Notes: Crowd favorite at OCIR & Irwindale. Marc spent $14,000 in 1969 dollars to have this car built. It was finished in October, and Susman made some break-in passes at OCIR during his licensing runs. The best was a 1,000-foot shut-off 8.30/130. The Fletcher 120" wheelbase chassis held a 392 Hemi built by Bill Hermes that was bored out to 400 cubic inches. It used a Reath crank, M/T rods and pistons, and a Crower cam. On November 7 at OCIR, he attempted to qualify for the Manufacturer's Meet. The car was still too new and needed to get the bugs worked out. He failed to qualify. Mark won the PDA Race of Champions at Sacramento at 7.78/189.46 on November 16. On December 6 at OCIR, he failed to qualify with a 7.55/193.13. The following week, on December 14, he qualified #1 with 7.43/196.50 times but lost to Dick Bourgeois in Don Cook's Corvette in round one, 7.67/182 to Mark's 7.80/187.50.

Notes: Susman was at LaPlace in April for its Spring Drag Festival. Four FCs were scheduled to run, but Arnie Behling failed to show, so only three ran. Marc faced Don Prudhomme in his first race, and the Nova broke. He was having nothing but problems as in the second race, the car broke again against Leonard Hughes. In mid-May, Marc was at Marion, South Dakota, for a best-of-three-match race against Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Susman lost all three races to Minick. He tested the Hemi powerplant for Liberman.

Notes: Sutherland's dragster was powered by a '57 Chrysler engine. He was the owner of the Forean Kustom Speed Shop. Newspapers reported that he was ranked as one of the top fifteen drivers in the country. At Westhampton AFB on Apr. 12, Sutherland snagged the top time of the race before the rains washed out the eliminator competition. He turned 11.19 at 145.16 mph. On May 10 at Westhampton, he took top eliminator with 147.54 mph. On May 24 at Westhampton, he turned the fastest speed of the season with 148.76 mph. At the Memorial Day Championships on May 31 at Westhampton, he set a new strip ET record with 10.07 seconds. On July 5 at the Eastern Interstate Championship at Westhampton, he tied the strip top speed record of 150 mph. On Aug. 23 at Westhampton, he took top eliminator with 140.54 mph. Notes: Paul was at Pomona on January 23 for the Pro Fuel Circuit's Winternationals warm-up race. While he didn't reach the final, his 7.95 qualified #12 which was pretty good considering that there were 34 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car show. He also failed to reach the finals at Irwindale for the AHRA Winternationals. The following week (February 20), he returned to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.67 qualified #6 in the 32-car field. He beat Tom Hoover in the opening round before losing to eventual winner Mike Snively, driving the "Hawaiian" in round two. Paul set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the 32-car field at Lions for the UDRA Winternationals with a 7.38 at 206.42. He failed to reach the finals but he ran well. He fouled at 8.05 in the first round, at the Bakersfield March Meet on Saturday. He didn't do much better on Sunday as he shut down to 12.25/64.14 in the first round, that lost to Bob Hightower's 8.08/192. He was at Riverside for the "Jackpot" circuit race in April. It was an eight-car field and his 7.72/207.36 qualified second to John Mulligan's 7.67/202. These two would work their way into the final. Sutherland's 8.14/206.88 in the first round, defeated a very late 7.81/187 by the Cope Brothers. He improved to 7.72/203.60 in the semifinal to beat Ron Rivero's 8.01/200. In the final, it was Paul who slept on the line and his 7.83/188.28 finished runner-up to Mulligan's 7.95/205. AHRA World Champ 1966. Also ran 7.65 at Bakersfield 3/66 and 206.42 at Lions 2/11/66, and 7.96 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals.

Notes: Ron qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 5.582/261.70, but he lost to Chuck Etchells in the opening round of eliminations, 5.65/266 to 7.69/112. Ron qualified #15 at Phoenix with a 5.560/258.99. Jim White got him in round one, 5.25/278 to 5.529/258.84. Ron really stepped up at the Houston Fram Supernationals with a #7 qualifying 5.341/265.87. In round one, he beat Tom Hoover, 6.44/230 to 7.72/107, but broke against Mark Oswald in round two. Ron's next NHRA national event was Seattle, and he was the second alternate at 7.18/195. Ron again qualified nicely at the Winston World Finals in Pomona, ending up #13 with a 5.447/263.31. But Jim White got him again with a 5.30/289 to 6.56/148 win in round one. It was a nice year for the independent campaigner.
