Notes: This was the former Kuhl and Olson car from '72. The engine he used was the early model hemi that had been run in Jim Dunn's rear-engined Funny Car 'Cuda also in '72. It was a 392 with a Reath 1/4 stroker crank. It now measured 425 cubic inches. The Howards rods held Venolia pistons. Mondello prepared heads were used as well as an Engle cam. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold, and Neil Leffler reworked the blower itself. Enderle injection sat up top. The 225" RCS chassis used 4.10 Mopar gears in the rear. The car was delivered to Clive the weekend before the NHRA Winternationals. | Things didn't go too well at Pomona as the race was rained out twice. Still, the track was in horrible shape, and he qualified #27 in the 32-car field with a 7.249/216.86, but he could not return after the rain delay. The Video link shows Clive racing at Santa Pod 1973. In it, he notes that he ran 217 in the UK. John Durkee worked out of Sid Waterman's shop. Clive returned to run at the NHRA Supernationals. He ran 6.245/229.00 but ended up as the third alternate. The Video Link shows Clive racing Tony Nancy in the UK in 1973.

Notes: Skilton's 6.32/226.13 qualified #12 for the sixteen-car field at the AHRA Winternationals. He fouled against Jerry Ruth in the opening round of eliminations. Clive attempted to qualify the NHRA Pomona Winternationals, but he crashed into the safety net when he could not stop. Clive finished in the middle of the DNQ pack (times not reported). This looks to be a 1973 photo.

Notes: Britain's first rear-engined car. I think this was a British-built car and not an RCS chassis. - Danny White. Clive was in Revolution III during the Don Garlits' visit. He went "6.3" in qualifying. Clive won round one over Gerry Andrews at 6.67 and then upset Peter Crane's 6.03 in round two with a massive holeshot and a 6.37, and followed that with another 6.37/208 to defeat Owen Hayward in the final.

Notes: Clive competed in the US for the '77 season. He lived in Balboa, California, when racing in the states. Clive ran 6.20/241.93 at the PRO race at Beeline, Arizona, on 1/14/77. At the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson, he qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.53. In the opening round, his 6.47/189.06 beat Paul Longenecker and his 6.39 beat Larry Dixon, but his engine broke while winning, and he was unable to run in the semifinals. He attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he failed to make the show (times not available). He was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he advanced past a broken Terry Capp in the first round, and, in round two, beat Frank Bradley. Unfortunately, he lost in the third round. Still, he had run well, hitting a best of 6.03. Skilton lasted until the semifinals at the AHRA Springnationals at Tulsa. He beat Johnny Abbott in the first round, before losing to eventual winner Jeb Allen. On June 5, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.49/205.95. But he hurt his engine in qualifying and was unable to run in the first round. His Donovan was making some power the following week (June 12) at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.095/231.36 qualified #10, and in the first round, his 6.27/209.79 beat a wheelstanding Tony Ceraolo. In round two, he advanced with a 6.57/193.13 when Sid Seeley failed to fire. In the semifinals, he stepped up to 6.08/230.76 in beating Abbott's 6.11/227. This put him into the final against Shirley Muldowney. While you would have thought Shirley would have an easy win, Clive made her work for it. Shirley's 6.11/236 got her the victory over Skilton's 6.15/228.42 runner-up effort. The next week, he attended his first IHRA event, the Springnationals at Bristol. It was supposed to run on June 19, but rain postponed it until June 26. He made a good account of himself, qualifying #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.32/225. But Clive lost to Walt Barbin in the first round. He was the low qualifier at Alamo Dragway on July 3 for the AHRA Nationals with a track record 6.25 at 217.39. It was an eight-car show, and he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Jimmy Edwards. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Clive qualified #9 with a 6.09/236.22. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Muldowney. Skilton smoked the tires to a losing 6.38/195 while Shirley advanced with a 6.11/238. Clive made it all the way to the semifinals at Indy with a fabulous showing. He ran best times of 6.037/236.84 and defeating three competitors before falling to Richard Tharp in a thrilling 6.134/238.09 to 6.150/233.76 decision. Clive qualified on the bump at the World Finals with an even better 6.019/214.28 but lost to Dennis Baca in round one, 6.01/243 to 6.114/231.36. Truly a terrific season and one that brought an international flavor to the NHRA.
