Notes: AKA The Kid From NYC. Shafiroff had his new Vega at Englishtown in March for an eight-car show. His check-out pass of 10.56/134.21 qualified #6. He beat Jim Cook in round one, and in the semifinals, he ran 9.65/140.18 to beat Larry Sengstack, who missed a shift. He faced low qualifier Richie Zul in the final, and despite a consistent 9.67/140.18, he finished runner-up to Zul's 9.47/143. On April 15, he was at Cecil County for its National Open event. A 9.55 qualified #5, and that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Paul Blevins. Scott improved to 9.50/144.69 in their race, but it was no match for Blevins" 9.22/147. Scott qualified #16 at Englishtown's 32-car show for the NHRA Summernationals with a 9.33. He lost to Stuart McDade in the opening round, 9.27 to 9.33. He was runner-up to Ronnie Lyles at a Pro Stock race in Connecticut in August. Twenty-four cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, and Scott qualified #6 with a 9.25. He beat Tommy Johnson in the opening round, but a 9.42 in round two lost to Gary Kimball's slower 9.58. Scott also ran well at the Super Stock Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 9.34/147.78, and in round one, his 9.30/147.78 beat Rufus Boyd. A quick-leaving 9.37/145.39 beat Jack Roush's quicker, but later 9.35/148 in round two. But in the semifinals," "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 9.18/148 was too much for his 9.27/147.05. Shortly after that, he was back at Englishtown for an NHRA Pro Stock circuit race. It was an eight-car field, and a 9.37/144.38 beat Richie Zul's close 9.38/144 in the opening round. In the semifinals, opponent John Healy missed a shift, and Scott advanced with a 9.32/146.10. He faced the similar Vega of Bruce Larson in the final, and Bruce ran a strong 9.24/146 to get the victory over Shafiroff's 9.41/145.86 runner-up effort. Scott ran 9.344/145.63 at the Indy Nationals.

Notes: Ran 8.97 at Maple Grove, 9.13 at Pomona, 9.083, 9.20 at Columbus, 9.17 at Englishtown, 9.12 at Indy. | Scott had one of the strongest Pro Stock Vegas in '74. At Pomona, he had one of the three Vegas that qualified. His 9.19/149.50 put him in the #12 spot for the show. In the first round, he beat Ken Dondero's 9.31/148 in Don Nicholson's second Pinto with a 9.18/150.75. He beat "Dyno" himself in round two, where his 9.13/149.25 stopped Nicholson's 9.24/146. In the semifinals, he came up against his third straight Pinto of eliminations. This one was the "Gapp and Roush" car with Wayne Gapp behind the wheel. Scott fell off to 9.22/144.92, and it wasn't enough to beat Gapp's 9.00/150. At the NHRA Gatornationals, it was the "Gapp and Roush" team that stopped Scott again. This time, it was Jack Roush behind the wheel when the two met in the second round. Jack's 8.97/152 put the little Vega's 9.083/149.50 on the trailer. That was Scott's best NHRA national event ET for the year. He won the Cecil National Open with a final round 9.04 over Frank Iaconio. Shafiroff was back at Cecil County in April for the Spring Pro Stock Championships, and while he didn't win, he did run a strong 9.03/151.54 in the first round. On May 5, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA Grand American Nationals. He was the quickest Chevy qualifier with a 9.02 (#3), but he lost early. Another win came on May 11 at Maple Grove's Dutch Classic. He qualified #1 and then beat Al Joniec in round one, with a 9.03/149.50. In the semifinals, he dropped into the eights with an 8.98 at only 143.34 to beat Dondero, who was now driving for Bill Jenkins. In the final, he was up against the big-block Camaro of Richie Zul. Scott got the holeshot and held on to win. The following week, Zul got some payback when he beat Shafiroff in the final at the NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga, Ontario. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 9.20/149.50 qualified #6, and he advanced past a broken Sonny Bryant in round one, with a 9.25/148.27. Unfortunately, he fouled against eventual winner Bob Glidden in round two and slowed to 9.61/146.10. He won over a sixteen-car field at Maple Grove's All-American Pro-Series race. Everyone was there. Scott won his first-round race with a 9.12 when Zul had his throttle stick open on his burnout. In the second round, he beat Herb McCandless and, in the semifinals, he got to the finish line first when both he and Gapp ran 9.10. He beat Dick Landy in the final for the title. On June 22, he was back at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division 1 race. Scott qualified #3, but advanced to the final against Zul. Shafiroff's final round 9.15/148.76 lost to Richie's 9.08/149. The next NHRA event was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Scott qualified #13 with a 9.15. In the first round, he faced Jenkins' new driver, Larry Lombardo. Scott was down on power here as his 9.17/148.51 lost to Lombardo's 9.07/150. Like most of the Pro Stock cars that were at Englishtown, Scott made the trip to Maryland International for the second annual Pro Stock Open. He qualified #6 and lasted until round two, where he broke against Glidden. Shortly after that, he was at Cecil County for an eight-car Pro Stock show. In round one, he had a close race against Nicholson that saw his 9.06/150 beat "Dyno's" 9.07/148. In the semifinals, he got a great start and his 9.07/150 beat Zul's quicker 9.02/151. This put him into the final against Gapp. Scott ran another good 9.04, but he lost to Gapp's 8.98. He did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. | We need to confirm the 8.90 best time for 1974.

Notes: Scott won the IHRA Spring Nationals at Bristol with a best of 8.90 at 150.25. Went through eliminations with a cracked block. He defeated Phil Nichols, Wayne Gapp, Lee Edwards, and finally Larry Huff in the final with an 8.99/150.25. Scott ran 8.94 at NHRA Englishtown 1975. He was runner-up to a Don Nicholson holeshot at IHRA Union Grove, 9.01/149.00 to Scott's 8.98/150.50. Runner up at Maryland International Raceway US Pro Stock Open 7/75. | Scott Shafiroff made a huge leap from running a strong Chevy Pro Stock Vega in '74 to switching to this Ford Mustang II for '75. After the season he had, it seemed like he made the right choice. Right off the bat, the car was a contender. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with a 9.00/151.51. An opening round 9.01/150 beat Kenny Hahn's Duster at 9.18/148, but he lost to Bill Jenkins in round two. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he picked up even more on the pack running an 8.90 to qualify #5. But Shafiroff attempted to run an even better number to move up the chart, but the rear end tore out from the car while making his burnout. First alternate Bobby Yowell took his place in the field. After getting the car repaired, Scott ran the Mustang II, which was 50 lbs lighter than NHRA's weight, and ran an impressive 8.70. Scott was anxious to get back into competition. In April, he was at Cecil County's National Open where the car set both Low ET and Top Speed, but broke before eliminations. Things finally clicked his way at the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown. There, he won with a final round of 8.88/153.06. Shafiroff did a lot of match racing with the car and was very successful with it. At the NHRA Springnationals, 34 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Scott's 9.02/151.26 qualified #5. He was late off the line in the first round, and his 9.11/147.29 lost to Warren Johnson's 9.18/148. Shortly after, he won over an eight-car field at Empire Dragway in New York. He set Low ET in the final with a 9.02 over Ronnie Manchester's 9.19. His biggest win of the year came at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. He ran 8.98, 8.99, and 8.99 over a fouling Lee Edwards in the semifinals to reach the final against Larry Huff. Larry knew that Scott was running with a wounded motor, but he also saw that he was still running a tenth faster than his Dodge. So, Huff took a chance on the 'tree and fouled while Scott ran yet another 8.99 at 150 for his first IHRA national event win. He also made it two in a row in IHRA competition when he reached the final at the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove, but his final round 9.01 finished runner-up to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.98 in an all-Ford final. The car kept improving at the NHRA national events, and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Shafiroff's 8.94/153.58 was now up to #3 on the qualifying list. His speed was also tops among the qualifiers. Scott looked strong in eliminations. An opening round 8.96/153.84 advanced when Sam Gianino fouled, and in round two, he beat Charlie Castaldo with an 8.95/154.63. He went up against Jenkins in the semifinals, and the car let him down, breaking on the pass and slowing to a 10.14/99.55 loss against Jenkins' 8.94/152. His next stop was at the US Pro Stock Open held at Budds Creek. Once again, the Mustang II was flying. He ran 8.96, 8.93, and 8.99 in the semifinals over a fouling Richie Zul. His final-round opponent was Roy Hill in his Duster. Roy had not been running quite as well as Scott had, hitting a best of 8.98 in eliminations, but a final round 8.97/151 beat Scott's 8.99/150.25 for the win.
