Notes: One-of-a-kind, futuristic rear-engine exhibition car. The Piranha was based on AMT's anticipated entry into the world of small mass-produced cars for the public. A Corvair-powered kit car was planned, but production got little farther than the Piranha prototype. In essence, the car was too radical to be deemed a funny car and too slow for a top fuel dragster. The car was ill-handling. Astute match racers would rely on their water-cooled entries to burn the car down, resulting in its loss. However, when all went well, no flopper, even the Nicholson Comet, could touch it. Per Chris Martin, Walt Stevens went a confirmed 8.71/187 at Irwindale. Also, 182.64 per Drag News. Was the 8.29 Walt or Connie Swingle (who did run an 8.29 in October 1966)? -- RH | Walt was at Tulsa on July 3 for the NHRA Division 4 race. He ran a series of exhibition runs, with the best pass being an 8.93/180.58.| Contradicting the statement made above, driver Walt Stevens was quoted as reporting that the car handled superbly. “It drove like a Cadillac. Notes: Stevens was at Lions on July 6 for an eight-car show. His 7.75/215.30 qualified #5. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Larry Dixon driving the "Fireside Inn" car. Unfortunately, Walt smoked the tires and shut off, losing to Dixon's 7.12/211. The next day (July 7), Fremont held a four-car show. In the first race, Stevens ran 7.93/165.44 to beat Glen Woosley's 8.03/209. In the final, the "Outcast" faced Bob Downey, who was driving a Junior Fueler. Stevens won easily with his 7.87/212.76, beating Downey's 8.28/146. Walt was driving the "Outcast" on August 3 at the Gold Cup Championships at Irwindale. He beat Ron Hampshire in the first round with a 7.32/185.56. In the second round, he beat James Warren's 7.37 with a 7.32/205.00. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jess Sturgeon in the "Howard's Cams Special" in the semifinal. Walt won 13 weeks in a row at San Fernando. Was that 1967 or 1968?

Notes: Stevens was at Bakersfield for the March Meet. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the first round, he ran 7.68/191.89 to defeat Mark Pieri's 7.85/196. Norm Wilcox fouled against him in round two, so he eased to a 10.13/95.74 to advance. But in the semifinal, he fouled against eventual winner Walt Rhoades in the "Gas House Gang" car. The following week (March 9), he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. His 7.77/193.54 (Top Speed) qualified #3. Another 7.77/181.08 in the opening round beat Jim Bunker, and in the semifinal, a 7.79/192.70 beat Bob Muravez driving the "Freight Train. He faced Mike Snively in the final, and Walt's 7.81/191.88 got the victory over Snively's 7.98. His next stop was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. This was an eight-car show, and he failed to break into the 7.77 "bump."
