Notes: Tripp qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.427/268.09. In the first round, he had a blower explode. The car caught fire, and Shumake fought for control, crossing the centerline before bringing it back into his own lane and hitting the guardrail. He got the car stopped, and he was OK. By the time the IHRA Winternationals rolled around in March, the car was fixed. Tripp qualified for the eight-car show and ran 5.56/258.62 in the first round, to beat a tire-smoking Brad Tuttle. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.44/269.46 when Ed McCulloch broke on the line. In the final, he faced low qualifier, John Force. John fouled, and Tripp took the victory by idling to an 11.10 for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.501/264.62 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to R.C. Sherman, 5.83/250 to 6.024/237.65. That was Tripp's last NHRA national event this year. A week later (March 27), he was at Bradenton for the IHRA Supernationals.
