Notes: Dennis was from Alaska, but the car was housed in Phoenix. Tripp's '76 season consisted of 65 races. The car averaged 6.61 in 125 passes and won the Coca-Cola Cavalcade title. In the sixteen race series, he won three races and was runner-up eight times. The best NHRA national event times were 6.137/228.42 at the Pomona Winters. | Saw this car at the 1976 SIR 64 Funny Car event, completed in the overcast daytime in a rush. It was my last chance to see some early 70s type FCs (Halibrands in front, 6.71s, steel motors.) The CC Cavalcade ran their own bracket, Shumake over Custy. - Joe Moore

Notes: Ran 6.17 at Union Grove, 6.12 at Indy, 6.14 at Seattle. | If there was ever a time not to debut a new car it would have to be at Indy for the US Nationals. But that's what Tripp Shumake did in 1977. There were almost 40 FC's trying to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Crew chief Dan Geare showed that he knew his stuff by tuning Tripp to 6.17 and 6.12 times (at 231.36) in qualifying. Either time would have made the show, but the 6.12 put him in the #5 spot. In the first round Shumake's 6.39/216 beat alternate Gene Snow who got into the field after Dale Emery crashed in qualifying. In the second round, Tripp shut off to 9.59/95 with problems, losing to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.10/228. At Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, Tripp set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.14. Only fifteen cars showed so Tripp got the "odd-lot" solo in the opening round. A second round 6.28/223.88 beat Gordie Bonin's 6.40/230, but a semifinal 6.29/223.32 lost a close one to Jim Dunn's 6.28/229. Irwindale held its last race on October 1 and the "Powers Steel" car was there. It was a sixteen-car show and in round one, Tripp's 6.40/205 beat Tom Prock, who had problems and shut off. In the second round, he improved to 6.27 at only 202 to beat Ron Colson's 6.47/221 in the "Hawaiian." Unfortunately, the car broke on the line in the semifinals, giving opponent Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" a solo into the final. A week later (October. 9), the team was at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. Shumake's 6.27/231 qualified #14. A quick-leaving 6.42 beat Henry Harrison's quicker 6.37 in round one, but once again the car broke (transmission) and he lost to Prudhomme in round two.

Notes: Tripp was at OCIR for a sixteen-car show in March. While he didn't win or even reach the final, he did run 6.41 twice. Dennis is from Alaska, but the car is housed in Phoenix. Later this year, Tripp took over driving the Powers Steel Camaro.

Notes: Shumake started the season at OCIR's Super Bowl, where he ran second Low ET with a 6.77 and was supposed to face John Lombardo for the title, but breakage kept him from running, and Raymond Beadle took his place in the final. At Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with a 6.58. As attested by his first-round win over Tom Hoover, Traction was poor with a 7.08/211 beating Tom's 7.23/202. He lost to Don Prudhomme in round two. Tripp qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.157 (at 234.37) held for Low ET. A first-round 6.59/218 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.33/212. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. A 6.23 (Low ET) at 232.55 qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he raced Simon Menzies' alcohol burner and beat his 7.37 by almost a second with a 6.40/226.13. A second-round 6.46/224.43 beat a crossed-up Bob Pickett, and in the semifinals, he ran 6.36/231.36 over a tire-smoking John Collins. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and, for a change, the "Snake" was the underdog as Tripp's times in eliminations were about a tenth better. Sure enough, Don tried too hard, and he smoked the tires and shut off in the final while Tripp ran 6.75/218.44 for the victory. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #7 with a 6.37/237.46. A first-round 6.40/232.55 beat Ed McCulloch, but in round two, his 6.44 fell to Dale Pulde's 6.37. A week after that (March 19), Tripp was at LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 Opener. His 6.52/207.37 qualified #1, and as the field was short, he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one and advanced with a 9.89/91.64. Tripp was late off the line in his semifinal race against Tom Hoover. He tried so hard to catch Tom he set speed with his 6.78/224.43 losing to Hoover's 6.80/205. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he did not get a speed on his qualifying run, but his 6.07 was second only to Prudhomme's 6.00. A 6.23/227.84 defeated Gary Cochran, who lost a blower belt in the opening round. Bryan Raines ailing 6.70/200 in the second round, lost to his 6.44/223.88. He got another easy pass in the semifinal when Dave Condit broke. Tripp still ran 6.22/230.76. He faced Denny Savage in the final, and Savage was tough. He had also won his semifinal race with a 6.22 and qualified #3 with a 6.09. Savage came through in the final, running 6.21/214 to win over Shumake's 6.30/226.70. In April, he competed at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.50/222.77, forcing him to run low qualifier Lombardo in the opening round of eliminations. Both smoked the tires, and John's 6.51/231 lost to Shumake's 6.54/226.70. Another tire-smoking 6.92/200.44 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Bob Pickett's 6.52/227. Shortly after that, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.74 and another 6.74 at 219.50 beat Randy Lackey in the first round. Tripp then set Low ET with a 6.71/218.76 in the semifinals to beat Hoover's close 6.73/216. He faced Gene Snow in the final, and a 6.79/218.44 won the race over the "Snowman's" 6.90/217. On May 13, he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race. A 6.23 qualified #5, which meant he had to run low qualifier Prudhomme in the opening round. It wasn't much of a race as the "Snake's" 6.04/240 easily covered Tripp's 6.38/231.95. He made up for that by winning the NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater on May 21. It wasn't much of a race, as only two FCs showed. His final round 6.48/223.32 (Top Speed) beat Steve Stephens there. Tripp had earlier run 6.44 in qualifying for Low ET as well. His next stop was at Bandimere on June 3 for the NHRA Division 5 race. His 6.72/213.27 in qualifying stood for Low ET and Top Speed. With the field being short, he got a solo in round one. He crossed the centerline and was disqualified in his race against Danny Pickett in the semifinal. I loved his words after the fact, "After the third time I crossed the centerline, I figured that they must have saw me, so I shut off." At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.22/226.70 qualified #7. He improved to 6.15/232.55 in the opening round to beat Al Segrini's 6.29/223, and a 6.22/226.13 trailered Burgin's 6.40/230 in round two. But despite running a strong 6.17/230.76 in the semifinals, he lost to Prudhomme's Low ET and Top Speed blast of 6.07/241. The following week (June 18), found Tripp at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He had some bad luck qualifying when he had a blower explode, a two-speed transmission fail, and a rear-end break. After getting everything straightened out, he ran a 6.35/234.37 to qualify #3. After all that work, he popped another blower in the first round and lost to Roger Lindamood. Shumake did not compete at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Johnny Loper took delivery of a new Sarte-built Arrow on August 8. They ran the old car at Beeline Dragway for the Gold Cup Funny Car Championships. Tripp won his final race in the "old car," running a best of 6.60/220 and stopping Henry Harrison in the final. The new car debuted at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Things didn't start too well, as, on one qualifying attempt, the new car turned into a fireball when the motor blew. The team got things going and managed to qualify #6 with a 6.09/237.46. An opening round 6.22/229.59 defeated Dale Pulde's 6.34/228. But he faced Prudhomme in round two, and once again, it was like hitting a wall; his 6.32/193.13 lost to Don's 6.04/243. The following week (September 10), he was back at Beeline for the NHRA Division 7 final. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.68 and a shutoff 9.56/96.96 in the opening round lost to Billy Meyer's 7.03/214. The team had another bad outing at OCIR for the Dr. Pepper Funny Car Championships. All cars were to make two passes, and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. Tripp's troubled 7.08 beat Pulde's equally troubled 7.11 in his first race, and he was not even able to race John Force in the second race as his 'chute fell out on the line. Confirmed NHRA bests of 6.097 at Indy and 237.46 at the Gators and Indy.

Notes: Johnny Loper started the season with an Arrow, but he changed over to a Mustang body at the end of June. Tripp was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.131/243.90 (Top Speed). He beat Gordie Bonin and Tom Prock in the first two rounds before losing to eventual winner Tom Hoover's 6.24/234 with a 6.36/225.56. He won the Division 7 Opener at Beeline two weeks later (February 18), stopping Kenny Bernstein in the final. His next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet. It was a sixteen-car field, and he lasted until round two before the car shook the tires hard, and he shut off against Bernstein. Shumake set Top Speed at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #4 at 6.26/243.90 (again setting Top Speed). Unfortunately, he got crossed up and shut off in the first round against eventual winner Bonin. The following week (March 18), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.24 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. He lasted until the semifinals before being stopped by Dale Pulde's 6.21 in the semifinals with an off-pace 6.82. He also ran at Atlanta on April 22 for the IHRA Dixie Nationals, but he failed to reach the finals. Things didn't go too well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was rained out on April 29 and run on May 2. Tripp used up two motors attempting to qualify for the eight-car field, but he ended up as the first alternate with a best of 6.46/230.17. The NHRA Springnationals saw Shumake qualify #6 with a 6.18/236.84. But an opening-round 6.322/236.84 lost to Jim Adolph's 6.28/216. Rain postponed the IHRA Springnationals that was supposed to run at Bristol on June 17 to the following week, June 24. Eliminations there didn't matter to Tripp as he lost a blower in qualifying and the resulting fire wrecked the Arrow body. Shumake was OK. After that, the Mustang replaced the Arrow. The Pomona times were the Arrow's bests.

Notes: After Johnny Loper's Arrow body burnt up at the IHRA Springnationals, Loper replaced it with this Mustang. It was run at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals where Tripp placed it on the "bump" for the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. Things went better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.29/233.16 qualified #14 and an improved 6.23 in the first round, beat Bernstein's 6.28. Shumake got an easy single in round two when Tom McEwen was unable to run, but, in the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max.”He won the Byron Funny Car race in July. In the first round, he even beat Don Prudhomme with a 6.45/230.76. He faced Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" in the final and Colson crossed the centerline giving Tripp the victory. The next stop was at Dragway 42, West Salem, Ohio for the AHRA Grandnationals. Tripp made it into the semifinals before losing to eventual winner Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle.” Surprisingly, he failed to qualify for the PHR Championships. Yet the next week he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.11/240.64. In the first round, he slowed to 6.29 in a loss to Gary Burgin's 6.20. Then came Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals. A 6.07/244.56 qualified well enough, but in the first round, he went into hard tire shake and shut off against Kosty Ivanof. Seattle was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Fallnationals. Tripp qualified #13 with a 6.29/236.84. Pat Foster fouled against him in the opening round and Shumake's 6.26/207.85 advanced. In round two he ran his best time of the weekend, a 6.23/225.56, but it wasn't enough to beat Colson's 6.02/238. The team ended the season on a high note at the NHRA World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway. Tripp qualified #8 with a 6.37/230.17. The track was bad as everyone seemed to be smoking their tires. In round one, Pulde boiled the hides and Tripp's 6.54/229.59 advanced. In round two, both he and Beadle smoked heavily with Shumake's 6.60/227.27 coming out on top over Beadle's 6.74/225. The semifinals saw more of the same, it was smoke city, but Tripp recovered first in his race against John Force. His 6.88/231.86 got him the win. In the final, he faced Gordie Bonin. Tripp slipped and slid to 6.91/213.27 in a runner-up finish to Bonin's 6.53/234. All in all, it was a good season for the team as they finished seventh in NHRA points.

Notes: Tripp started the '80 season by attempting to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He failed to make the field, and his 6.23/242.58 was good for the third alternate. He competed at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet but failed to reach the late rounds. A week later (March 16), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #2 with a career-best (to this point) 6.023/241.28 (Top Speed of the Meet). Unfortunately, his steering broke in the first round, and he lost to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." He was at the NHRA Divisional race at Beeline, but he shut off to a 9.34 in the first round, and lost to Bob Pickett. On April 20, Shumake grabbed a big win at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. Tripp qualified #4 in the eight-car field. An opening round 6.34 beat Al Baldwin, and in the semifinals, his 6.32 beat a tire-smoking Paul Smith who was driving Larry Coogle's "Sting." In the final, he ran an easy 7.24 when Dale Pulde broke a rear end in the "War Eagle." Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals the following week on April 27, and the eight-car field was a tough one to qualify in. Tripp just made it, qualifying on the "bump" with a 6.18/241.28. Non-qualifiers included Don Prudhomme, Raymond Beadle, and Pulde. In the first round, he beat Tom Hoover's 6.27 with a 6.25/234, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off, giving eventual winner Billy Meyer an easy (?) 6.32/226 ride into the final. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. But he did make the show at the NHRA Springnationals. He lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round, after qualifying #6 with a 6.18/237.46. Tripp also failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Shumake qualified #15 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.10/238.72, and in the opening round of competition, his 6.46/230.17 advanced over a tire-smoking Rob Williams. He lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch in round two.

Notes: At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tripp qualified on the "bump" with a 6.28/238.06. He beat Dale Pulde in the first round before breaking in round two and losing to John Force. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he ran 6.10/242.58 to qualify #14. A 6.11/238.72 in round one beat a tire-shaking Tim Grose, while in round two, his 6.27/237.46 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.31/230 in the "Blue Max." He fell off to a 6.75/174.75 in the semifinals that lost to Pulde's 6.33/223. He was at Green Valley on April 5 for the NHRA Western Regional, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car field. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Jim Dunn. Jim smoked the tires and shut off while Tripp advanced with a 6.92/221.67. In the semifinals, his 6.47 lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover's 6.25. Tripp won the Southern Nationals. His 5.989/226.70 in Atlanta was the 8th and final entry into the Cragar Five-Second Club for funny cars. It qualified him #2 behind Beadle's 5.96/230. His 6.10/233.76 beat Paul Smith, who shut down early in the "Entertainer" in the opening round. His opponent, Shirl Greer, smoked the tires in the semifinal, and Tripp ran 6.20/226.59 to advance. He faced Kenny Bernstein in the final, and Shumake's 6.07/233.76 got the victory over Bernstein's 6.08/243. Tripp qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.26/224.43. In round one, his 6.36/222.22 fell to eventual winner Craig Epperly's 6.27/224. Shortly after that (June 27), he was in Sacramento for the NHRA Western Regional. A 6.55/214.80 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. He improved to 6.34/229.60 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Tom Ridings' 6.28/225. The best NHRA national event speed was 242.58 at the Gatornationals.

Notes: Tripp ran as team car "blocker" for Meyer's title points chase in final two NHRA events. Tripp qualified #7 at Fremont at 6.036/240.64, but rocketed to a 5.940/250.00 to beat a fouling Dale Pulde in round one, (5.99/233). Trip lost to Frank Hawley in round two, 5.89/239 to 6.048/241.93. Tripp qualified #5 at the World Finals at 5.975/229.59. In round one, he unloaded a 5.834/232.55 to take out Tim Grose at 6.67/157. In round two, he beat Don Prudhomme, 6.487/231.95 to 16.28/36. He beat Frank Hawley in the semis, 6.039/226.69 to 6.18/218, while team owner Billy Meyer was losing to Kenny Bernstein. In the final Tripp sealed the deal with a 5.864/243.24 win over Bernstein at 6.23/223. He was let go after winning the World Finals. The Fremont 250.00 was the fourth entry in the Crane Cams 250 mph Club for Funny Car (Meyer himself owned the second entry).

Notes: Tripp was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Traction was horrible as Low ET of the meet was 6.21 (and that was a track record). Shumake didn't run quite that well, but in the first round, he advanced with a 6.48/224.42 when John Force fouled. In the semifinals, he ran 6.30, but lost to Don Prudhomme's holeshot aided 6.34. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with a 6.058/238.09. A 6.147/243.24 beat Frank Hall in the first round, and in round two, he set Top Speed of the meet on a 6.068/246.57 pass, losing run to Raymond Beadle's 6.02/239 in the "Blue Max." At the Bakersfield March Meet, Tripp qualified #6 in the eight-car show with a 6.28. He beat Mike Van Sant in the "Invader" Mustang in the first round, while in the semifinals, his 6.24/230.17 beat Tom McEwen's 6.44/223 to advance into the final. There, he lost to Tom Ridings. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals. His best of 6.201/242.58 was good for the third alternate. He also failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals when the car broke. By the time the team rolled into Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals on May 30, the Arrow had become a Dodge Omni. It was an eight-car field and Tripp ran 6.239/236.84 to qualify #7. He lost to Billy Meyer in the first round, 6.09/244 to 6.216/235.60. At the next NHRA event, the Springnationals, Shumake qualified on the "bump" with a 6.192/225.56. He lost to Force in the first round, on a holehot, 6.30/235.60 to Tripp's 6.242/235.60. That was Tripp's last national event in this car. He raced a car for Billy Meyer for the last two events of the year. Photo from OCIR 1982.

Notes: Tripp started the '83 season at Pomona. He qualified in the unlucky #9 spot with a 6.206/244.56. It was unlucky because by qualifying in that spot you had to run the #1 qualifier in the first round. Shumake ran low qualifier Tom Anderson, and sure enough, Tom's 5.960/242.58 put the Camaro's 6.158/245.90 on the trailer. Back on the match race trail, the team ran an ungodly 5.749 at the 64 Funny Cars event at Orange County in April. They also competed at the Fuel Wars event in Fremont, but failed to impress with three straight losses due to tire shake and other maladies. The team’s next NHRA event was the Springnationals at Columbus, where Tripp did not qualify at 6.267/222.22. The team also failed to qualify at the US Nationals where their 6.017/243.90 was the fifth alternate. The team recovered at the Golden Gate Nationals, where a stout 5.858/250.00 grabbed the fourth slot in the eight-car field. Tripp defeated Dale Pulde in round one, 5.901/249.30 to 6.038/240.64, but fell to Billy Meyer in round two, 5.843/229.59 to 6.240/208.81. The team finished their NHRA season by qualifying #11 at the World Finals with a 5.932/247.25. Emerging star John Force got them in the first round, however, 5.809/247.25 to 6.174/179.64. Notes: The photo shows Tim Grose in the car, but Tripp Shumake was the first driver at the '84 Finals, running Saturday Q1/2, first a 6.07/198.67, then a finish line weaving, off and off and off on the throttle 6.39/211.76. Notes: Tripp qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.427/268.09. In the first round, he had a blower explode. The car caught fire, and Shumake fought for control, crossing the centerline before bringing it back into his own lane and hitting the guardrail. He got the car stopped, and he was OK. By the time the IHRA Winternationals rolled around in March, the car was fixed. Tripp qualified for the eight-car show and ran 5.56/258.62 in the first round, to beat a tire-smoking Brad Tuttle. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.44/269.46 when Ed McCulloch broke on the line. In the final, he faced low qualifier, John Force. John fouled, and Tripp took the victory by idling to an 11.10 for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.501/264.62 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to R.C. Sherman, 5.83/250 to 6.024/237.65. That was Tripp's last NHRA national event this year. A week later (March 27), he was at Bradenton for the IHRA Supernationals. A first-round 5.69 lost to Force's 5.64. Photo from Milan, MI, 1988, with Pulde driving. Did Tripp run 5.405 in this car? Formerly listed that time but removed it until we get confirmation.
