Notes: Bob was in New England in September for its annual FC Nationals. It was a 32-car field, and in round one, his 7.08/184 beat an engine blowing Al Hanna in the "Eastern Raider." In the second round, he ran George Johnson, and both cars broke on the run, but Johnson outcoasted Simmons to the finish line. "FREE" paint job for this car. Notes: Did not run any NHRA national events in 1978. | Bob was at Englishtown on May 7 for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. In his first-round race, it was Monza vs. Monza his 6.77/199.11 beat Carl Ruth's 7.48/163. But in the semifinals, his off-pace 7.54/163.93 lost to yet another Monza bodied car, Les Cassidy, who won with a 6.64/177. He was at Maryland International on June 25 for the third NHRA Division 1 race. A 8.13/137 advanced in the opening round when his opponent, John Camamis, had problems. But in the semifinal, eventual winner Frank Mancuso's 6.85 beat his slowing 12.97. |

He Faced #1 Qualifier John Carey in round 1 where Simmons scored the upset with a 5.599/254.57.
