Notes: Ronnie Sox only ran funny cars from 1965 to 1966, but he was one of the premier early funny car stars. After success with a Mercury A/FX Comet in 1964, Sox & Martin got backing from Chrysler for 1965. This car was one of the six built at Amblewagon to full AWB specs prior to the 1965 season using an AeroChem acid-milled body. | Monikered 'Paper Tiger,' Sox was the most feared match-race pilot of that era, often out-shifting TorqueFlite-equipped competitors. Weakened by acid-dipping, this car bent on the trailer en route to the AHRA Winter Nationals, requiring a major thrash at a local dealership, and bent again during eliminations. Sox dominated the XS gas ranks with this car before switching to fuel in late summer, running 2400/2700 pound trim. It was the first unblown door car in the nine-second range, running 9.98 at York in April 1965. Many who witnessed Sox's intense driving style consider this Paper Tiger the ultimate of the 1965 Chrysler-sponsored AWB cars. | It was sold to the team of Buckeye & Vernon in 1966. They campaigned it two seasons, but the acid-weakened body continued to deteriorate. The team eventually crushed the car at their facility in 1967 while salvaging some unique parts like the unique forward-mount magnesium K-frame engine cross-member, which ended up in an altered project. Notes: Second of two 1965 race cars, this A990 car was received by the team in May 1965, raced in S/S at the NHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Dubbed 'Paper Tiger Too,' it was converted into match race trim soon after as the team's efforts and busy schedule allowed. Run primarily on gas, Sox used it as a back-up car or at events where he wanted to drive in two classes. Never acid dipped, it survived largely intact, ended up on the street in Detroit, and was found and saved by Steve Atwell and Mike Guffey. Restored, now in the collector of Todd Werner. Image is of restored car.

Notes: Ronnie Sox only ran funny cars from 1964 to 1966, but he was one of the premier early funny car stars. Sox & Martin began their funny car career with an A/FX Comet. They were one of the American teams that visited England in 1964. In 1965, Sox & Martin got backing from Chrysler and a new altered-wheelbase Plymouth. It was in this car that Sox & Martin started running nitro in the tank. In 1966, the evolution of the funny car was happening at such a pace that the cars built in '64 and '65 were too old. Sox & Martin sold the old car to Buckeye & Vernon, a team that bought many old Sox & Martin cars. Sox & Martin then built a new Chrysler backed Barracuda with an injected 426 Chrysler Hemi backed by a 4-speed transmission. Jake King tuned the injected nitro machine to eight-second times. The Barracuda's best times were an 8.59 at 159.85. There were rumors of Sox & Martin using the highly volatile rocket fuel hydrazine in match races. When Chrysler stopped backing early funny cars, Sox & Martin went back to Super Stock racing. Ronnie Sox became a legend in drag racing, as he pioneered and won in several classes across a 40-year career. These included A/FX, Funny Car, Super Stock, Pro Stock, Pro Modified, and Pro Stock Truck. | Sox had a good track record in '66 despite those "pesky" flip-top Comets. He faced off against Don Nicholson for a best three out of five at Cecil County on April 3. "Dyno" won the first race with a 9.50/155 to Sox's 9.62/148.76. In the second race, Don missed a shift and Sox won with a 9.18/153.58. Don came back to win the third and fourth races with his first eight-second runs while Sox hit a best of 9.17/153.84. He did better at a best of three match race at Capitol on April 13. He beat Del Heinelt, driver of the "Seaton Shaker," three straight with a best of 9.21/153.84. He lost three straight to Bill Lawton at Aquasco on April 24. He fouled in the first race and a 9.62/141.50 could do nothing against Lawton's 8.97/152. He ran even worse in the last race, losing with a 10.02/142.38. On May 13, Sox bested Bud Shellenberger at Vargo in a best of five match with a best of 9.10/150. Ronnie set Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.74/159.85 at Cecil County's Factory Showdown on May 22. He ran those numbers in the first round, while beating Bob Harrop. In the second round, he got the odd lot single and ran 9.34. In the semifinal, he faced Phil Bonner's Falcon. Unfortunately, his motor blew on the line, giving Phil a solo into the final. He won the York US 30 Stocker Meet on June 11. He beat Bud Faubel in the first round, with a 9.17/156. He improved to an 8.73/156 in round two over Mel Perry's Chevelle. In the semifinal, he got the odd lot single. Sox met Huston Platt in the final and he beat the Nova with an 8.69/156.71 to earn the title. He was back at US 30 on June 25 for a best of three match race against Eddie Schartman. Ronnie won it with two straight wins. He ran a career best (to this point) 8.64/157.34 in the first race and a strong 8.67/155.44 won the match in the second race. The next day (June 26) he faced off against Nicholson in a best of five match at Aquasco. Sox had lots of problems with the 'Cuda not running close to the eights it had the day before. In the first race, a 9.42 lost to Don's 8.58/163. In the second race, Sox slowed to a 9.53 while "Dyno" sped up to a track record 8.37/163. Don wrapped up the match by winning the third race with another track record 8.35/166 over Ronnie's 9.66/148.76. At the end of July, the team was at Cecil County for the Cars Magazine Super Stock International. Sox competed in the 2400 lb. fuel Funny Car class. He qualified second with an 8.92 and went on to win the class with a final round 8.97/158.73. On August 14 he faced off against Malcolm Durham's Corvair in a best of five match race at Aquasco. Ronnie won the first race with an 8.83 over Malcolm's 9.28 and the second race was almost a repeat of the first, with Sox's 8.87/158.45 beating Durham's 9.21/155. In the third race, Malcolm grabbed a holeshot and held on for the win with a 9.27/152 beating the Cuda's better 9.15/150.25. After that, race, Sox had to forfeit the race due to a blown engine and Malcolm won the match by running two solo passes. He also lost a best of three match to Dick Landy on August 27 at 75/80 Drag-A-Way. Sox fouled in the first race and he got beaten by Landy's track records (8.63/163.63) in the second race. Sox and Martin raced in the A/XS class at Indy for the US Nationals in September. Sox ran a best of 8.64 before fouling against Lawton in the class final. The following week (September 11), Sox won a best of three match against Cecil County Yother at Island Dragway. Cecil County was late arriving so Sox ran a solo for the first win. He set a track speed record of 169.17 on the solo pass. When Cecil County showed up, the two raced and Sox won with an 8.59/167. In the third race, Ronnie won again with an 8.7/169.17. Later in September, he fell to Lawton at a match at Capitol.

Notes: Said to have run some Hydrazine. Set Maple Grove track record 8.66 in August | Sox was at Indy in September for the NHRA US Nationals. He made it into the finals of the A/XS class after running a best of 8.64, but he fouled in the final against Bill Lawton. He was at Island Dragway on September 11 for a best of three match race against Cecil Yother in the "Melrose Missile.” Cecil was late arriving so the track told Sox to make a solo for the crowd. Ronnie reset the track's speed record to 169.17 on the run. After Yother showed up, Sox ran 8.59/167 to win the first race and the match, but the two lined up for one more and Sox again won, running 8.7 at 169.17 again.

Notes: In '70 Sox ran 9.79 at Gators, 9.86 at Super Stock Nats, 9.93 at Indy, 9.95 at World Finals, and 10.23/136.18 to win AHRA Springs at Bristol. Low qualifier at NHRA Ontario 11/21/70 at 9.897/139.53. We need to confirm it was in the Cuda and not the Duster. | This team dominated the first two seasons of Pro Stock. Buddy Martin oversaw the booking and business end of the deal while Jake King was the engine builder. Ronnie Sox could handle a four-speed like no other. He was a great driver. The '70 season started with the team winning the AHRA Winternationals. Sox beat Don Grotheer, Ed Miller, and Bill Bagshaw to reach the final where his 10.08/137.61 beat the Camaro of Mike Fons for the title. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Sox qualified #1 with a 10.00/139.10 and made his way into the final to meet Bill Jenkins. The white Camaro got the win with a 9.99/139 over Ronnie's 10.12/138.46. OCIR held its Pro Stock Championships the following week and Sox set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 9.86. A 9.96 in round one, beat Fons, but he fouled against Wally Booth in round two. Jenkins and Sox would meet again in the final at the NHRA Gatornationals on February 15. They qualified one-two with Sox's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 9.79/144.48 leading the way. A 9.94 in the first round, beat Dick Loehr's Maverick while another 9.94 in round two beat the team's future driver, Herb McCandless. In the semifinals, Sox faced off with Don Carlton driving a second Sox and Martin car. Ronnie ran 9.88 to advance to the final. The final saw Jenkins get out on Sox and his 9.90/138 beat the 'Cuda's quicker 9.84/138.88. The two had a best of five match race at Island Dragway on April 12 with Sox coming out on top. Ronnie won the first race with a 9.96/139.62 when Jenkins missed a shift, but Bill evened the score in the second race when his 9.94/140 beat Sox's 9.95/138.67. Ronnie then won the next two races and the match with times of 9.89/139 and 9.85/139. At the third AHRA Grand American race, the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, Sox set Low ET in the semifinals with a 9.82 while beating Jenkins. In the final, he faced the strong Ford of Don Nicholson. At this race Sox had the advantage and a final round 9.92/139.10 got him the victory over Don's 10.12/136. Another win came at the next AHRA race at Frontier International. A 10.29/136.57 qualified #1 and he soloed in the first round, when Grotheer was unable to run. In the second round, he only needed a 10.69 to advance and in the semifinals, he beat Jim Hayter's Camaro with a 10.31/136.77. Another Camaro faced him in the finals, this one was driven by Gary Kimball. Sox set Low ET with a final Round 10.25 for the win over Gary's 10.42. York US 30 hosted the Super Stock Nationals and Sox was a sure threat to win. Everyone thought that except for Wally Booth. Ronnie set Low ET and Top Speed in his semifinal win over Dave Lyall with 9.86/138.46 times. In the final he faced Booth. Booth's Camaro had been running 10.0's with a best of 9.97 so he was definitely the underdog. Every dog has his day and Wally got a good leave and his 10.00/136 held on to win over Sox's 9.95/138.03. After that, hiccup it was back to winning. On May 26 he won the AHRA Grandnationals at Detroit stopping Nicholson in the final. On June 7 he won the AHRA Springnationals at Bristol. There he qualified #2 with a 10.16 behind Dick Landy's 10.13. The two made their way into the final where Ronnie pulled a holeshot and his 10.23/136.45 held off Landy's quicker 10.21/135. A week later (June 14), he won the NHRA Springnationals at Dallas. He had set Low ET in qualifying #1 at 9.93. A first Round 10.01 beat Loehr while in round two he advanced easily. A third-round (32-car field)10.01 beat Nicholson and in the semifinals his 10.03 beat Lee Smith's 'Cuda. Once again, he met with Booth in the final. This time Sox got the win easy with a 10.03/136.77 when Wally blew the clutch out of his car. During this time, match races between Sox and Jenkins brought in the fans. Sox faced Jenkins at Maple Grove and won with a best of 9.80/137.61 and at Blaney, Sox won two straight with times of 10.06 (track record) at 137 and 10.10/137.19. On July 1, Capitol held a Pro Stock race and Sox finished runner-up to Nicholson. Early in July, Martin, Michigan's US 131 held a Pro Stock race. Both Sox and Jenkins attended. In eliminations, Sox opened with a 9.90 (Low ET) at 137.40 over Loehr. In the semifinals, his 10.00/137.40 beat Ron Hutter's Camaro. This put the two Pros in the final again. Unfortunately, Sox fouled while Bill got the victory with a 10.07/137. On July 12, Sox was at Indianapolis for the third NHRA Division 3 race. He got a bit of a surprise when Arlen Vanke beat him in the semifinals. A match race between Sox and Nicholson was held at Lakeland and "Dyno" won. Don's Maverick was getting stronger as the year progressed and it was reported that of all the cars facing Sox, "Dyno" was the one that beat him most often. It wasn't Nicholson who stopped him at the NHRA Summernationals. Ronnie qualified #2 with a 9.99/138.03, but in the first round, his 10.29/135.54 lost to Dick Humbert's 10.11/136 in Billy Stepp's car. It was Nicholson who kept Ronnie out of the winner's circle at Epping for the AHRA Grand American held there. "Dyno's" Maverick was the only car in the nines there and in the final, he beat Sox who had run a best of 10.06 with a 9.88/139. Nicholson may have stopped Sox at the next AHRA race at New York National as well, but after resetting both ends of the AHRA Pro Stock record (9.78/140.62), rain postponed the race and "Dyno" left. After the rainout, Sox won the race with ease. A final round 9.84/139.21 beat Carmen Rotonda's Camaro. At the NHRA US Nationals, a 9.93/138.03 qualified #3 in the 32-car field. Only four cars qualified in the nines and in the first round, his 9.99 beat Fon's 10.16. Unfortunately, in round two his transmission broke on his shift into third. This gave Ed Hedrick an easy 10.34 pass into round three. It was not all bad for the Sox and Martin team as their Duster driven by McCandless went on to win the race. Another match race against Jenkins was held at Phenix City. This was to be a best of five. Sox won the first race with a 10.15/136.36 over Bill's 10.32/134, but the Grump came back to win the second race with a 10.23/136 when Sox actually missed a shift and slowed to 11.33/86.33. Sox came back to win the next two races and the match with runs of 10.06/136.19 and 9.97/137.16, just missing Nicholson's track records of 9.97/140. "Dyno" and Sox had a good showing at Atco for NHRA's Division 1 final. Don had reset both ends of the NHRA Pro Stock record to 9.81/139.31 and he looked like he was going to be tough to beat. But in the final, the Maverick broke and Sox scored the win with 10.01/136.77 times. Another win came on October 15 at Dallas for the NHRA World Finals. The "Cuda qualified #2 with a 9.95 and Sox worked his way into the semifinals where his 10.03/136.77 beat Jim Hayter's strong Camaro. This set up a final with Vanke who also ran 10.03 in his semifinal win. It was a good race, but Sox's 10.00/136.36 beat Vanke's 10.06/137 for the title.

Notes: Won every NHRA national event in '71 except the Summernationals. Ran 9.53 at Gators, 9.54 and 9.55 at Ontario, 9.56/143.54 at Indy, 9.56/141.06 at Bristol Springs, and 9.82/141.78 at Bristol All Americans. AHRA record holder at 9.77 in January 1971. | The tough just got tougher in '71. If the "Sox and Martin" team seemed unstoppable in '70, the '71 season was even worse for their competition. At the NHRA Winternationals, their 9.81/141.50 took the top qualifying position for the 32-car field. In qualifying, the closest car to them was Herb McCandless (in a Sox and Martin car), way back in the #2 spot at 9.94. Only four cars in total ran in the "nines" during qualifying. Sox stayed in the 9.80s through eliminations, running a 9.89 in round three to take out Chevy favorite Bill Jenkins at 10.03. In the semifinals, his 9.85 beat John Petrie. He faced a strong-running Wally Booth in the final. Booth had only qualified #15, but he was getting stronger and stronger during eliminations. He ran 9.92 and 9.85 in the last two rounds leading up to the final. But in the final, the Camaro slowed to a 10.02 in a loss to Sox's 9.86/141.28. It was then off to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where Sox ran 9.78/141.73 in qualifying. The only car that ran quicker during qualifying was Don Carlton, who drove Billy Stepp's Dodge to a 9.75/141. But Carlton fouled in the first round, and Sox ran 9.77/141.28 to beat Bobby Yowell. Ronnie set Low ET in round two with a 9.73/141.73 to beat Don Grotheer. He went up against Bob Lambeck, who was still driving his old Dart in the semifinals. Lambeck's best run had only been a 10.02, so Sox had him by almost three-tenths. But even the best make mistakes, and Sox pulled a boo-boo, fouling away a 9.75/141.50 while Lambeck motored into the final with another 10.02. In mid-March, the team was at Aquasco for a best-of-three match against Al Joniec. Al's Maverick was not up to speed, running a 10.26 best, while Sox won all three races with times of 9.54/142.63, 9.61/142.85, and 9.54/142.18. The following week (March 21), they were at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Sox qualified #1 with Low ET and a track record 9.57 at 143.76. An opening round 9.68/142.40 beat Melvin Yow, and in round two, Arlen Vanke's 9.79 fell to Sox's 9.63/141.95. Booth's strong 9.84/140 Camaro effort lost to a 9.61/142.18 in the semifinals, and Sox was into the final where he would face Carlton, who was now driving the "Motown Missile." Carlton was running well. He qualified #2 with a 9.60/142 and had run another 9.60 in his semifinal race. But Carlton must have been a little worried in his final round race with Sox as he missed a shift (something he rarely did) and slowed to a 10.31 loss to Ronnie's 9.60/141.95. On April 4, Phenix City hosted the NHRA Division 2 opener, and Sox reset the NHRA record to 9.72. He also won the race with a final round 9.84 over Grotheer's 9.96. It was then off to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Sox's 9.63/142 qualified #1, almost two-tenths ahead of second qualifier Yow at 9.82. He then beat Joe Satmary and Roy Hill before running 9.62/143.31 in the semifinals to beat Reid Whisnant. He faced Yow in the final, and there was no stopping the "Sox and Martin" team on this day as Sox's track record 9.57 at 143.76 beat Yow, who slowed to 12.99 when he saw he had no chance of catching the 'Cuda. Near the end of April, Union Grove held its Pro Stock Championships. Sox also won that race with a final round 9.59/141 over Vanke's 9.72/141. Sox then won the Division 3 race at Indianapolis with a final round 9.69. Milan hosted four Pro Stock cars, and the "Sox and Martin" team was one of them. In the first race, Sox's 9.62/142 beat Jenkins' 9.85/139. In his second race, the 'Cuda's 9.69/137 beat Booth's 9.87/133. And Sox made it three wins with a final 9.60/142 over Stuart McDade's troubled 10.90 in Stepp's Challenger. On May 22, Sox went to Muncie for a best-of-three match with Chevy "kingpin" "Grumpy" Jenkins. The Chevy pro was not in the same ballpark on this day as his 9.96 best paled compared to Sox, who won all three races with runs of 9.80 twice, and a final round 9.75/143.62. The next day he was at Greensboro to take on Ford's best, "Dyno Don" Nicholson. Once again, Sox took the match three straight. Late in May, these two would have a rematch, and it turned out the same. Nicholson spun a main bearing in his SOHC Maverick after losing the first race with a 10.08/134 to Sox's 9.80/139.31. Sox then ran a local competitor who filled in for "Dyno" and ran 9.77 to win the match. He came back out to make a third pass but blew the clutch and slowed to 13.33. Notes: Ronnie ran 9.652 at NHRA Pomona CA 2/72. He won the IHRA Summernationals at Dragway 42 at 9.42/149.50 over Nicholson at 9.70/139.31. He also ran 9.411/146.57 at the Tulsa PRA race. Ronnie ran 9.39/145.63 at IHRA Rockingham 5/72 to set the World and IHRA record (per S&M ad). He ran 9.50 at Palm Beach. The best times in the Cuda in NHRA national event competition were 9.527/144.49 at Gainesville. Sox brought the Duster to Columbus in June, but it was too late to get through tech, so he ran the Cuda. So, the Rockingham times were in the Cuda for sure, but what about the Dragway 42 speed? Notes: Ron's 9.146 at 150.00 at the Gatornationals was his first appearance at a major NHRA National Event since July 1972! The car was still using a manual 4-speed, and Ronnie fell to the Gapp & Roush Pinto, 9.05 to 9.21. Also ran 9.23 at Martin. | After dominating the Pro Stock class for the first two seasons, Sox and Martin were anxious to get back to their winning ways. But '73 was not a good season for the team. Ronnie qualified #1 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals with a 9.17. Unfortunately, he hurt his good engine and had to put in a backup for eliminations. In the first round, he ran 9.40/145.86 to beat a sleepy Bill Jenkins, who ran a quicker 9.25/146 in losing. Sox beat Dick Landy in round two before losing to eventual winner Don Nicholson in the semifinals. The team's next appearance came at Lakeland in March for the IHRA Winternationals, where a 9.31 qualified #3 in the field. He got an easy first-round win, and in round two, another 9.31 at 145.63 beat Bruce Walker's 9.51/140 in Barry Setzer's Vega. Sox got another easy win in the semifinals when Don Grotheer's Duster broke. He faced Don Carlton in the final, and despite running 9.29/146.00, he finished runner-up to Carlton's 9.19/141. Two weeks later (March 18), they were at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Ronnie ran 9.146 to qualify #3, and an opening-round 9.15 beat Roy Hill's similar Duster at 9.36. He faced another Duster in round two; this one was Reid Whisnant's. Sox ran 9.20/147 to put Reid's 9.33 on the trailer. In the semifinals, he went up against Wayne Gapp's Pinto. The 351-powered Pintos were the cars to beat in early '73, and Sox's 9.21 didn't stand a chance against Wayne's 9.05. Being very unhappy with the NHRA rules, the team spent a lot of time match racing and running IHRA events which gave the Hemis a more favorable weight brake. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Sox qualified #4 with a 9.07/150. He improved to a 9.01/150.00 to beat Max Hurley in the first round. A round two, 9.11/148.27 beat Wilbert Smallwood, but in the semifinals, his 9.11/148.27 (again) lost to Landy's 9.08/149. The team went to Muncie on May 20 for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where Ronnie qualified #2 with a 9.35, but he lost early. In June, the USRT held a race at Maple Grove. Sox and Martin were there and won their first-round race with a 9.31/144.92, but the Duster broke in round two and slowed to an 11.37/82.94 loss to eventual winner Gapp's 9.29/141. They stopped off at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where Sox qualified #12 with a 9.48. In the first round, his 9.51/144.92 lost to Butch Leal's 9.48/145. A week later (June 17), they were at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Sox's 9.42 qualified #5 for the show, and in round two, he even got some "revenge" on Leal, who had beaten him the week before. Ronnie cut a great light, and his 9.55 beat Leal's quicker 9.46. Unfortunately, Ronnie lost to eventual winner Carlton in the semifinals. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. It was a 32-car show, and almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify. Ronnie's 9.32 got him the #14 spot. He got past Sam Gianino in the first round, and then picked up to a 9.19/147.29 in the second round to beat Carlton's 9.28/147. But in round three, Jenkins' 9.06/150 stopped Sox's 9.20/147.54 from advancing. Another USRT event was run on August 1, and Sox made it into the semifinals before his 9.24 lost to Wally Booth's 9.22 AMC. The team went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where Sox qualified #13, but the team didn't run in eliminations as alternate Oscar Roberts took their place. At the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, a 9.33/146.10 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. In round one, Ronnie Manchester lost to Sox's 9.26/146.34, but a second-round 9.36/147.54 lost to Paul Blevins' 9.19/148. They were certainly overdue for a win. The next big event was the PHR Championships at Martin, Mich. Sox lasted until round two before his off-pace 9.63/118.57 lost to Leal's 9.17/149. The AHRA National Challenge race was no better for the team. Sox's 9.23/147.54 qualified #11 in the 32-car show, and a 9.25/148 advanced in round one, but he fouled against Melvin Yow in round two. The following week, they were at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. It was another 32-car field, and Sox qualified #9 with a 9.19/149.25. A 9.23 in round one, beat Carmen Rotonda, but a second-round 9.21 lost to Bob Glidden's 9.05. Back at Bristol on September 16 for the IHRA All-American Nationals, the team seemed to have gained back some strength. Ronnie qualified #4 with a 9.13 and an easy 9.30 in round one, advanced when Hill's Duster broke on the line. In round two, he beat former teammate Herb McCandless. In the semifinals, he and Nicholson had a great race, with both running 9.16. But "Dyno" got to the finish first.
