Notes: Snow was at Green Valley Raceway on February 18 for a best of three match race against Don Gay's Pontiac. Gene's Dart broke in the first race, and Gay's GTO broke in the second. Gene won the final race with an 8.87 to win the match. Gene was in the Dart on June 22 for a match race at Austin, Texas against Gay. Don had a rod let go in their first race, and he was out of competition. At the same time, Ron Leslie also had a match race there against Mike Burkhart. Mike lost his trans in the first race, so Snow and Leslie became a match. In the first race, Leslie won with an 8.12/181 when Gene fouled away an 8.23/174.75. In the second race, an 8.04/178.21 lost to the quicker-leaving Leslie at 8.07/177. The following day (June 23), Snow was at Amarillo for a best of three against Kelly Chadwick. The Camaro's transmission failed in the first two races, and Snow won easily. The roles reversed in the last race as Gene's transmission blew. He then went to Oklahoma City for its Funny Car Championships on July 4. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 8.16/184.07 beat Paul Stefansky's 8.30/175. Notes: The car was built in 1968 to replace the scary Dart. Snow's first Logghe car. I think this started with a B&M Torqueflite, but by the end of summer, it had a Crowerglide and began running 200 mph. I know this car ran in the 7's; we need to check the best time. The 205 at OCIR was at the Mfg. Meet, so it is accurate. - Bill McLauchlan | On August 17, at Houston, Snow hit 200.88 for the first 200 mph funny. At Wichita, 202.70 was the new mark. Notes: The full-size Charger ran earlier in the season. This was the '68 Logghe car with the full-size Charger body (see ID:79281). In mid-69, Gene replaced the body with the mini-Charger Fiberglass Ltd body with molded in red metalflake (ID:83687) and really began running some big numbers.

Notes: Gene Snow was one of the top '60s funny car stars in his "Rambunctious" Dodges. Snow went through the ranks of Super Stocks, F/Xs, and flip-top funny cars. Even though Gene won the US Nationals twice in a row in '66 and '67 with his Dodge, it was his '69 Mini-Charger was considered one of the top ten funnies of the '60s. The second Charger, the mini-version, replaced the full sized one he debuted at the end of '68. Snow had been working on the direct drive Crowerglide setup and perfected it with the '69 Charger. Snow has never been known to shy away from a new idea. The Mini-Charger ran a best ET of 7.13 at 213.27 mph. With the Crowerglide direct drive unit, the car would leave the line behind the automatic transmission funny cars of the day and charge by them on the big end. The car was one of the first funny cars to top the 200 mph barrier and Snow did it on a regular basis. The chassis for Snow's killer top end direct drive Mini-Charger was built by R&B race Cars of Kenosha, Wisconsin (John Buttera and Dennis Rollain). NOTE: This photo is actually the '68 Logghe car with a new Fiberglass Ltd., molded in red metal flake, '69 Mini-Charger body that Gene ran throughout 1969. This is the car that ran 7.13 at Rockingham, NC. The R&B car was driven by Jake Johnston (see the photo in item 4013). Ran 213.78 at Rockingham NC on 9/69. | A 7.65/199.54 qualified third at the AHRA Springnationals at Bristol on June 8. He beat Malcolm Durham with an even better 7.55/202.24 in the first round, but he burned two pistons doing it and was unable to return for the second round. He then went to Dallas on June 15 for the NHRA Springnationals where he made a 7.70/200 qualifying pass and was then told by NHRA officials that the car was disqualified for being too narrow. He ran a best of three match race against Jim Maybeck's Corvair at LaPlace on June 22. He won all three races with runs of 7.79/193.12, and 8.69/196.96 when Maybeck broke. He soloed in the final race, running 7.57 at a track speed record of 204.08. Snow won an eight-car show in Dallas on September 20. He beat Mart Higginbotham in the first round, with a 7.55/163. In the semifinal, a 7.29/204.54 beat Kelly Chadwick's 7.48/194. In the final, he set both ends of the track record with a 7.24/206.88 over Cogo Eads. The following week (September 28) came the AHRA US Open at Rockingham. He won the event over Higginbotham with a 7.13 track record.

Notes: Crowerglide Direct Drive. Snow's 7.23/208.71 mph run at the Dallas Int'l Motor Speedway-based Springnationals on May 3 was the first 200-mph run in NHRA Funny Car competition. He also went 211.26 at that event, but did not back it up. Set Low ET and Top Speed at York at 7.23/214.24. Snow also won three AHRA Grand American Series events, the AHRA Points Championship, and the AHRA Driver of the Year award. He concluded the year with a best run of 6.76/218.44 at Lions Drag Strip. "We carried a spare motor the whole year and never had to use it," said Snow. "It was an extraordinary deal." - NHRA | Qualified fourth at NHRA Ontario 11/21/70 at 7.086/203.61. Ran 6.83 at Suffolk. | Gene Snow hit some shocking speeds with his Charger in '69, like 214 mph, so why on earth would you change cars for '70. It was easy as in those years the cars were advancing so fast that last year's winner was this year's non-qualifier. Also Dodge had brought out the new Challenger and it had a smaller front end than the big boxy Charger did. The Challenger featured a 2" chopped top and the body came from Fiberglass Ltd. Al Bergler did all the interior tin. Keith Black built the 426 Hemi that used M/T rods and Forgedtrue pistons. A Crower roller cam was used. Black also used his magic on the heads. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold and Don Hampton modified the 6/71 GMC blower. Up top sat an Enderle injector. The power was transmitted through a Crowerglide clutch and flywheel setup with four discs to a Detroit Locker rear with 4.30 gears. This became the car to beat in '70. | Gene started the season at the AHRA Winternationals in Jan where he didn't do too well. He advanced past round one with a 7.76 when Roy Gay's GTO broke, but in round two, he slept on the line and his 7.66 lost to last year's big winner Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. Fortunately, Ongais broke and was unable to run in the semifinals so Gene was reinstated. He was unable to capitalize on it, when he was started leaking oil and was shut off on the line, giving Jake Johnston in the "Blue Max" a single into the final. A week later, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The track wasn't great for the high horsepower cars and Snow qualified #5 with a 7.61. A 7.68/202 in the first round, beat Lew Arrington's quicker 7.61. In the second round, a 7.40 beat a tire smoking Ongais, and in the semifinals, a 7.30/200 beat Ken Safford's 7.47 in the Mr. Norm car. In the final, he ran the car that flew here the year before, the "Hawaiian" with Larry Reyes behind the wheel. Gene lost this one, with his 7.83/184.42 finishing runner-up to Reyes' 7.55/196. He ran at Lions on March 8 for the AHRA Grand American where he won his first two rounds with runs of 7.32 and 7.26, but in the semifinals his reverser failed after his burnout and he had to shut off in his race against Don Prudhomme. At the Dallas season opener on March 15, he beat Bobby Steakley with a 7.44/197.36, but then lost in his next race. Then Gene began he hit his stride. He won a best of three match race at Amarillo against Reyes. Times were not the greatest, but he won all three races with 7.84, 7.89, and 7.92 ETs. He then went to Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he won with a final round 7.14 (Low ET) at only 168.53 over Jay Howell. He ran a strong 7.16/186.72 while beating Prudhomme in the semifinal. At the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Dallas, Gene didn't win as he had mechanical issues, but he did set both ends of the NHRA record to 7.23/208.81. Snow ran faster, setting Top Speed of the meet with a 212.76, but he didn't run fast enough to back it up for the record. He also made the final at the next AHRA Grand American race at Frontier International. Snow actually lost to Leroy Goldstein in the "Ramchargers" car in the semifinals when Leroy's 7.42/197 beat his 7.77/173, but Goldstein lost a motor on the run and once again Gene was reinstated. In the final, he fouled against Prudhomme. Another runner-up finish came at Detroit for the AHRA Grandnationals where his final round 7.56/179.80 lost to Jay Howell's 7.37/180. Early in June, he was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. He dominated the Funny Car program running a 7.61/192.16 in the first round, over Jerry Jokerst. A second round 7.39/203.61 beat Goldstein's 7.63/175, while in the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 7.34/196.92 to beat Clyde Morgan's 7.52 in Dick Harrell's second Camaro. In the final, his 7.35/205.00 (Top Speed) took the victory over Fritz Callier's 7.77/187. He almost doubled up the following week at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. Snow qualified #3 with a 7.22/209.79. He worked his way into the final by running a 7.19 in round one, a 7.20/207.37 in round two over Mike Snively's 7.38/199 in Jim Annin's Challenger, and a 7.09/211.76 in the semifinal while stopping Prudhomme's 7.64/166. He met up with Goldstein in the final, and the "Ramchargers" driver laid down a 7.03 (Low ET) at 208 to take the victory against Gene's 7.56/148.51. He wasn't down for long as two days later, he scored a victory over an eight-car field at Kansas International. There he beat Bobby Wood in the first round, with a 7.40/189.86 while another 7.40 at 197.36 beat Dale Pulde's 7.54/183 in the semifinals. He reset the track speed mark in the final with a 7.21/200.88 that won the race over Larry Arnold's 7.53/177. On June 24, he won the NHRA Division 4 race at Oklahoma City. Snow qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 7.81 and in the final ran Low ET and Top Speed at 7.35/207.36 on a single since Mart Higginbotham lost fire on the line. He faced off against Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster" on June 28 at Southland Dragway. Gene won the first race while setting a track ET record of 7.29 at 204.54 over Rowe's 7.83/170. Bobby came back to win the second race with his 7.49/196 beating the "Snowman's" 7.56/200. Gene won the match when he won the third race with a 7.34/201 over Bobby, who fouled with a 7.73/170. It was Gene who fouled in the first round, at Capitol's King of Kings Funny Car race on July 11. He was running Prudhomme and he fouled away a 7.15/187.50 while the "Snake" got the win with a 7.45/185. Another win came at the first running of the NHRA Summernationals. Only nine cars showed and Snow ran 7.23/211.26 to qualify first. He got the "bye run" in the first round, and ran 7.34. In round his 7.32/207 beat Bruce Larson while in the semifinals, he got serious and set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.20/214.24 to take out Phil Castronovo. In the final, he ran Vic Brown driving Gary Richards' "Black Shadow" Mustang. A final 7.27/210.77 wrapped up the win over Vic's 7.47/191. Another win on the AHRA Grand American series came at New England Dragway on August 2. He beat Don Schumacher in the first round, with a 7.09/189.98. He got around Morgan in round two with a fairly easy run, but in the semifinals, he set a bit of history when his 6.95/212.76 was the first six second run by a Funny Car in AHRA competition. On that pass, he beat Howell's 7.20/192. In the final, a Low ET and Top Speed effort of 6.93/213.77 took home the "bucks" over Goldstein. A week later (August 9), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified for the show with a 7.37/191.48. A 7.12/204.54 beat an impressive 7.23/200 from Randy Walls' Chevy-powered car. Unfortunately, while racing eventual winner Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town-Hustler" in the semifinals, he fouled away the Low ET and Top Speed of the meet, a 7.06/210.77. He ended August by winning the AHRA Grand American race at Bristol. Gene qualified #1est with a 7.22/199.54 and waltzed through the field. The field was short and since Snow was the low qualifier, he got the "odd lot" solo in the first round, and ran 7.55. In the second round, a 7.36/203.61 beat Charlie Wilson, and in the semis, his 7.21/202.24 dropped Al Vanderwoude. Notes: Crowerglide. In 1971, Snow fielded one of the first multicar teams in the sport, running a pair of mini-Chargers with longtime crew chief Jake Johnston as the other driver. Highlights of the season included the Super Stock Magazine Championships in York, Pa., a runner-up finish at the Summernationals, a win at the OCIR All Pro Series, and a Drag News Driver of the Year award. Ran 6.71 at Lions Drag Strip 10/71. Ran 6.71 Low ET at AHRA St. Louis. | Snow debuted his new Charger at a four-car race at Southland in March. The car was still in primer, and on Gene's first-ever pass in the car, his 8.19/128.20 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 7.35/187. In the second round, he singled, running a track record 7.03 at 194.38. A follow-up run of 6.94 showed that the new car was tough. The car's national event debut came at the NHRA Gatornationals, where Snow qualified #3 with a 6.85/204. He beat Tom Prock's 7.02 in the opening round with a 6.89, but in round two, he smoked the tires to an 8.13 loss to Phil Castronovo's 6.93. He dominated the final OCIR All-Pro race run the following week (March 27). There he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.82/217.39. He then went on to win by running 7.02/201.79 over Dean LaPole, and an easy 6.9/210 advanced in round two when Dave Condit lost fire in the "L. A. Hooker." He eased past the semifinals to meet with Jim Dunn in the final. Dunn broke, and Snow ran 7.89/120.34 for the victory. The next day he jumped on a plane and went to Amarillo to drive his old Challenger, and he won there too. In April, he was at West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. He reached the final against Mart Higginbotham only to have his Charger break. He then won the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Dallas. A final round 7.36 stopped Charlie Smith. Then came his big win at the Super Stock Nationals at York US 30. Gene qualified #1 with a 6.93 but ran nothing but 6.8's in eliminations. He started with a 6.88/199.11 over Lew Arrington. Low ET came in round two, where his 6.85/209.79 stopped McCulloch's 6.97/214. Another 6.85 at 214.79 in the semifinals beat Leonard Hughes' 6.97/201. In the final, he faced newcomer Tim Kushi, and Snow stormed (pun intended) to a 6.88/219.51 (Top Speed) to beat Tim's 7.37/199. After that, he won an eight-car show at Epping, stopping Terry Hedrick in the final. He also won the AHRA Grand American held at Green Valley Raceway on May 23. He ran times of 6.93 (Low ET) at 201.34, 6.97/192.70 over Dick Harrell, and 6.98/203.60 over Higginbotham to reach the final. For the money, he raced Cecil Lankford in the "Brand X" Mustang. Snow's 6.99/169.81 got him the victory. June started with Snow bagging another win, this time at the Baton Rouge AHRA Grand American race. He set Low ET in the final with a 6.79 over a fouling Hughes. The next week (June 13), he was at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.89/215.31 qualified #3, and he beat Dunn in the first round, but he fouled against Sush Matsubara in round two. His next win came at the AHRA Springnationals held at Denver on June 27. There he beat John Dekker in the final. Englishtown was his next stop for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.92. A first-round 7.05/196 beat Kelly Brown who lost an engine in Barry Setzer's Vega. He got to solo in the next two rounds when Casey Powell was unable to run, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals faced Hughes in the final, and Snow was just a bit late off the line, and his 6.95/207.37 lost to Hughes' 6.96/211. He won over an eight-car field at Union Grove two days later, setting Low ET at 6.71. Another runner-up finish came at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, where despite setting track records of 6.73/220.58 in the final, he lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.77/217. He lost to Tom Hoover in the semifinals at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals.

Notes: Gene Snow started the '71 season behind the wheel of his highly successful '70 Logghe-built Challenger. He started the season by running at Irwindale's New Year's Day Funny Car Festival. Snow qualified #5 in the sixteen-car show with a 7.10 and an opening round 7.96/121.45, advanced over a tire-smoking Frank Rupert, who was driving Don Cook's Corvette. Gene lost before the finals. He was at Fremont's sixteen-car New Year's Day race. Gene started the new year right. He ran 7.05/211.26 to beat Rupert, and a second round 6.90/215 advanced as he was given the "odd lot" solo. In the semifinals, he beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman with a 6.89/213.28. He saved the best for last when he ran 6.83/212.26 to beat Don Prudhomme's 6.99/214 in the final. Gene's 6.83 and his earlier 215 were new Fremont track records. From there, he went to OCIR for the first All-Pro race. There he ran Low ET and Top Speed at 6.88/214.88. A semifinal 6.96/201.34 beat Ron O'Donnell in the "Fighting Irish" car, and he went up against Jim Dunn in the final. Unfortunately, Snow had problems and slowed to a 7.41/152.28 in a runner-up finish to Dunn's 6.96/203. The old Challenger proved that it had another win or two in it at the Lions AHRA Grand American race. A little bit of luck was on Gene's side as well. In the first round, he ran 6.94 to beat Tom McEwen's 7.10. Luck played a part in the next round, where Gene broke, but opponent Rich Siroonian crossed the centerline and was disqualified in "Uncle John" Mazmanian's car. In the semifinals, Leroy Goldstein broke in the "Ramchargers" car, broke, so Snow advanced into the final against Stan Shiroma. Once again, racer's luck came into play as Shiroma lost fire and Snow singled for the victory. Shiroma got some revenge by beating Snow in the opening round at the second OCIR All-Pro event. Next stop was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Gene had runner-upped here the year before and was hoping for a win this time around. He looked strong in qualifying, where his 7.10/214.28 (Top Speed) qualified #2 behind teammate Jake Johnston, who drove Snow's #2 car to a 6.94 for the pole. In the first round, Dunn's 'Cuda broke, and Snow advanced with a 7.33/188.67. In the second round, a blown rear end slowed the car to a 16.33, but he still won when Shiroma lost fire on his burnout. But that was as far as Gene would go in eliminations as he was unable to repair in time for his semifinal race with eventual winner Butch Maas who was driving the "Hawaiian." The following week (February 13), he was back at OCIR for the third All Pro event. Prudhomme was running strong there,e and in the semifinals, the "Snake's" 6.71/225 beat Snow's 7.10/169.49. AHRA's second race of the season was the Winternationals held at Beeline Dragway on February 21. Snow qualified #3 among AHRA's "seeded" entries with a 7.18. It was a 32-car show, and Snow made it into the final. He started with a 7.33 over Vic Cecelia in the "Telstar." A second round 7.04/196.50 beat teammate Johnston's 7.12/204. Then came a close round three battle with Liberman that saw Snow's 6.87/211.76 get the win over "Jungle's" 6.91/211. In the semifinals, Snow ran Low ET and Top Speed at 6.84/214.28 while beating Mart Higginbotham. He faced Dick Harrell in the final and Harrell got the win. Snow then debuted his new Charger in primer at Southland Dragway in March, just before the NHRA Gatornationals. The Challenger managed to get one last win at Amarillo on March 28. Gene had been competing at the OCIR All-Pro final with his new Charger (which he won), and then jumped on a plane to race his Challenger in a four-car show at Amarillo. Snow ran 7.02/209.30 over Kelly Chadwick in his first race, and in his second, he reset the track record to 6.92 while beating John Dekker. His speed on the run was 211.26. He topped that in the final, where he set Top Speed at 212.76 while beating Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max" for the victory.

Notes: In mid-January, Gene won the Lions Grand Premiere when he beat Bobby Rowe (Hawaiian) 6.54/222.77 to a losing 6.55/226.13. 1972 was also the first full year that plastic model company Revell was involved with drag racing. Gene's Logghe chassis was used as the template by Revell for all their newly designed funny car model kits. This chassis design, with slight variations, has been in constant production by Revell for almost forty years. Also ran 6.782/184.42 at Tulsa PRA race. Used a Crowerglide. Gene's '72 season started at Fremont for their New Year's race where he qualified second with a 6.82 and ran a first-round 6.87 over Kelly Brown (Mr. Ed). In the semis a broken trans let eventual winner Bill Leavitt (6.76) advance to the final. At the AHRA Winternats a 6.77 qualified him #5, but he failed to reach the finals. As mentioned above, he won the Lions Grand Premiere on January 28 with his Low ET charge of 6.54. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.57/223.88 at OCIR while winning the second All-Pro event over Ray Alley. On March 5 at Bakersfield for the March Meet he qualified #1 with a 7.03/209.30, but Kelly Brown's 7.00/201 beat him in the first round. Snow qualified second at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA Nationals and beat Tom Hoover in the first round, before setting Low ET at 6.66 in the semis over a crossed up Leroy Goldstein. In the final Bill Leavitt's 6.70/210 beat his 6.82/180.36 and he had to settle for runner-up. In May at OCIR for the Hang Ten meet he ran a first-round 6.79/215.82 over Tom Ferraro and a second round 6.68/222.22 (Top Speed) over Sush Matsubara. In the semis he got out of shape and lost to Pat Foster's 6.64/207. On May 26 at Union Grove for the Olympics of drag racing event, Shirley Muldowney's 6.76/207 beat Gene in the semis. The next day (27), he runner-upped to a strong running Al Marshall (6.66/218) still at the Drag Racing Olympics. In June at St. Louis for the Dick Harrell Benefit race-12 cars showed and all ran the first-round with the two Low ETs meeting for the title. The Super Duster (6.66) and Snow (6.80) had the Low ETs and met in the final with Gene winning. At the NHRA Springnats on June 11, Jake Johnston's 6.94 beat his boss in the first round. Also in June at Bristol for the IHRA Springnats, Gene's 7.25 qualified #5. He advanced past the first-round when Dale Pulde lost a blower belt. A second round 7.29 beat Johnny Valadez's Chevy-powered car, but a tire smoking 7.58 failed to get past Jim Paoli's 6.97/212 in the semi's. On June 18 Rockford held their East/West meet and 24 cars showed for 12 spots. Snow qualified third with a 6.98, but lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.82/220 in the final with a quicker 6.74/227.27 (Top Speed). The NHRA Summernats on July 16 was next stop for Gene and a 6.60/219.51 qualified him fourth. A first-round 6.77 beat Al Marshall (6.85), and Leonard Hughes failed to show in the second round advancing Snow into the semis where an off pace 7.06/161 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.67/213. Qualified at 6.782/184.42 at Tulsa PRA in August. He made it into the semifinals again at the IHRA Summernationals at Dragway 42 on August 20 where he ran a first-round 6.70/216.84 over Ron Colson's 6.76/222, a second round 6.68/218.97 advanced when Leavitt broke a rear and a 6.83/189.47 lost to Clare Sanders thundering 6.55/228.42. A big win came over Charlie Therwhanger at Amarillo for the Division 4 final. A 6.78/184.42 qualified #19 at Tulsa for AHRA's National Challenge race, but he lost to Mart Higginbotham in the first frame. On to Dallas for the IHRA Nationals where he again qualified with a 6.78 good for eleventh. A first-round 6.72 beat a sideways Richard Tharp in the first round, and he failed to fire for round two. He was reinstated when Shirl Greer broke a trans. In the semis against Don Schumacher, he again failed to fire. On September 18 at the IHRA US Open he was shut down on the line with an oil leak in the first round. An interesting win came his way at the AHRA Grand Am Finals where his 7.36/131 lost to Tommy Grove's 6.68/213, but it was claimed that Grove crossed the centerline. Gene was said to have given the prize money to Tommy, but kept the race win for his sponsors. On October 22 at Amarillo for the NHRA World Finals, Preston Davis' 6.61/212 beat Gene's 6.70/212.79 in the first round.

Notes: Gene did not have the success in 1973 that he had enjoyed in the preceding years. He started the year at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #10. His 6.89 advanced when Russell Long broke in the "Tom and Jerry" Mustang in the opening round. But in round two, Gene's tire-smoking 7.20/143.54 lost to the eventual winner Jim Dunn's 6.91/210. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #26 with a 6.86/205.01. An opening round 6.81/181.08 beat Butch Maas, who broke in the Mickey Thompson Grand Am. In the second round, Gene had problems and slowed to a 7.63/118.57 loss to Richard Tharp's 6.66/209 in the "Blue Max." That was better than his non-qualifying effort at the NHRA Winternationals (in his Challenger). He qualified #15 at the Gatornationals with the new Charger at 6.601/223.32 and advanced past the first-round with a 6.750/209.30 over alternate Paul Smith's 7.24/193. He had problems and shut off in round two against Ed McCulloch. He won over a sixteen-car field at Green Valley Raceway in April. This was big as it was probably his only victory of the year. He ran fairly well at the AHRA Grand American at Dragway 42 on May 23. Gene qualified #5 for the show, and in round one, advanced with a 6.85/190.67. In round two, a 6.67/220.04 beat Don Schumacher's 7.15/211. He made an easy run in the semifinals when Mart Higginbotham (driving in his last race) fouled. In the final, he faced Jim Liberman, and JJ took the win with a 6.86 over Snow's troubled 14.11/31.90. In June, he was at Denver's Century 21 Raceway for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #11 and beat Tom Hoover in the first round, with a 6.89. A second-round 6.83 beat Bob Durban, but in the semifinals, a 6.89 by Art Ward beat his quicker 6.87. Gene ran one of his better ETs in qualifying for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.479/210 for the #4 spot in the field. A first-round 6.811/173.07 failed to get around Leroy Goldstein's 6.61/222 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. At St. Louis in August for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, Snow ran 6.69 to qualify #5. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. At NHRA Indy, Gene was among a large field of non-qualifiers with a 6.65/208.81 best. He did run an excellent ET at the Ontario Supernationals, qualifying #2 at 6.340 at only 208.81 mph. Unfortunately, he lost to Jim Dunn in round one, 6.53/207 to 6.58/192.71. Gene also ran 6.60 in Connecticut. Did Gene run 230 mph somewhere this year?

Ran 6.496 at Fremont AHRA 3/30/74, 6.878 at Gainesville, 6.456 at Columbus, 6.425 at Green Valley, 6.450/221.67 at Englishtown, and 6.456/208.81 at Ontario. | Gene Snow had been a Mopar guy since he started racing funny cars. A lot of the other Mopar runners had been changing over to the sleek Vega bodies in the early '70s. The big Dodge Charger body that Snow was running had the aerodynamic properties of a brick. So finally, after the Pomona Winters, he also made the switch. The new Vega made its first national event debut at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #15 with a 6.87, but he lost in the first round to another Vega that was making its debut there, Al Segrini driving the "Black Magic." Snow then went to Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme. In round two, his 6.89 lost to John Lombardo's 6.51, but Lombardo's car broke, so he was reinstated for the semifinals. He didn't hang around long, though, as Ed McCulloch beat him in their race. Still, it was a strong outing, and the car had run a best of 6.49/217.70. The following week (April 6), he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. A first-round 6.78/206.89 beat Sush Matsubara, but in round two his 6.92/208.33 fell to Don Schumacher's 6.89/192. Gene's best NHRA national event times were the 6.450/221.67 from Englishtown. | Best I found for the 74 Vega was 6.39 at Fremont and 224.43 at West Salem. - Dennis Doubleday

Notes: Gene raced at the Irwindale Grand Premiere and hit 6.67/205.94. He was out for most of the first six months of 1975 after back surgery. Billy Meyer drove his car at Pomona and Gainesville. Gene returned in June 1975 to win at IHRA Bristol with a best of 6.36/223.88, defeating Denny Savage in the Chi-Town Hustler in the final. Finished third in 1975 IHRA points (tied with Denny Savage). He was the third alternate at NHRA Englishtown at 6.740-225.00. Gene was at Edmonton International on July 30 for its Funny Car Spectacular race. There were 24 cars present. All were to run three rounds of racing, with the winner being determined by wins. In Snow's first race, his 6.54/194 beat a badly out-of-shape Bill Spevacek. In his second race, he beat Ken McLean with a 6.39/215. His third race didn't go as planned, as Raymond Beadle got out of shape and crossed the centerline, sideswiping Gene's Vega. Shortly after, he was in Seattle for the Seafair Funny Car Championships. It was a big 32-car show. Snow's 7.09/149 in the opening round of eliminations beat Bryan Raines' 7.14/194. But in the second round, his 6.53 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.38. Gene qualified #5 at Indy at 6.288/227.84. He improved to 6.283/230.17 in a close round one win over Jake Johnston at 6.322/214.28, but ran a 16-second shutoff in round two against Raymond Beadle. Gene was a DNQ at the World Finals but ran no quicker than 6.439.

Notes: Gene was in Tucson in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.80/212. In the first round, he crossed the centerline while racing Jim West and was disqualified. He was reinstated for round two when West's Vega broke. This time Snow's 7.13 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.92. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.27/223.88 qualified #8. He beat Topper Kramer with a 6.41/220.04 and Jake Johnston with a 6.62/212.76 before fouling against Ed McCulloch. Gene won the AHRA Show-Me Nationals at Kansas City International in April. It was an eight-car show, and Snow's 6.31 in the first round beat Bob Pickett's 6.47 in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. He set Low ET in the semifinals with a 6.26 that stopped "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.55. In the final, Tom Hoover lost oil pressure and shut off while Snow ran 7.71/117.80 for the victory. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals at LaPlace Dragway, Snow qualified #5 in the eight-car field. He got out of shape and shut off in the first round, losing to low qualifier and eventual winner Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max." He almost won the next AHRA race as well, the Okie Nationals at Tulsa. Gene qualified #3 with a 6.81. He reached the finals, running a best of 6.74/201.78 in a semifinal solo. He faced Dale Emery driving Mike Burkhart's Monza. Snow ran 6.76/187.50, but it was good for the runner-up spot to Emery's 6.57/217. Another win came at the AHRA Grandnationals at Detroit Dragway. There he stopped Hoover in the final. His next stop was at St. Louis in June for the AHRA Springnationals. Once again, he ran well, beating Eddie Pauling, driving Johnny Loper's "Little Hoss" Monza in the first round, with a 6.56/195.23. Tom McEwen smoked the tires in the semifinals, and Gene's 6.61/209 advanced. He faced Hoover in the final, but he smoked the tires and shut off to 16.38 while Tom's 6.53 won. The following weekend (June 13), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.74 failed to qualify (fourth alternate). He then went to Byron for its Manufacturer's Meet. In the opening round, his 6.75/182.18 beat Gary Bolger in the "Golddigger." In round two, Gene's 6.69/186.33 fell to the eventual winner, Don Prudhomme's 6.37/221. In July, Green Valley Raceway hosted the AHRA Nationals, and everyone felt that the clocks were "off." Six cars qualified with 6.2's or less, and Snow's car was sixth. He lost early in eliminations. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, he ran 6.57 to qualify #13. He beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the first round before getting crossed-up in round two and shutting down to 10.25 in a loss to Prudhomme's 6.33. At the end of July, he was at OCIR for the final PDA race. He ran his best number of the weekend, a 6.66 at 213, in the first round to beat Bill Chappelle, and in round two, a 6.73/216 got around Billy Graham's crossed up Monza. He beat Carl Swanson in the semifinals to go up against Don Prudhomme in the final. Gene smoked the tires to a 7.02/176.41 that finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.61/227. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.413/226.13 qualified #15. An opening round 6.42/217 beat Pat Foster's 6.44/223 in Joe Pisano's car, but an off-pace 7.71/133 lost to Prudhomme's 6.56/205 in round two. His next stop was at Green Valley Raceway for a ten-car show. His 6.53/227 advanced over a blower exploding Randy Lackey in the first round. But he lost to Graham in the semifinal. He was back at Green Valley for the second NHRA Division 4 race. He set Low ET in qualifying with a 6.22/209.79. In the opening round, a 6.30/222.22 defeated Bob Pickett's 6.46/187. Tom Hoover smoked the tires against him in the semifinal, and Gene's 6.26/215.31 advanced. He faced Graham in the final, and Billy shut off with problems while Snow ran 6.23/218.97 for the victory. In May, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 7.00/200.00 qualified #5. He went up against low qualifier Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in round one. Both smoked the tires, but Snow's 7.36/176.47 won over Beadle's 7.58/143. Snow's 6.88/202.70 beat Graham, who also smoked the tires in the semifinal. He faced Tripp Shumake in the final, and despite running a good (for the track conditions) 6.90/217, Gene finished runner-up to Shumake's 6.79/218. Early in June, he went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Snow's 6.80/195.66 qualified #5 for the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tom McEwen. Gene smoked the tires in their race and shut down to 10.86/77.79, while the "Goose" advanced with a 6.48/212. The following week (June 11), he qualified #9 at NHRA Columbus at 6.244/227.27 but lost to Prudhomme in round one, 6.12/239 to 6.200/213.77. His next stop was at Alamo Dragway near San Antonio on June 18 for the AHRA Nationals. Gene's 6.26 (Low ET) at 216 qualified #1. In the opening round, John Collins got crossed up against him, and Snow beat him with a 6.44/195. But in the semifinal, it was Gene who got out of shape, and his 7.76/114 lost to John White's 6.67/196. A pair of wins followed that. First, he won the fourth NHRA Division 4 race held at Riverside. He made two solos to reach the final, one over a broken Chip Woodall and the other an "odd-lot" solo due to the short field. In the final, he ran Low ET and Top Speed with his 6.33/194.39 getting the victory over Larry Brown's 6.85/155. Gene then won the AHRA Show-Me Nationals at Kansas City, where he set Low ET as well at 6.27. He almost took another win at the AHRA Ozark Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.51/198.67 that followed McEwen's 6.44/189. Larry Gould's SOHC Ford-powered car caught fire on the line in the first round, and Snow singled with a 6.80/166. Collins got out of shape against him in the semifinal, and Snow advanced at 6.62/200. He faced Graham in the final, and the two had a good, close race that saw Billy's 6.54/205 score the win over Gene's 6.58/191. Notes: Gene Snow launches under the watchful gaze of Buster Couch at the 1981 Western Regional WWCS meet at Green Valley. Dave Settles ran ACI. | Gene made his Top Fuel debut at the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.94. Low qualified Jerry Ruth dropped a 5.85/243 on his tire-smoking 6.16 in the first round. He next raced at Green Valley in April for the NHRA Western Regional points race. Snow qualified #3 at 6.15/208.33 and set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.00/225.56 beating Doug Kerhulas. In the semifinal, a 6.34/177 beat a tire-smoking Shirley Muldowney. Unfortunately for Gene, he broke and was unable to run the final, giving Gary Beck a single for the win. He ran another 6.00 at State Capitol Dragway on May 24 for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but it was good for first alternate for the eight-car show. He ran at the AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International on June 7, and a 6.15/225.57 qualified #3. A first-round 6.37/184.81 beat Jim Ford's 6.78/203, but in the semifinal he smoked the tires and Don Garlits' 6.00/238 beat him.

Notes: Gene qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a career best (to this point) 5.701 at 247.25. An off-pace 6.06/224.99 lost to Jody Smart's 5.96/241 in the first round. He qualified #2 again at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.72/250.00 (Top Speed), but once again lost to Smart in the first round. After qualifying so well, it was surprising that his 5.88/244.16 best failed to qualify (fifth alternate) at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. He also failed to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.97 best. It should be mentioned that these were both eight-car shows so the fields were tough. The 250.00 run at Gainesville on March 12, 1982, was the 14th entry into the NHRA 250 mph Club for Top Fuel. He also ran 240.00 at Green Valley.

Notes: Snow debuted his new Former Patrick and Connell car at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 5.765/235.60 qualified #9 and set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gary Beck. The race between the two didn't materialize as Snow's car broke. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car show with a first alternate 5.770/242.58. He qualified #9 at the Englishtown Summernationals at 5.718/245.90. He lost to Frank Bradley in round one with a shutoff 10.80-63. Gene ran 5.68/246 at ADRA West Salem, OH, on 7/22/84. He qualified #6 at Denver with a 5.779/241.93, but he lost to Danny Danell in round one, 6.89/161 to 7.83/88. Gene qualified #4 at Brainerd at 5.683/239.36 but again could not move past the first round, losing to Connie Kalitta, 5.98/205 to 6.010/208.33. Gene qualified #6 at Indy with a solid 5.646/247.93. In round one, he got revenge on Danell, 5.620/243.90 to 5.82/243. A consistent 5.625/240.64 took out Joe Amato in round two. But old nemesis Connie Kalitta ended Gene's day on a holeshot in the semis, stealing a 5.791/236 to 5.790/250.00 victory. Gene's next race was the World Finals, where he qualified #12 at 5.769/244.56. Notes: 240" car. We need to confirm the best times for 1986. This car was built and redone after Atlanta debut that year. Gene qualified #15 at the World Finals at 5.664/241.71. He lost to Don Garlits in round one. Listed mph from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9, but his best NHRA speed was 257.21 at Indy.

Notes: The 1985 car was run at the beginning of 1986. Started the season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.513/237.46. A first-round 5.52/238.09 beat Ed Moore, but in round two, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 10.19.69.49 that lost to Don Garlits' 5.58/257. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.57/244.83. An off-pace 5.84/231.12 lost to Joe Amato's 5.78/243 in the first round. Gene debuted a new car in Atlanta.

Joe Amato logged the first 5.0-second run with a 5.09, 287.72 (the best speed ever), but Gene bettered it on the last run of the day with a 5.089 at just 267.06 mph. Neither driver backed up their runs for records. Drag Racing List Volume 2, Number 9 Winter 87/88 shows 273.55 mph.

Notes: Gene debuted this new 300-inch Gene Gaddy machine at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. The car notably had a direct drive by NHRA Sonoma; did it have that from the beginning? Gene gets a lot of credit for driving that innovation in Top Fuel with this machine. He qualified #5 at Baton Rouge at 5.250/254.59 and defeated Rudy Toepke's off pace 6.67/132 with a 5.358/239.48 in round one. In round two, he lost to Darrell Gwynn, 5.19/274 to 5.298/257.95. Gene qualified #4 at Columbus at 5.238/273.80. In round one, he ran 5.216/268.49 to bury Jack Ostrander's 10-second pass. In the second round, Gene ran 5.269/254.23 to take out Dan Pastorini's 14-second shutoff. With a 5.210/256.55 defeat of Eddie Hill's 15-second shutoff, he reached the finals. That was the Low ET of the meet, but Gene then ran into the same problems as all his earlier competitors and shut off to a 14-second pass in the final, losing to Gwynn's 5.22/275. In Sanair, Gene qualified #3 at 5.217/279.06. In round one, he beat Ray Stutz with a career-best 5.162/252.26 to Ray's 5.43/261. IN round two, Gene stayed consistent with a 5.178/262.39 to 5.167/274.22 holeshot win over Eddie Hill. That put him into the final of the eight-car show against Dick LaHaie. Gene won a close race, 5.198/273.47 to 5.238/268.41. At Englishtown, Gene qualified #7 at 5.313/256.77. In round one, he beat Paul Smith, 5.374/250.97 to 5.48/249. He improved in round two to take out Gwynn, 5.297/258.32 to 5.34/263. Eddie Hill ended his day in the semis, 5.30/259, to an 18-second shutoff. Gene got even quicker at NHRA Sonoma, where he definitely had the direct-drive combo in the car. A 5.139/268.57 grabbed the number one qualifying slot. He set the Low ET of the Meet in round one with a 5.117/275.90 win over Gwynn's fouling 5.42/217. Gene beat Shirley Muldowney in round two, 5.193/270.59 to 5.34/272. He shut off to a 12-second pass in round three that sent eventual winner Joe Amato's 7.19/271 into the final. Gene continued to impress in Seattle, where his 5.067/277.34 qualified #2. In round one, he ran 5.115/240.96 to beat Stutz's 5.42/255. Gene took out Muldowney in round two, 5.109/273.30 to 5.19/276, and then took a 20-second coasting win when Frank Bradley broke. Darrell Gwynn got to him in the final, 5.25/266 to a 9.66 shutoff. Gene was the low qualifier in Brainerd with a 5.147/269.46 Low ET of the Meet effort. In round one, he beat Earl Whiting, 5.325/257.73 to 5.45/260. Gwynn beat him in round two, 5.25/266 to 5.332/217.02. Gene qualified #4 at Indy at 5.125/252.10 and took a 5.124/268.97 win over Whiting's shutoff in round one. In round two, Gene went 5.076/275.31 to take out Dennise Forcelle's shutoff run. He then really lowered the boom in the semis with a 5.006/276.66 Low ET of the Meet win over Darrell Gwynn's 5.21/275. But consistency bit him in the finals again, and Joe Amato got a 6.81-second win when Gene went 10.36. Gene delivered the promise that everyone seemed to expect after Indy when he ran the first NHRA four-second run at 4.997/279.06 at NHRA Houston on 10/06/88. That was the low qualifier for the event and was the second entry into the Crane Cams 4 Second Club for Top Fuel. Snow beat Gary Ormsby in round one, 5.083/272.64 to 5.15/266. In round two, he defeated Frank Hawley, 5.109/269.78 to 5.20/271. Eddie Hill, the first man in the fours, found them again in round three, and his 4.990/282.39 took out Gene's off pace 9.24. At Phoenix Fall, Gene qualified #9 at 5.238/262.00. Of course, that put him against low qualifier Eddie Hill, and he lost a 5.73/265 to 11.44 contest in round one. Gene was back to form at IHRA Ennis, where he was back in the fours again with a 4.974. At the NHRA World Finals, his 5.055/262.23 was the second qualifier after Joe Amato's Low ET effort of 5.016. Unfortunately, Gene fell off the pace in round one and lost to Frank Bradley, 5.83/255 to 7.178/122.53. It was a memorable year for Gene, who proved the direct-drive concept.
