Notes: Paul was the tenth alternate at NHRA Gainesville (times unavailable). At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, his 6.37 (speed unavailable) was the first alternate. Shortly after that, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but his 6.61 in the opening round lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.34. Paul was the 12th alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.37/233.76. That was his last NHRA national event of the season. Notes: Smith was driving the "Entertainer" late in the year at Green Valley Raceway in a best-of-three match against Bogie Kell's AA/DA. Paul got out of shape in their first race and shut off, but he returned to run a 5.35 on the 1/8 mile to win the second race. The race ended in a draw as the two never ran the third race.

Notes: Ran 6.12/234.37 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/80 | Smith had one of his best seasons ever behind the wheel of Larry Coogle's Firebird. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with a 6.06/238.09. A 6.11/229.59 beat a crossed-up Ed McCulloch in the first round. In the second round, he smoked the tires and lost to Dale Pulde. The following week (March 23), Paul was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There, a 6.31/230.76 qualified #1 in the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he lost to Pulde in the first round. He won the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins in April, stopping Billy Meyer, who broke in the final with a 7.05/217.91 (Top Speed). On April 27, Smith was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field that was tough to crack into, as Don Prudhomme, Raymond Beadle, and Dale Pulde, among others, failed to do. But sitting in the top qualifying spot was the "Sting's" track record 6.02 at 238.09. Smith made it to the final by beating a tire-smoking, shutting off Kenny Bernstein with a 6.16/234. In the semifinals, his 6.22 beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." That put him in the final against Meyer. Paul had problems and shut down to an 8.21/108.00, which lost to Billy's 6.66/215. At the rain-postponed IHRA Springnationals, Smith didn't have a very good outing. He qualified last in the eight-car field and a 6.37 in the first round, lost to Roy Harris' 6.30. He won the NHRA Divisional race at Gulfport International on June 1 with a best reported run of 6.56/218.44, and a week later, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.19/230.76 qualified #7. He lost to alternate John Collins in the first round. Paul was at Milan Dragway in July for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.19. He lost to eventual winner Meyer in the first round. Paul won the IHRA Summernationals at Bristol. He qualified #2 with a 6.23/234.37 just behind Meyer's 6.20/221. These two would work their way to the final. Smith started by running 6.48 over Mike Mitchell, and in the semifinals, his 6.42 beat Beadle, who was driving the new Omni-bodied "Blue Max." In the final, Smith's 6.55/221.13 got him and victory over Meyer's 6.65/227. At the NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend, Paul's 6.47/226.70 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Dale Armstrong's 6.21/227. At the PHR Championships, Smith failed to qualify with a 6.37 (third alternate) best. He also lost early at the US 131 Funny Car Nationals in August, where Tom McEwen beat him. Notes: Jack Robbins built the car, but sold it to Mickey Winters. Paul drove the car at the second NHRA Division 4 race at State Capitol Dragway on March 22. Only four cars showed and his 7.03/191.89 qualified #1. Another 7.03 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Gary Southern who set Low ET in beating him with a 6.99.

Notes: Paul's season started with this car late in April at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was only an eight-car field and Smith's 6.13 qualified #6. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round, and shut down against eventual winner Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's Arrow. He also qualified #6 at Rockingham's eight-car show for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Sadly, he once again had problems and shut down on the line in the first round, against Kenny Bernstein. Two weeks later (May 17), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.31 qualified on the "bump"(#8). An opening round 6.30 beat Shirl Greer's 6.47 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." In the semifinals, he lost to a quick-leaving Billy Meyer whose 6.48 beat Smith's slightly quicker 6.45. He was at Englishtown for the Night of Thrills race. All ten Funny Cars made two passes with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Paul’s times were not good enough to make the final as a first-round 6.43/226 lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley's 6.08/234 in the "Chi-Town Hustler" and a 7.08/137.82 in his second race lost to John Speelman's 6.55/207. He was back at Englishtown in July for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.10/240.64 qualified #9. Problem was, he hurt some parts on the pass. He ordered new parts to be sent by overnight express. Paul took $4,800 cash to pay for the parts, but he was robbed by two gunmen who stole the money. His first-round opponent, low qualifier Bernstein, loaned the team the parts they needed for their first-round race. In their race, Bernstein’s 6.08/238 beat Paul's 6.17/231.36. Shortly after that, Smith was at Atlanta for a four-car show, but there a first-round 6.53/205 lost to Dale Pulde's 6.33/230. On July 26, he was at Atlanta again for the NHRA Eastern Regional race. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.42/229.59. But more bad luck stepped in when his 'chute released in the first round, against Roy Harris. Early in August, he stopped off at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #7 and an opening round 6.50 upset Bernstein at 6.70. But even in winning, his luck was not good as the car broke and he was unable to return in the semifinals so Bernstein was reinstated. Pontiac version of the Chevy Citation body. Notes: Pontiac version of the Chevy Citation body. Paul drove this car in Atlanta on April 25 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.09/236.22. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier (5.89) Billy Meyer. Smith improved to 6.05/241.93 to knock Meyer's 6.22/207. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires to a 12.26 loss to Raymond Beadle's 5.93 in the semifinals. He qualified on the "bump" at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.14 but lost in the opening round.

Notes: Paul started the year in the Jerome Bradford Corvette, which was destroyed in Gainesville. Smith was driving the "Custom Body" Daytona at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.21/233 qualified #10, and although he improved to 6.00/223 in the opening round, he lost to Mark Oswald's 5.92/233 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. In early June, he was still driving this car at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #14 with a 5.96/243. But in the opening round, he fouled against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Shortly after that, he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, where his 6.13 qualified #8. Unfortunately, he lost early. It gets confusing at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals as the car was now a Camaro, and "Custom Body" was still listed in the entry sheet. Nevertheless, his 5.98/238.09 qualified #13, and a 6.12/215.31 fell in the first round to Don Prudhomme's 5.87/246. Was the Camaro a typo? Because at Englishtown, the "Custom Body car was definitely a Daytona as pictures from the event show. He ran 5.887 to qualify #13 for the NHRA Summernationals. Smith lost to Kenny Bernstein in the first round. Paul did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He definitely was in the Daytona by Brainerd (and PHR Martin, as evidenced in the photo). He qualified #14 at Brainerd at 6.038/243.24 but fell off to a 6.77/130 that lost to Frank Hawley in round one. AKA Utica Flash. Danny saw Smith run. Formerly listed 5.91/252.10, but we need to validate the car in which Paul ran those times.

Notes: Paul came out with Jerome's Corvette at Gainesville but destroyed it, running 6.113/252.10. He then ran at Columbus (#13 at 5.989/238.09, with a first-round loss to Don Prudhomme, 5.87/246 to 6.125/215). He qualified #13 at Englishtown as well at 5.887/250.69 with a first-round loss to Kenny Bernstein, 5.84/238 to 5.985/247.93. His last NHRA national event of the year was Brainerd in August, but he was driving the Custom Body car there. The question is: whose car was Paul driving at Columbus and Englishtown? Notes: Smith was driving for Dunlap for the first time in Jan at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.11/248.61, but his blower exploded in the lights in the first round. The car caught fire and destroyed the Tempo body, but Paul was OK. He had run 6.23/216.86 and won his race with Rick Johnson driving the "Hawaiian." The team made repairs and made it to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.951/244.69 qualified #13. Unfortunately, he lost to Ed McCulloch in the opening round, 5.94/249 to 8.06/104. Smith was at Green Valley Raceway for an eight-car show early in March. In the first round, his 6.16/238.72 lost to Gary Cochran's 6.11/226. A week later (March 10), he won over an eight-car field at Atlanta Dragway. He qualified #3 with a 5.86/247.93. Tom Hoover smoked the tires and shut off against him in round one, and Smith advanced with a 6.45/188.67. Rick Johnson, driving the "Hawaiian," also overpowered the track in the semifinal, and Paul won with an easy 6.36/220.58. In the final, he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" car. For the third time, his competition smoked the tires against him. Paul's 6.01/240.64 got the victory over Mark's tire frying 9.09/94. Things didn't go so well for the NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville. Twenty-two cars had been shown, and Paul was the second alternate at 5.996/232.07. Notes: Smith finished runner-up to John Force at the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza. He lost traction and fell off to 7.36/125.87 to lose to John's 6.29/229.88. Paul earlier had run 6.13/216.86 in round one. Smith failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he was the second alternate at 6.17/241.02. He also raced at Rockingham in the first week of May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships but lost early. Soon after, he was at Maple Grove for its Spring FC Nationals. Six cars ran with the two cars with the lowest ETs meeting in the final. Paul's 6.11/198.23 advanced to the final to face Bruce Larson. But in the final, the parachute fell out of the "Custom Body" car on the line, and Larson made a 6.28 solo for the victory. He did not race at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals but at Bristol early in June for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.02/223 in the first round fell to Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/260. He qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.04/241.80. In round one, an off-pace 6.68/139.44 lost to Tom McEwen's 5.92/240. His next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 cars showed, so qualifying was not much of an issue. He ran 5.91/224.21 for the #13 spot in the show. His 6.04/249.03 in the opening round lost to eventual winner Rick Johnson's 5.91/251 in the "Hawaiian." In mid-July, he returned to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 5.83 qualified #14. Unfortunately, he lost to John Collins in round one. He made his third IHRA start of the year at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #9, and in the first round, he beat McEwen with a 5.85/252.52. The car got out of shape against Bernstein in the second round, and Smith got disqualified for crossing the centerline. Paul qualified #15 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.95/248.61. He improved to a 5.85/253.52 in the opening round to beat McEwen's 5.97/243, and an even better 5.80/240.00 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/206 in round two. But he overpowered the track in the semifinals and smoked the tires in a loss to John Collins. His 5.734/255.24 qualified #5 for the NHRA U.S. Nationals at Indy. He slowed to 5.86/254.66 in the first round and lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.82/253. Shortly after, Smith was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.87/244.69. In the first round, both he and Johnson ran 5.75 (Smith at 251.25), but the "Hawaiian" won. The following week (September 22), he was at Englishtown for the U.S. All-Pro FC Championships. His 5.94 in the first round lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.89. He was at Darlington for the IHRA Stroh's Nationals in the first week of October. He qualified #7, and he made his way to the final. A 5.74/247.93 beat a tire-smoking Mark Oswald in round two, and his 5.81/242.58 defeated Billy Meyer in the semifinal. He lost to Bernstein in the final. Paul also ran 5.859/252.52 at IHRA Cincinnati. AKA Utica Flash.

Notes: Paul attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he had all kinds of problems and could only muster a best of 9.133/88.87, obviously failing to qualify. Atlanta hosted an eight-car show in March. Traction was marginal at best. Only one car broke into the "fives" in qualifying. Smith pushed Castronovo's car to a 6.46/191.48 to qualify #6. He won his first-round race with a 12.55 when Kenny Bernstein fouled away a 6.13. In the semifinals, Paul's 6.07/236.22 lost to John Martin's 6.00/243. Paul qualified #6 at 5.906/250.13 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but eliminations were delayed one week and held on the same date as the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. Doc Halladay took his spot on race day at Gainesville. Paul did run at Darlington, qualifying #1 in the eight-car show with a 5.98/247.25. He worked his way into the final, taking the runner-up spot to Dale Pulde. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Paul ran 5.858/232.55 to qualify #6. He beat Ray Higley in the first round, 5.987/222.99 to 6.26/236, before smoking the tires to a 7.552/121.35 that lost to Jim Head in round two. In May, he won the third IHRA race of the season, the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. There he beat Bernstein in the final. There was a light field at Baton Rouge in June for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, so qualifying was easy. Smith ran 6.132/210.32 to qualify #12, but in the first round, his 5.994/230.82 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.76/253. He qualified on the "bump" at the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.330/228.42 and beat Jim Head in round one, 6.096/229.47 to 6.11/243. He lost to Tom McEwen in round two, 5.81/249 to 6.205/194.13. The following week (June 22), he was in St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Paul beat Pat Walsh in the first round before losing to eventual winner Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinals. Paul ran 5.788/249.58 to qualify #9 at NHRA Englishtown. He lost to Mark Oswald in round one, 5.69/258 to 5.885/244.83. Paul was the first alternate at NHRA Indy at 5.883/245.03. At the Keystones, Paul was the #4 qualifier at 5.763/240.89. He beat Pat Walsh in round one, 5.811/247.79 to 10.19/77, but lost to Tim Grose in round two, 5.97/228 to a troubled 12.11/67. Paul was the sixth alternate at Phoenix for the NHRA Fallnationals with a 6.403/223.38 effort. He was the fifth alternate at the NHRA World Finals at 5.918/243.63. AKA Utica Flash. Notes: Paul attempted to qualify Chuck Etchells' car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 5.782/232.55 was good for the first alternate position. He also failed to qualify the car at the Gatornationals with a 6.23/234.37 best. | Paul finally tapped into the 5.60s at the Englishtown K-Mart/Polaroid US All Pro Funny Car Championships on 8/30/87 with a 5.67/247.25 in his 2nd Run against Al Hofmann. Paul would then Run the IHRA US Open Nationals at Rockingham where he set the IHRA Nitro Funny Car Speed record at 274.39. In round 1 Paul would defeat Mike Edstrom but would lose to Doc Halliday in the Semis. In December, Paul ran another 5.60 pass to close out the 1987 Season at Moroso during the Citrus Nationals in his Final Round victory with a 5.65.

Notes: Paul did not drive this car in NHRA competition in 1988 (driving the Etchells Top Fuel car instead). Smith qualified on the "bump" at Bristol in September for the IHRA Fallnationals. In the opening round, he smoked the tires and lost to low qualifier R.C. Sherman. The following week (October 2), he was at the Texas Motorplex for the IHRA Chief Nationals. His 5.40 qualified #5. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, but in round two, his 5.61/234.13 fell to Mark Oswald's 5.41/265. Photo from Columbus 1987.
