Notes: Shiroma was at Fremont's Fuel Championships in August. It was a sixteen-car field, and Stan ran well. His 7.05/213.76 in the opening round of eliminations beat Dennis Baca, who had clutch problems and shut off. Bill Alexander fouled against him in round two, and a 7.14/220 advanced. But in the semifinal, his 7.22/216.34 lost to James Warren's 7.19/222. He ran 6.904/221.12 to qualify #10 at Indy's 32-car field for the NHRA US Nationals. Unfortunately, he fouled against Ron Manke in the opening round.

Notes: Won three straight weekends at Lions and set a track record at 6.63. This car didn't get the recognition it deserved, beating a lot of the "name" drivers at the time. Stan ran at Irwindale's New Year's Day Funny Car Festival to start the season. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show with a 7.28. In the first round, he beat Mert Littlefield with a 7.54/189.06. In round two, he got past a motor blowing Ron O'Donnell and in the semifinals, he beat Gene Conway, but blew his engine doing it and was unable to make the final. He was at OCIR for the first All-Pro event where he beat Conway in the first round, with a 7.10/204.54. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jim Dunn in the semifinals. Lions hosted the AHRA Grand American on January 10 and Shiroma made it to the final. He ran a 7.71 over Dick Harrell's Vega and a 7.12 beat Larry Arnold in round two. A semifinal 7.55 beat a tire-smoking Dunn and advanced him into the final against Gene Snow. The 'Cuda lost fire on the line and Snow singled for the win. At Pomona for the Winternationals. Stan qualified #6 with a 7.17. In the first round, he advanced with a 7.19/205.47 when Don Prudhomme broke. He lost in round two when the 'Cuda failed to fire advancing Snow. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lost in the second round to Dunn. Still, in March, he raced at an eight-car show at OCIR. He lost to John Lombardo in the first round. On March 20 he was at Irwindale for the "Potpourri" race. He set Low ET at 7.17, but failed to make the finals. He was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race on March 27. He ran a strong 6.95/211.76 over Conway in round one, but in round two he lost to Dave Beebe. The "Skulker" caught fire on the run, but Stan was OK. He was back in business in April at an eight-car show at Lions. A first-round 7.05/189.47 beat Wendell Shipman and in the semifinals, a good 7.00/208.33 lost to Dunn's better 6.92/194. At the OCIR "Hang Ten" Funny Car race, Stan ran a 7.11/189.87 in the first round, over Densham's 7.24. In round two a 6.94/213.27 beat Bob Hawkins, but he lost to Rich Siroonian in the semifinals.

Notes: Shiroma qualified the "Pacemaker" Vega #19 at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.72/218.44. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.66/218.97 beat Tom McEwen's ailing Duster at 7.30/163. A better 6.64/212.76 advanced over Kenny Bernstein, who lost a blower in Ray Alley's Charger. But despite running a strong 6.51/220.58 in round three, he was late off the line, and he lost to Jim Paoli's 6.55/216. The team entered the NHRA Winternationals, and Stan qualified #10 at 7.579/210.34, finding a way to get down the terrible track surface. Stan fouled against TOm Hoover in round one, losing despite going quicker. Tom ran 7.78/133 for the win, while Stan's 7.641/197.80 left the red eye glowing.

Notes: Shiroma started his season at Ontario Motor Speedway's New Year's Day race. He qualified #13 with a 6.67. But his opening round 6.55/225 lost to Flip Schofield's 6.34/208. After that, he went to Irwindale for the Grand Premiere event. He really shook them up there when he qualified on the pole with his 5.86 (Low ET) at 236.84. It was the first time a Chevy-powered Top Fuel car had broken into the 5.8 barrier. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to the eventual winner Rance McDaniel, who was also running a Chevy-powered car. Shiroma ran 6.069/236.22 for the fourth alternate at the Pomona Winternationals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #25 in the 32-car field. In the opening round, he developed some trouble and was shut off on the line. His opponent, Gary Ritter, advanced with a 6.20. He had a bad weekend in Portland on June 6. He was there for the Rose Festival Drag Championships. It was a fourteen-car field, and Stan lost an engine while qualifying #12 with a 6.88. In the opening round of eliminations, he beat Bob Mitchell's 6.22/226 with a 6.20/211, but it cost him another motor, and he was done for the day. Stan qualified #10 at the NHRA Fallnationals at 6.045/223.88 but lost first-round to a Gary Beck holeshot, 6.19/233 to 6.18/217. He qualified #15 at Ontario at 6.053/233.16. In round one, he beat Ray Stutz, 6.35/230.76 to 6.43/235.60, but Dennis Baca got him in round two, 5.99/231.95 to 6.52/193.96.

Notes: Shiroma was at Irwindale on August 16 for the final NHRA Division 7 race. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.29 qualified #8. Another 6.29/221.67 beat Mike Reynolds in the first round, while in round two, his 6.43/206.70 defeated Jim Plummer's 6.49/199. Stan then lost to Rod Dunne in the semifinal. He won the NHRA Fallnationals in the first all Chevy final (against Rance McDaniel). Comp number changed from 7772 to 718 in 1977. Stan holds the last Irwindale ET record at 5.84. Best NHRA National event times were 6.002/240.00 in qualifying at Seattle, which he won. Stan did not qualify at the Winters, but we don't see the team running at any other NHRA national event this year.
