Notes: Pontiac had a strong performance image in the sixties. I’m sure a lot of Pontiac lovers missed having a car to root for in the Pro Stock wars of the early seventies. Sure, there were Pontiac Pro Stockers before this one. But none made the impact that this one did. Early in '73, Bert actually had to send NHRA brochures for the Pontiac Astre to prove to them such a car existed. The car was marketed in Canada. Once NHRA gave Straus the OK, construction started. The car was completed in time for the NHRA Summernationals, but new car bugs kept the car from making the show. At the NHRA Grandnationals, Bert qualified the car #9 in the sixteen-car field. He lost to low qualifier and eventual winner Butch Leal in the first round. His 9.37/143.54 lost to the "California Flash's" 9.17/150. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, a 9.269/146.10 qualified #16 for the 32-car show. An opening round 9.33 beat previous year's winner Ray Allen at 9.42. In round two he improved to 9.230/146.57 to send Arlen Vanke's 9.38 packing. But in round three, Bert’s 9.27/146.10 lost to Paul Blevins' 9.20/150.

Notes: Bob was at Warner-Robins on March 28 for the NHRA Division 2 opener. In the first round, his shut-off 7.88 lost to Paul Longenecker's 6.57. Only five cars showed at DeSoto for the second NHRA Division 2 race, and Straus' 14.27 qualified last. Once again, he shut down early in the first round, and this time he lost to Jim Bucher's 6.43.

Notes: The Chevy-powered Top Fuel cars were running fairly well during '76 -'77. They still had a tough time qualifying for the national events, but at local eight-car shows, they remained competitive. Strauss was on a budget, but his car ran well. He was at DeSoto for the NHRA Division 2 race, where he lasted until the final before going up in smoke and shutting off to an 8.77/98.25 runner-up spot to Lee Weller's 6.21/221 in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car. He also scored a runner-up finish at the second NHRA Division 2 race held at Blaney Drag Strip on June 4. There, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.46/220.58. An opening round 6.58/209.30 beat Don Durbin's 6.61/217. He got to make an easy solo in the semifinal because only six cars showed. In the final, it turned out to be an all-Chevy match, as his opponent was Don Powell. Don got the win with a 6.52/216 that covered Bob's 6.74/165.44. The following week, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Strauss qualified #15, but his car broke in the first round against Weller. He was also at Atco for the IHRA Fallnationals in September. Bob qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field, but he lost to Paul Longenecker in the opening round. Paul ran 6.420/217.39 in a non-qualifying effort (#15 alternate) at Indy in his only NHRA national event appearance.

Notes: Bob was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals and qualified easily when only 16 cars showed for the sixteen-car field. His 6.288/214.79 got him the #15 spot in the show. In the first round, he faced Connie Kalitta, but Straus had problems and shut off to 8.15/96.87 in a loss to Kalitta's 5.64/238.72. That was Bob's only NHRA national event this year. We need to find out where the 6.00/225 numbers were run.
