Notes: Paul was driving the "Fireball Vega" in Jan at Miami-Hollywood's Funny Car Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.68/207 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he reset the track record with a 6.65 at 219 to defeat Cliff Brown. He got crossed up in the second round and lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman, but Jim blew his engine, so Smith got back into the show on the "break rule." This time, eventual winner Ron Colson, in the "Chi-Town Hustler," beat his 6.88/214.79 in the semifinal with a 6.67/216. Paul did not drive this car on the NHRA national event trail, but he drove Fred Wells' Charger at several events. |

Notes: Won Division 2 title in 1973. He flipped at Suffolk, Virginia. | This is a former Gene Snow, Logghe Brothers built car that was sold to owner Fred Wells in the Winter of 1972/73. After repainting and lettering, it made its first appearance as the "Sir Wells" Charger at the 1973 Gatornationals. Paul missed the qualified show but was the first alternate, running 6.61/209.30. He was inserted into the field after Butch Maas, who qualified 7th, had a bad fire in the Mickey Thompson Grand-Am and couldn't return for eliminations. Paul lost to Gene Snow in that first-round pairing when his up-in-smoke 7.24/193.96 pass was no match for the Snowman's 6.75/209.30 run. - Tom Nagy | Ran 6.68 at Suffolk. - Danny White | 211.25 at Miami-Hollywood 7/29/73 | Best speed was on a 6.626/220.04 DNQ effort at NHRA Indy. |

Notes: The 6.40/223.32 was run by Paul Smith in the 74 Vega at Bristol. The team started the 1974 season with the '73 Vega, which crashed with Machine Gun Kelly at NYNS PRO [8/18 - BP]. That car had run 6.44 at Huntsville and 223.3 at Lebanon Valley before the crash. - Dennis Doubleday | The 74 Vega ran just as well as the 73 machine - the team ran 6.46/221.13 at Lebanon Valley Dragway in 8/74. Paul then qualified on the bump at Indy 9/74 at 6.52/221.67. He lost the first round to Sanair nemesis Kosty Ivanof, 6.48/215 to 6.56/193. Paul rounded out the year as the third alternate at NHRA Ontario at 6.57/189.87. |

Notes: The team started the 1974 season with the 73 Vega, which crashed with Machine Gun Kelly at the NYNS PRO race. That car had run 6.44 at Huntsville and 223.32 at Lebanon Valley before the crash. They then built the 74 Vega to finish the season. - Dennis Doubleday. | Smith started the '74 season on the right foot by winning the Fourth Annual Eastern Funny Car Championships on Jan 5. He won with a 6.65/215.31 in the final after earlier resetting the track record at 6.57. Paul qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.63/216.34. An opening round 6.65/221.13 beat Jim Nicoll, while in round two, his 6.69/214.79 stopped Charlie Therwhanger, who smoked the tires at 6.91/223. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.70/222.77 lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.53. At the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins, Paul qualified on the pole with a 6.66. He ran another 6.66 in the semifinals on an odd-lot single. In the final, he met Harry Hudson driving Dennis Kirkland's car. Harry stepped up to a 6.64 Low ET blast at 213 to take the victory over Smith's 6.74/215.82. Earlier, Paul had run 216.86 to take Top Speed of the Meet honors. On April 28, Smith was at Suffolk for the second Division 2 race. An easy 7.23 advanced past Barry Kelly in round one, but in the semifinals, he had problems and shut off against Larry Fullerton in the "Trojan Horse.†Another runner-up finish came at Englishtown's Memorial Day Championships. Paul ran 6.74/206.42 and 6.57 (Low ET) at 216.34 to reach the final. A final round 6.64/220.04 narrowly lost to Jim Liberman's 6.63/216. Early in June, the "Fireball Vega" team was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. Paul qualified #12 at 6.65/189.87, and he showed just how well he could drive when in the first round, his 7.00/214.28 beat Ed McCulloch's quicker 6.84. He advanced past round two with a 7.21/193 when John Schumacher had troubles with his Grand Am and shut off. Unfortunately, the car got out of shape in the semifinals, and Smith crossed the centerline, losing to Gene Snow. At the third NHRA Division 2 race at Blaney, Paul had a bit of a snooze in the final, and although he ran Low ET and Top Speed of the meet with a 6.70/217.38, he couldn't catch Shirl Greer's 6.80/204. Still, a runner-up finish wasn't bad. Greer got him again at Bristol during the IHRA Springnationals. Paul qualified #11 and in the first round, his shut off 7.31/124.48 lost to Shirl's 6.61/200. On July 3, he was at Englishtown for its Funny Car Spectacular. Twelve cars showed, and the four lowest ETs advanced into the semifinals. In his first-round race, Smith got out of shape and shut off to a 9.70 that lost to Liberman. We needless to say, his ET failed to advance into the semifinals, but he did run 6.59/216.34 in beating Jake Crimmins in a consolation race. He was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals from July 12/14. Paul’s 6.68/216.86 qualified #14, but in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 7.18/216 that finished second best to Liberman's 6.85. | The team set the track record at 6.62/221.31 at Richmond Dragway on 7/20/74. I saw the record certificate on Facebook (the speed was probably a transposition of 221.13, but that's what the signed cert reads). - Dennis Doubleday | The following week (July 25), the "Fireball Vega" was at Maple Grove for its All-American race. Smith’s first-round 6.63/189.47 beat Snow, but he lost to Bill Leavitt in round two. At the Super Stock Nationals held at York US 30, Smith didn't show very well. In the first round, his ailing 12.93 lost to Al Segrini's 6.68. Things went better at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Smith qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.583/215.31. An opening round 6.60/218.97 (Top Speed) beat Doc Halladay's 6.89/210, but a holeshot by Kosty Ivanof in the semifinals took the win. Ivanof's 6.78/215 beat Smith’s quicker 6.71/214.79. Two weeks later was the crash at New York National. |

Notes: Smith debuted his new Monza at the NHRA Gatornationals. On his first qualifying attempt, he ran 6.70. Paul improved to 6.422/208.33 to qualify #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.39/205. He lost a close one in the opening round, where his 6.525/206.42 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.51/200. Paul was at Warner Robins in April for the NHRA Division 2 Opener. He qualified #2 behind Shirl Greer, and these two made their way into the final. The two had a great race, with Greer running 6.40/219 to win over Smith's hard-charging 6.41/229.00 (Top Speed). Not long after this, he was at Englishtown for its Spring Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, Smith smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Pee Wee Wallace. Smith came back out later for a consolation race against Dodger Glenn, driving the "Frantic Ford." Paul ran 6.93/193.96 to beat Glenn's 7.57/188. Paul qualified #15 at Columbus at 6.623/199.11. In round one, he lost to teammate and Division 2 nemesis Greer, 6.469/205.94 to 7.349/118.57. Paul got into the top half of the field at NHRA Englishtown with a 6.450/209.79 that qualified #8. He beat a broken Ron Jackson in round one (12-second shutoff) but crossed the centerline against eventual winner Jim Liberman in round two. The team qualified #7 at NHRA Sanair with a 6.63/218.97, but Paul lost a close one to Bob Pickett in the first round, 6.51/207.37 to 6.61 216.86. The team qualified well at Indy, claiming the #6 spot at 6.292/226.13. Paul lost another close one in round one, however, this time to Dale Pulde, 6.340/211.26 to 6.401/210.28. The team's next and final NHRA national event was the World Finals, where Paul was the fourth alternate at 6.439/217.90. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Notes: Shirl Greer team car. Smith was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He had his roof of the Monza cave in during qualifying. He got it fixed but still failed to make the show (no times but slower than 6.663). Shortly after that, he was at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. His 6.95/157.61 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.37/206 in the "Blue Max" in the opening round. |

Notes: Smith ran two Monzas this year. The Wilson-Franklin-Greer car ran at the Gators and IHRA Miami. Smith was driving the "Entertainer" on May 9 at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 opener. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field and faced low qualifier Dodger Glenn in the first round. Smith had problems and shut down at 8.42, while Dodger advanced with a 6.32. Shortly after that, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. This was another eight-car field, and once again, he qualified #5. This time, Jake Crimmins had qualified #1, and in their first-round race, Smith's 6.49/215.31 lost a close one to Crimmins's 6.48/214. He was in Houston for an eight-car show at the end of May. He qualified #2, making it into the final only to foul against Johnny White. Paul qualified #15 at Columbus at 6.625/207.85. He beat Ed McCullouch in round one, 6.656/196.00 to 11.63, but he lost to Shirl Greer in round two, 6.94/229 to 7.702/158.00. Paul did a huge wheelstand at Englishtown after qualifying #12 at 6.556/206.89. He could not return for the first round. Paul was the 7th alternate at Indy at 6.500/187.89. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. Paul ran at the New England Funny Car Nationals in Epping in September. He lost to eventual winner RC Sherman in round three, 6.25 to Paul's fading 6.94. We need to confirm the 6.19/229.59 times. |

Notes: Paul was the tenth alternate at NHRA Gainesville (times unavailable). At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, his 6.37 (speed unavailable) was the first alternate. Shortly after that, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but his 6.61 in the opening round lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.34. Paul was the 12th alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.37/233.76. That was his last NHRA national event of the season. The listed 6.08 at 237.46 is considerably faster than his other national event times this year. We need to validate. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1979. |

Notes: Smith was driving the "Entertainer" late in the year at Green Valley Raceway in a best-of-three match against Bogie Kell's AA/DA. Paul got out of shape in their first race and shut off, but he returned to run a 5.35 on the 1/8 mile to win the second race. The race ended in a draw as the two never ran the third race. |

Notes: Ran 6.12/234.37 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/80 | Smith had one of his best seasons ever behind the wheel of Larry Coogle's Firebird. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with a 6.06/238.09. A 6.11/229.59 beat a crossed-up Ed McCulloch in the first round. In the second round, he smoked the tires and lost to Dale Pulde. The following week (March 23), Paul was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There, a 6.31/230.76 qualified #1 in the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he lost to Pulde in the first round. He won the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins in April, stopping Billy Meyer, who broke in the final with a 7.05/217.91 (Top Speed). On April 27, Smith was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field that was tough to crack into, as Don Prudhomme, Raymond Beadle, and Dale Pulde, among others, failed to do. But sitting in the top qualifying spot was the "Sting's" track record 6.02 at 238.09. Smith made it to the final by beating a tire-smoking, shutting off Kenny Bernstein with a 6.16/234. In the semifinals, his 6.22 beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." That put him in the final against Meyer. Paul had problems and shut down to an 8.21/108.00, which lost to Billy's 6.66/215. At the rain-postponed IHRA Springnationals, Smith didn't have a very good outing. He qualified last in the eight-car field and a 6.37 in the first round, lost to Roy Harris' 6.30. He won the NHRA Divisional race at Gulfport International on June 1 with a best reported run of 6.56/218.44, and a week later, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.19/230.76 qualified #7. He lost to alternate John Collins in the first round. Paul was at Milan Dragway in July for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.19. He lost to eventual winner Meyer in the first round. Paul won the IHRA Summernationals at Bristol. He qualified #2 with a 6.23/234.37 just behind Meyer's 6.20/221. These two would work their way to the final. Smith started by running 6.48 over Mike Mitchell, and in the semifinals, his 6.42 beat Beadle, who was driving the new Omni-bodied "Blue Max." In the final, Smith's 6.55/221.13 got him and victory over Meyer's 6.65/227. At the NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend, Paul's 6.47/226.70 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Dale Armstrong's 6.21/227. At the PHR Championships, Smith failed to qualify with a 6.37 (third alternate) best. He also lost early at the US 131 Funny Car Nationals in August, where Tom McEwen beat him. Smith was disappointed at Indianapolis, where his best of 6.12/234.37 failed to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals. Photo from 1980 Pop Rods, US 131, Martin, MI. |

Notes: Paul and the LeMaster Bros. later teamed on the Entertainer funny cars. Paul got his Top Fuel drivers license in November at the Snowbird National Open. The eight-car field was too short and Smith qualified #3 with a 7.53/146. In the first round, he was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. |

Notes: Jack Robbins built the car, but sold it to Mickey Winters. Paul drove the car at the second NHRA Division 4 race at State Capitol Dragway on March 22. Only four cars showed and his 7.03/191.89 qualified #1. Another 7.03 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Gary Southern who set Low ET in beating him with a 6.99. |

Notes: Paul's season started with this car late in April at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was only an eight-car field and Smith's 6.13 qualified #6. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round, and shut down against eventual winner Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's Arrow. He also qualified #6 at Rockingham's eight-car show for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Sadly, he once again had problems and shut down on the line in the first round, against Kenny Bernstein. Two weeks later (May 17), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.31 qualified on the "bump"(#8). An opening round 6.30 beat Shirl Greer's 6.47 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." In the semifinals, he lost to a quick-leaving Billy Meyer whose 6.48 beat Smith's slightly quicker 6.45. He was at Englishtown for the Night of Thrills race. All ten Funny Cars made two passes with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Paul’s times were not good enough to make the final as a first-round 6.43/226 lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley's 6.08/234 in the "Chi-Town Hustler" and a 7.08/137.82 in his second race lost to John Speelman's 6.55/207. He was back at Englishtown in July for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.10/240.64 qualified #9. Problem was, he hurt some parts on the pass. He ordered new parts to be sent by overnight express. Paul took $4,800 cash to pay for the parts, but he was robbed by two gunmen who stole the money. His first-round opponent, low qualifier Bernstein, loaned the team the parts they needed for their first-round race. In their race, Bernstein’s 6.08/238 beat Paul's 6.17/231.36. Shortly after that, Smith was at Atlanta for a four-car show, but there a first-round 6.53/205 lost to Dale Pulde's 6.33/230. On July 26, he was at Atlanta again for the NHRA Eastern Regional race. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.42/229.59. But more bad luck stepped in when his 'chute released in the first round, against Roy Harris. Early in August, he stopped off at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #7 and an opening round 6.50 upset Bernstein at 6.70.
