Notes: Gary was at Fontana for a sixteen-car show on April 17. He beat Dave Babler's 8.15/192 in the first round, with a 7.91/199.54. He lost to Chuck Griffith in round two. The following day, he was at San Fernando for an eight-car show. Southern qualified #6 with an 8.08 and he improved to 7.93/203.70 in the first round, over an engine blowing Bill Alexander. In the semifinals, he slept on the line and his 7.85/204.08 lost to Gary Casady's 8.18/190 in Bill Martin's "400 Jr."

Notes: The Akins and Hardcastle Stinger II, driven by Gary Southern, was a Chrysler-powered, direct drive, tube-framed Kellison Astra kit car. Neither fish nor fowl, it ran in the funny car classes, the sports car classes, and the fuel altered classes. This car was one of the reasons that NHRA when they instituted the Funny Car classes, specified "Production Bodies only." Hardcastle held the CC/FD record. | Per Steve Reyes: “Roger Hardcastle and Pat Akins joined forces to race the "Stinger II" in the funny car class in 1967 [maybe 1966?]. With the very talented Gary Southern driving the team was winning some big funny car events in SoCal until the losing teams started to cry about the body style of the "Stinger II". NHRA stepped in and made the car run in the AA/FA class. Rumor has it that the owners were so pissed off if being reclassed that the car was stripped and taken to a swampy area in SoCal and sunk, never to be seen again.” As can be seen in the attached photo, car was classed as an AA/FA at that time. Notes: Gary Southern recorded a 6.03/210.28 mph qualifying time at Ontario 1972, but the run was disallowed by NHRA officials due to timing system issues. When offered an opportunity to back up the run within two percent (6.15) or have the disputed run disallowed, Southern chose not to try to duplicate the feat. DNQ run was a 6.870. Interestingly, Southern ran exactly 6.870/206.89 in a first-round loss at the Winternationals. He was first alternate there at 6.920/208.81, but got into the show when another racer could not make the call.
