Notes: In August Chevrolet released a very limited number of Z-11 engine components (special heads and a two-part aluminum intake manifold) that was part of the full-on 427 W-motor package in '63. When outfitted with these parts Strickler's Bill Jenkins-tuned Belair moved from SS/S class to FX, both classes new for '62. (Factory experimental was intended for cars with optional factory equipment not generally available to the public.) According to Larry Davis' book, Strickler set the B/FX record with this car in Z-11 trim (112.80), but reverted back to SS/S trim for the Nationals, and put the FX parts on a '62 Impala which ran B/FX at that meet. - RT

Notes: After splitting with fellow 'Dodge Boy' Bill Jenkins for 1965, Dave Strickler got one of the acid-dipped AeroChem cars built by Amblewagon. However, the car was so weak that Stricker had an off-the-record chat with NHRA's Bill Dismuke and almost canceled his program that year. he ran his AA/MP 1964 Dodge at the Winter meets as a result. Helped by noted York-based tuner Bill Stiles, the car was strengthened and began touring that spring. Strick ran the car for the season and eventually injected it, but it may not have ever had a substantial fuel load beyond methanol. Strickler returned to Chevrolet when the factory sponsorships were ended for 1966. Car was sold to Chuck McJury. It became 'McJury's Fury' with a 1966 Charger nose and ran through 1967. Found in New York in poor condition by Steve Atwell and Dick Towers. Restored, now in the collection of Nick Smith. Long Beach CA 1965 (11/18/65 Drag News)

Notes: Dave was at York U.S.30 on September 24, where three cars ran. Bruce Larson and Bud Faubel were also there. Strickler made a 9.74/153.58 warm-up pass. In his first race, his 9.41/154.90 beat Faubel's Dodge. Larson broke, so Bud and Dave raced a second time, with the Dodge taking the win. Strickler dumped a 70% load of nitro in the tank for the first time and came back out and ran a solo pass of 9.09/155.17. On October 9, he was at Atco Dragway for a best-of-three-match race against Tom Smith. Dave's Corvette dipped into the eights for the first time and won all three races with an 8.93/159 best.

Notes: Strickler was in Miami on January 22 for an eight-car show. Vernon Jones' Mustang failed to fire in the opening round, so Dave made an easy pass to advance. In the semifinal, his 9.63/139.10 lost to eventual winner Phil Bonner's 9.16/157. He came back out later and ran 9.15/161.57 in a consolation race. Dave ran a match race against Al Joniec's gas-burning Mustang on March 19 at Cecil County. Al got a half-second handicap but still lost two straight to the Corvette's 9.21/156.78 and 9.10/156.52 times. He was at Cecil County on April 9 to face "Dyno" Don Nicholson for a best of three. Don was on a rampage at this time, so Strickler was definitely the underdog. In the first race, Nicholson reset his track record to 8.27 at 166.97 while Dave fouled at 9.67/131." Dyno" lowered the track record even further with an 8.17/172.08 in the second race that beat Dave's 8.83/161.00. It was decided that Strickler would get a half-second handicap to even things up in the last race. It paid off as Dave ran a career-best (to this point) 8.73/162.74 to beat the Comet's 8.24/166. On April 29, the Chevys of Bruce Larson and Strickler squared off in a best of three match at New York. Bruce won the first race with an 8.76/155 over Dave's 8.91/152.32, but in the second race, the Corvette's 8.89/157.84 beat the Chevelle's 8.94/148 to tie the match. In the last race, Dave ran well, hitting 8.78/159.85, but it wasn't enough as Larson got the victory with an 8.66/160. Cecil County held its Factory Showdown race on May 10, and Strickler ran well there. In the first round, he got out on Tommy Grove, and his 8.63/163.33 held on to win over Grove's much better 8.47/167. There were two major crashes at the race, one involving Nicholson and the other with Arnie Beswick. Due to the late hour, the event was called, and Roger Lindamood and Strickler split the first-place money. Dave was at New York National on May 14 for a best of three match against Larry Arnold's "Penetration" Charger. Strickler had no problem with the Dodge, winning three straight with times of 8.77, 8.70, and 8.74. His best speed was 163.04. Aquasco held a ten car show on May 21, but Dave lost a motor in the first round, advancing "Jungle" Jim Liberman. He was back at York on May 27 for a match with "Miss STP," Paula Murphy. He warmed up with an 8.82/159.85. In the first race, he fouled, and his 8.99/148 lost to Paula, who blew a rear end and coasted to the finish line. Del Heinelt filled in for her in the second race, and Dave beat him with an 8.85/156.52, but he lost a transmission on the run and was done for the day.

Car was not as successful as the ‘69 Camaro. | Dick debuted this car on July 19 at the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #14 with a 10.18/135.33 (one spot behind Bill Jenkins' 10.16). In the first round, Ed Miller fouled against him and his 10.13/136.77 advanced. But in round two, his transmission broke and Dick Humbert soloed in Billy Stepp's Challenger.

Notes: Dave got himself into some hot water with NHRA when he was one of five cars randomly chosen for a pre-race teardown inspection. He told the officials that he had only one gasket set and talked them into postponing the teardown until after eliminations. After he lost in the first round, he told officials that it was senseless to tear the car down now. NHRA responded by telling Dave it was senseless to bring his car to another meet since he was now suspended for a year. #2 qualifier at Indy 1972. Photo from 1972 US Nationals. Ran 9.71 at Suffolk.

Notes: Strickler was at Lakeland on March 3 for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #11 and lost in the opening round, where his 9.67/140 lost to Ronnie Sox's 9.31/145. In April, he was at Suffolk for an eight-car show. A 9.47 qualified #3, and in round one, his 9.43 beat Carlos Sandoval who had missed a shift. Frank Iaconio smoked the tires in the semifinal against him, and Stricker ran 9.87 to advance. He was to face Rich Mirarcki in the final. The final was never run as it was rained out. Shortly after that (April 15), he was at Cecil County for its National Open. It was another eight-car field, and he qualified #3 with a 9.33. He soloed with a 9.47/142.88 in the opening round when Dutch Irrgang's Vega broke. In the semifinal, his 9.37 lost to Paul Blevins' 9.19. On May 6, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He had the quickest Chevy qualifier with his career-best (to this point) 9.37 getting the #13 spot in the show. In the first round, his late 9.37/145.39 lost to Stuart McDade's 9.41/145. Dave was at Muncie on May 20 for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.56 and lasted until the semifinals before his 9.35/145.39 lost to eventual winner Don Carlton's 9.04/152. He was at Maple Grove in June for the USRT event. In the first round, his 9.39/144 beat Wally Booth's 9.51/142. A even better 9.30/144.69 lost to a quick-leaving Ken Dondero at 9.31/144, who was driving one of "Dyno Don" Nicholson's Pintos. He was the strongest Chevy qualifier at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 9.43 got him the #6 spot in the sixteen-car field. Strickler lasted until round two before eventual winner Carlton beat him. The next USRT event was in Minnesota in July. Dave beat Mirarcki in the first round, and in round two, his 9.30 beat Wally Booth's 9.52. In the semifinal, a 9.30 defeated Wayne Gapp's 9.54. He went up against "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the final. The two had a great race saw saw "Dyno's" 9.26/145.16 beat Strickler's 9.27/145.16. The next USRT event was held at Cayuga, Ontario. Ford's had won the first two USRT races, but this one belonged to Strickler. Dave's 9.31/145.16 beat Booth in the opening round. In round two, his 9.36 took out Ed Schartman. He got a big win over Ronnie Sox in the semifinal, where his 9.22/147.50 beat Sox's quicker 9.17/148. He faced the always tough Herb McCandless's formidable Dodge in the final. Dave cut another excellent light with his 9.22/145.39 winning over Herb's 9.19/149. Surprisingly, he did not race at the NHRA Summernationals, but he did race at the Super Stock Nationals near the end of the month (July 28). He qualified #8 for the sixteen-car field with a 9.35/144.54. Dave improved to 9.31/144 in the first round, to beat Carl Ruth's 9.69/141. In round two, Melvin Yow fouled away a 9.22/148 against him, advancing Stricker's 9.36/143 into the semifinal. There, Dave fouled away a 9.38/143.54 against the eventual winner Paul Blevins. The following day, he was in Connecticut for an eight-car show. The race was run with all the cars making two runs, and the two drivers with the most wins would meet in the final. Dave's 9.33/145.39 beat Ray Allen's quicker 9.30/146 in his first race. In his second race, he beat Gapp's 9.42/146 with a 9.38/143.54. This put him into the final against "Dyno Don." Nicholson was running 9.1's with ease, and in the final, he set Low ET with a 9.09/147 that topped Strickler's 9.34/143.54. As the season progressed, Dave's little Vega became more and more of a threat as it was running strong. On August 8, he was at Englishtown for the USRT event. It was a sixteen-car field with all the "big Name" drivers. In the opening round of eliminations, Dave's 9.26/145.63 beat Dave Kanners' 9.44/143. In round two, he ran 9.20/145.39 to beat Mike Fons' 9.27/148. He ran McCandless in the semifinals, and his 9.27/144.92 lost to the Dodge's 9.12/148. He then won over an eight-car field at Maple Grove. A 9.48/144 in the opening round had beaten Clyde Cheek's 9.55/142. In the semifinal, he quickened his pace to 9.29/144.92 in defeating John Healy's 9.50/142. He faced Ruth in the final, who was also driving an SRD-built Vega in the final. The cars may have looked alike, but they didn't run the same as Dave set Low ET with a 9.22/144.92 while winning over Carl's 9.69/141. Dave ran 145.16 at PRA Tulsa OK 9/73.
