Notes: Injected fuel. Car was sold later in 1966 to Jim and Bonnie Anderson. Car was eventually destroyed. Likely the same car Richter, Bolger ran in 1965, with modifications. (9/23/66 Drag News) - DD |

Notes: Confirm aspiration and fuel. | Gary Bolger and Bud Richter were one of the first to use the new Camaro for a Funny Car. The car used a 120" chassis built by Jay Howell. The Camaro body came from Fiberglass Ltd. Just ahead of the windshield was a removable panel that gained access to the engine. Dave Puhl's House of Customs applied the bright orange paint that faded off to black scallops at the edges. The lettering was done by Ken Kruse. The unblown engine was a fairly stock 427. It used stock rods and pistons. A Hilborn injection unit delivered the 95% mix of nitro and alcohol. For a transmission, Richter chose a '67 Turbo-Hydro. The power went back to a Pontiac rear with 3.84 gears. Overall weight was 1,900 lbs. and on its first runs, Bolger ran 10.50/140. |

Notes: This car started as Tommy Smallwood's 'Kingfish' in 1968, was run later in '68-early '69 by Don Schumacher. Schumacher ran this car as a second team car for much of 1969, driven by Ron O'Donnell. Later in 69 bought here by Bud Richter. Eventually, '68 Cuda body gave way to a '70 Cuda body. The car was then sold to Frank McDonald, who ran it in the early-mid 70s. Bolger won over an eight-car show at US 131 on August 30. A first-round 7.41/198.66 beat Larry Christopherson's Nova. In the semifinals, Roger Lindamood lost a transmission, and Gary eased it through to an 8.25/148.27. In the final, he beat Bryan Teal in Nelson Carter's car with a 7.81/195.64. At the time it was claimed that Jerry Cunningham was the car owner. |

Notes: Use of Don Garlits' name to obtain bookings. Garlits reportedly got 10 percent of the car's earnings for the use of his name. | Bolger was at York US 30 in May for the Super Stock Nationals. He qualified with a 7.02, and in the first round, his 7.25/201.79 beat Bob Cain. A sleepy 7.12/206.89 in round two lost to Don Schumacher's 7.23/215. Shortly after this, he won over an eight-car field at Lebanon Valley. A track record 6.92 at 208 in the final beat Mart Higginbotham. He was at Cecil County for the Maryland State Funny Car Championships, but a 7.26/180.00 in the opening round lost to Bruce Larson's 7.28/200. In June, he was at National Trail for a four-car round-robin race. Bolger ran 7.39/201.34 in the first round, to beat Tony Wahlay's 7.44/199. In round two, Gary's 7.35/204.54 fell to Bobby Rowe's 7.21/205 in the "Super Duster." In the final round, Gary made history as he was the first to run a "six" at National Trail. His 6.85/211.26 easily beat Wahlay's 7.77/188. This was one of the last races for the Charger as the new Mustang was just about finished. ET from Match Race, Columbus OH 6/71. |

Notes: The "Gold Digger" used a 120" Logghe chassis. The 426 Hemi used a Reath crank and now displaced 480 cubic inches.MT rods held ForgedTrue pistons, and the cam of choice was Howards. A Gary Dyer prepared GMC 6/71 sat on top of a Cragar intake manifold, and Cragar also supplied the blower drive. The fuel was fed by Enderle injection. A Lenco two-speed was used, and the whole car weighed in at 1,850 lbs. The Mustang body came from Fiberglass Ltd. Gary qualified #9 at NHRA Gainesville at 6.80/214.79. He lost to Pat Foster in round one, 6.64/204 to 6.75/215.31. He qualified #5 at the Springnationals. His times were not listed, but #4 was a 6.80, and #9 was a 6.92, so he was between those two. Gary beat Steve Tansy in round one with a shutting off 11.11 after Tansy broke. Pat Foster got him again in round two, 6.73/215 to 6.87/212.26. The team debuted a new Dodge Charger at IHRA Dragway 42 and then ran NHRA Indy. According to the team, the Mustang's best numbers were 6.64/224. They also ran 6.64 at Tri-City and 6.65 at a match race at National Trail on April 12. We need to validate the 224; the best validated speed is the 215.31 from Gainesville. (See the other entry for the Charger). |

Notes: This car replaced the team's Mustang, which they had run for about a year and a half. It made its debut in mid-August at Dragway 42 during the IHRA Summernationals. At the NHRA Nationals, Gary qualified on the bump at 6.648/218.44 and was in the other lane during the first round when Phil Castronovo blew the body off the Custom Body Challenger. The times were 6.80/187 to 6.971/216.34. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Arnie Behling #313 drove the car early to mid '74. Gary Bolger #339 drove the car for the rest of the year. In August, the "Chapman Charger" made its major event debut with Gary Bolger behind the wheel at the NHRA Grandnationals. Gary qualified in the top half of the field (#6) with a 6.345/225.56. Unfortunately, an opening-round 6.88/207.87 lost to Clayton Harris' 6.74/170. Photo from US 30 Dragstrip on 6/02/74. |

Notes: Gary Bolger and Dale Creasy were one of the teams picked to run the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars funny car circuit. In mid-April, Gary pulled in to Atco for a best of three match race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Jim failed to show, so Gary was going to run a solo pass for the fans. Things didn't go as planned as coming off the line, he smoked only one tire, crossed into the opposite lane, and smacked into the guardrail. The car flipped, but Bolger was not hurt. The Mustang body was cracked, and the frame was bent, so the team packed up. As they were towing out, Jungle's rig pulled in without Liberman, as he failed to show. Bolger was at Englishtown in June for one of the Coca-Cola Cavalcade races. In the first round, his 6.72/201.79 lost to Roger Lindamood's 6.53/217. He got back into the show for the semifinal, where he was to race Lindamood again, but Roger broke, so Gary soloed with a 9.04. He was to race Dick Bourgois in the final that never happened due to rain. Another Coke race was run at Atco in July. At that event, Bolger's 6.74/197 beat Gordon Mineo's 7.06/198 in the opening round. In the semifinal, Gary shut down early with problems while racing Fred Goeske. Shortly after that, he showed up at Portland for the 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, his 6.63 in the first round, lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.49. On July 30, Bolger was at Edmonton, Alberta, for its Funny Car Spectacular race. An opening round 7.23/183.67 fell to Liberman's 6.66/193. He also lost in the opening round at Seattle for the Seafair Funny Car Championships when the car lost fire against Don Souter. In August, they were at Fremont for a Cavalcade race. In the first round, Bolger's 6.60 beat Lindamood's quicker 6.53, and in the semifinals, a 6.49 (Low ET) at 209.30 beat Lindamood again at 6.79. Gary went up against the "Sundance" Monza driven by Russell Long in the final. Long got out of shape and crossed the centerline while Bolger ran 6.60/216 for the victory. |
