels on the ground in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. He was really running well at the second NHRA Division 3 race at National Trail. He only qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but his 6.76 in the first round, beat #2 qualifier Dale Emery driving the "Jeg's" Camaro. That time was good enough for Low ET, but he stepped it up even further in the semifinals when he tied the track ET record with a 6.65 at 218.97 (Top Speed) while beating Bill Leavitt. Unfortunately, he had troubles in the final and lost to Russell Long, driving Charlie Proite's Charger. Al was at Connecticut for its 13th annual Memorial Day Championships. He set Low ET at 6.60 and finished runner-up to Leavitt. He failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals (times not reported). The following weekend (June 17), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he reached the second round before he lost to Al Hanna in the "Eastern Raider." On July 4, he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. He won his first-round race but lost to Clare Sanders driving the "Ramchargers" car in the semifinals. |

Notes: Woody Gilmore chassis and Don Kirby body. The 6.44 was a Maple Grove track record set in June. Ran 6.57 at Gainesville, 6.67 at Columbus, 6.60 at Englishtown. Al debuted the "Black Magic" Vega at the NHRA Gatornationals in March. It created quite a stir as it was awarded the "Best Appearing Car" and the crew was awarded "Best Appearing Crew." The car could run as well as Segrini proved when he ran 6.77 to qualify #7. He improved to 6.56 in his first-round win over Gene Snow, but in the second round against Don Schumacher, the car went into a wheelstand and Al shut off. He was at Charlotte Speedway on March 31 for the IHRA Southern Nationals. Al qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show on the 1/8 mile track with a 5.05. He set Low ET with a 4.41/163.93 to win in the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Kenny Safford driving the "Mr. Norm" car in the semifinals. He was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he qualified #2 with a 6.69/201.34 behind Ron Colson's 6.62/214.79 in the "Chi-Town Hustler.†Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He did reach the final at Englishtown's Super Sunday race in May, but he lost to Raymond Beadle. At the NHRA Springnationals, he just made the show qualifying in the #15 spot. He advanced past round one when Leroy Goldstein shut off in the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. A second round 6.67/209.79 lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.56/207. The following week (June 16), Segrini was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. There, he qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.56. He soloed to a 6.48/216.34 in round one, when Frank Oglesby was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. In the second round, his 6.45/221.13 covered Bob Parmer's 6.59/219. He picked up to 6.38 in the semifinals to beat Bill Leavitt. This put him into the final against Billy Meyer. A final round 6.43/228.42 (Top Speed and a new track record) finished runner-up to Meyer's 6.34/223. He then won the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove on June 22. Al qualified #2 in the eight-car show behind Ivanof. He beat Tom Prock in round one, with a 6.54, and he advanced easily in the semifinals. His final round opponent was Jimmy King in the "King and Marshall" Satellite. Segrini set Low ET with a track record 6.44 at 221.67 (Top Speed) in the final to win over King's 6.62/201. |

Notes: Al kicked off the season at NHRA Pomona but did not make the show, running a best of 6.89/205.01. He showed up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals and barely made the show, qualifying on the "bump" at 6.614/215.31. A 6.77/211.26 in the first round, lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.66/200. Early in May, he was at Maple Grove for its annual Dutch Classic. It was an eight-car field, and in the opening round, his 6.94/156.25 beat a wheelstanding Bill Leavitt. In the semifinals, his 6.64/162.45 lost to the event's eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Shortly after that, Al won the Memorial Day Classic race at Englishtown. In the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.47/205.47 that beat Pee Wee Wallace's 6.83/217. In the semifinals, a 6.54/189.07 beat a troubled Leavitt at 8.10. In the final, he faced Ivanof. Kosty had to shut off due to a leaky fuel tank. Al soloed for the victory with a 15.32/42.11. He won the CARS Magazine Championships at Atco over an eight-car field. Al set Low ET at 6.44 at 197.36 in a first-round win over Ivanof's 7.27/191. In the semifinals, a 6.55/200.00 advanced over Leavitt's broken Mustang II. In the finals, all he needed was a 16.21/38.31 for the victory when final-round opponent Jim Liberman shut off with no oil pressure. At the NHRA Springnationals, Al's 6.59/208.33 qualified #14. In the first round, his 6.68/201.79 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.45/211. Shortly after that, he was at New England for a twelve-car show that saw all cars make three runs, with the two Low ET cars advancing into the final. Al’s best of 6.65/191 failed to make the final. Cayuga held a race with the same format in July. Al shut off with problems in his first race against Larry Fullerton. In his second race, a 7.01/187.11 beat Joe Jacono's 7.05/195, and in his third race, he broke against Harlan Thompson. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Summernationals (#2 alternate at 6.70/205.47) but was runner-up to Leavitt at the Connecticut Summer Funny Car Championships. His final round 6.63/209.30 lost to Bill's 6.49/215. In August, he was at New England Dragway for the Epping Grand American. Segrini set Top Speed in the first round, while beating Larry Fullerton with a 6.57/215.31. In the semifinals of the eight-car show, he advanced with a 6.82/189.87 went Ivanof broke a rear end. In the final, he stopped Arne Swensen's 7.11 with a 6.62/203.16. Segrini also won the Maple Grove Back to School race in September. It was another eight-car show, and Al ran 6.73/222.22 (Top Speed) and 6.59/213.77 to reach the final. Once again, he raced Swensen in the final, and once again, he was victorious with a 6.56/220.58, beating Arne's 6.74/213. Englishtown was Al's final NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Al was the 8th alternate at NHRA Englishtown. Times were unknown, but not faster than the fifth alternate at 6.789. He was driving this car at Atco in August for its FC Nationals. He beat Bill Leavitt in the first round with a 6.56. Shortly after that, he was at Cayuga for the Coca-Cola FC Championships. It was an eight-car show, and the "Highland Bandit" had troubles in the first round and lost to Harland Thompson. New England held its seventh annual Grande American race. Sixteen cars ran in the first round, with the four quickest cars advancing into the semi-final. Al's 7.79/173 beat an ailing Gary Burgin, but his time was not good enough to advance to the final four. In September, he also raced this car at Union Grove in the PRO National Challenge. He qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field but lost early. Not long after that, he was at Maple Grove for its Back to School FC Spectacular. It was an eight-car field, and the "Highland Bandit" broke in the first round against Roy Harris. He was back at Maple Grove in October for its FC Grande Finale. Once again, the car broke in the opening round; this time, it was the magneto, but his opponent, Arne Swensen, got to solo into the semi-final. Al won the Epping funny car show in October 1976 on a holeshot over the Cassidy Bros. Monza, 6.38/215 to 6.28/189. In November, his next stop was at Gainesville for the Turkey Trot National Open. His 6.92/208.81 qualified second to Paul Smith's 6.79/205. Al improved to 6.55/220.04 in round one to defeat Cassidy. Another 6.92 at 191.89 in the semi-final beat Shirl Greer. He faced Ray Sherman in the final, and Segrini fouled away a 7.30/193.13 while Sherman got the victory with a 7.22/223. He was at DeSoto Memorial Raceway for the Snowbird National Open the following week. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 7.11/208.81. In the opening round, he faced low qualifier Smith, and Al's 6.75/209.30 lost to Paul's 6.73/194. NOTE: Al does not think he ran this well in this car. He said he only ran it three times. We formerly listed a 6.28, but we think that was us mistakenly crediting him with Les Cassidy's time. |

Notes: Al's first NHRA national event of the year was the Englishtown Summernationals. He qualified #12 at 6.350/218.97. Al lost to Billy Meyer in round one, 6.78/214 to 12.76. He qualified #6 at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals with a 6.47/221.13. An opening round 6.50/217.91 lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover's 6.35/224. Al qualified #16 at NHRA Indy with a 6.234/232.55. He beat Dale Pulde in round one, 6.398/225.00 to 6.56/225. He fouled against Richard Rogers in round two and lost, 9.24/84 to Al's wasted 6.712/213. In mid-October, he was at Lakeland for a best-of-three match against Shirl Greer. He won the first race by default when Greer broke. Notes: From the state that probably boasted more funny cars per capita than any other, Rhode Island, came the "Rapid Transit" Satellite of the Hill Bros. Following a bad blown AA/Gas Willys in the late 60s, Pete and Bill Hill built their first Rapid Transit funny car in 1970 in the form of a Cuda. A newer Tropeano-built "Hill Bros" Cuda followed in 71, which was unique in that it actually had working headlights! Brothers were northeast regulars throughout the 70s with their Plymouth bodied entries; took 77 off due to business commitments, reemerged with the pictured car for the 78 season. - Info from 70's Funny Car website |

Notes: Al Segrini debuted Phil Castronovo's new Arrow on June 21 at Englishtown during the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. Things didn't go so well as the car broke on its burnout preparing to race Gary Burgin. He was at Empire Dragway in July for the NED Gold Cup Championships race. It was an eight-car field and his opening round 6.91/174 lost to Roy Harris's 6.71/221. He was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where his 6.190/231.95 qualified #10. Segrini beat Billy Meyer in the first round, before losing to eventual winner Denny Savage in round two. | Also ran 6.21/227.84 at Englishtown on 7/16/78. The 6.19/231.95 were Al's best NHRA times of the 1978 season. |

Notes: Al was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals in March. He qualified on the "bump" with a 6.45. His opponent, Kenny Bernstein, got out of shape in the first round, and Segrini advanced. Unfortunately, Al's engine was ailing, and he could not run eventual winner Gordie Bonin in round two. He won the New England Spring Funny Car Championships in May, running a best of 6.05/231. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #1 with a 6.127 (Low ET) at 234.37. A first-round 6.16/230.76 beat Bonin's 6.58/187. He continued to run well in round two, with his 6.20/226.70 beating Don Prudhomme's 6.31/222. He had a small fire on the line in the semifinals and had to shut down, advancing eventual winner Gary Burgin. Englishtown was a stop that he would rather forget. He was there for the NHRA Summernationals. He had made a qualifying pass and stopped the car. He attempted to shut the engine down, but it wouldn't shut off. Oil got onto the headers, and the car caught fire. Al bailed out, and the car started idling down the track on fire. No worry, the concrete retaining wall was easily able to stop this flaming mess. It did. The car was then rebuilt and stolen the day after. Not sure if it was recovered, but Segrini was driving for Castronovo at the NHRA Grandnationals. Segrini qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.21/229.59. An opening round 6.19 beat Bernstein's 6.25, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires to a losing 6.86 while Dale Pulde's 6.72 in the "War Eagle" advanced into the final. He won the fourth NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove. Al set Low ET at 6.15 and a troubled 7.22/189.87 in the final beat an even more troubled Roy Harris at 9.50-78. Segrini went to Indy with high hopes for running well at the NHRA US Nationals. But he made a dozen passes attempting to qualify, with the best being a 6.14/234.98 (second alternate). The problem was traced to two bad fuel pumps. Shortly after this, he won the New England Funny Car Nationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.00/238.71 and a 6.11/235 beat Bruce Larson in the final. He scored another big win at the IHRA Nationals at the end of September. There, he stopped Burgin in the final. His next stop was at Atco for their Funny Car Spectacular. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, Segrini beat R.C. Sherman with a 6.45/217.39. But in the semifinals, he shut down to 9.77/84.58 in a loss to Harris' 6.71/212. AKA Utica Flash. Al ran 6.127/234.98 for best NHRA national event times. |

Notes: Former Detroit Tiger car. Segrini debuted his new "Faberge" sponsored Arrow at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #13, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.40/223.32 beat a wheelstanding Dale Armstrong. In round two, his 6.35/191.89 lost to the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 5.94/234. The following week (March 23), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. This was only an eight-car field, and his 6.52/218 qualified #7. He lost to Billy Meyer in round one. In April, Segrini competed at Englishtown's Spring Funny Car Bonanza race. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, Al's 6.62/211.76 beat Chuck Etchells but a semifinal 6.35/212.76 lost to Rick Johnson's stout 6.01/235 in the "Custom Body" car. On May 10, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. There were six cars on hand, and all were to make two passes, with the two Low ET cars advancing into the final. Al ran 6.48/205.47 to beat a crossed-up Johnson in his first race and a 6.32/212.76 beat a fireballing Roy Harris in his second race. Unfortunately, his times were not good enough to transfer into the final. Al qualified #14 for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.26/231.55. He beat Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" in the first round, and in round two, he beat Gary Burgin, but a 6.22/231.36 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.16/233 in the semifinals. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.61/212.76. He overpowered the track in the first round, and smoked the tires to lose Armstrong's 6.10. A week later (August 17), Segrini was at New England for the NHRA Division 1 final. His 6.27/232.55 qualified #7 for the eight-car show, and he improved to 6.24/229.00 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough to get around Al Hanna's 6.17/227. |

Notes: Al started the year with a non-qualifying effort at the NHRA Winternationals (times not reported). Things went much better at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #7 with a 6.039/231.95. Unfortunately, he slowed to a 6.306/226.70 in the first round, and lost to Fuzz Miller's 6.06/238. Atlanta had only eight-car fields in the PRO categories for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Segrini got in on the "bump" with a 6.165. He lost to Shirl Greer driving Larry Coogle's "Sting" in the first round, when Al shut off to a 10-second run. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where only eight cars showed for the eight-car field. Al qualified #3 with a 6.09, and a 6.15 in round one, beat Dick Rosberg. He fell off to a 6.42 in the semifinals and lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.22 in the "Blue Max." He qualified #3 again at the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.07. He beat Dale Armstrong in the first round, with a 6.27, but in the semifinals, the car locked up in reverse, and he could not run Beadle. More highlights of '81 included a three straight match race victory over Bruce Larson at New England. Al ran times of 6.25/224.43, 6.10/231.95, and 6.15/231.95 to beat Bruce, who had a best of 6.24/223. Ten cars ran the first-round at Englishtown's Night of Thrills, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Segrini made that final by running 6.27/229.01 to beat Gary Burgin. In the final, he faced Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler" car. Al tried hard, but his 6.39/228.42 finished runner-up to Hawley's 6.18/230. Another runner-up finish to Hawley came at the Funny Cars under the Stars event in New England. This time Al's 6.21/222 finished second best to the "Chi-Town's" 6.08/224. Segrini was not pleased with the NHRA Springnationals, where he could only run a best of 6.382/224.99. That was good for the fourth alternate. He did not attend the NHRA Mile-High Nationals in Denver, but he was back on the NHRA tour for the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #13 with a 6.200/233.16. But Hawley seemed to have his number as he stopped Segrini in the first round, 6.17/229 to a 15-second shutoff. Atlanta held a four-car show in July, and Al was the winner. He beat Greer in his first race with a 6.31/228, and in the final, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.15/230.76 that beat Dale Pulde. On July 26, he was back in Atlanta for the NHRA Eastern Regional. A 6.28/225.57 qualified #3, and a 6.16/226.70 in the first round, beat a tire-smoking Greer. He lost a close one to Tom Anderson in the semifinals, where Al's 6.20/226.70 lost to Anderson's 6.19/229. Lebanon Valley held an Funny Car show, and Segrini was there. He was having a bit of a rough time. He fouled against Rick Johnson in his first race, and in his second, he had difficulties and slowed to 11.72/86.12 that lost to Pulde. He finally got a good run in on his third race, where a 6.27/223.32 beat Dominic Santucci. On August 2, Al was back at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. His 6.22/236 qualified #4 for the eight-car show, but he lost in a tire-smoking battle to Al Baldwin in the first round, of eliminations. The NHRA Grandnationals was also just an eight-car field, and this time Al didn't make it. His 6.350/228.42 was the second alternate for the show. Englishtown hosted its Race of Champions race soon after that. The race featured eight cars, each making two passes, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Al's ET's did not get him into the final, but he ran well. First, he beat Beadle's 6.62/163 with a 6.37/225.56 and then defeated a motor-blowing Al Hofmann with a 6.38/230.77. He was back at Englishtown a while later for the US All-Pro Championships. He ran really well there, running times of 6.19, 6.13, and 6.20 with a best speed of 234. He won the race over Gary Burgin, who lost a blower belt in the final. Al ran his best numbers of the year at NHRA Indy with a 6.032/240.00 qualifying #11. He beat broken Craig Epperly in round one, with a 6.110/234.37. in round two, he lost a close one to John Pott, 6.22/232 to 6.259/230.76. Al qualified #13 at Fremont with a 6.112/230.17. He beat Rob Williams on a holeshot in round one, 6.09/234.98 to 6.08/234.98, but Gary Burgin got to him in round two, 6.15/232 to 2.24/233.76. Al was the first alternate at the OCIR World Finals at 6.205/228.42, but he got in. Unfortunately, he shut off against Dale Armstrong in round one, whose 5.93/230 would have been tough to beat. |

Notes: Segrini started the season the right way by winning the NHRA Winternationals. Crew chief Bill Schultz tuned the car to a 6.04/244.56 to qualify #8. A 6.24/230.76 beat Tom Ridings' 6.26/233 in the first round, while in round two, his 6.30/233.16 beat Gary Burgin's quicker 6.29/227. In the semifinals, he beat Doc Halladay's off-pace 7.92 with a 6.21/239.36. This put him in the final against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle was favored due to his times, as he had run 5.97, 6.02, and another 5.97 en route to the final. But in the final, the "Max" slowed to a 6.32/226 that lost to Segrini's 6.26/238.09. Al got to Beadle again at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals, in March. Al qualified #9 with a 6.11/243.24 that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Beadle. In their first-round race, Raymond got out of shape and hit the guardrail. The impact flipped the car onto its roof. He was OK, but while all eyes were on the "Blue Max," Al was motoring to the first-round win with a 6.18/223.32. Unfortunately, he lost to Paul Smith in round two. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show at the Bakersfield March Meet with his 6.40/224.43 falling short of the 6.35 "bump." At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he lost to eventual winner Dale Pulde in the first round. He competed at Atlanta's Spring Funny Car race in April but failed to reach the finals. Al was back at Atlanta on April 25 for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he was the third alternate with a best of 6.18/231.95 for the eight-car show. He was at Rockingham on May 2 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #2 with a 5.97 behind Beadle's track record 5.86. Al beat Burgin in the first round, before losing to Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Segrini qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.19/237.46. But in round one, the car broke, advancing eventual winner Beadle. He ran really well at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.10/243.90 qualified #11. In the first round, he faced Beadle, who qualified with a 5.98. But the "Blue Max" smoked all eight pistons while Segrini advanced with a 6.16/238.09. He beat Dale Pulde in round two, and a 6.27/236.84 got around Bernstein's 6.32/223 in the semifinals. This set up a final-round meeting with Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler.†The final wasn't even close, as Segrini slowed to 6.42/217.39 while Hawley got the victory with a 6.07/233. The following week (June 20), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 5.95 qualified #3. Al lost to Pulde in the first round. He also lost in the first round, at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.18/225.00. There Tim Grose beat him. Segrini made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #3 for the eight-car show with a 6.03/235.60. Al's best NHRA times were 5.910 at Brainerd and 245.23 (5.915) at Indy. He scored two runner-ups in addition to the Pomona win. Al jumped into the Joe Pisano car at the 1982 OCIR Manufacturers Meet. |

At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.98/239.36 but lost to John Force in the first round. Atlanta held an eight-car show near the end of March, and Al qualified #1 with a 5.95 (Low ET) at 237.46. A 6.03/233 in the first round, beat Ron Correnti, and he got past the semifinals to meet Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car for the title. Al got the victory. He was back in Atlanta on April 17 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and Segrini qualified #7 with a 5.96/243.90. He made his way into the final by beating Tom McEwen and John Lombardo. There he was to face Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Al ran a good 6.07/214.28, but he lost to Hawley's better 5.99/240. The next NHRA race was the Cajun Nationals held at Baton Rouge. It was another eight-car show, and Al ran 6.04/238.84 to qualify #6. An opening round 6.07/240.00 took out McEwen's 6.11/234, and in the semifinal, a 6.00/241.28 stopped Kenny Bernstein at 6.26/226. He went up against Oswald in the final, and Segrini had things in hand as his 6.11/243.90 got the victory over Mark's 6.17/241. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #7 in the eight-car show. Unfortunately, the car broke on his burnout in the first round, giving his opponent, Raymond Beadle, in the "Blue Max," a free ride into the semifinal. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.97/239.36 qualified #5. In round one, Al's 6.03/241.28 beat Lombardo's 6.10/236. But he had trouble in round two and shut down against eventual winner Beadle. He made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.08 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show. In the opening round of eliminations, he lost to Hawley, who ran a controversial 5.71. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Segrini qualified #5 there with a 5.94/246.57. In round one, he ran 5.96/247.93 to beat Dale Pulde's 6.16, but a 6.11/243 in round two lost to Oswald's 5.92/249. He did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His first-round 5.91/234.98 beat Dominic Santucci, but he was shut off on the line in round two with an oil leak. That advanced Prudhomme to the semifinals with a solo. The best times were 5.870 at the World Finals and 250.69 at Indy. |

Notes: Al started the season by qualifying #3 at the NHRA Winternationals at 5.862/255.68. His speed was a new Pomona track record. He went on to win the race by first beating a blower popping John Collins with a 5.904/246.57 and then running 5.929/250.69 over a tire-smoking John Lombardo. In the semifinals, both he and John Force were on and off the load pedal in a tire-smoking contest that saw the "Super Brut" come out on top, 6.507/229.59 to 6.72/242. In the final, he ran Tim Grose. It was a good race, and Segrini won with a 5.967/234.98 over Tim's 6.03/247. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.881/248.61 qualified #7. He advanced past the first-round with a 12.81/56.07 when opponent Dale Pulde broke. He lost to Billy Meyer in the second round, 6.17/226 to a 9.73. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #9 with a 6.09. Unfortunately, he lost early. NHRA's next event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, and Al qualified #8 at 5.903/250.69. He beat a coasting Mike Dunn in round one, 5.900/246.57, but lost to Grose in an incredible second-round matchup, 5.945/243 to 5.945 (no speed). Grose's .542 to .557 starting line advantage made the difference. Al qualified #15 at NHRA's Cajun Nationals at 6.118/239.36 and surprised Raymond Beadle in round one, 6.200/220.58 to 9.29. Al lost to Jim Head in round two. Head got no times but finished ahead of Al's 7.71/250.69. Strange! Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. He ran well, but he lost to Denny Savage in round two. Things didn't go so well at the NHRA Springnationals, where his best of 6.025/247.93 failed to qualify (first alternate). He did better at the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #13 in a short 14-car field at 6.252/232.88, but he lost to Dale Pulde in round one, 5.94/233 to 6.053/236.84. Segrini qualified on the "bump" at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals at 6.043/247.93, but another first-round loss came at the hands of Mike Dunn, 5.88/250 to 5.990/246.57. Al qualified #12 at 6.009/242.58. In round one, he lost to Pulde, 5.93/249 to a 13-second shutoff. Al's 5.874/250.69 grabbed the #10 slot at Indy, but again he lost a close one in round one, to Ed McCulloch, 5.86/248 to 5.885/244.56. That was Al's last NHRA national event in the Super Brut car. Notes: Al started the '85 season by qualifying #10 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.86/245.23. A first-round 5.82 beat Tim Grose's quicker 5.78. He beat Tom McEwen's 5.95 with a 5.94 in round two, and in the semifinals, a strong 5.79/253 beat Rick Johnson's 5.92/249 in the "Hawaiian." In the final, he faced Dale Pulde. Al ran his best time of the meet, a 5.78/227.96, to win over Pulde's 6.02/233. At the Gatornationals, Al qualified #8 with a 5.78/257.43. He slowed to a 6.16/203.16 in the first round, that lost to McEwen's 5.94/246. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Segrini ran 5.90/251.25 to qualify #6. He lost to John Collins in the first round. In May, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but he lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #14 with a 5.99/242.58 but lost when he smoked the tires against Mark Oswald. | Purchased from Lombardo, who ran it at the '84 Finals (JP-1 initial testing?) to a tire- hazing 6.12 best on Saturday, not sure if that was his event best. A Venolia ad in ND after the Winternationals stated that the JP 1 had been tested beforehand. - Joe Moore |
