Notes: Stutz started his season at Ontario Motor Speedway for the New Year's Day race. He had one of four of the Chevy-powered cars that qualified for the sixteen-car field. A 6.64 got him the #12 spot in the show. But in the opening round, he had problems and shut down to a 9.34 loss against Denver Schutz, who advanced with a 6.25. His next stop was at Irwindale for the Grand Premiere race. Once again, the Chevy's did well with six qualifying for the field. Ray's 6.46 was the slowest of them in the #14 spot. In round one, he improved to a really great 6.07, but he had slept on the line and lost to Gary Cornwall's 6.21. Rodeck block 002. Only ran one NHRA national event, the World Finals. Qualified #7 at 5.999/240.64. Dropped a close first-round decision to another Chevy car, Stan Shiroma, 6.35/230.76 to 6.43/235.60.

Notes: The new Al Swindahl car really worked well. Stutz ran 5.832/217.39 at Pomona to qualify #7 for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Johnny Abbott in the first round, 6.82/237 to 7.21/213. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 5.85/234.37. He improved to 5.75/235.60 to beat Dwight Salisbury in round one, but his 5.93/232.55 lost to eventual winner Danny Danell's 5.85/238 in round two. Stutz showed up at OCIR on June 25, with Larry Minor helping him out for the Nitro Championships. With Minor's set-up, he set Low ET in qualifying with a 5.78/235.60. He smoked the tires against Danell in the first round with all his newfound horsepower and lost. Ray qualified #14 at Indy at 5.824/238.09, but in round one, he fell off to a ten-second shut-off against Gene Snow. Ray's 5.773/237.46 at the OCIR World Finals was the quickest bump spot on record to that time, but he had more in store for race day. His amazing 5.609/238.72 shocked Bill Carter's 5.77/230 in round one. In round two, Joe Amato ended Ray's day 5.68/239 to 9.97/96. Did Ray run 245.90 somewhere this year? It was not on the NHRA national event trail. | In the ND '83 Finals post-race notes (return of the LA Hooker, etc.), 5.60 CC Kirk Peters ('79 Div. 7 Champ with Kerhulas) mentioned that Larry Minor passed along some information, and back in the pits at the '83 and '84 Finals the Stutz car sounded/idled like the Minor cars. Not as monster-sounding as the Minor cars, but you could hear the similarity in the idle. Notes: Ray attempted to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, but a best of 5.88/238.09 was good for the fifth alternate. He also failed to qualify at the Bakersfield March (May) meet with a 5.80/233.16 best, the first alternate. A 5.71/238.91 qualified #11 at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals, but even though he improved to a 5.64/242.58 in the first round, he lost to Joe Amato's holeshot 5.66/255. At the Springnationals, Ray qualified #12 with a 5.70/226.24, and in the first round, a 5.78/203.90 beat Hank Endres' 5.78/203. A second round 5.73/233.22 beat Jody Smart's 5.79/246. Stutz smoked the tires in the semifinals to a 9.14 loss to Amato's 5.60/253. The team continued to improve, and it showed at the Summernationals, where Ray qualified #13 with a 5.569/242.58. Ray Qualified on the bump at Indy 1986 with 5.630. He qualified #11 at the world finals at 5.592/254.38 but lost to Darrell Gwynn in round one.

Notes: Stutz's season didn't start so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He had already qualified #12 with a 5.52/258.84. He came back out to try to improve his time. On the run, his parachute release broke, and he was carrying too much speed when he attempted to turn at the turn-off road. The car flipped into the concrete barrier. He was ok, but the car was too damaged to race. The Gunite Express team practically assembled a new car in the pits at Gainesville. The new chassis was an Former Jimmy King car, and it was put together over Thursday and Friday. Donnie Couch tuned the car to a 5.47/253.95 to qualify #9 for the NHRA Gatornationals field. In the opening round of competition, Ray shut off to an 8.54/98.33 that lost to Darrell Gwynn's tire-smoking 5.91/190. He also attempted to qualify for the eight-car field at the NHRA Winston All-Star race. Unfortunately, his 5.48/220.40 best was the first alternate. Atlanta was the team's next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was not a good outing, and a 6.35/164.10 best failed to qualify. The team rebounded at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.71/254.66 qualified #12, and it sure must have made Stutz and Couch happy. But in round one, an off-pace 7.05/129.85 lost to Don Garlits' 5.55/261. Ray was at the Texas Motorplex on June 6 for a four-car race. In his first race, his 5.85/242.39 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.81/204, and in his second race, he ran 5.56/260.64 to beat Gary Ormsby's 5.75/258. The team did not go to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals or Canada's NHRA Grandnationals. They were also a no-show at the NHRA Summernationals but returned to the NHRA tour at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but his 6.35/221.45 was good for the fourth alternate. Ray was back at the Motorplex on October 4 for the NHRA Chief Nationals, where he was the second alternate with a 5.73/243.83 best.
