Notes: In August 1967, at US 30 Dragstrip in Gary, Indiana, Chuck Suba drove the X-1 to a 5.41-second elapsed time (although Pete Farnsworth felt the best elapsed time record on reliable clocks was 5.9 seconds at Oklahoma City). The 5.41-second elapsed time remained drag racing's all-time Low ET until November 11, 1971.

Notes: Suba, 30, died in a crash in a one-time ride at Rockford Dragway, Byron, Ill., on Oct. 13, 1968. This Carnett & Rowe fueler was normally driven by Dick Carnett. Reports say the car was drifting left throughout the run; Suba struck a barrel in the lights and flipped, demolishing the car. His father subsequently sued Rockford Dragway for having insufficient guardrails, among other claims. Suba had become the quickest man on earth the previous year (1967), turning a 5.41 in the Reaction Dynamics X-1 Blue Flame rocket car. His quarter-mile record stood for four years. -- RT

Notes: Marty was able to claim that he once beat Dick Landy. It happened at the OCIR All-Pro opener held on January 2 at OCIR. In the opening round of eliminations, he faced Landy, and even he probably thought he was packing up for home after this round. But in their race, Dick missed a shift and slowed to 11.51, and Marty's 10.88/127.15 advanced to the semifinal. There, his 13.92/87.37 lost to the eventual winner Butch Leal's 10.13/137.

Notes: Sugden primarily raced at Salt Lake Airport No. 2. He built the frame and chassis, but was helped with the engine by a group of co-owners: Duane and Don Wignall, Ernie Burgess, and Bob Hopkins. Burgess was replaced by Barnes by the summer. They raced successfully to start the season at the Silver Dollar Drags at Las Vegas on March 16. They took top fuel eliminator with 134.17 mph. He beat John Bradley in the Gene's Brake Shop Special to win. That was quite an accomplishment for the new dragster. They were beaten off the line in a losing run against Northern California's Del Thorkelson in the top eliminator finals. They used a 283 cubic inch '57 Chevy engine in the dragster. On May 11 at Salt Lake, they set a new strip record and won top eliminator with 143.08 mph, running fuel. On May 25 at Salt Lake, they switched to gas and took the top gas time with 125.47 mph.
