Notes: Southern set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.47/212.76. In the semifinal, his off-pace 7.54 lost to the eventual winner's 6.68. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Gary qualified #2 with a 6.74/206.89. He improved to 6.65/209.79 in the first round over Rich Galli. In round two, he got a solo when Jim Rasmussen failed to show, and Southern advanced with a strong 6.69/208.81. In the third round (32-car field), he fouled away a 6.77/209.30 against Ken Hickson, who had been stuck in the sevens for the entire race. At the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Fremont on April 12, Gary ran 6.56/212.26 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round with a 6.46/213.77 while beating Don Clar. His 6.46 was the lowest time by an alcohol dragster thus far in '81. Unfortunately, he slowed to 6.84/201.34 in the semifinals, which wasn't enough to beat Jerry Darien's 6.60/211. Southern was also driving Bill Dunlap's Arias-powered alcohol Funny Car for most of the year, and he spent much more time behind the wheel of that car, nearly winning the NHRA World Championship in that class. He was doing double duty at the NHRA Sportsnationals. He qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field in Dale Smart's car with a 6.61/211.26. A 6.73/209.79 in the first round beat Steve Picou, but in round two, he fouled away a 6.67/198.23 against Darrell Gwynn, who won with a 6.60/207. It wasn't all bad as he drove Dunlap's car to the win in alcohol FC. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, his 6.99/198.23 qualified #4, and once again, he was doing double duty driving both cars. Another 6.99/198.67 in the first round beat Willard Buff, but in the semifinals, he lost a close one when his 7.00/198.67 lost to Bill Mullins' 7.01/196. After losing, he climbed back into the Funny Car and won. The Video Link shows Gary racing Joe Nowocinksi at OCIR on 5/09/81. |

Notes: Gary was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He led the alcohol Funny Car qualifiers with a 6.88/196.93. But in the first round, he was upset by the fifth qualifier, Jimmy Scott, who ran 6.85/203 to beat his 6.89/196.93. A week later (March 15), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.65/203.61 got him the #5 spot in the field, and in the first round, his 6.78/202.70 advanced when Don Holm broke. In round two, he broke, giving opponent Bob Gottschalk an easy ride into the semifinals. On March 22, he was at State Capitol for the second NHRA Division 4 race. Only four cars showed, so an easy 7.27/196.50 qualified #3. Southern set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.99 over Paul Smith's 7.03. In the final, he faced Jon Barrett, and a final 7.11 got Gary the victory over Jon's 7.54. Another win came on March 29 at Warner Robins for the second NHRA Division 2 race. Once again, only four cars showed. A 6.91/194.38 qualified #1, and a 7.00/194.38 in the first round, beat Howard Poepping. His final round victim was Wayne Mahaffey. Gary set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.84/200.89 for the win. His next stop was at Green Valley Raceway on April 5 for the NHRA Western Regional. Southern ran 6.77/202.70 to qualify first and then set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.72 that beat Ronnie Young's 7.00. But he broke on the line in the semifinals, advancing James Brown into the final. Gary didn't care where he raced as long as he was racing, and the following week (April 12), he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. He qualified #5 with a 6.73/205.94. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Chuck Beal. Chuck had problems and shut off in their race, while Gary advanced with a 6.73/204.54. Unfortunately, he took a little snooze in the semifinals, and his 6.66/207.37 lost to Scott's 6.71/209. He was in Atlanta on April 26 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field and lost in the first round, with his 7.05/193 losing to Jerry Gwynn's 6.73/204. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1981. |

Notes: In Jan '84, Gary was at Firebird's Drag Racing Superbowl. He ran 5.99/252.10 to become the first driver over 250 at Firebird. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 at a stout 5.925/254.95, but a first-round 6.57 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.21 in the "Blue Max," but both cars were disqualified. Southern crossed the centerline, and Beadle hit the wall! Mark Oswald had the resultant bye run in round two. The team attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but his 6.255/234.37 best was good for the fifth alternate. The team's next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There were only seventeen cars on hand for the sixteen-car field, so Gary didn't have to push too hard in qualifying, running 6.33 for the "bump" spot. He lost to Beadle in the opening round of eliminations. At NHRA Atlanta, he also ran 6.338/229.59, but that was only good for the #e alternate slot. At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, now run in May, he failed to qualify in the eight-car field with a 6.07 best. The bump was a 6.03. After qualifying ended, Gary made another pass and ran 5.86/251. Southern was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May. He qualified on the bump spot at 6.138/241.28, but eventual winner Billy Meyer's 5.88/248 beat Gary's 6.200/248.61 in the first round. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals and qualified #3 with a career-best(to this point),5.81 at 248. He broke against Al Segrini in the first round. He also lost early at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #10 with a 6.34 before losing to Dale Pulde in the opening round. Surprisingly, the team failed to qualify for the eight-car field at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 5.996/250.00 qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Tim Grose fouled against him in the first round, and Gary advanced with a 6.123/243.90. In round two, his 6.075/247.93 lost to eventual winner Mark Oswald's 5.85/243 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. The NHRA Summenationals at Englishtown were a disappointment as Gary failed to qualify, ending up as the first alternate with a 6.052/253.52. Gary also finished one slot outside the field in Brainerd with a 6.075/249.30 effort. The team had a rough outing at Indy, finishing as the last non-qualifier with a 6.312/246.57. The car always had the power. Where did the 5.73/259 numbers occur? We remember them but not the track or year. We need confirmation. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1984. | At the beginning of '84, Jeb Allen helped with the clutch, and his name was on the back quarter panel for a short time. I saw the 604 number at the Winternationals and thought it was Kenney Goodell. The announcer said Dunlap had 500 gallons of nitro and several motors. Gary Southern's last go in this car was at the Oct. 5th FC show at Carlsbad; saw it myself. ND-covered meet. In eliminations GS ran an rnon-and-off 6.64/233. Don't recall the other lane, rn'Goose/Grose, all Corvette Final. He drove the Dave Korzan Corvette at the Finals. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Gary drove the Dave Korzan car at the World Finals after driving for Bill Dunlap for most of the NHRA tour. He was a DNQ at 6.539/223.88. | Short WB, 118 white 'Vette, said 'Dave Korzan' on the side, not 125 wheelbase like McEwen's or Grose's Corvettes. Last session Saturday? Grose also did a wheelstand, and ran off-and-on 6.07. Randy Troxel, TF, 5.75, r/h lane, last chance. Then Shumake in the In-N-Out Omni's lights-swerving 6.39. - Joe Moore | Car had Bill Spevacek on the windows but had Gary Southern 604 on the sides. - Danny White |

Notes: This is the former 1973 Soapy Sales Buttera-built Dodge Dart, after a few updates along the way. Bret Goethe updated the Buttera chassis, mounted the Omni body, and formed the tin work. | George was a firefighter in Denver and drove the car, while brother Dan eventually went on to drive the Jungle Fever and Mile High Express nitro floppers in the 1980s. |
