Notes: The team was at Tulsa on June 9 for a Texas Pro Fuel Circuit race. Twenty-six cars were attempting to qualify, and Simpson's 7.46/216.34 qualified #8. He lasted until the semifinals, where he lost on a piston burning run to Dwight Salisbury. The following week (June 15), they were at Odessa for another Texas Pro Circuit race. This one was an eight-car show, and Watus qualified #1 with a 7.44/213.28, but he fouled against Gary Bailey in the first round. Watus won at Green Valley Raceway on July 20. He beat Harold Wilson in the final with a 7.12/209.78. The "Hunt-Simpson" team set a 7.03 track record in the semifinals. August 4 was not a good day for the team. They were at Tulsa running when a blower exploded in the lights. The resulting fire gave Watus third-degree burns on his arms and right hand. He returned to driving the car on August 18 at Amarillo for the final Texas Pro Fuel Dragster circuit race. Things went well there as he won. John Wiebe fouled against him in the opening round, and in the semifinal, Simpson charged out to a big holeshot and led Buddy Cortines through the traps. He ran George Cox in the final, and George couldn't wait and fouled.

Notes: Simpson was at LaPlace in May for an eight-car show. He set a track record 6.76 in the first round, while beating Brian Budd, and in the semifinals, his 6.80 beat Poy Louie. In the final, he faced Arthur Iglehart, and Arthur fouled, so Watus ran an easy 7.16 for the victory. On May 24, he was at Southland Dragway for the NHRA Division 4 race. Unfortunately, the car lost fire in the opening round, and he had to watch his opponent, Doug Mead, solo into the semifinal. Watus did get credit for setting Top Speed there at 218.00. Watus qualified at the NHRA Springnationals in June, and even though it was a 32-car field, it was a tough field to make with a 6.89 bump. Unfortunately, Watus lost to Dick Rosberg in the first round. He also lost in the first round, at the third NHRA Division 4 race at Oklahoma City on June 21. This time, Buddy Cortines beat him. Dallas held an eight-car Top Fuel show in July, and Simpson's 7.02 qualified #7. He advanced past the first two rounds and into the final when both Jimmy Duppstadt and Preston Davis fouled against him. He lost in the final to Eddie Taylor driving Raymond Austin's car. On August 15, he was back at Oklahoma for an eight-car show, and although he beat Dale Emery in the first round, with a 7.43, he lost a blower and could not run in the semifinal. He didn't race at Indy on September 7 but won an AHRA Grand American at Green Valley, beating Don Cook's 7.07/216 in the final with a 6.87/202.70. Watus qualified #2 with a 7.07 at the NHRA Division 4 final at Amarillo on September 13. He made it all the way to the final in the 16-car show, including a win over Bennie Osborn in the first round, before he lost to Chip Woodall. In October, he qualified #1 with a 6.94 at the second annual Bayou Championships at Southland Dragway, but he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Mike Martini. At the NHRA World Finals, he qualified #12 with a 6.780/214.28 but failed to make the finals. Those were his best NHRA national event times for 1970. | Also Ran 6.86 at LaPlace. - Mike Gagnon
