Notes: Ran NHRA and some IHRA with Motorcraft sponsorship, but under his own name in IHRA, ADRA, and match races. Beat Lee Shepherd on a holeshot to win IHRA Cincinnati 1984. Smith lost to Frank Iaconio at Englishtown's match race season-opener, but he did run 7.93/173.75. At the IHRA Winternationals in March, Rickie qualified #2 with a 7.56/185.56 and ran 7.56 again and a 7.61 before fouling in the semifinal. At the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Rickie set Top Speed at 188.78 and advanced to the finals only to lose to Lee Shepherd. At the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #9 with a 7.75/180 but lost to Shepherd in the first round. Smith went to the ADRA Grandnationals and qualified #2 with a 7.77. He then set Low ET at 7.66 and won the race over Gary Duckworth in the final. At the IHRA Summernationals, Smith got himself a big win when he met Shepherd in the final and beat him with a holeshot as Rickie's 7.63 beat Lee's later, leaving 7.56. He was runner-up to Shepherd again at Milan in July for the IHRA Northern Nats. Smith qualified #2 with a 7.54/189.07. The speed would have been an IHRA record if Roy Hill hadn't done it earlier. In September at IHRA US Open, Rickie qualified #4 with a 7.55/184.80 and went on to win the race by beating Roy Hill in the final. In IHRA's season-long points chase, Smith finished second to Lee Shepherd.

Notes: Rickie was the strongest running Ford on the IHRA Circuit, and for '85, he wanted to try to make it into more NHRA shows. In January, he went to Firebird Raceway and tested his car during the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. Rickie's best was 7.78/178. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he just made the field, running 7.77/179.64 for the "bump spot." He did OK in the first round, where he stepped up to a quick-leaving 7.71/178.64, beating Ronnie Manchester's quicker 7.69/179. In the second round, his 7.75/176.26 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.69/179. He qualified #11 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.74/180.36, but in the first round, he shut down early to 8.92/112.78 and lost to Butch Leal's 7.63/178. Smith was one of four Fords to qualify at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. 32 cars attempted to make the field, and Rickie's 7.82/177.86 qualified #10. He shaved the light too close and fouled in the first round, slowing to 8.04 in a loss to Leal's 7.74. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 7.76/180.36 was good for the first alternate. He also failed to make the show at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 7.82/177.16 was the sixth alternate, and in Canada for the Grandnationals, where he was the first alternate with a best of 7.72/179.64. Things went better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #15 with a 7.74, but he went out early in eliminations. From there, he went to Maryland International for the Pro Stock Open event, where he finished runner-up to Roy Hill. He skipped the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver and the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but he was at Indy for the US Nationals. A best of 7.81/178.92 failed to make the 7.76 "bump." Rickie did not attend the next two NHRA events (Keystone Nats and Fall Nats), but he was back at Pomona for the World Finals, where his 7.83/176.95 was good for the fifth alternate.

Notes: In March, for the IHRA Winternationals, Smith qualified #8 with a 7.63/182; he made it to round two before losing to Billy Ewing. He set a 189.96 IHRA speed record at the Pro-Am Nationals at Rockingham. He also qualified #1 with a career-best 7.45/188 before falling victim to tire shake in round two and shutting down against eventual winner Ronnie Sox. At the IHRA Springnationals, his clutch went, and he lost in the semifinal. In Aug, at MIR for the Mountain Motor Nationals, Rickie qualified #3 with a 7.68/184, but he fouled in round two. At the IHRA US Open, Smith topped Darrell Alderman in the final for a big win. In September, at the IHRA Fallnationals, Rickie qualified #2 with a 7.48/185.15. He went on to run a best of 7.47/186.72 in eliminations. In the final, against Bob Glidden, his clutch gave out, and he had to settle for runner-up. He ended the season as the 1985 IHRA Pro Stock champion. Michael Beach photo from Milan, MI 85.

Notes: After running a T-Bird for the last few seasons, Smith switched to a Mustang for '86. He did rather well with it, winning the IHRA Pro Stock title. He started the season at Darlington for IHRA's season-opening Winternationals. A 7.32/189.87 qualified #2 behind Roy Hill. Rickie ran another 7.32 at 188.67 in the first round to beat Terry Adams out of shape T-Bird. He advanced into the semifinal with a 7.36/189 when Jerry Yeoman's Camaro broke in round two. But the semis was as far as Smith would get as his 7.40/188 lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.28/191 in Jerry Haas' Camaro. He did better at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships in May. He qualified #3 with a 7.38/189.47 and another 7.38 at 190, beating Al Waters in the first round. In the second round, both he and Bob Harris ran 7.45 (Rickie at Top Speed of the meet 192.30), with the Mustang getting the win light. A 7.40/187.50 advanced to the final over a fouling Roy Hill. He faced Bruce Allen in the Reher and Morrison Camaro in the final. The two had a great race, but Allen's 7.37/187 beat Smith's 7.39/185. He was runner-up to Hill at the MIR Spring Mountain Motor Championships. The next IHRA event was the Springnationals at Bristol. Rickie qualified #4 and ran steady 7.5s to reach the semifinals, where he faced Allen. Once again, Bruce got the better of him, and his 7.53 lost to the Camaro's 7.46. A 7.48 qualified #5 at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Again, he made his way to the semifinals by beating Terry Walters and Barry Shirley. In the semis, he lost to a strong running Bob Glidden, who went on to win. At the IHRA Northern Nationals, he made a timed run of 193.13 (career-best to this point). He then qualified #5 with a 7.44/189.47 and then beat Charlie Peppers with another 7.44 at 191.08 in round one, while a 7.45/192.30 beat Jim Ruth's "Party Time" Firebird in round two. But in the semifinals, he lost to Glidden, who again went on to win. Rickie made it into the final at the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #3 and beat Shirley, Ruth, and a fouling Billy Ewing in the semifinals with a 7.52. But in the final, he faced that T-Bird from Whiteland and his 7.52/185.95 finished second best to Glidden's 7.38/189. Smith was overdue for a win, and he got one. Thompson Dragway held its Independence Eve Championships, and Rickie won. Traction wasn't the best as Low ET was a 7.65 he Hill's Topaz, but Smith ran 7.84/184 over Harold Denton driving Ruth's Firebird in the first round, and a 7.75/188.67 beat Mark Pawuk in the semifinals. In the final, he ran Joe Lepone. Joe fouled away a 7.82/178, and Smith went on to the victory with a 7.69/188.67. That seemed to help as he then went to Martin, Michigan's US 131, for the PHR Championships and won that, too. A 7.50 qualified #4, but he improved to a track record 7.42 in the first round to beat Harry Scribner's Cougar. He beat Hill's out-of-shape in the second round, Topaz, with a 7.48/183.25. Alderman fouled against him in the semifinals, and the final shaped up to be the Mustang against Ewing's Camaro. Rickie slowed to a 7.58/184.42 in the final, but it was enough to beat Billy's 7.64/180. He made yet another final-round appearance at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Rickie qualified #4 and then ran 7.52 in the first round over Dean Goforth, and in round two, he beat Ed Dixon. In the semifinals, he picked up to 7.47 to beat Tim Nabors. In the all-Ford final, he was up against Hill. Roy pulled a huge holeshot and held on to win with a 7.47/186, beating Smith's 7.43/185.90. The same two met in the final at the next IHRA race, the US Open at Rockingham. Rickie had gotten into the final by beating Buddy Ingersoll's turbocharged Buick with a 7.38; he then beat Nabors' Camaro and Adams' T-Bird to meet with Hill again. The roles were reversed this time, with Smith scoring the win over Roy's Topaz. In September, he was at Bristol for the Hurst Pro Stock Shootout. The eight cars that qualified the best during the year made up the field. He beat Nabors in the first round with a 7.46/189.47, but he was surprised in the semifinals when Ruth picked up to a 7.41/190 to beat him. The next day (September 21), IHRA held their season final, the Fallnationals. A 7.40/188 qualified Rickie #3 in the show. He ran well, stopping Dixon in round two with a 7.49/187. But in the semifinals, all hell broke loose when Rickie ran 7.46/188 and lost to Ingersoll's 7.33/192. This performance from a turbocharged V6 against the over 700 cubic inch monster motored cars was unacceptable. The IHRA Pro Stock drivers wanted the Buick out. Ingersoll lost to Glidden in the final to save face for the big-engined cars. That was the end of turbocharged cars in IHRA Pro Stock. They were outlawed after this race. 1985 and 1986 IHRA Pro Stock World Champion.

Notes: Rickie was great with the big-inch IHRA Pro Stocks, but in NHRA Competition he was having a tough time just trying to qualify. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he was the second alternate with a best of 7.577/181.41. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he was the fourteenth alternate with a 7.611/181.89 best. He also ran 7.635/181.52 at Atlanta, 7.691/178.67 at Columbus, and 7.636/181.37 at Indy. None of these efforts qualified. Indy was Rickie's last NHRA event of the year. The car had white letters in a red field. Glidden had red letters in a white field. Photo from Gainesville 3/87. Formerly listed 7.532/183.29 but that did not occur on the NHRA circuit. We need validation.

Notes: 1987 IHRA World Champion. Photo from Columbus 87. Unreal first run in the 7-teens. Rickie was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals in March. He made a pass with his 500 cubic inch NHRA combination and ran 7.57/183. He then switched to his "monster motor" for a Thursday afternoon pass of 7.36/191 that led early qualifying. On Friday, he improved to a career best 7.29 at 189. He still was on top at the end of Friday's qualifying. Bob Glidden shook things up on Saturday when he ran 7.27/197 and 7.26/194. Smith came out Saturday evening and ran 7.25/192 to regain the lead in qualifying until Glidden came back out and ran 7.19/199. On race day Sunday, things changed when Glidden lost in the first round, due to tire shake. Smith took over as the favorite. Rickie's first-round 7.28/190 advanced over a fouling Nick Nikolis and in round two, a 7.26/190 beat Ed Dixon's 7.44/187. Another 7.26 at 192 in the semifinals beat Tim Nabors' tire shaking Camaro and moved him into the final against Roy Hill driving Joe Penny's T-Bird. Roy had been running quicker and quicker as the race progressed, but in the final, the car slipped through the beams and fouled. Rickie ran an amazing 7.17 at 191.08 for the victory. He almost won two in a row at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Rickie set Low ET at 7.37 and made it into the final, but his T-Bird broke and Nabors soloed for the win. He had no problems at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Rickie dominated the race. His 7.35 (Low ET) at 189 qualified number one, and then he ran 7.39/192 over Sam Carroll, 7.43/189 over Gary Hajek, and a semifinal 7.40/191 to beat Darrell Alderman. He faced Terry Adams in the final and Rickie's 7.42/193.54 (Top Speed) got him his second IHRA victory of the year. Then it was off to Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. Smith qualified with a 7.21/193. He had an easy win in the first round, and in round two, his 7.24/193.13 beat Adams' Firebird. Unfortunately, he got left on in the semifinals and his 7.26 lost to Hill's 7.30.

Notes: Smith's 500 cubic inch program left a lot to be desired. While he dominated in the big monster-motored cars, his Ford effort with the "small" engine lagged behind. He won the first three IHRA races of the season, but Bily Meyer (IHRA president at the time) kept throwing weight on his car to try and slow him down. But in NHRA racing, he was hard-pressed even to qualify. He went to Gainesville along with 55 other Pro Stock hopefuls, and his 7.52/184.99 best was nowhere near good enough to make the field which had a 7.41 "bump." Notes: After kicking butt in '87, Rickie wasn't too happy with Billy Meyer's decision to run IHRA Pro Stock along with NHRA rules at 500 cubic inches. The big motored cars were allowed to run in '88, but with a 250-pound penalty. Smith figured his big Ford would still be competitive. He was right! At IHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Darlington, he qualified #2 behind Bob Glidden's 500 cubic inch T-Bird with a 7.37/191.48 (Top Speed). A first-round 7.39/190 beat Steve Schmidt, and in round two, he reset IHRA's Pro Stock et record with a 7.36 (IHRA threw out the '87 records) at 190.67 over Mark Clark. In the semifinals, he took out Warren Johnson with a 7.40. That put him into the final against Glidden. It was a good race, with Smith's 7.39/190.27 (New IHRA speed record) beating Glidden's 7.43/185. It was interesting to note that on every one of the eight passes he made at the event, all were over 190. IHRA's next event was the Supernationals. It was rained out on March 6 and did not run until the 27th, but Rickie did it again. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.37/189.47. Times of 7.43, 7.42, and 7.41 at 189 beat Morris Johnson Jr., Terry Adams, and Glidden (in that order) to reach the final against Johnson. Another 7.37 at 190.27 gave him his second win over WJ's 7.42/186. Another win came at Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships. Rickie's 7.31/191.48 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1, and he again worked his way to the final. After an easy first-round, he ran 7.37/191.08 over Jerry Haas, and a semifinal 7.36/191.48 beat Adams' 7.43/187. He met up with WJ in the final again, and the results were the same: Smith's 7.32/191.48 got him his third win in a row over WJ's 7.43/187.

Notes: After being the top dog in mountain motored Ford cars since '78, Smith made the big leap into a Pontiac for '89. The season didn't start so well when Rickie failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Things went better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals where he qualified #12, but he lost to Bruce Allen. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, 50 cars showed. Smith qualified #14 and beat Morris Johnson Jr. in the first round, before losing to Allen again in round two. Rickie ran really well at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 7.38/186.52 qualified #6. He beat Ken Koretsky in round one, and a 7.47/184.38 beat Warren Johnson's 7.48/186 in round two. In the semifinals, he came up against Allen and once again Bruce got the win with a 7.41/185 beating Smith's 7.49/184.04. | Rick Howard photo from 1989 NHRA Budweiser Springnats, Columbus, OH. 7.466 184.72 NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/89 (12th Alternate). - Danny White

Notes: IHRA World Champ 1989. After 12 years of running Fords, Smith switched to Pontiac for '89. He also left his longtime sponsor, Motorcraft, which had supported him since 1983. The reason was, he had been playing second fiddle to Bob Glidden. Ford gave all its drag racing advertising to Glidden, while Smith got next to none. Rickie had won 19 IHRA victories and four IHRA world Championships in Fords, so it was a tough move to make. Photo from 1989 IHRA Gateway Nationals, Madison, IL.

Notes: Rickie started the NHRA season by qualifying #15 at the Winternationals with a 7.40/187.93. He was sharp on the tree, running a first-round 7.43/186.10 to cover Joe Lepone's quicker 7.35/187. In the second round, Warren Johnson's 7.34/188 beat his 7.42/186.45. At the next event, the Arizona Nationals, a 7.40/186.95 was good for first alternate. Rickie just made the field at the following race, the Supernationals, where a 7.334/187.03 qualified #16. Once again, his driving got him past the first-round when he ran a 7.31/187.46 to beat Mark Pawuk's 7.30/188. In the second round, a 7.35/187.11 beat Larry Morgan's 7.38/189. Unfortunately, a 7.29/188 by Bruce Allen put an end to Rickie's (7.34/187.57) run. At Gainesville for the Gatornationals on March 18, he once again qualified way down the list with a 7.38/186.95 being #13. He got past a fouling Pawuk in the first round, with a 7.44/185.41 and a 7.40/186 beat Morgan's 7.47/185 in the second round. In the semifinal, his 7.38/187.07 beat Bob Glidden's 7.39/189. He met another NHRA first time Pro Stock finalist, Kenny Delco. A final round 7.36/187.22 finished runner-up to Delco's 7.28/189. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. A 7.34/187.42 qualified #11. In the opening round, he improved slightly to a 7.33/187.42 to beat James Antonette and a second round 7.34/187.53 stopped Jim Yates' 7.49/186. But in the semifinals, his 7.38/187.89 lost to Larry Morgan's 7.29/188. Rickie moved up in qualifying at the Southern Nationals where a 7.30/187.81 was good for #9. Unfortunately, he lost to Morgan in the opening round. Best NHRA times were 7.266/189.19 at Ennis Fall.

Notes: Rickie set Low ET and Top Speed at the IHRA Winternationals with 7.12/192.64 marks. He lasted until the semifinal before his 7.16/190 lost to eventual winner Doug Kirk's 7.16/192. Smith did not race at IHRA's second race of the season, the Dixie Nationals. But he returned in a big way at the next event. He reset the IHRA record to 7.08 while qualifying #1, en route to winning the IHRA Eastern Nitrous Nationals at Atco on April 27. A final round 7.09/194.95 beat John Nobile's 7.18/195. A semifinal finish came next at the IHRA Springnationals where Harold Denton beat him with a 7.37 to his 7.33. At the IHRA Empire Nationals, Rickie qualified #1 and then reached the final only to get beat by a Doug Kirk holeshot. Kirk's 7.23/193 beat Smith's 7.21/192.51. He improved that finish by winning the IHRA Gateway Nationals with a 7.22/189.76 over Floyd Cheek who crossed the centerline. He then won the IHRA Carolina Nationals, beating Billy Ewing in the final. Another runner-up finish came at Norwalk at the IHRA World Nationals. In the semifinal, he beat Doug Kirk with a 7.21/190.67, but Billy Huff beat Rickie in the final. He was beaten by Cheek in the first round, at the IHRA US Open on September 20. At the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals, he qualified #10 with a 7.21/192.11. In the first round, Ewing’s 7.18/195 stopped Smith's 7.20/193.87.

Notes: Smith attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 7.25/190.31 was good for the first alternate. At the Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, he again failed to qualify, running a 7.35/187.89 best as the seventh alternate. He improved to career bests of 7.13/193.13 to qualify #8 at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. A first-round 7.18/191.28 beat Joe Lepone Jr's 7.26/190. In round two, Tricky Rickie pulled one of his patented holeshots on Warren Johnson and ran a 7.17/191.00 to win over WJ's 7.11/194. In the semifinals, it was he who got left on as Larry Morgan's 7.19/191 beat his 7.18/190.96. NHRA's next stop was at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. Rickie qualified #15 with a 7.16/192.76. In the first round, he surprised Scott Geoffrion with a holeshot 7.22/191.00 that beat Scott's 7.18/192. In round two, a 7.25/190.35 beat David Rampy's 7.28/187. For the second race in a row, he was in the semifinals, and once again, he faced Morgan. Rickie tried to get away with a holeshot, but he "bulbed," and his 7.25/190.71 was for naught as Larry went into the final with a 7.19/192. At the non-points NHRA Winston Invitational, Smith qualified #14 with a 7.20/191.97. He showed his driving talent by beating Mark Pawuk's 7.14/193 in the first round, with a 7.18/192.47. In round two, both he and Jim Yates ran 7.20's, but Yates got the win. These early season races were run using a Bickel-built car. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he debuted a new Haas-built Firebird. The new car qualified #12 with a 7.22/190.67. He beat Lepone Jr's 7.32/190 in the first round, with a 7.27/189.31. In the second round, his 7.31/189.95 fell to Frank Iaconio's 7.26/190. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Smith didn't have a good outing as his best of 7.29 was good for the fifth alternate spot. He rebounded nicely by qualifying #9 at Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals with a 7.16/191.57. He treed Morgan in the first round, with his 7.27/189.35 beating Larry's quicker 7.20/192. Unfortunately, he lost to WJ in round two. Photo from 1993 US Nationals.

Notes: Smith was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals held in mid-March. He had run 7.16/194.21 on an early qualifying attempt but then rain postponed the race one week. He could not return as it was being held the same weekend as the NHRA Gatornationals, where he had been already committed to run. In April, he was at Huntsville Raceway for the IHRA Bama Nationals, where his 4.54/156.65 qualified #10 on the 1/8 mile track. In the opening round, his 4.58/155.65 beat Jim Revis' 4.65/155. A second-round 4.59/155.49 lost to Terry Leggett's 4.52/157. In the first week of June, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He had borrowed an engine from Billy Huff to run for this race. A 7.05/197.49 qualified #3. He then ran 7.14/196.97 in the first round to drop Mark Thomas' 7.19/193. He set Top Speed in round two, where his 7.05/198.23 defeated Revis' 7.17/194. He continued to make his way to the final by stopping Leggett's 7.20/195 in the semi-final with a 7.11/196.37. He faced low qualifier, Doug Kirk in the final, and Smith ran another 7.11 at 196.54, which was good enough for the victory over Kirk's 7.15/196. Smith was at Richmond in June for a four-car P/S show. All cars made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Rickie ran 7.41/190.67 to qualify low. He then beat John McLain in the first round with a 7.35/189.87. In the next round, he ran 7.42/188.28 over Harold Robinson's 7.64/181. He faced Terry Walters in the final, and Smith got crossed up and shut down while Walters ran 7.46/185 for the victory. Smith then backed up, restaged, and ran 7.39/190.67. He did not run at the IHRA Empire Nationals as it was run on the same weekend as the NHRA Western Nationals, where he was competing. He did not race at any other IHRA events this season due to his busy NHRA schedule. He did make it to the Mountain Motor Nationals, held at Maryland International. His 7.27/191.73 qualified #13. He had problems in the first round and slowed to 9.53 in a loss to Chris Hunt's 7.13. Despite not competing in the full IHRA schedule, he finished fourteenth in points.

Notes: Photo from the 1994 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. | Rickie started the '94 season by qualifying on the "bump" spot at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.17/192.84. A 7.22/191.40 lost to low qualifier and eventual winner Warren Johnson's 7.12/194. At the NHRA Quality Care Nationals in Arizona, Smith's best of 7.23/192.67 failed (second alternate) to qualify. Smith made up for his non-qualifying effort by qualifying #12 at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals with a 7.14/193.29. He beat Bob Glidden's T-Bird in the first round, with a 7.17, but in round two, his 7.18 lost to Kurt Johnson's 7.12. Rickie ran well at the NHRA Gatornationals, qualifying #8 with a 7.14/193.13. Both he and Kurt Johnson ran 7.23 (Smith at 191.28) in the first round, but Rickie got the win light. In the second race, Kurt's dad Warren dropped Smith's 7.20/191.85 with a 7.11/195. In April he was at Rockingham for NHRA's Winston Invitational. He ran 7.13/193.13 to qualify #11. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.20/191.48 lost to the meet's eventual winner Darrell Alderman's 7.11/194. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Rickie once again qualified on the "bump" with a 7.18/192.63. WJ beat his 7.22/191.48 in the first round, with a 7.10/195. The sixth race of NHRA's '94 season was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. A 7.22/190.51 qualified #11. Rickie was used to winning as he was very successful on the IHRA trail, but he was not used to just making the NHRA shows and losing early. So in the first round, at Memphis, he pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled against Mark Osborne.

Notes: Smith was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He ran a career-best (to this point) 6.91 at 203.20 to qualify #4 in the sixteen-car field. Another strong 6.92/201.25 beat Tim Nabor's 6.99/200 in the opening round of eliminations. But despite running 6.93/200.49 in round two, he lost out to a quicker, leaving Charlie Garrett, who won with a 6.94/198. He did not run at IHRA's second race, the Dixie Nationals, but he did go to Bristol for the Springnationals. Unfortunately, his 7.13/194.93 (third alternate) failed to qualify. That was the last IHRA event Rickie ran in '94. His sponsors wanted him at the NHRA events, and with NHRA having so many races, time did not allow him to run both.

Notes: Rickie started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He failed to qualify as his 7.16/192.96 was good for the first alternate. He also failed to make the field at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where he was the third alternate with a 7.16/193.09 best. Smith really stepped up at Houston, where he qualified #7 with a 7.035/195.35. Those would hold as his best NHRA national event times of the season. But he slowed to 7.12/193.79 in the first round and lost to Bill Glidden's 7.07/196. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, he ran 7.09/194.46 to qualify #10. This time, his 7.08/194.72 lost to Rusty Glidden's 7.01/196 in the first round. He was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational event. A 7.10/194.46 qualified #11, and in round one, his 7.13/194.04 lost to Larry Morgan's 7.12/192. The next NHRA race was the Southern Nationals held at Atlanta Dragway. Smith qualified #12 with a 7.13/193.38. In the first round, he fouled away a 7.20/191.06 against Darrell Alderman. The NHRA Mid-South Nationals was held at Memphis in the first week of May, and Rickie qualified #8 at this race with a 7.07/193.92. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.15/192.34 lost to the eventual winner Mark Pawuk's 7.14/193. While Smith was losing early at these races, you have to consider that there were sometimes over 40 cars attempting to qualify for these fields. Just making the program was a big deal. Unfortunately, Smith failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals, where he was the first alternate with a 7.11/194.30. His next stop was at Richmond for the NHRA Virginia Nationals, where he ran 7.16/192.38 to qualify #15. In round one, his 7.19/192.14 fell to Jim Yates' 7.07/195. He was the fourth alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals at 7.25/190.67. At Topeka, Smith qualified #8 for the NHRA Western Nationals with a 7.09/193.79. His 7.15/191.93 lost to Kurt Johnson's 7.08/193 in the first round. At Denver, he qualified #12 with a 7.55/181.45 for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. In the first round, Yates' 7.48/183 beat his 7.58/182.11. He also qualified well at Sonoma, where his 7.10/194.46 qualified #6 for the NHRA Autolite Nationals. Both he and Steve Schmidt ran 7.14 in the first round (Smith 193.84), with Schmidt crossing the stripe first. Converted from 264 comp number to 43 in tribute to Petty Racing.
