Notes: Smart qualified #10 at the NHRA Winternationals at 5.945/243.90. A first-round 5.99/210 lost to Dave Settles' 5.90/242.58. At the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals, a career-best of 5.749/247.25, qualified #3. In the first round, a 5.814/245.23 just nipped Dick LaHaie's 5.92/234. In the second round, he upset Richard Tharp with a 5.875/245.90, beating the Candies and Hughes driver's 5.91/243. A 5.937/239.99 beat Butch Osmon's 6.01/239 in the Jim and Allison Lee car in the semifinal. In the final, he met Shirley Muldowney, and his good 5.896/245.23 still lost to the lady's 5.81/247. He went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals on March 22 and qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.92 (Low ET) at 243. A first-round 5.98/238 beat Mark Oswald (6.14/230), and in the semis, a 6.05/243 beat Jeb Allen (6.39/209). He broke in the final against Richard Tharp, resulting in another runner-up finish. In April, he raced at Green Valley for the NHRA Western Regional points race. A 6.80/231.36 qualified #5 in the eight-car show and a tire-smoking 6.38/233.76 loss to Muldowney in the first round, gave Smart nothing more than Top Speed of the meet. It was on to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where again he set Top Speed of the meet at 243.90 at 5.829 in qualifying #3. He got past the first-round with a 5.847/241.93 to beat Frank Bradley's 5.94/236, but he broke against Terry Capp in the semifinal. On May 3, he set Low ET at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am race. A first-round 5.77/247.25 got the mark in a win over Osmon (6.07/231). In the semifinal, a quicker 5.87/243.90 lost to Oswald's 5.92/242. He ran at Bristol on May 17 for the IHRA Springnationals, where his 5.90/245.23 just made the bump in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts and could not run, allowing alternate Mike Tarter into the show. Later in May, at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he qualified #5 in the eight-car field at 5.890/246.57 and beat low qualifier David Pace in the first round, with a 5.91/243.90. In the semis, he smoked the tires to a 6.11/245.23 and lost to Capp's 6.06/237. He again ran well at the NHRA Springnationals, where a 5.884/242.58 qualified #2, but Osmon put him on the trailer in the first round, with a slight holeshot aided 6.124/229.9 to his 6.115/230.17. The race was a theoretical dead heat - .000 seconds! Jody qualified #3 at Englishtown with a 5.781/248.61. In round one, he beat Shirley Muldowney, 5.822/245.23 to 5.882/234.24, but lost to Gary Beck in round two, 5.80/238 to 5.945/243.24. He was the first alternate at the Molson Grandnationals at 5.919/241.93. At Indy, he set a personal best elapsed time with a #7 qualifying 5.738 at 247.25. Billy Williams upset him in round one, however, 5.89/243 to 5.956/246.57. He qualified #7 at Fremont as well, hitting 5.771/242.58. In round one, he beat Doug Kerhulas, 5.79/245.90 to 5.84/241, but broke against Jeb Allen in round two. Jody just missed the field at the NHRA World Finals. His 5.914/243.24 was the second alternate. Where did Smart run 249.30?

Notes: National Dragster ad said he was number 3 in NHRA, ran 250 several times, and the best was 5.575/257.87. Smart had one of the best top-ending cars in '83. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 5.77/251.39 (Top Speed) qualified #2 behind Gary Beck's 5.52. He beat Frank Bradley, Gene Snow, and Jerry Ruth to reach the final with a 5.79 best. He faced Shirley Muldowney, who had run a best of 5.68 during eliminations. In the final, his tires broke loose, and his 5.92/251.39 (again!) finished runner-up to Shirley's 5.70/249. He was at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.77/250.69 qualified #8. In round one, Jody's 5.79/249.30 beat Doug Kerhulas' 5.87/235, but in round two, his 5.81/247.93 lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.72/248. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals held at Atlanta Dragway. It was an eight-car show, and Smart qualified #6, setting Top Speed of the Meet at 254.95. Unfortunately, the car broke in the first round, advancing Muldowney into round two on a single. The following week (April 24), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was held over another week due to rain and was run on May 1. For Smart, it was worth the wait. He qualified #2 with a 5.64/254.23 (Top Speed) behind Richard Tharp's 5.59. These two would work their way into the final. In the final, Jody's 5.66/253.52 got the victory over Tharp's 5.75. It made up for the week's delay. On May 22, he was in another IHRA final, this time at Norwalk for the World Nationals. Jody had set Low ET at 5.62, but he lost to Joe Amato in the final. Baton Rouge was the next stop for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Smart qualified #2 with a strong 5.60/251.39, but he lost to eventual winner Larry Minor in the opening round. He qualified #6 in Bristol's eight-car field for the IHRA Springnationals on June 5. But there, he lost to Tharp in round one. He got Top Speed of the Meet again at the NHRA Springnationals the following week (June 12). There, his 5.67/252.10 (Top Speed) qualified #3. A first-round 5.77/250.00 beat Amato's 5.83/243, but an off-pace 6.13/247.93 in round two lost to Snow's 5.82/243. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another eight-car show, and he qualified #3 and made his way into the final by beating Muldowney's 5.86 with a 5.85 and getting a solo in the semifinals when Tharp threw a rod on his burnout. He faced Amato in the final, but Smart smoked the tires, and his 5.90/252.10 finished runner-up to Amato's 5.68/239. He was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals the following week, where he again claimed the Top Speed honors. A 5.70/249.30 qualified #2, and he got an easy single in the first round, when John Davis broke. But in the semifinals, Amato stopped him for the second week in a row. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.85/250.00. That set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Tharp. Jody advanced in their race with a 5.83/251.39 when Tharp shut off with problems. In the second round, he improved to 5.74/251.39 in beating Muldowney's 5.87/241. In the semifinals, Kalitta broke, and Jody's 5.73/252.80 (Top Speed) advanced. Once again, he was up against Amato, and once again, he lost. This time, he smoked the tires to 6.01/243.90 to lose to Joe's 5.59/250. Everything fell into place at the NHRA Mile High Nationals on July 30. Sixteen Top Fuel cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car field, and Smart qualified #4 with a 5.86/237.46. He faced alternate Butch Blair in the first round, and his 5.86/241.28 easily covered Blair's 6.45/184. In the semifinals, Kerhulas broke, and Smart soloed with an engine saving 14.30 to move into the final. He faced Bakersfield March Meet winner Danny Danell, who had stopped Muldowney for that title earlier in the year. Notes: Photo from Indy 1984. Former Billy Meyer 82 Pontiac Firebird. At Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals on August 26, Smart qualified #11 with a 6.01/229.99. He failed to reach the finals, but it was still a good outing for the newcomer to the Funny Car ranks. Jody made his NHRA Funny Car debut at Indy for the US Nationals. He did pretty well, qualifying #6 with a 5.78/256.41. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to eventual winner Jim Head. A week later he was at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals where he qualified #2, but lost early.

Notes: Jody ran 5.86/256.84 to qualify #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He might have qualified higher, but he had a blower explosion on his last attempt. He lost to John Force in the opening round of eliminations. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.773/247.93 qualified #7. A off-pace 7.35/116.36 in the opening round lost to John Collins. The following week (March 24), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field but lost in round one. In April, he was one of twenty FC drivers attempting to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 5.99/246.44 qualified #13. In round one, he improved to 5.95/224.32 to beat John Force's 6.01/251. He got a little quicker in round two with a 5.92/241.41, but it wasn't enough to beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.80/249. Best NHRA national event times for 1985 were 5.773 at Gainesville and 256.84 at Pomona Winters. Did Jody run 5.68/258.62 away from the NHRA trail this year?
