Notes: Little Bobby Sir Kegian was just 14 years old, two years shy of being old enough to get a driver's license in 1954. He was a freshman at Arcadia High School. By the start of the year, he had accumulated 69 trophies, set five records, and won three championships. "It's timing, just like in other sports," Bobby said about his success, "that counts in this racing, but skill, which you get only through racing, is a big thing, too." He sounded all the world like a pretty grown-up teenager, wise beyond his years. After his whirlwind debut in the Southern California drag racing scene in 1953, he took right up where he left off in 1954. On January 10 at Pomona, he took another triple win with speed improvements in each class: B Fuel Bike (126.72 mph), A Gas Bike (113.06 mph), and B Gas Bike (110.82 mph). On Jan. 31, he took wins in A Gas Bike (103.41 mph) and B Gas Bike (108.91 mph). On Feb. 7 at Pomona, he notched two wins in the gas classes: Class A (101.96 mph) and Class B (106.91 mph). At Pomona on Feb. 28, he won A Gas Bike (106.00 mph) and B Gas Bike (100.00 mph). Two weeks later at Pomona, on Mar. 14, he took two wins in the gas classes: Class A (104.00 mph) and Class B (107.81 mph). At Pomona on Mar. 28, he got a win in the B Gas Cycle class with a really fast 118.16 mph. On Apr. 4 at Pomona, he got a double win in the gas ranks: Class A Cycle (103.41 mph) on his 30.50 cubic inch Triumph and Class B Cycle on his 40 cubic inch Triumph. On April 18 at Pomona, he scored four drag wins. In addition to three trophies in the A and B gas classes and the B fuel class, he won top eliminator honors. His times were: A Gas (99.86 mph), B Gas (104.41 mph), and B Fuel (119.04 mph). He simply dominated other older racers like Bud Hare, Ralph Goebel, Bennie Hite, Rich Richards, Tom Glavas, Bob Wareham, and Pat Presetti. A week later, on Apr. 25 at Pomona, it was the same story--domination in the cycle classes. He took three trophy wins: A Gas Class (101.04 mph), B Gas Class (106.41 mph), and B Fuel Class (106.08 mph). He won two classes on May 9 at Pomona: A Gas (98.84 mph) and B Fuel (119.54 mph). On May 16 at Pomona, he notched another top eliminator victory and won in three of the six motorcycle classes. Just another day at the office. In the gas classes he took wins in the A Class (101.20 mph), B Class (107.59 mph), and snagged a win in B Fuel Bike (121.60 mph). Winning trophies was becoming an old hat for the youngster. At this rate, he'd need a separate room at his home just to house his growing collection. At Pomona on May 23, he notched another three win day: A Gas (100.30 mph), B Gas (108.55 mph), and B Fuel (117.18 mph). In the summer months, he didn't have school homework to detract him from what he seemed destined to do--win and keep on winning. On June 6 at Pomona, he took trophies in A Gas (100.00 mph) and B Fuel (121.62 mph). On June 20 at Pomona, he copped another triple win: A Gas (109.79 mph), B Gas (106.07 mph), and B Fuel (118.50 mph). On July 25 at Pomona, he racked up a double win: A Gas (101.03 mph) and B Fuel (117.90 mph). He also began racing in motorcycle oval track races at the Carpinteria Thunder Bowl, where he was a frequent winner. But Sundays were devoted to drag racing. On Oct. 24 at Pomona, he took two wins in the gas classes: A Class (94.08 mph) and B Class (101.03 mph). The next Sunday at Pomona on Oct. 31, he took home three trophies: A Gas Class (96.04 mph), B Gas Class (104.46 mph), and B Fuel Class (108.50 mph). On Nov. 28 at Pomona, he collected two wins in the gas class: Class A (95.00 mph) and Class B (105.00 mph). The B Class time was a new track record. Although most of his drag racing was at Pomona, he also raced at Paradise Mesa, Saugus, and Santa Ana. On Dec. 19 at Santa Ana, he won the 30-50 Gas Cycle class (93.00 mph) and the 40-inch Fuel Cycle class (123.40 mph). He finished the year with another triple win at Pomona on Dec. 26: Class A Gas (96.04 mph), Class B Gas (99.08 mph), and Class B Fuel (118.26 mph). Notes: With all his drag racing wins of the previous two years, newspapers now reported his name as "Bob" rather than "Little Bobby." That was in deference to him now being 15 years old and a high school sophomore. At Pomona on Jan. 23, "Bob" Sir Kegian won the B Fuel Cycle class with a speed of 117.50 mph. On Feb. 13 at Pomona, Bob took a win in Class A Fuel Cycle with 103.42 mph. But 1955 was the year that he would devote more of his time to oval track racing at the Carpinteria Thunder Bowl. He didn't stop drag racing entirely, but he devoted less time to it. He also did more racing at Southern California tracks other than Pomona. At Santa Ana on Feb. 20, he won in the 30-50 Fuel Cycle class with a speed of 114.95 mph. On Mar. 6 at Santa Ana, he took a win in the 30-50 Fuel Bike Class with 117.93 mph. Back at Pomona on March 13, he won A Fuel (108.45 mph) and B Fuel (119.40 mph) and took top eliminator. On Mar. 20 at Pomona, he took trophies in A Fuel (104.61 mph) and B Fuel (117.00 mph). At Santa Ana on May 1, he won the 30-50 Fuel class with 100.00 mph. The next week at Santa Ana, on May 8, he won the 40 Fuel Cycle class with 119.04 mph. He was paired with Jack Ewell's Merc-engined dragster in the finals of top eliminator, but faltered off the line and lost. At Pomona on May 29, he copped A Fuel Cycle (105.20 mph) and B Fuel Cycle (112,50 mph). He also took top eliminator. At Santa Ana on June 12, he won the 40 Fuel Class with 116.27 mph. At Santa Ana on June 26, he turned 120.49 mph to win the 40 Fuel Class. On Sep. 18 at Santa Ana, he took the 61 Fuel Class with 117.64 mph. At Santa Ana on Oct. 16, he took a trophy in the 40 Fuel class with 121.14 mph. Back at Pomona on Nov. 6, he won the B Fuel Class with 118.86. He also beat the Waterworth & Morris A Altered to win top eliminator. Notes: "Big John" Mazmanian is known for having great-looking cars that also ran great. Mazmanian ran a series of gassers and funny cars, all in his trademark Candy Apple Red. Big John's first funny car was a stunner. The '68 Barracuda featured deep shades of Candy Apple Red with real gold leaf lettering. Rich Siroonian, Big John's nephew, drove the beauty. The team took its biggest win at the 1968 Manufacturer's Funny Car Championships at Orange County, defeating Don Schumacher in the final. Siroonian's best times in the car were 7.30 at 192. - BS | Multi-page build-up car feature in 1/69 Car Craft reported chassis by Ron Scrima's exhibition Engineering, motor to be 392" early hemi, and trans as B&M TorqueFlite. Photos confirm it was an early hemi, though there were suggestions they might switch to a later 426. - RT | Confirmed 7.48 at OCIR. | This car made its debuted late in the year, making one of its first appearances at Irwindale in early September for a best-of-three match race against Charlie Allen. Unfortunately, new car blues held Siroonian back. In the first round, all he was able to run was 9.07/160.71, and it wasn't enough to beat Allen's Dart at 8.02/157. In the second race, the 'Cuda blew a rear end and slowed to 9.23/106.76 in a loss to Allen's 7.87/183. On September 21, Siroonian was at OCIR for a Funny Car vs Fuel Altereds race. Rich's 8.10/186.32 in the first round, lost to Glenn Way's 7.87/196 in the "Groundshakers" car. He beat a tire-smoking Willie Borsch in his second round race with an 8.11/187.10. In the third race, his transmission let go, and he lost to Sush Matsubara. The following week (September 28), he was at Irwindale for a Funny Car vs Top Gas Dragster event. Rich's 7.96/185.56 beat Kenny Ellis' 8.00/189 in the first round, but in round two, he smoked the tires to an 8.29/183.28 loss to Jack Jones' 7.72/194. In his third race, he ran the Low ET of the meet for Funny Cars, but his 7.90/184.80 wasn't enough to beat Bob Muravez's 7.85/193 in the "Freight Train." Siroonian drove the car to its best time and speed (up to this point) at OCIR on October 5. He lost to Art Ward in round one, when he shut off, but he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.75/192.30 to beat Ronnie Runyan in round two. |

Notes: Early in '69, until the Danny Ongais-Mickey Thompson combo jelled, there were calling Rich Siroonian the killer of the funny cars. Like most other Funny Car drivers, he started the year at the Irwindale New Year's Day meet, where he qualified second with a 7.62 behind Don Schumacher's 7.50. He got crossed-up in the first round and shut down to 11.85, losing Norm Weekly's 8.10/192. Another first-round loss came at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 before losing to Dave Beebe in the "Super Chief" in the first round. At Pomona on February 2 for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 with an 8.22/185.11 and a first-round 8.45 beat Ed Schartman's quicker 8.39. In the second round, an 8.10 beat Schumacher's 8.12. But in the semifinal, both he and Ray Alley ran 8.27 (Siroonian at 184.42), with Alley winning. He won the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9 after qualifying second with a 7.47/196.50 (Top Speed)behind Charlie Allen's 7.46/191. He got some "revenge" over Alley in the opening round, where his 7.55/193.12 topped Alley. He then improved to 7.44/19.80 in the semifinal to beat Dale Armstrong, driving Gary Crane's ailing Javelin. In the final, he met and defeated Schumacher's 7.62/192 with a 7.39/195.22. Another win came at an eight-car show at Lions on February 22. After qualifying second with a 7.72 behind Randy Walls' 7.70, Rich then beat Leroy Hales in the first round before running 7.71/188.28 in the semifinal over Jim Liberman's 7.82/185, and in the final, a 7.70/189.07 beat Alley. He seemed to have a habit of qualifying second, and at Bakersfield on March 2, his 7.73 qualified behind Danny Ongais' 7.63 in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. His opening round 8.50/181.45 beat alternate Hale's 9.06/165, and a semifinal 8.23/189.07 advanced when Dick Loehr broke. He met Ongais in the final. Danny ran a 7.56/193 Low ET of the meet to stop Rich's 7.74/192.71. At Riverside on March 16 for the HRM Championships, a 7.73 qualified Rich #5, and he beat Rusty Delling in the first round, with a speed of 191.89. He broke and could not make the second round. On March 29, for the final OCIR All-Pro event, he ran a first-round 7.62/193.80 over Gordon Mineo, but Charlie Allen's 7.62/191 stopped his 7.68/192.70 in the semis. Irwindale held an eight-car show on April 13, and a 7.58/191.88 (Top Speed) qualified the 'Cuda #2 behind Ongais' 7.48. In the first round, Mike Van Sant fouled against him, and Rich still ran a 7.64/190.66. In the semifinal, against Steve Bovan, it was his turn to foul. On May 3 at the OCIR Manufacturer's Funny Car Open, he qualified #1 for the Mopar team with a 7.68/190.26 (third overall). Ongais' 7.55/192 beat his 7.61/194.80 in the first race, and not only did he foul in his second race against Jim Ward's Javelin, but he blew his trans as well. In his third race, an 8.71/168.53 beat Mike Van Sant. For the title, it was Ongais against Siroonian, but the 'Cuda broke another transmission, and Danny's 7.88/188 won. On May 10, Lions held an eight-car show, and Rich's 7.70 (Low ET) qualified #1. He singled with a 7.71/189.43 in the first round when Bob Hightower shut down in Doug Thorley's Javelin. He shut down with no oil pressure against Gordon Mineo in the semifinal. Another win came his way on May 17 over an eight-car field at Irwindale. A first-round 7.74/192.30 beat Walls' 7.81/180, and a semifinal 7.70/195.22 beat Johnny Wright's ailing "Hellfire "Corvette. In the final, Rich's 7.79/190.26 beat low qualifier Beebe's quicker 7.77/196. Shortly after this, the team revamped the car with a Keith Black 426 installed farther back in the chassis, replacing the 392. |

Notes: Qualified fifth at NHRA Ontario 11/21/70 at 7.120/194.80. Ran 6.88 at Fremont. | At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Rich ran 7.62 to qualify #6. A first-round 7.93 lost to Larry Reyes' 7.54 in the "Hawaiian." On February 14 he was at Lions where 30 cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. Siroonian qualified, but in the first round, his 7.55/171.10 lost to Don Prudhomme's 7.18/208.81. A few days later (February 22), while attempting to qualify for the third OCIR All-Pro race, a front tire blew out at speed. The 'Cuda was demolished when it hit a light pole. Rich was OK, but the car was toast. Soon after this Rich was called away by uncle Sam and did a tour of duty. During that time Arnie Behling drove for car owner John Mazmanian. Siroonian was back behind the wheel at NHRA's Division 7 race at OCIR on September 19. He beat a tire smoking Dave Beebe in the first round, with a 7.24 while a strong 7.04/204.68 beat Bob McFarland in the semifinals. This set up a final round race with Ray Alley. Rich got the victory with a 7.06/207.85. At Fremont's Fall Championships on September 26, he did pretty well, becoming the first Funny Car to run a "six" at Fremont with a 6.98 and beating Alley in the semifinals. He won the race by beating Mike Snively's 7.07/210 in the final with track records of 6.86/214.28. The track record going into this race was 7.11 by Ed McCulloch. Rich lost to Gene Conway in the second round at OCIR on October 10 for the East/West Funny Car Championships. He beat Randy Walls' 7.23/206 with a 7.23/207.85, but his second round 7.31/200.44 lost to Conway's 7.09/201. | Best NHRA ET was 7.169/190.67. Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/70 |

Notes: January 1971: John Mazmanian clocked the first official, backed-up 220-mph run in a Funny Car at Orange County Int'l Raceway (OCIR). - NHRA | Rich was at OCIR for its opening All-Pro race. He had problems in the first round, and his 8.80 lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn's 7.08. Shortly after that, he was at Lions for the first AHRA Grand American race. Over 30 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Siroonian easily made the show and his opening round 6.78/215.82 beat Tom Hoover. But in round two, he was disqualified for crossing the centerline while racing Gene Snow. On January 24, he made history at the second OCIR race. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.85. In the first round his 6.77/220.58 (first 220 mph FC) beat Jake Johnston. In the semifinals, he ran 6.81/213.77 to beat Stan Shiroma. He went up against Gene Conway in the final and it was no contest. Rich's 6.83/218.97 won when Conway saw that it was pointless and shut down to 8.22/114. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, John Mazmanian had two cars in the field. Larry Reyes drove the other car and qualified it #4 while Siroonian's 7.19/195.65 got the #8 spot. He improved to 7.03/205.41 in the first round, to beat Don Schumacher, but in round two, his 7.11 lost to Johnston's 7.03. The third OCIR All-Pro race was run on February 13. Rich was there and ran over 220 again, but that wasn’t the big news as Don Prudhomme had blasted over 226! Rich ran well, stopping Dick Rosberg in the "Fighting Irish" car in the first round, with a 6.85/220.04. He beat Dunn in the semifinals with an engine blowing 6.87/221.13, but was unable to return for his final round showing with Prudhomme. The team did not run at the AHRA Winternationals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Siroonian’s 6.95 qualified #1. He then improved to 6.93 (Low ET) before losing to Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker" in the semifinal. Rich shut off to 7.20/168.88 while Condit advanced with a 7.13. They also did not make the trip to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but they were at OCIR the following week (March 27) for the final All-Pro race. Rich’s 6.87/216.86 qualified #2, but in the opening round against Gary Burgin, he had problems and shut down to 11.21/62.32. We need to confirm the 6.64. |
