Notes: Top Fuel racer John Smyser's "Terrifying Toronado" was a contemporary of the Hurst Hairy Olds exhibition machine, and by all accounts lived up to the "terrifying" part of its name. Handshakes with the guardrail a regular occurrence, and accompanied both the debut ('66 AHRA Winternationals) and the final appearance ('67 NHRA Winternationals). Like the Hurst car a supercharged 425" Olds mill drove each of the axles. Smyser's Toronado differed from the Hurst car in that the front engine utilized a Toronado-like FWD Turbo-Hydro trans, while the back one drove through a conventional Olds rear end via a dual-disc clutch (direct drive). - RT
