Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Ran 6.178 at Columbus, 6.36 at Englishtown, 6.21 at Indy, and 232.55 at PRO NY National 8/74. Best NHRA National Event times were the 6.178 at Columbus and 237.46 at Indy. | Grant Stoms had his new car at Englishtown in April. There were no other Top Fuel cars running, but he tested out his new ride and ran 7.36/222.56. Later in the month, he was at Cecil County's National Open. He failed to reach the finals, but he did set Top Speed. Stoms won the NHRA Division 1 opener held at Englishtown on May 5. He beat Sarge Arciero in the first round, with a 6.26/229.59 (Top Speed), and he soloed in the semifinals when low qualifier Gary Beck had his brakes fail and was unable to stage. He faced Roger Toth driving the "Hemi-Hunter" in the final and Toth lost fire so Grant ran a solo 6.62/220.58 for the win. The following week (May 11), he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.20/204.54. But the car broke on the run and first alternate Ed Moses took his place in the show. Shortly after that, he got another win over an eight-car field at Englishtown. He beat Toth in the final. Early in June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Stoms qualified #6 with a 6.21/231.95. He ran a career-best (to this point) 6.178/233.76 to beat Shirley Muldowney's 6.47/215 in the opening round. But in round two, his 6.24/233.76 fell to eventual winner Beck’s 6.03/236. At the third NHRA Division 1 race held at Maple Grove, Grant set Low ET and Top Speed during qualifying with a 6.22/229.00. Unfortunately, he hurt his engine on a first-round winning run of 6.52 and he was unable to return for his semifinal race against Dale Thierer. Back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 6.46/231.95 qualified #14. He improved to a 6.36/224.43 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat John Wiebe's 6.25/216. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #9 with a 6.37/222.77. That set up a first-round match against low qualifier Beck. Gary had the field covered by over three tenths in qualifying. Grant’s 6.34/226.73 lost to Beck's 6.20/219. He qualified #9 with a 6.23/227.27 at New York National for the ill-fated PRO National Challenge race. He soloed in round one, when Tony Ceraolo lost fire. In round two, he and eventual winner Wiebe had a good race that saw Wiebe's 6.05/210 beat his 6.08/232.55. He didn't run nearly as well as he would have liked at the NHRA US Nationals. He only qualified #20 in the 32-car field with a 6.21/234.37. He beat Carl Olson in the opening round with a 6.26, but a round two 6.30 lost to Ted Wolf's 6.18. The NHRA Division 1 final was held at Atco and Grant set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 at 6.16/238.09. But in the first round, both he and Beck had problems and Gary's 6.98 beat his quicker 6.90. His next stop was at Englishtown for its Fallnationals held on the first week of October. Grant qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.40/239.00 (Top Speed). An opening round 6.31/236.22 beat Larry Petit's 6.43/222, but in the semifinal, the car broke at half-track while racing Charlie Greer. |

Notes: Unique 260" wheelbase car was long for its time. Won Division 1 in 1975 and 1977. Stoms failed to qualify for the NHRA Gatornationals. He did much better at the Cecil County National Open in April. It was an eight-car show and Stoms advanced to the final relatively easy as Dave Twiggs broke and Hank Endres blew a rear end. Still, Grant ran a best of 6.29/229 to reach the final against Ted Wolf in the Jim and Allison Lee car. More problems arose when Ted's transmission broke and Stoms' idled to the win with a 16.94. He was runner-up to Endres at the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown where his 6.84/218.44 lost to Hank's 6.44/225 in the final. At the Dutch Classic at Maple Grove in May, he qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.47 at only 171.75. He ran an easy first-round solo when Larry Bucher blew a clutch. But in round two, his 6.41/223.32 lost to Endres' 6.16/221. His next stop was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.17/234.98 qualified #10. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.24/230.76 lost to the race's eventual winner Marvin Graham's 6.13/227. He was back at Maple Grove on June 21 for the NHRA Division 1 point race. A 6.27 qualified #2, and he improved to 6.14/232.55 in the first round, to beat Charlie Greer. In the semifinals, he made another good run of 6.17/232.55, but lost to a quick-leaving Roger Toth who ran a career best 6.20/230 to win. Stoms had a strong outing at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #6 with a 6.17/235.60. An easy 6.59/177.51 beat a tire smoking Dave Settles in round one, while in round two his 6.36/212.26 beat Greer's quicker 6.30/229. The fun ended in the semifinals where he slowed to a 6.77/233.16 loss to Jim Bucher's 6.35/218. Grant won Raceway Park's 10th annual Fallnationals at Englishtown, N.J. He beat Guy Boucher who lost a blower belt in the final with a 6.43/221.67. Grant’s best NHRA times were run at Indy, where the team his a great 6.024/245.23 in qualifying. Those were his best NHRA times of the year. |

Notes: Grant's best NHRA national event times for 1976 were 6.174 at the Springnationals on 6/12/76 and 231.36 at Sainair on 8/17/76. He ran a first-round 6.17 at Sanair, but we are unsure of the third digit. We formerly listed 238 mph for this year. If you know those occurred in 1976, tell us when and where. Stoms failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Shortly after that, he Englishtown for a twelve-car show. The first round was qualifying, and he blew his engine against Larry Bucher. Stoms qualified #1 at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic with a 6.05/176.12. In the first round, his ailing 6.73/132.74 lost to Joe Kowchefski's 6.40/206. Grant was at Columbus for NHRA Springnationals; he qualified #7 with a 6.174/220.04. In the first round, his 6.52/224 beat Bucher's 6.68/220. His 6.54/215.82 fell to Richard Tharp's 6.16/220 in the "Candies and Hughes" car in round two. Near the end of June, he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division 1 race. A 6.27 qualified #6, losing to Hank Endres in the opening round. Stoms qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.21/223.88. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts on the run and could not run in the opening round of eliminations. The following week (July 18), Grant was at Suffolk for the fourth NHRA Division 2 race. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field but lost to eventual winner Paul Longenecker in the first round. 260" wheelbase. He won over an eight-car field at Connecticut on July 25. He ran 6.28/228.42 and defeated Ted Wolf's 6.38/218 in the "Jim and Alison Lee" car. His 6.43/208.33 took out Bob Beaulieu's 6.62/172 in the "Eastern Raider" car in the semi-final. In the final, he set Low ET with a 6.18/225 to win over John Corcoran, who broke. At the NHRA Grandnationals, he won his first-round race with a 6.17/213.37, but he lost a blower belt in round two, and his 9.15 lost to Tharp's 5.98. The fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He lasted until the semi-final before his 6.37 lost to Endres' 6.34. He qualified #31 at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. He had broken in qualifying and could not run Bob Struksnes in the opening round. His next stop was at Atco for the final NHRA Division 1 race. He made it into the final, where his 6.83/229.59 (Top Speed) finished runner-up to Ed Moses' 6.70/216. Won Division 1 in 1975 and 1977. Notes: 260" wheelbase. Won Division 1 in 1975 and 1977. Not sure on the year of this photo (early, we think). Made a big splash this year with 5.91/242.58 at Englishtown and a 5.92/241 at Indy. Best numbers were the 5.910/242.58 at E-Town. |

Notes: Grant qualified #12 at Gainesville at 6.20. In round one, he beat James Warren, 6.264/218.97 to 6.26/175. In round two, Pat Dakin got the best of him, 6.06/236 to 6.17/237.46. Grant was at Englishtown on May 4 for the NHRA Division 1 opener. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.98/240.00 (Low ET and Top Speed). But he was upset in round one, where Bob Simmons stepped up to a 5.99/227 to beat his hard-charging 6.27/240.00. Stoms failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.17/220 best. In July, the team ran a strong 5.910/242.58 #qualifier at NHRA Englishtown. Grant beat Paul Longenecker in round one, 6.28/210.77 to 6.77/163, but lost to Richard Tharp in round two, 6.03/243 to 6.27/214.79. Grant qualified #3 at Sanair at 6.15/233.76. He beat Bob Struksnes in round one, 6.04/219.51 to 6.36/203. Shirley Muldowney ended Grant's day in round two, 6.00/234 to 6.30/171.10. The team qualified #3 at Indy with a nice 5.922/241.28. Grant beat Johnny Abbott in round one, 6.086/223.88 to 6.31/226. Clive Skilton defeated his troubled 7.91/108 in round two with a 6.13/221. That was the team's last NHRA national event this year. |

Notes: Photo from 1984 US Nationals, where the team was the first alternate at 5.86/236.22. The team got in the show but lost to Frank Bradley in round one, 5.86/238 to 5.95/233. This was the team's debut and its only NHRA national event this year. | "Former Jim & Alison Lee car. This was our debut. I entered Indy before we had a truck or trailer or the car in possession! Got into the show but we lost to Bradley." - Tom Stephens, Draglist LIVE, 8/16/21 |

Notes: Tom Stephens and Grant Stoms had a solid NHRA national event season in 1985. Qualified #13 at 5.983/206.51 at Gainesville and upset Larry Minor in round one, with a 12-second shutoff when Minor broke. Joe Amato beat Grant in round two, 5.42/242 to an improved 5.91/238. Qualified #15 at Columbus at 6.194/209.59 and lost to Gene Snow's 5.77/205 with a 6.14/230 in round one. They got a little quicker at Englishtown, qualifying #14 at 5.833/245.76, and lost to Darrell Gwynn in round one, 5.53/257 to 5.806/245.23. The team was the fourth alternate at Indy at 5.953/232.55 and then really stepped up at Maple Grove. They ran a great 5.591/253.37, but unfortunately, that was the first alternate slot. Tom discussed that run on Draglist LIVE on 8/16/21: "The 5.59 at the first Keystone Nats in September 85. we made some drastic changes. Fresh blower, more overdrive, new Dart heads, and a Littlefield blower. That was the last NHRA eight-car field. Due to smaller teams like me and John Carey competing, NHRA decided to go back to 16-car fields for good." |

Notes: Photo from 1987. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. The team came out at NHRA Columbus for their first national event of 1986. They were the sixth alternate at 6.243/220.15, joining Muldowney, Kerhulas, Bradley, and Ostrander outside the field. The team then ran a personal best at Englishtown with a #12 qualifying 5.567/253.52. Unfortunately, Gary Ormsby stopped Grant in round one, 5.54/254, to a redlighting 7.99/102. The team's Indy jinx continued with a 7.11/125.59 DNQ. They got closer at Maple Grove, but a 5.754/219.31 finished as the first alternate. |

Notes: Tom and Grant came out for their last NHRA national event season in 1987 with appearances at Englishtown and Maple Grove. They were the third alternate at E-Town at 5.643/244.49 and did not get to race. They were the second alternate at Maple Grove at 5.993/190.47 but did make it into the show. There, they lost to Darrell Gwynn, 5.30/259 to 5.804/233.03. After this season, Tom went to work on Wall Street. He came back years later to provide some financial support to many racers, including Jack Wyatt, the Lagana Bros., and others. | "This was the last race for the car. we needed a new car. it was 255 inches and not long enough. 2 speeds were going to high gear only. The beginning of the modern 300 inch, high gear only car we know today. I lost money in October 1987 (Black Monday). I moved to wall street until the early '90s. I came back to Maryland and then Virginia. Then business got good again, and we started to 'sponsor' friends' cars with parts and pieces." - Tom Stephens, Draglist LIVE, 8/16/21 |

Notes: had shop on Haskell Blvd in Dallas | “This Vega…was Carl's first entry into the funny car class and was about as aerodynamic as a brick. Short wheelbase made for some interesting runs. Your stats are correct as far as the Chevy engine with Donovan heads. Car left the line in second gear necessitating only one shift. Rather than modify the body, Beadle and Burkhart talked Carl into moving to a Monza body. Date [of photo] around 1975.” - Wuote from Ron Stone. JM |
