Notes: Smith set Low ET while qualifying #1 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with an 8.25/157.61. In the opening round of eliminations, the car bogged badly, and his 8.72/157.89 lost to Harry Del Pretre's similar 8.72.

Notes: Smith was at Milan, Michigan, on July 22 for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He was running well, but he lost to Bobby Yowell in the semifinal. At the post-race inspection, Yowell's car was found to have been running a nitrous system and was thrown out. Smith was reinstated for the final against Warren Johnson. In the final, his 8.35/163.93 fell to WJ's 8.21/164.

Notes: First national event seven-second run with a 7.999/172.41 at IHRA Rockingham. Smith was the first member of the Holley Seven-Second club with his 7.99 at Rockingham on 4/20/80. - Danny White | This car became the IHRA's first seven-second Pro Stocker with a 7.99 clocked at the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals at Rockingham, NC, on Sunday, April 20, 1980. - Bret Kepner | Smith changed engine builders for '80. Now he had Jon Kaase preparing his motors which ranged in size from 527 to 652. The engine size most commonly used was the 588. Started the season by qualifying #1 at the IHRA Winternationals with an 8.05/172.41. The times were good enough for Low ET and Top Speed, with the speed being a new IHRA record. Unfortunately, he failed to make the finals. Rickie was again the #1 qualifier at the next IHRA event at Rockingham; an 8.08/171 got him the spot. He ran the first seven-second time at a national event when he won his first round with a 7.99 over Billy Ewing. The race was stopped while photos of the historic time on the scoreboards was photographed, and he was congratulated for the feat. An 8.04 in the second round over a fouling Sam Carroll backed up the 7.99 for a new IHRA record. But in the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Ronnie Sox's 8.13/168 with an 8.17/170. Smith made it to the finals at the IHRA Dixie Nationals but had to settle for runner-up to Warren Johnson, a position he would again have at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol on May 18. An 8.19/168.22 qualified second to Johnson's Low ET 8.09. Smith ran a best of 8.14 in the first round to beat Keith Albritten. An 8.19 in round two took out Bob Glidden's 8.37, and a semifinal 8.22 turned back Pat Musi. The two low qualifiers would meet in the final, where Johnson's 8.13/166 beat Rickie's 8.32/164.47. The next stop on the IHRA tour was Milan, Michigan, for the Northern Nationals. Smith's 8.04 in qualifying was the Low ET of the meet, but William Paris's holeshot aided 8.15 in the semifinals stopped his quicker 8.09. He finally got his win on August 3 at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. An 8.17/168.47 qualified #2. He got revenge on Paris by beating him with an 8.22 in the second round. In the semifinal, an 8.30/165.44 beat Roy Hill's 8.59/159. In the final, Don Nicholson fouled away a strong 8.20/167, and Smith motored through to an 8.321/164.83 victory. On August 13, he was in Maryland for the Mountain Motor Nationals. He qualified #7 with an off-pace (for him) 8.29. He picked up a tenth in the first round with an 8.19. An even quicker 8.15/170 in the second round lost to Bill Jenkins' 8.24/165. At the IHRA US Open, Smith again reset the speed record, this time to 174.08 during qualifying, which came with an 8.02 that was good for the #2 spot behind Johnson's 7.91. Both Johnson and Smith made it to the semifinals before losing. Rickie's 8.24/169 lost to Mike Kennedy's 8.25/164. The best times reported for the year were 7.95/175.12. We need to confirm where those took place.

Notes: Raced a new ‘Oak Ridge Boys Ford Fairmont' at the Atlanta Raceway Mountain Motor Challenge on 10/10/81. Lost to a Warren Johnson holeshot in the semis, 7.94 to Rickie's 7.92. | Rickie Smith was having a great season with his Mustang II and in August, he was at Richmond for a best of three match race against Chuck Sneed. On one of his passes, the car blew a rear tire, got out of shape, and slid into Sneed's Camaro. The Mustang then barrel rolled down the track. The car was history, but Smith was unhurt. He needed a car to stay in the IHRA points race and Jon Kaase recommended he get in contact Wally Balchunas. Wally had a B/FX Fairmont. Kaase was impressed enough with the car, so Smith made a deal to use it to finish out the IHRA season. Smith installed the Mustang's Kaase-built 588 Boss powertrain into the Fairmont. The car needed a different hood as the car had been using a 351 Cleveland engine before and a quick call to Bob Glidden got him a new hood. The debut with the car came at Rockingham on September 13 for the IHRA US Open. In the first round, only two cars ran in the sevens, Smith (7.93/173.74) and Sox (7.91/172). But these two would meet in the second round where eventual winner Sox’s 7.87 beat Smith's out of shape 8.97.

Notes: "My partner back then was a neighbor of mine by the name of Keith Fowler, who was a big Country music promoter at the time - he had Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, and the Oak Ridge Boys under contract. He had originally put his business name "Country Shindig" on our Super Modified car, and when we went to Pro Stock, he put the Oak Ridge Boys on the new car. They were huge stars back then, and they even came out to one of our races, which really helped us promote ourselves. We ran Loretta Lynn's name on the car for a while, too, which was a real popular deal. - Rickie Smith (courtesy Competitionplus.com) | It took a couple of years, but by 1980, Rickie Smith had his Boss 429 combination worked out. Way back in '78, he had opened some eyes when he set Low ET at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with an 8.25. He fell off to a losing 8.72 in the first round, of eliminations, and many called it a fluke. In '80, he was low qualifier at quite a few IHRA races. He was also the first to run a 7-second ET under IHRA rules with a 7.99 run in the first round, of competition at Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships. He improved even more in '81. He started the season at a four-car show in Englishtown in March. Rickie ran times of 8.09/169.81 and 7.99/172.08 to beat Frank Iaconio and Pat Musi. He faced Ray Allen, who was driving Bill Jenkins' Camaro in the final, and a holeshot aided 7.98/172.08 beat Allen's 7.91/171 for the victory. He won the Atmore IHRA series race with a final round 5.00/139.53 over William Parris' 5.33/133. On March 15, he was at Piedmont for a best-of-three-match race against Mike Kennedy. Rickie made a warm-up run and reset the track record to 5.11. He then ran 5.13 in the first race to beat Kennedy's 5.23, and another 5.11 beat the Camaro's 5.19 to win the match two straight. At IHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Darlington, Smith ran 8.07/172.41 to qualify #5 in the sixteen-car field. The top four cars in qualifying were all in the sevens. Smith joined that group with an opening-round 7.99/171 that beat Gary Duckworth. He started to earn his nickname "Tricky Rickie" with a holeshot 8.07/171 in the second round that beat low qualifier Don Nicholson's 7.86/175. His 7.96/173 beat Ronnie Sox's 8.04/173 in Dean Thompson's new Mustang in the semifinals. That put him into the final against Roy Hill. The Mopar driver's times were nowhere near what Smith was running, and it showed in the final where Smith saved his best for last and ran 7.91/174 to beat Hill's 8.44/134. The next IHRA event was the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, held early in May. Smith ran 7.85/176.81 to qualify #2 behind Nicholson's 7.82/176. These two would end up meeting in the final. Rickie had a tough race against Warren Johnson in the semifinals, where Smith's 7.96/173.74 beat WJ's 8.05/173 in Jerome Bradford's Monte Carlo. Rickie lost a motor in the final and slowed to an 8.50/119.02 in a runner-up finish to Nicholson's 7.90/175. Two weeks after that, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 7.91/173.74 qualified #1 and a first-round 7.99 advanced. He beat Chuck Sneed in round two with a 7.94 to move into the semifinals. His competition there was Harold Denton, who had just bought Nicholson's Mustang. Not only had he acquired the car, but "Dyno Don" also was there helping him get used to the car. Denton pulled a huge holeshot that saw his 8.11 beat Smith's quicker 8.03. At the IHRA World Nationals, Rickie lost to WJ in the semifinals.

Notes: Rickie was the #4 qualifier at the first 500-inch pro stock race at the Winters, running 7.942/173.07. He was the #6 qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.896/173.74. | Rickie ran well at the NHRA Winternationals. After qualifying #4, he ran an off-pace 8.21/173.07 that beat Terry Sherrill's quicker 8.13/168. He advanced past a fouling John Brumley in round two with a 7.96/170.77 before losing to Frank Iaconio's 7.86/173 to his 7.95/172.08 in the semifinals. At the Gatornationals, Rickie qualified sixth with a 7.93/173.41 but had problems and could not run. He did not compete at the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. His 500 cubic inch program wasn't as successful as his IHRA set-up, but he still qualified in the top half of the field at the NHRA US Nationals with a 7.896. However, Joe Lepone got him in round one, when Rickie fouled (but he did run a booming 175.09 mph in the loss). Those were Rickie's best NHRA national event times.

Notes: After qualifying third with a 7.85 at the IHRA Winternationals, he lost in the first round. Smith ran a best of 7.89 on the way to a runner-up finish to Warren Johnson at the IHRA Pro-Am race at Rockingham on May 2. Both he and WJ ran 7.92 in the final. Rickie's next good showing was on June 20 at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. There he stopped Ronnie Sox in the final with a 7.76/179 to Sox's 7.87/175. His 7.76 was Low ET and he also had Top Speed at a track record 181.08. Another win came at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals beating WJ in the final while again setting Top Speed, this time at 176.47. And at the IHRA Northern Nationals, while he didn't make the final, he again set Top Speed at 181. - Rick Howard | Bubba Corzine told me he thought Rickie went mid 7.60s in 1982. Notes: The last Pro Stock car Don Hardy built. Considering the relatively short time Rickie had been racing in Pro Stock (since mid-1979), he was quite competitive in the NHRA ranks. He had been racing in IHRA for years in the Super Modified class. He dominated the class so much with his Maverick that they abandoned it. Entering into Pro Stock, he stayed with IHRA and was the first to run a "7" there. He was the '82 IHRA P/S World Champ. NHRA was a whole new ball game for him. Smith switched from his trusty Mustang to this all-new T-Bird for '83. It was a good-looking ride, and it caught the eyes of some crooks as it was stolen just before the NHRA Winternationals. Rickie got it back and repaired the vandalized car, but it was ready for eliminations. Smith qualified #6 with a 7.887/177.51. He had one of three Fords that qualified. In the opening round, his 7.91/176.47 beat Gordie Rivera's 8.01/170. In the second round, eventual winner Frank Iaconio ran 7.79/175 to beat his 7.96/173.41. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, the same three Fords qualified for the show (Bob Glidden, Roy Hill, and Smith). Smith was the quickest of the group at 7.74/176.81, which put him #6 overall. A 7.76/175.43 in the opening round beat Roy Hill's 7.99/159. He had a very close race with Reid Whisnant in round two, where both ran 7.75 (Smith at 175.43), but Rickie got the win. Once again, Iaconio had his number, and in the semifinal, the Camaro's 7.68/181 put the T-Bird's 7.80/177.51 on the trailer. Things didn't go too well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and Smith's 7.95/174.41 best was the fourth alternate. It was unusual that no Fords qualified there. Smith was busy running the IHRA Circuit as well, and after winning two IHRA races with the big engine combination, he showed up at Baton Rouge at the end of May for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. This was another eight-car field, and this time his 7.90/174.75 qualified on the "bump." Once again, the same three Fords qualified for the show. Unfortunately, Rickie didn't hang around long as in the first round, Glidden's 7.87/176 beat his 7.96/172.74. He won an IHRA race at Bristol the following week before returning to NHRA for its Springnationals in Columbus. A 7.85/174.75 qualified #6, but in round one, his 7.89/173.07 fell to Whisnant's Mopar at 7.83/171. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, he fell back a bit in qualifying. His 7.95/175.09 qualified #11, and he went out in the first round, where his fouling 8.00/174.41 lost to Glidden's 7.79/177. He did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, but he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. This was an eight-car show, and he qualified on the "bump" with a 7.88/175.09. Smith beat Don Campanello in the opening round before fouling against Warren Johnson in the semifinal. He shut down to 8.09/141.73 in the loss. He bypassed the NHRA Northstar Nationals but was one of almost 50 Pro Stock drivers attempting to qualify at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. His 7.84/177.16 qualified #7. In round one, he improved to 7.82/176.81 to defeat Dave Hutchens' 7.95/174. In round two, his 7.91/176.47 fell to Iaconio's 7.77/177. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Golden Gate Nationals held at Fremont early in October. Almost everyone that qualified for the tough eight-car fields ran personal bests. Smith found himself on the "bump" with a 7.78/178.57. In the first round, he upset WJ with a 7.80/178.71 that beat the Cutlass' 7.88/174. In the semifinal, he fouled away a 7.83 against Lee Shepherd, who won with a 7.70/176. The NHRA's season came to a close at OCIR for the World Finals. Smith qualified #11 there with a 7.79/177.51. But his day was cut short in the first round, where WJ beat him. Still, he finished seventh in the points for his first full season in NHRA competition. That was ahead of many drivers that had been running a lot longer in the class. Rickie's best times came from Gainesville and Fremont at 7.745/178.71, respectively.

Notes: Rickie qualified second with a 7.63/182.92 at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He went on to win, beating Lee Shepherd in the final. Another win came at the IHRA World Nationals, this time dropping Warren Johnson in the final. A 7.80/177 qualified Rickie second at the IHRA Springnats, and he went on to win over Shepherd in the final. The winning continued with a victory at the MIR Mountain Motor Nats over Johnny Downey. At the IHRA Fallnationals, Smith qualified fourth with a 7.70/181.08, but he lost to a Warren Johnson holeshot 7.70 in the semifinals that beat Rickie's 7.65. Another win over Shepherd came on September 11 at the IHRA US Open. Rickie qualified #4 with a 7.73/180.72. He had a burndown with Johnson in the semifinals that saw Smith advance when Johnson had problems on his run and slowed. Rickie was sharp on the tree in the final, and his 7.73/181.45 held off Shepherd's 7.71/180 for the win. Going into Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals, Smith held a slight points lead over Shepherd. He qualified #4 with a 7.70/181.08, and he beat Harold Robinson in round one, but in the semifinals, his late 7.65 lost to Johnson's 7.70. Shepherd went on to win, taking the IHRA Pro Stock championship. Smith finished second in points on the IHRA tour. In August, Rickie set the MIR track record at 7.70 during the Mountain Motor Nationals. Photo from Orange County CA, 1983. The last Pro Stock car Don Hardy built.

Notes: Ran NHRA with Motorcraft sponsorship, but under his own name in IHRA, ADRA, and match races. Rickie scared many of his long-time Ford fans by purchasing the Scribner brothers Camaro at the end of the '83 season. Not only did he buy the car, but he also sold off some of his engines to the Scribner brothers, who were having a Cougar built for the '84 season. He had a change of heart as the Camaro was soon listed for sale in National Dragster along with a statement," staying with Ford." It was a few more seasons before he made the switch. Smith did not run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he did go to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Forty-six cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Smith failed to make the show with a best of 7.873. In the middle of April, he went to Atlanta at the NHRA Southern Nationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify (last alternate - not times available). Smith could make the "big" Ford engines fly, but these were 500 cubic inches things were something else. He then stopped racing any NHRA National events until the NHRA US Nationals at Indy. There he ended up as the 4th alternate at 7.842/179.28. Not bad when you consider 42 cars were trying to qualify. Still not good if you were used to winning as Rickie was in the IHRA competition. Things went better at the NHRA World Finals, where his 7.811/178.21 qualified #13. He ended any shot Warren Johnson might have had in winning the world championship by dropping him in the opening round of eliminations with a 7.892/174.41 to WJ's off pace 7.97/175. But he came up against Bob Glidden in round two, and his 7.85/176.47 lost to the eventual winner Glidden's 7.68/180. He also competed at the Suffolk Little Guy Nationals in November. Eighteen cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car show, and Smith's 7.88/176.12 (Top Speed) got him the #7 spot. He beat the only other Ford in the show, Roy Hill's, in the first round, with a 7.94/174.75, but his off-pace was 8.13/145.16 in the semifinal loss to the eventual winner Tim Nabor's 7.84/172.
