Notes: Ronnie ran 9.652 at NHRA Pomona CA 2/72. He won the IHRA Summernationals at Dragway 42 at 9.42/149.50 over Nicholson at 9.70/139.31. He also ran 9.411/146.57 at the Tulsa PRA race. Ronnie ran 9.39/145.63 at IHRA Rockingham 5/72 to set the World and IHRA record (per S&M ad). He ran 9.50 at Palm Beach. The best times in the Cuda in NHRA national event competition were 9.527/144.49 at Gainesville. Sox brought the Duster to Columbus in June, but it was too late to get through tech, so he ran the Cuda. So, the Rockingham times were in the Cuda for sure, but what about the Dragway 42 speed? We need to validate that it was run in the Cuda and not the Duster, as the IHRA Summernationals were run on August 20, 1972. Photo: Hemmings Muscle Machines (Nov. 2007): p. 37 - MB |

Notes: Ron's 9.146 at 150.00 at the Gatornationals was his first appearance at a major NHRA National Event since July 1972! The car was still using a manual 4-speed, and Ronnie fell to the Gapp & Roush Pinto, 9.05 to 9.21. Also ran 9.23 at Martin. | After dominating the Pro Stock class for the first two seasons, Sox and Martin were anxious to get back to their winning ways. But '73 was not a good season for the team. Ronnie qualified #1 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals with a 9.17. Unfortunately, he hurt his good engine and had to put in a backup for eliminations. In the first round, he ran 9.40/145.86 to beat a sleepy Bill Jenkins, who ran a quicker 9.25/146 in losing. Sox beat Dick Landy in round two before losing to eventual winner Don Nicholson in the semifinals. The team's next appearance came at Lakeland in March for the IHRA Winternationals, where a 9.31 qualified #3 in the field. He got an easy first-round win, and in round two, another 9.31 at 145.63 beat Bruce Walker's 9.51/140 in Barry Setzer's Vega. Sox got another easy win in the semifinals when Don Grotheer's Duster broke. He faced Don Carlton in the final, and despite running 9.29/146.00, he finished runner-up to Carlton's 9.19/141. Two weeks later (March 18), they were at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Ronnie ran 9.146 to qualify #3, and an opening-round 9.15 beat Roy Hill's similar Duster at 9.36. He faced another Duster in round two; this one was Reid Whisnant's. Sox ran 9.20/147 to put Reid's 9.33 on the trailer. In the semifinals, he went up against Wayne Gapp's Pinto. The 351-powered Pintos were the cars to beat in early '73, and Sox's 9.21 didn't stand a chance against Wayne's 9.05. Being very unhappy with the NHRA rules, the team spent a lot of time match racing and running IHRA events which gave the Hemis a more favorable weight brake. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Sox qualified #4 with a 9.07/150. He improved to a 9.01/150.00 to beat Max Hurley in the first round. A round two, 9.11/148.27 beat Wilbert Smallwood, but in the semifinals, his 9.11/148.27 (again) lost to Landy's 9.08/149. The team went to Muncie on May 20 for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where Ronnie qualified #2 with a 9.35, but he lost early. In June, the USRT held a race at Maple Grove. Sox and Martin were there and won their first-round race with a 9.31/144.92, but the Duster broke in round two and slowed to an 11.37/82.94 loss to eventual winner Gapp's 9.29/141. They stopped off at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where Sox qualified #12 with a 9.48. In the first round, his 9.51/144.92 lost to Butch Leal's 9.48/145. A week later (June 17), they were at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Sox's 9.42 qualified #5 for the show, and in round two, he even got some "revenge" on Leal, who had beaten him the week before. Ronnie cut a great light, and his 9.55 beat Leal's quicker 9.46. Unfortunately, Ronnie lost to eventual winner Carlton in the semifinals. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. It was a 32-car show, and almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify. Ronnie's 9.32 got him the #14 spot. He got past Sam Gianino in the first round, and then picked up to a 9.19/147.29 in the second round to beat Carlton's 9.28/147. But in round three, Jenkins' 9.06/150 stopped Sox's 9.20/147.54 from advancing. Another USRT event was run on August 1, and Sox made it into the semifinals before his 9.24 lost to Wally Booth's 9.22 AMC. The team went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where Sox qualified #13, but the team didn't run in eliminations as alternate Oscar Roberts took their place. At the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, a 9.33/146.10 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. In round one, Ronnie Manchester lost to Sox's 9.26/146.34, but a second-round 9.36/147.54 lost to Paul Blevins' 9.19/148. They were certainly overdue for a win. The next big event was the PHR Championships at Martin, Mich. Sox lasted until round two before his off-pace 9.63/118.57 lost to Leal's 9.17/149. The AHRA National Challenge race was no better for the team. Sox's 9.23/147.54 qualified #11 in the 32-car show, and a 9.25/148 advanced in round one, but he fouled against Melvin Yow in round two. The following week, they were at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. It was another 32-car field, and Sox qualified #9 with a 9.19/149.25. A 9.23 in round one, beat Carmen Rotonda, but a second-round 9.21 lost to Bob Glidden's 9.05. Back at Bristol on September 16 for the IHRA All-American Nationals, the team seemed to have gained back some strength. Ronnie qualified #4 with a 9.13 and an easy 9.30 in round one, advanced when Hill's Duster broke on the line. In round two, he beat former teammate Herb McCandless. In the semifinals, he and Nicholson had a great race, with both running 9.16. But "Dyno" got to the finish first. |

Notes: Also, legal pro stock. Ran as B/A with comp number 335. | Sox was at New London Dragstrip in Virginia for a best-of-three-match race against Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Monza. In their first race, Sox's 8.58/158 beat Larry, who blew his engine and was done for the day. Lee Edwards then took his place as the Chevy competition for the Colt. But Ronnie won the next two matches with runs of 8.62/159 and 8.64/159. |

Notes: Ronnie Sox debuted this car in the A/FX class at Pomona. He did not race the car at Darlington for IHRA's season-opening Winternationals, nor was he at Rockingham in April for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. But by the time the IHRA tour got to Atlanta in May for the Dixie Nationals, Sox and Martin decided to enter IHRA's Mountain-Motored Pro Stock class. Sox set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with an 8.33/164.53. He beat Bobby Yowell in the first round and also won his second-round race, but broke and was unable to return for the semifinals. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Ronnie ran 8.53 to qualify #5. An opening round 8.54/158.73 beat Terry Adams' 8.79/152. In round two, his 8.51 beat Harry Del Prete's 8.68, and a semifinal 8.53/158.17 stopped Pat Musi's 8.58/160. In the final, he faced the "killer car" on the IHRA circuit, the Vega of Lee Edwards. Lee had been running 8.3s throughout eliminations to reach the final. The final was no different as his 8.36/163.93 beat Sox's 8.52/154.90. The team was not at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. On August 16, Budds Creek held its Mountain Motor Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and Sox's 8.32 qualified #5. He faced low qualifier Edwards in the first round, and Sox's off-pace 8.80/157 lost to Lee's 8.10. A few days later (August 20), Sox was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. Eighteen cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car field, and Ronnie's 8.47 qualified #3. But in the first round, Roy Hill had a great leave and ran slower than Sox but won. Also ran as an A/FX. This car was the former gold Don Carlton car and Zorian's Colt in 1977 that was rebodied in 78. Number 9 in IHRA 1978. |

Notes: Sox and Martin were running well in '79 with their new small-block program. They qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.65/157.06. An opening round 8.69/155.97 beat Billy Walsh, but the Omni broke against Roy Hill in round two. Things went much better at the Gatornationals. Sox qualified the car #6 with an 8.65/156.79. In the first round, his 8.63/155.17 beat Ronnie Manchester's 8.96/152. In round two, Sox improved to 8.61/155 to beat Larry Lombardo's 8.62/156 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. Another 8.65/155 beat Don Campanello and set up the first all-Mopar NHRA Pro Stock final since the '73 Springnationals. Unfortunately, Sox was the underdog as Bob Glidden had been running 8.5's with ease. Ronnie tried to cut the light to close in the final and fouled away an 8.75/156.25 while Glidden sailed past with an 8.53 at only 147. The next event on the NHRA trail was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Sox qualified #4 at the rain-delayed event and lost to Wally Booth in the first round. Things didn't go too well at the NHRA Springnationals, either. An 8.78 qualified #11, and he lost to Frank Iaconio in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and Ronnie qualified #7 with a 9.34/144.92. In the opening round, both he and eventual winner Randy Humphrey ran 9.35 (Sox at 144.46), but Randy got the win. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, an 8.72 qualified the team in the #10 spot. Sox lost to Iaconio in the first round. They did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but they were at Indianapolis for the US Nationals. Sox's 8.76/154.90 barely qualified (#15), and his first-round 8.89/154.17 got knocked out by Humphrey's 8.88/151. The next race was the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle. Ronnie qualified #7 with an 8.600/156.24. A first-round 8.64/155.17 beat Brad Yuill and another 8.60/155.70 took out Don Nicholson in round two. He came up against a wall in the form of Glidden in the semifinals, and despite running a strong 8.62/155.97, he lost to Glidden's 8.47/157. The NHRA season came to a close at Ontario for the World Finals. There, Ronnie's 8.82/153.84 qualified #10. His season came to an end in the first round, where his 8.84/153.06 lost to Iaconio's 8.70/152. In NHRA points, the team finished tenth. They sold their NHRA legal Omni to Jerry Hurley in December and decided to run big-inch IHRA events for '80. Also 8.659 at Winters and 8.63 156.79 at Gators, where he was Runner up. Also 8.62 155.97 and 8.64 155.17 NHRA Seattle Fallnationals. |

Notes: IHRA and match racer. Number 4 in IHRA. Sox used a Powerglide in match races. | Sox started the season by winning the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. He qualified #2 with an 8.08/168.53. In the semifinals, he stopped Roy Hill with an 8.16 and a final round 8.13/168.53 beat Sam Carroll's 8.37/166 in Pete Robertson's Monza. He won the next IHRA race as well, the Pro-Am Nationals at Rockingham. He qualified #3 for the sixteen-car field with an 8.09 and in the opening round, beat William Paris. A second round 8.14 beat Keith Albritten and in the semifinal, he beat Rickie Smith (who had Ran IHRA's first seven second run in the first round) with an 8.13/168 to Rickie's 8.17/170. In the final, he beat John Brumley. Also in April, he was at Englishtown's Mountain Motor Nationals where he qualified #3 in the eight-car field with an 8.13/166.97. In the first round, he beat Carlton Phillips with an 8.12/166.89. An 8.07/168.13 in the semifinals beat Pat Musi's quicker 8.00/173. He faced Pat Patterson in the final and although he ran a good 8.16/168.22, Pat's run was even better as his 8.07/170 gave Sox the runner-up spot. After winning the first two IHRA events, it was a bit of a surprise that he failed to qualify at the Dixie Nationals. Things went better at the next IHRA event, the Springnationals at Bristol, where he lasted until the semifinal before his transmission let go and he lost to Warren Johnson. Bristol also hosted the IHRA Summernationals on August 3 and Sox qualified with an 8.37. Despite running a quicker 8.33 in the first round, he lost to Don Nicholson's 8.22. The following week he was at Maryland International Raceway for the Mountain Motor Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show and Sox advanced past the first two rounds with a couple of 8.13 passes. In the semifinal, he ran another 8.13, but lost to Pat Musi's 7.91. |

Notes: Sox started his season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 7.98/173.07, becoming the fourth member of the Holley Seven-Second Club. He lasted until the semifinals before eventual winner Rickie Smith's 7.96/173 beat his 8.04/173. At Rockingham, for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Sox ran 7.86/174.90 to qualify #3. Again, he lasted until the semifinals, but this time a broken driveshaft yoke stopped him in his race against Don Nicholson. The next IHRA event was the Springnationals at Bristol. Sox ran 7.92/173.07 to qualify #2 just a tick behind Smith's 7.91. Ronnie improved to a 7.91 in the first round, and he set Low ET in round two with a 7.89 that beat Mike Kennedy. But for the third race in a row, he lost in the semis. This time his late 7.99 lost to Warren Johnson's 8.10. Everything clicked at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 7.92; he won his semifinal race over Keith Albritton, and in the final, he scored the victory with a 7.91/175 that dumped Johnson's 7.99/167. Early in July, he was at Connecticut for an eight-car show. He set Low ET in the first round, with an 8.07 but fouled against Don Campanello on the run. He made it into the final at the IHRA Northern Nationals but had to settle for the runner-up spot as Johnson got the best of him there. These two would meet again in the final at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. Sox qualified #2 with a 7.94/173.41 while Smith was low at 7.93/176. Johnson followed these two with an 8.08/171. Ronnie ran 7.97 and 8.01/173 to get into the semifinals. A semifinal 8.06 advanced when Harold Denton fouled. Sox picked it back up to a 7.990/172.41 victory over Johnson's 8.11/168. The team's next stop was at Budds Creek for the Mountain Motor Nationals. The Dean Thompson Mustang was sporting a 612 cubic inch Boss engine for this event. A power failure had knocked out the timing clocks, so there were no ETs recorded. Sox ran well, and he reached the semifinals to run against Smith. Unfortunately, the lights didn't count down on Sox's side of the tree, and a red light came on. Management offered a rerun between the two cars, but Sox declined. Shortly after that, he was at Brainerd for the Quaker State Championships. He reached the final only to foul away an 8.01 while Denton picked up the trophy with an 8.05. It was then back to Bristol for the IHRA US Open Championships. Sox knocked them dead as he qualified #1 with an unheard of 7.79/176.49. He backed it up for a new IHRA record. Sox then dominated the race. An opening round 7.91/172.08 beat William Paris, a round two 7.87/173.47 beat Smith, and in the semifinals, he beat Denton. In another WJ vs. Sox final, his 7.89/174.08 put away Johnson's Monte Carlo at 8.25/161. Confirmed low qualifier in Atlanta Mountain Motor Challenge at 7.88/173.74 on 10/10/81, but tossed rods in a first-round 7.97/155.97 win and was done for the day. Ronnie finished number 1 in IHRA in 1981. |

Notes: Photo from 1981. Number 2 in IHRA 1982. | Sox opened the season by qualifying #1 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with 7.76/178.21 IHRA records. He beat Harold Robinson, a fouling Pat Musi with a 7.88, and a semifinal 7.86 beat Frank Cappadoro. A final round 7.90/176 gave Sox his 13th career IHRA victory over a fouling Harold Denton. In April, he was scheduled to run a best of three match race against Joe Lepone at Budds Creek, but he lost a motor in their first race and had to withdraw. He ran just as well at IHRA's second event of the year, the Pro-Am Nationals at Rockingham. Once again he qualified #1 with a 7.75/177.16 (Low ET and Top Speed), but in round two he lost to Rickie Smith. On June 20 at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, Ronnie qualified #3 with a 7.86. He made it to the final, but his 7.87/175 was runner-up to Smith's 7.76/179. He won the IHRA Northern Nationals in July, stopping Warren Johnson in the final. Sox was the 8th member of the Holley Seven-Second club with his 7.79 at Rockingham 5/82. |
