Notes: Lee Shepherd returned to Pro Stock in 78 after taking 77 off; he raced Modified that year. The Reher-Morrison team really picked up its pace in '78. While the team didn't run the Winter meets, they were at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Lee qualified #11 with an 8.70/157. In the first round, opponent Kevin Rotty had his brakes fail, and he rolled through the lights and fouled. Shepherd advanced with an 8.82/155. In the second round, he fell off to a 9.31/116 loss to Warren Johnson's 8.71/156. Later that month, they really opened some eyes at LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 Opener. Shepherd ran over 160 on three runs, making him the first NHRA legal Pro Stock car to run over 160. His best speed of 160.71 was a new NHRA record. Lee went on to win the race. Then at the next Division 4 race at Green Valley Raceway, the team ran the first NHRA legal 8.4. Shepherd qualified #1 with an 8.48 and then ran 8.53, 8.50, and a final round 8.54 to win that race too. He was runner-up to Johnson at the NHRA Division 5 race at Pueblo Motorsports Park, and on April 30, he was runner-up again, this time to Bob Glidden at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 8.71 in the final lost to Bob's 8.65. The team's next stop was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. Lee qualified #1 in the eight-car field with an 8.80/152.54. A first-round 8.77 (Low ET) at 152.28 beat Shelby Jester, but his transmission let go in round two, and he lost to eventual winner Sonny Bryant. He picked up his third straight Division 4 race when he won at Houston. He set Low ET at 8.74, and a final round 8.79/154.10 (Top Speed) beat Bobby Marriott. The next stop was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Shepherd qualified #2 with an 8.67/159.30 (Top Speed). He beat Jim Feurer in the first round, with an 8.73/152.02. In the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.96 when Jerry Haas lost a wheel on the line. In the final, he faced Jester. It was no contest as Lee won with an 8.69 over Shelby's 9.07. The following week (June 11), they were at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Lee's 8.69/154.90 qualified #3, but he was late off the line in round one, and his 8.83/152.28 lost to Dempsey Hardy's 8.86/153. He won the AHRA Nationals at Alamo Dragway on June 18. An 8.83 (Low ET) at 152 qualified #1 and a first-round 8.84/152 advanced when Marriott fouled against him. In the semifinals, Jester fouled, and Lee's 8.83/153 (Top Speed) moved into the final. There, his 8.86/152 got the win over Jerry Janke. Another win on the AHRA Grand American circuit came at Springfield International on July 4 for the Ozark Nationals. Don Nicholson made a surprise appearance, hoping to stop Shepherd's dominance of the AHRA events. "Dyno" looked good in qualifying, running 8.83 for the pole. Shepherd was back in second with a distant 9.03/144.92. Lee's 8.98/147 advanced when Ken Hilger fouled in the first round. He improved to 8.94/149 in the semifinals to beat Janke's 9.16/143. This set up a final-round showdown with Nicholson. Don had the edge on paper as he had run 8.89 and 8.87 to reach the final. But in the final, Lee ran his best of the weekend, and Don ran his worst. Shepherd's 8.90/150.57 got the victory over "Dyno's" 8.91/152. Janke was Lee's final round victim at Riverside for the fourth NHRA Division 4 race. Lee's final round 8.78/147.81 was too much for Jerry's 8.94/141. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. The team was using a 5-speed transmission at this race. An 8.66/156.79 qualified #3, but Mark Yuill surprised the team in the first round, with an 8.67/157 that beat Lee's 8.76/152.80. Like many other Pro Stock teams, they then went to Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open. It was an eight-car show, and Lee set Low ET and Top Speed in the opening round where his 8.60/155.44 beat Warren Johnson's 8.75 at the same speed. Larry Lombardo gambled on the tree in the semifinal and won as his 8.79 beat Shepherd's quicker 8.67. Shortly after that (July 22), these same two would meet in the final at the fourth NHRA Division 1 race held at Maple Grove. Lee had set Low ET during qualifying at 8.62. He ran 8.76 to beat James Cook in the opening round, and an 8.70/152.54 in the semifinal defeated Frank Iaconio's 8.80/153. Once again, Larry got the jump in the final, and his 8.76/154 nosed out Shepherd's 8.72/153.58 for the victory. Also ran 8.60 and 8.61 at LaPlace, LA. |

Notes: 1978 photo. | This was the calm before the storm. The Reher-Morrison team ran well in '79, but nothing forecast just how well they would do in '80. Driver Lee Shepherd started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.61/157.34. An opening round 8.65/155.97 advanced over a fouling Gordie Rivera, but in round two the Camaro broke and slowed to 9.03 in a loss to Joe Satmary. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Lee's 8.62/156.25 qualified #4. But the team was unable to show for the first-round race against Don Campanello. Shepherd won the NHRA Division 4 race at LaPlace, stopping Shelby Jester in the final. At the rain-delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals, Lee qualified #3 in the eight-car field, and he got a solo run in the first round. In the semifinals, he beat Wally Booth's 8.81 AMC effort with an 8.72/154. This put Shepherd into the finals against Bob Glidden (a forecast of the next two seasons). Shepherd tried hard with an 8.71/155.44, but few could keep up with Glidden in '79 and Bob's 8.56 at a shutting off,149 got the victory. The team then stopped off at St. Louis on June 3 for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Lee reset both ends of the AHRA record during qualifying with an 8.59/159.30. He then ran 8.65 and 8.73 to reach the final. His final round opponent was Bobby Marriott, and Lee's 8.69 defeated Marriott's 8.86 for the victory. A week later (June 10), they were at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.71/154.63 qualified #5. In round one, Shepherd's 8.85/152.02 beat Campanello's 8.87/153, but in round two, an 8.82/153.06 was no match for eventual winner Glidden's 8.66/152. Alamo Dragway was the next stop for the AHRA Nationals. The team dominated. Lee qualified #1 with an 8.65/156.80, and he set Low ET and Top Speed to the final with an 8.61/159.56 that beat Marriott's 8.71. They did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Shepherd was disappointed when the Camaro broke in the final against Mike Oppen at the Amarillo Division 4 race. |

Notes: Dominated 1980 with 6 wins and 3 runner-ups. Lost the very close championship due to a broken transmission at the World Finals. Ran 8.35/163.45 at Amarillo WCS. Was that altitude factored? Confirmed 160.42 at Englishtown 80. We need to confirm the best sea-level times. | Lee started the '80 season by competing at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show and went on to win, beating Don Nicholson in the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Lee qualified #4 with an 8.52/156.24. He beat Jim Meyer in round one, and in round two, his 8.59/155.97 took out Lee Hunter's Zephyr. In the semifinals, his 8.61 advanced when Bob Glidden's Arrow broke at mid-track. His final-round opponent was to be Kevin Rotty, but Rotty's Camaro broke, so Shepherd soloed to his second NHRA National event Pro Stock win with a 14.38. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Division 4 Opener on March 9. Once again, the two Camaros of Rotty and Shepherd met in the final. This time Kevin's didn't break. Lee got the win with an 8.60/155.97 over Rotty's 8.63/154. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #2 with an 8.49/157.34. He beat Gordie Rivera in round one, and in round two, he beat Frank Iaconio. An 8.50 in the semifinals shut down Joe Satmary's 8.75. In the final, he faced Glidden and his Arrow. Both ran 8.51 (Lee at 156.52), with Shepherd getting the victory. The second Division 4 race was at Green Valley on March 30, and Shepherd set an 8.37 NHRA record in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 161.57 (Top Speed). Once again, the final came down to the two Camaros of Rotty and Shepherd, and once again, the results were the same, with Lee's 8.42/156.52 beating Kevin's 8.58/157. The Reher-Morrison team continued to dominate Division 4 when they showed up at Houston for the third race. Lee ran 8.61 (Low ET) at 154.37 to qualify first and then went on to win with an 8.74/155.97 that beat Sonny Ray's 8.85/152. Things didn't seem to be going so good for the team when they showed up at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and when qualifying ended, Lee's best of 8.54/158.17 got the #5 spot. That put him up against low qualifier Glidden who had just switched to a Fairmont and set a track record 8.41. Lee was off by a tenth and a half, but he cut a good light in their first-round race, and his 8.54/158.73 beat Bob's quicker 8.49/160. In the semifinals, his 8.56/158.17 beat Rotty's 8.57/159. That set up a final round against Frank Iaconio. Frank had lane choice due to an 8.47 in his semifinal race. Once again, Shepherd proved he could drive as his 8.60/159.01 got the win over Iaconio's 8.55/145. This was his third straight NHRA National event victory. |

Notes: Car used destroked big block which help the team in 82 when the 500 CID limit was enforced. After losing the 1980 NHRA World Championship in the last race of the season, the Reher-Morrison team was back in '81 to finish what they started. Driver Lee Shepherd started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.38/160.42 behind Bob Glidden's track record 8.33. Everyone expected a final round showdown between these two, but it wasn't to be. Lee improved to an 8.35/160.14 in the first round, to advance when Ray Allen, driving Bill Jenkins' Camaro fouled. But in round two, Shepherd fouled against Pat Musi. Glidden went on to win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Shepherd once again qualified #2 with an 8.35/160.42 behind Glidden who reset the NHRA record to 8.31. Lee ran 8.41/159.01 and 8.46/159.29 to beat Allen and Mark Yuill in the first two rounds before coming up against Musi in the semifinals. Lee ran 8.48/57.06 and lost to Pat's 8.44/161. At least Lee got to see Glidden lose in the same round to Frank Iaconio. The next race was the NHRA Western Regional at Green Valley. It was an eight-car show and Glidden and Shepherd qualified one-two. This time Shepherd's 8.26/161.87 out-qualified Bob's 8.28. These two would meet in the final. Lee ran 8.30/163.63 in the first round, over Jim Basko's 8.51/161 and an 8.35/163.93 (Top Speed) beat Don Coonce in the semifinals. Bob had run 8.2's in eliminations and in the final Lee pushed the tree too hard to get an advantage and fouled. Both cars ran 8.31/163.04 so if he hadn't fouled it would have been close. Atlanta was the next stop for the team. Shepherd set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.40/159.85. An 8.54 advanced in round one, when Dave Hutchens fouled and in the semifinals he met Glidden. This time it was Bob who fouled and Lee moved into the final with an 8.49/159.01. This time his final round opponent was Iaconio. Lee ran 8.48/159.29 to get the win over Frank's 8.55/157. |

Notes: Ran first 500ci seven at Winternationals with a 7.86/174.75, low qualifier at 7.84/174.08. Ended the year with the second of four World championships. Won Bristol IHRA Spring Nationals with a 7.890 at 176.81. Dropped two tenths by the end of the year with a 7.655. Number 2 qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.775/176.12 (WJ number 1 at 7.762). | Shepherd and the Reher-Morrison team opened their arms to NHRA's 500 cubic inch rule for '82. They had tested their IHRA counterparts in '81 and did well. So, they were looking forward to '82. They started the year at Pomona for the Winternationals, where they qualified #1 with a 7.84/174.08. Lee Shepherd beat Harry Scribner's 8.05/170 in the first round, with a 7.87/174.08. In round two, a 7.86/174.75 (Top Speed and a new NHRA record) beat John Hagen's 8.21/157. In the semifinals, Bob Glidden fouled, and Lee took the win with a 7.84/174.08. In the final, Shepherd ran Frank Iaconio, who was also running 7.8s. Lee slowed to an 8.02/156.52 in the final, giving Iaconio's 7.83/174 the victory. Shepherd more than made up for the loss at the next race, the Gatornationals, where he qualified #1 with new NHRA records of 7.77/177.16. He went on to the final by beating Glidden, Dave Hutchens, and Pat Musi with times of 7.86/175.43, 8.10/172.08 (when Dave fouled), and 8.02/174.71. In the final, he met Iaconio again, but this time Lee's 7.88/174.41 beat Frank's 7.89/172 for the win. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, Shepherd qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 7.85/176.81. In round one, a 7.82/174 beat Hutchens, and in the semifinals, a 7.80 (Low ET) at 174 advanced when Warren Johnson fouled. In the final, he ran Glidden's EXP. Bob tried hard, but his 8.02/174 lost to Lee's 7.81/174.41. At the fourth race of the NHRA season, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, Lee qualified #1 with Low ET of the meet, a 7.81. It was another eight-car show, and Shepherd beat Joe Lepone and a fouling Glidden in the semifinals to face Iaconio in the final for the third time in '82. Once again, Lee came out on top with a 7.90/173, beating Frank's 7.93/173. At the Springnationals, a 7.81/175.43 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. He beat Andy Mannarino in the first round and Jim Meyer in round two with a 7.90/173.41. In the semifinals, he left on Iaconio and won with a 7.96/173.41 over Frank's 7.93/172. He faced Glidden in the final, and it was a close race, with Bob's 7.92/170 just nipping the Camaro's 7.93/172.74 for the win. These two would meet in the final of the next race as well, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. They qualified one-two, with Lee's 8.29 getting the pole for the eight-car field. Shepherd beat Gene Fasching and John Brumley to face Glidden in the final. Lee set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with an 8.27/164.23 over Glidden's right there 8.30/156. Another win came at the Grandnationals in Canada on July 4. He qualified #1 with a 7.82/175.43. In the semifinals, he stopped Iaconio with a 7.80, and in the final, he reset both ends of the NHRA record with a 7.74/178.57 to stop Johnson's 7.88/175. Out of the first seven races, Shepherd had now won five of them. He didn't win at Englishtown for the Summernationals, although he again qualified #1 (7.79, Low ET). He beat Pat Musi, a fouling Iaconio, and Bob Ingles in the semifinals with a 7.84. In the final, he ran Johnson in his Olds Starfire. It was a close race, but Lee had to settle for runner-up honors with his 7.91/173.74, finishing second to Warren's 7.90/174. It was WJ and Oldsmobile's first NHRA win. | Low qualifier and winner at PHR event at Martin MI with a best of 7.79/174.41. We need to validate the 179.91 qualifying speed from the Golden Gates. That number is directly from the qualifying sheet but could not have come up on the three-digit clocks of the day. Likely was 178.92? Lee did run 179.28 during eliminations. Notes: Per Bubba Corzine, Lee was the quickest mountain motor car in 1982 at a 7.62. We need to confirm details. | Lee was at Darlington for IHRA's season-opening Winternationals. He qualified #2 behind Ronnie Sox with a 7.82. He beat William Paris in the first round, and an 8.04 in round two advanced when Roy Hill fouled. But in the semifinals, he lost a motor and slowed to an 8.89 loss to Harold Denton's 8.14. Shepherd was the seventh member of the Holley Seven-Second club with his 7.83 at Darlington 3/82. |

Notes: This was the car and the team everybody was trying to beat in '83. Shepherd was impossible to "rattle" behind the wheel. Lee started the season by qualifying #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.87/174.41. He beat Jerry Eckman in the first round, with a 7.90. In the second round, he faced low qualifier Bob Glidden, and Shepherd fouled away a 7.85/174.41 while Bob advanced with a 7.93. Lee made up for his mistake by dominating the NHRA Gatornationals. His 7.67/181.08 (Top Speed) qualified #1. He then set Low ET of the meet in the opening round, where his 7.64/181.08 beat Johnny Dowey. In round two, Joe Lepone's 7.79/176 fell to his 7.70/180.00. He dumped Glidden in the semifinal with a 7.66/181.08 (again!) before facing Frank Iaconio in an all Camaro final. Iaconio knew he had to push the tree, and he did a little too hard, fouling away a 7.75/180 while Shepherd ran 7.68/180.00 for the victory. The next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This was an eight-car field, and Shepherd's 7.81/176.81 qualified #2 behind Iaconio's 7.80. Lee's 7.85/172.41 advanced past a fouling Bubba Corzine in the opening round, and in the semifinal, his 7.82/175.78 beat Warren Johnson's 7.86/174. He faced Lepone in the final, and Joe fouled, giving Lee his second win of the young season with a 9.21/105.75. He didn't have to wait long before winning again. That came on May 29 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and he qualified #3 at 7.76/177.51. Corzine fouled against him again in the opening round, and Lee moved on with a 7.84/176.81. In the semifinal, a 7.82/177.16 beat Johnson. He faced Iaconio again in another final, and Lee's 7.76/177.86 scored the win. Ran best times of 7.652/181.81 at the OCIR World Finals. Earlier ran 181.81 at Indy. Lost on a holeshot to WJ in the race but came from behind to clinch his third straight Winston Pro Stock championship after points leader and No. 1 qualifier Frank Iaconio was upset by Reid Whisnant in round one. Notes: Won IHRA Fall Nationals at Bristol with a 7.623 at 180.36. | This was the team to beat in '83 regardless of running NHRA or the big-inch IHRA motors. They had tested the waters in IHRA the year before at Bristol for the Springnationals. To say that they did well was an understatement. Shepherd qualified #1, set Low ET and Top Speed and won the race. So, they came back in '83 to go for the championship. At the season opening Winternationals at Darlington, Lee qualified #1 with a 7.71/178.92. He set Low ET and a track record in the first round, with a 7.68 over a fouling Chuck Sneed. In round two, a 7.70/180.36 beat Harold Denton while a semifinal 7.72/181.08 (Top Speed) beat Mickey Stephens and moved Shepherd into the final against Warren Johnson. It was a close race, but the Camaro's 7.69/181 got the victory over WJ's Cutlass at 7.72/180. The Reher-Morrison team really opened some eyes at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Lee qualified #1 with an unheard-of 7.53/183.29 (good for Low ET and Top Speed as well as track records). He advanced to the final where he met second qualifier, Rickie Smith. Smith got the jump and his 7.70 beat Lee's 7.72 for the win. Shepherd made a rare mistake at the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk Raceway. He had beaten Johnson in the semifinals and forgot to weigh in after the run. He was disqualified for his oversight and Warren was reinstated. It was the only IHRA final round in '83 that would not have Shepherd in it. He still managed to set Low ET at 7.67. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Lee again qualified #1 with a 7.70 (Low ET) at 178. He made his way to the final, stopping Johnson in the semifinals with a 7.75/177.86. Once again, he faced Smith's T-Bird in the final, and once again, Rickie finished first. A quick-leaving 7.82/177 held off Lee's runner-up 7.72/176. He picked up another win at Milan Dragway in July for the IHRA Northern Nationals. There, he set Low ET at 7.60 and stopped Bob Glidden in the final. On September 11, the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. Lee's 7.61 (Low ET) at 181.81 qualified #1 and once again, he ran Smith in another Ford vs. Chevy final. Rickie seemed to have Lee's number as he beat Shepherd for the win. |

Notes: The Reher-Morrison team started the season with Shepherd qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.68/179.64. Lee beat Roy Hill in the first round, while in round two, his 7.78 beat Don Coonce's 7.89. Another 7.78 advanced in the semifinals when Bob Glidden fouled against him. That set up a final-round meeting with Frank Iaconio. These two met in the Winternationals final in '82, with Iaconio winning. This time, it was Shepherd's turn, as his 7.71/178.57 secured the victory over Frank's 7.76/174. The competition was hot at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Forty-six cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Lee led them all with a new NHRA national record of 7.62 at 181.08. He slowed down a tenth in the first round, with a 7.72/179.28, but Lee didn't need it as Joe Lepone fouled. But in round two, Iaconio ran 7.71/176 to beat Lee's 7.77/179.99. The next race was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Lee only qualified #5 with a 7.78/177.86, but he beat Sam Carroll, Warren Johnson, and Glidden to reach the final. There he used a holeshot 7.78/177.86 to get the victory over a strong running Don Campanello, who runner-upped with a 7.74/179. Baton Rouge was NHRA's next stop for the Cajun Nationals. There, Lee would win his third title in four starts. He qualified #3 with a 7.68/182.18. He made his way into the final by getting by a fouling Glidden in the semifinals with a 7.81/176. In the final, Butch Leal also pulled a red light, and Shepherd ran 7.75/181.08 for the win. Another win came at the next race, the NHRA Springnationals, in June. A 7.76 qualified #3, and a 7.75/176 got him into the final when Gordie Rivera "bulbed" against him in the semifinal. This time, Brad Yuill was Lee's final round victim, and a 7.75/178.57 did him in. This was Shepherd's last victory in NHRA competition. Lee failed to reach the final at the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.68/180.72, but in the semifinals, Glidden gated him, and his 7.78 beat Shepherd's quicker 7.75. Glidden got him again at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Lee only qualified #6 with a 7.72. He beat Charlie Garrett in round one and WJ in round two. In the semifinals, his 7.80 beat Lepone's 7.87. This put him into the final with Bob. Glidden had the edge as he had run 7.71 in his semifinal heat. Sure enough, Glidden ran another 7.71/178 to beat the Camaro's 7.77/177.51. Lee reached the final in the next event as well, the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #2 and advanced into the final against Warren Johnson. WJ had set a track record in qualifying #1, and once again, Lee had to settle for the runner-up spot. His 8.14/166.97 was no match for the Oldsmobile driver's 8.07/171. These two would continue to run strong at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Glidden stole the thunder in qualifying by qualifying #1, but Shepherd was #2 with a 7.75/178.92 while WJ was #3. The semifinals saw Lee beat Iaconio while WJ took out Glidden. It was a close final, with WJ getting the victory with a 7.75/180 over Lee's 7.76/177.16. Things didn't go too well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. A 7.71/178.21 qualified #4, and they picked up to a 7.66/178.21 in the first round to beat Sam Gianino, but in round two, a slipping clutch slowed the car to an 8.85 loss to Rivera. WJ went on to win his third NHRA event in a row and close the points gap. Going into the NHRA World Finals, the NHRA Pro Stock Championship was up for grabs between these two. Lee qualified #3 at 7.69/178.21, while WJ wasn't far behind in the #5 spot. But the big points race ended quickly when WJ was upset by Rickie Smith in the first round. Lee ran 7.71/178.57 to beat Lepone, and the NHRA title was his for the fourth year in a row. A round two 7.72/175.43 beat Rivera, but in the semifinals, he had problems and shut down to an 8.04/130.81, losing to eventual winner Glidden. It was interesting to note that, in no NHRA event in '84, did Lee set Low ET or Top Speed. Quite a difference from previous years. This also said a lot about Shepherd as a driver. Even at Gainesville with the 7.62 NHRA record, Reid Whisnant had gotten Low ET with a controversial 7.61. The team was dominating the IHRA side of things as well, with all kinds of records there. |

Notes: Swept Bristol IHRA races in 1984: Springs with a 7.566 at 183.29 and Falls with a 7.556 at 186.33. Ran 7.565/183.67 at IHRA Cincinnati. Note: the hood scoops were later outlawed. | The Texas Trio was out in force to win the IHRA and the NHRA Championships in '84. The IHRA season started in March at Darlington for the Winternationals. The team had changed some things from the '83 season. The car was now using a lower first gear. The rear end was switched from 5.29 to 4.88 and a heavier clutch was used. A larger rear spoiler was also used. On Lee's first qualifying attempt, a sidewall split on a rear slick and he logged an 11-second time. But after that, he ran 7.52, 7.50, 7.49, and 7.48/186.72 (Top Speed). Any one of those runs was good enough for the pole. In the opening round, Shepherd’s 7.54/183 advanced when Don Campanello fouled. Sam Carroll fouled against him in round two and Lee moved forward with a 7.49/185. He set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.47/185 over Roy Hill who also fouled. He faced #2 qualifier, Darrell Alderman, in Gary Duckworth's Camaro in the final. Lee got the victory with a 7.49/184.42 while Alderman shut down early. Both Lee's 7.47 and 186.72 marks were new IHRA records. The team also won the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. Lee qualified #1, set Low ET at 7.48, and beat Rickie Smith in the final. The next IHRA event was the Springnationals held at Bristol. A 7.57 (Low ET) at 181.45 qualified #1. A first-round 7.59/183.67 beat Smith and he downed another Ford in round two, the T-Bird of Bob Glidden. Lee’s 7.60/184.80 stopped Glidden's 7.64/183. In the semifinals, his 7.61/182.92 beat Joe Lepone's 7.68/180 in the "Palmer Bros." Firebird. His final round victim at this race was Billy Ewing, driving the former Johnny Dowey Camaro. Shepherd took the win with a 7.70/183.29 over Ewing's 7.75/177. Milan was tough on the other Pro Stock racers. Nobody else in IHRA Pro Stock racing had yet to run a 7.4 and the Reher-Morrison team had a habit of making it look easy. They showed up at Milan with a 640 cubic inch engine combination. At the Northern Nationals, Lee reset the IHRA record to 7.45 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 187.11. He then ran 7.47/186, 7.56/184 (over Warren Johnson), and 7.51/184 to reach the final. He faced Smith again and the results were the same, Shepherd’s 7.52/185.95 scored the win over Rickie's 7.58/182. The next stop on the IHRA tour was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. Shepherd took his 12th consecutive pole with a 7.58/181.81. He then improved to a 7.51 for Low ET and in the semifinals, his 7.56/183.67 beat Hill. For the third time in '84 the final came down to Smith vs. Shepherd. For the first time in '84, Rickie was able to turn the tables and win. He put a holeshot on Lee that saw his 7.63/183 beat Shepherd's 7.56/184.42 (Top Speed). Of course, Lee qualified #1 at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. The track record going into this race was 7.67 and Lee ran 7.48/184.80 for the pole. A 7.49 beat Alderman in the opening round and he then beat Lepone and Smith to reach the final against Hill. Roy fouled and Shepherd claimed another IHRA title with a 7.51/184.04. |

Notes: Drag racing lost one of its most popular champions when Lee died in April 1985 in a crash at Ardmore, OK, during a testing session. He ran his final NHRA National event at Pomona in February for the Winternationals. His 7.603/181.23 qualified #2 behind Bob Glidden's 7.55/186. He ran 7.605 at 180.57 in the opening round of eliminations to defeat Tony Christian's 7.74/178. But in round two, holeshot artist Butch Leal did just that. He laid a holeshot on Shepherd that saw his 7.697/178 beat Lee's 7.666/179.78. |
