Notes: Also ran as a Top Fuel and alcohol dragster with a cowling body. Gerry Steiner proclaimed himself the World's Fastest Austrian, and who can argue with that! Gerry Steiner, after coming from Europe, drove Top Fuelers in the sixties and seventies. Steiner switched over to funny cars by the end of the decade. The Sparks and Steiner started as a BB/FC as shown in the photo, but the car was soon swapped the Donovan over to nitro. Steiner ran the car with the body and without the body in Top Fuel on occasion. Gerry Steiner ran a known best of 6.56 with the car at Bakersfield before parking the car. Notes: Funny car chassis with cowling. Photo from 1979 Bakersfield March Meet. Back in 1980, I was helping Gerry Steiner with his Vega Funny Car. Ron Attebury lengthened the chassis from 110'' to 125''. Gerry wanted to go have some fun while the body was being lengthened. He built up an all iron 392 on 80% Nitro, 3 disc clutch, Lenco two speed, and had Mike Terri add the wing from his Kent Fuller Top Fuel FED. I made the cowl and new side panels for the wing. "LET’S GO RACING!” Look out Top Fuel! The first outing was at Fremont. Gerry made a half track check out run. We checked everything over and we were good to go. The next pass was a full blast run, but needed more clutch on a 6.90 pass. The next pass was a 6.82 and he shutoff early. I think we were 19th in qualifying, but it was fun! The next race was at Bakersfield. We made one pass at 6.68/221 mph. Could have put more counterweight on, but we hurt a piston. FUN? Heck yeah; while everyone else was running 5s in Top Fuel. So now the Vega Funny Car is owned by Jason Colby and getting his feet wet in a Funny Car. - Roger Lee
