Notes: Photo from the 1998 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified 10th at 6.78/204.26. Lost to Tony Gillig in round one. 6.77/204 to 6.84/203 (photo). While the Ford campaigners ran Probes, Mustangs, and T-Birds, all the strong Chevy campaigners ran the Monte Carlo. Steve was one of them. His season didn't start the best when he failed to qualify at Bradenton for the IHRA Winternationals. He was the tenth alternate with a 6.93/173.77 best. From that, he rebounded nicely by qualifying #10 at Darlington for the IHRA Southern Nationals with a 6.77/203.49. He was late off the line in the opening round of eliminations, and his 6.78/202.52 lost to Tim Nabors' 6.82/203. He was unable to get a good run-in at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals, and as a result, his 7.57/140.01 (eighth alternate) failed to qualify. He also failed to qualify at the IHRA Empire Nationals, where he could only run a 7.35/188.89 best. Things returned to normal at the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he qualified as mentioned above. Near the end of August, Steve was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. A 6.77/203.52 qualified #7, and in round one, his 6.80/203.25 beat Larry O'Brien's quicker, but later 6.81/204. In round two, tire shake held him back to 6.87/202.15 and a loss to Chris Holbrook's 6.78/207. In mid-September, Epping hosted the IHRA North American Nationals, and Spiess qualified #13 with a 6.75/206.76. An even better 6.71/206.70 defeated Pete Berner's 6.77/203 in the opening round. In the second round, his 6.78/205.85 lost to Daniel Seamon's 6.72/206. Six Monte Carlo's qualified for the IHRA President's Cup Championships. Steve's 6.73/205.26 got him the #11 spot in the field. But he didn't get to hang around long as in round one, his 6.78/204.35 fell to Ron Miller's 6.76/205. Steve really showed 'em at the IHRA World Finals. He qualified #2 with a 6.73/205.82 behind Angelo Alesci's 6.71/205. In the first round, he set low Et with an outstanding 6.64/207.88 to beat Nabors, who shut down with problems. To show that it was no fluke, he came back out in round two and ran 6.68/207.30 to beat O'Brien's 6.80/206. Another 6.64 at 207.43 in the semifinal defeated Seamon's 6.76/205. He faced Tony Gillig in the final, and Tony had run a great 6.66 in winning his semifinal race. What was hoped to be a great final turned out to be one-sided as Steve had difficulties and shut down to 7.54/139.57 while Gillig picked up the victory with a 6.68/206.

Notes: Steve was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.72/206.01. In round one, he beat Chris Holbrook, and a 6.69/207.11 in round two defeated Tom Lee's 6.72/207. Gene Wilson got out of shape against him in the semifinals, and Steve only needed a 6.95/206.51 to advance. He faced low qualifier, John Montecalvo, in the final. In the final, Montecalvo fouled away a 6.65/207 while Steve picked up the victory with a 6.70/207.24. He also qualified #6 at the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.73/206.32. A even better 6.69/208.42 beat Floyd Cheek's close 6.70/207 in the opening round. Another 6.69 at 207.66 beat Montecalvo's 6.67/209 in round two. He ran his third straight 6.69 (at 207.94) in the semifinal, but it wasn't enough as he lost to the eventual winner Jerry Yeoman's 6.66/209. Things did not end there, however, as after clearing the traps, the car turned left and went airborne before coming to a rest on top of the guardrail. Steve was ok; the same could not be said for his Monte Carlo. He showed up at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals driving a Cutlass.
