Notes: On November 1, Richard was at Amarillo to get his Funny Car license. Jake Johnston was there driving the "Blue Max" and it was in this car that Tharp made his licensing runs. At the NHRA Supernationals on November 22 at Ontario Motor Speedway, Richard was the new driver behind the wheel of the "Blue Max." He qualified #9 with a 7.19 and in the first round, was up against low qualifier Don Prudhomme. Tharp was up for the task, running a 6.96 over the "Snake" who had transmission problems. In round two, he beat Rich Siroonian's 7.16 in John Mazmanian's car with a 7.12. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, a steering link broke and he had to shut off giving Larry Arnold a free ride into the final. He won the OCIR final race of '70 on December 5. It was an eight-car show and Tharp dominated. A first-round 6.94/210 beat Stan Shiroma while in the semifinals, his Low ET shot of 6.83/216.34 beat Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster." In the final, a 6.91/216.94 snagged him his first Funny Car victory. He ended his season at Irwindale on December 12 for the Toys for Tots race. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 7.31, but he shut off in his first-round race against Dale Pulde. | Tharp's best NHRA time was 6.966. |

Notes: Tharp was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, driving for Bob Creitz. Dave Babler fouled against him in the first round, and Tharp advanced with a 7.88. In the second round, it was Tharp who fouled, wasting a 6.86 against Dave Chenevert. The team failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Richard qualified for the third OCIR All-Pro race but had problems in the opening round and shut off early against eventual winner Gary Cochran. The team did not race at the Bakersfield March Meet, choosing to run at Lions instead for the second AHRA Grand American race. Both events were run on March 8. It turned out to be a wise move. Tharp won his opening round race with a 6.62 and then made two easy passes, an "odd-lot" solo in round two, and he shut off early in the semifinals when Jimmy King fouled against him. This famous race had Don Garlits' two-speed transmission explode in the final and rip the dragster in half. That explosion happened while racing Tharp in the final. Richard took the victory with a 6.65/223, but few noticed as everyone was looking at the remains of Garlits' car and hoping that he was alright. He lost half his foot, but otherwise, he was ok. Meanwhile, Tharp went to Dallas International the following weekend(March 15) for a best-of-three-match race against Bennie Osborn. Richard won the first two rounds to sew up the match with times of 7.08/200.44 and 7.01/205.94. They still decided to have a third race, and this time, Tharp fouled away a 6.79/217.91. In April, he was at LaPlace for its Spring Drag Festival. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.92 qualified #5. He faced a low qualifier, Chip Woodall, in the first round, and both ended up smoking the tires. Woodall recovered first, and his 7.15/169 beat Tharp's 7.83/132.54. It was then off to Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. Duane Ong fouled against him in the first round, but Tharp lost in round two. On May 17, the team was at Frontier International for the fourth AHRA Grand American race. The Creitz and Donovan team was one of the eight "seeded" cars on tour, and Tharp's 7.09 qualified #4 among this group. An opening round 7.08/209.79 beat Bob Bofysil's 7.34, but in the second round, his 7.04/216.86 lost to King's 6.97/217. Another win came at Bristol on June 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. Tharp beat Jim Harnsberger in the first round with a 6.90. A second-round 7.07/212.76 stopped a tire-smoking, Chris Karamesines, and he got an easy solo in the semifinal when Jim Nicoll blew his engine on the line. He faced surprise finalist Ed Careccia, and Tharp's 6.76/222.22 easily overtook Ed's off-pace 7.48. He was at Dallas International for the NHRA Springnationals on June 14. He beat Vern Anderson in round one before fouling against Don Moody in round two. Laplace held a Top Fuel vs. Funny Car race on June 21 that saw the FCs get a half-second handicap. The mph clocks were out for this event. In Richard's first race, he fouled away a 7.05 in a loss to Dick Harrell's 7.69. He also fouled against Tom McEwen in the second race that had Tharp's 7.12 lose to the Duster's 7.41. He won his last race, running a 7.04 to beat Karamesines 'Cuda. The team was back at Dallas International in July for an eight-car show. Tharp's 6.91 qualified #4, and in the first round, his competition, Dale Emery, fouled. He and Eddie Taylor had a good, close race in the semifinals that saw Taylor's 6.88/213 beat his 6.88/218.97. On August 2, the team was at Epping for the AHRA Grand American race. Tharp ran 6.71/222.22 (Top Speed) in the opening round and 6.75/209.75 in round two over Don Cook. In the semifinal, his 6.78/218 lost to eventual winner Jim Nicoll's 6.72. They were at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships the following weekend. Tharp was running strong again, easily winning his first two races. A 6.76/211.26 advanced over Jim Lutz, who broke in the semifinal. He faced Gary Biggins in the final, and Tharp fouled, giving the win to Biggins at 6.98. At the end of August, he was at Bristol for the eighth AHRA Grand American race. In the opening round, he and his opponent, Preston Davis, smoked the tires, but Tharp's 7.70 won over Davis' 8.94. In round his, his 6.76/223.88 fell to Jimmy King's 6.78/223. | Best NHRA national event times were 6.696/217.39. We need to confirm they were in this car (We are not sure what NHRA event he ran the 6.69/217, but it was not Pomona as Low ET there was 6.74, and Tharp failed to qualify. The team did not compete at Indy that had a 6.73 "bump.") |

Notes: Only weighed 1700 lbs. This is the '70 Don Hardy car Jake Johnson drove to victory at the '70 OCIR Manufacturer's Meet, running a 6.72 Low ET. In '71, Jake moved to Gene Snow's two-car team. Richard Tharp began driving for Harry Schmidt in this car. The Buttera car came later in '71. The photo is from Lions. This was not the car that qualified on the bump at Indy; that was the new Buttera car. | This team sure did a lot of touring in '71. They were a top draw, and track promoters paid big to feature the "Blue Max." On January 10, Tharp was at Lions for the AHRA Grand American race. Over 30 cars attempted to make the sixteen-car field, and the "Blue Max" ran a 6.96 to qualify. In the first round, he improved to a 6.86/216.86 while beating Dale Pulde. In round two, he ran an even better 6.84/215.82 but lost to Jim Dunn's 6.74/191. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #3 with a 7.116/205.94, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Leroy Goldstein in the "Ramchargers" Challenger, 7.16/208 to 7.75/155.70. The next stop was at Southeastern's 900-foot track for its Spring Funny Car Championships. All eight-cars ran two rounds with the winner being based on a points system. The track record going into this race was a 5.66 by Bobby Wood. Tharp reset that down to 5.49. He didn't reach the final as eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman, who was driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" at this event, beat him with a holeshot 5.78 that stopped the "Max's" 5.74. They then went to Southland Dragway for a four-car round-robin show. Tharp faced the brand new cars of Leonard Hughes and Gene Snow. The other car there was Kelly Chadwick's Chevy-powered Camaro. Tharp faced Hughes for his first race, but the Mustang broke a rear end, and Hughes soloed for the win. The "Blue Max" crew changed out the rear end, came back out to make a test run, and ran a track record 7.08 at 194.38. Tharp turned around and got the mph portion of the record as well when on his next run he ran 7.15/209.94 to beat a wheelstanding Hughes. Gene Snow took away some of the glory by running the track's first "six" in the next round. In March, the "Blue Max" crew towed into Dallas for a sixteen-car Top Fuel race. Tharp was not afraid to take on the dragsters with his Funny Car at he qualified #7 with a 6.87/209.30. He ran even quicker in the first round, when his 6.81/214.28 beat Kenny Bernstein's 7.50/205 in Ronnie Wright's car. His 7.00/218.97 lost to Bob Gibson's 7.01/218 in Ray Godman's cad in the second round. The team did not race at Bakersfield or the NHRA Gatornationals. On March 28, Tharp was at the Amarillo Opener. It was another four-car, round-robin race. They seemed to be down on power here as his best runs were a pair of 7.22s while Snow grabbed the track record with a 6.92. On April 18, they were at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was a rough day for the team. Tharp set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.88. He beat Shirl Greer in the opening round, and in round two, he blew an engine but still advanced when Bruce Larson fouled. The team changed motors for their semifinal race with Butch Maas in the "Hawaiian." Unfortunately, in that race, they lost another rear end. Union Grove held its Manufacturers Meet on May 2 and Tharp won over the sixteen-car field. Shortly after that, he faced former "Max" driver Jake Johnston in a best-of-three-match race at Edgewater. Jake won two straight, resetting the track record as well. The two would meet again soon after at Maple Grove with Jake winning that one as well. At least this time it was closer. Tharp overpowered the track in the first race and his 7.41/197.80 lost to Johnston's 6.98/196. In their second race, Jake reset the track ET record with his 6.80/205 beating Tharp, who reset the track's mph record with a 6.91/208.33. In the last race, Tharp laid a holeshot to Johnston that saw his 6.84/207.37 beat the Dodge's quicker 6.81/208. It was ironic that before Tharp's holeshot win at Maple Grove, the two had met in competition six times, and Jake had won all six. Another win came for the team at Martin, Michigan, over an eleven car field. He set a 211.78 track record and, in the final, went up against Pat Minick. The "Chi-Town Hustler's" transmission gave out and Tharp won with a 7.09/202.74. On May 27, Minnesota hosted a four-car event. Tharp beat Terry Hedrick in the first race with a 7.16/179.64 to Terry's 7.84/181. He had a close second race when both he and Maas ran 7.04 (Tharp at 201.79), but the Mustang got the win light. He ran Maas again in his third race, but the "Hawaiian" never finished its run as it sheared a rear axle while Tharp won with a 7.07/207.85. On the Memorial Day Weekend, Martin, Michigan, held an eight-car show that had all cars make three runs. Tharp was there and in his first race, he ran 7.11/205.01 to beat Minick's quicker 7.05/208. In his second race, he lost a close one to Don Prudhomme that saw the "Snake's" 7.13/200 edge his 7.15/198.67 for the win. He also lost his third race to Tom McEwen. At the NHRA Springnationals in Dallas, the dated "Blue Max" qualified #10 with a 6.975/210.77. In the first round, Richard improved to 6.82/213.77 to beat #2 qualifier Prudhomme's 6.92/211. He then lost to Henry Harrison who was driving Mickey Thompson's Mustang in round two, 6.84/214 to 6.94/206.42. A week later (June 20), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Tharp beat Clare Sanders (Chi-Town), Leroy Goldstein (Ramchargers), and Tommy Grove's Ford-powered Mustang, in that order, to reach the final. He faced Don Schumacher, and Tharp's 6.97/207 was good for the runner-up money as Schumacher won with a 6.87/209. Two days later, he was at Miami-Hollywood for a six-car show. He didn't win, but all three of his runs were in the sixes. As mentioned, the team toured a lot. July started with the team running in Canada on the 1st, on the 2nd they were in Wisconsin, it was Michigan on the 3rd, and on the 4th, they were in Minnesota for the afternoon and Iowa that night. On Monday the 5th, they were in South Dakota. The team was able to pick and choose their bookings. |

Notes: This new John Buttera car made its debut at Indy '71, replacing the team's venerable 1970 Don Hardy Mustang. Richard qualified on the bump at 6.889/215.82 and surprised Leroy Goldstein in round one, 6.72/216.00 to 6.93/216.34. He broke against Connie Kalitta in round two. Richard qualified #5 at the Ontario Supernationals at 6.928/207.37. He beat Mart Higginbotham in round one, 7.00/206.89 to 7.22/186. Mike Snively coasted to a 15-second win in round two when the Max broke. |

Notes: Won IHRA Longhorn Nationals at Dallas International Motor Speedway in early June by defeating Pat Foster. Richard ran 6.37/225.00 against Pat's 6.40/227.27. Came out with flamed paint job later in the year. Ran 6.671/213.27 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge 8/72. | Tharp won the Miami Funny Car race on Jan 9. It was a sixteen-car field and in the final, the "Max" dropped Jerry Jokerst's Firebird. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, almost 40 cars showed for the sixteen spots and Tharp headed the list of qualifiers with a 6.70. In the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.57 beating Jerry Ruth. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the second round and crossed the centerline while racing Gene Snow. The team did a lot of match racing for a cash guarantee, but when they showed up at the national events, they were a team worth watching. On March 6 they were at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. Harry Schmidt and Tharp woke up to find that someone had "borrowed" their transporter. The police found it in time for the team to race, but a complete engine plus an extra blower and injector were gone. They had to borrow parts to race. After piecing together an engine, Richard goes out and runs a 6.62, good enough for the pole. A first-round 6.81 beat Jake Johnston's 6.87. In round two the "Max" got a solo when Don Schumacher broke a rear end. In the semifinals, a 6.61 (Low ET) beat a crossed up Arnie Behling in the "Ramchargers" Demon. In the final, Tharp grabbed the victory with a 6.86 over Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto. |

Notes: Also ran 6.50 at Martin. | Tharp was at the AHRA Winternationals in January, but he lost to eventual winner Don Schumacher in the semifinals. He qualified #2 at Miami-Hollywood for the Funny Car Nationals with a 6.75, but failed to make the finals. The team failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals, but that was more due to horrendous track conditions. Miami held another Funny Car race late in February Tharp qualified #1 for the eight-car show and then beat Lou Azar in the "Fireball Vega" with a 6.84/205.01. In the semifinals, he had a close race with Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler.” Richard's 6.71/211.76 nipped Ron's 6.70/213. He faced "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final, and he ran a strong 6.70/215.82, but it wasn't strong enough to beat JJ's 6.65/216. In March, the "Max" was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. Richard qualified #1 with a 6.87, but was upset in the first round, by Harlan Thompson's 6.96 to his 7.02. He was back in Miami for another Funny Car race in March where he qualified #4. Tharp lost in the semifinals. The team attended the Hang Ten Funny Car 500 at OCIR, but failed to reach the finals. On April 28 they were at Capitol for an eight-car show. Tharp was one of four cars that ran 6.50s. He made it into the final before losing to Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer Vega. The following day (April 29), was a bad day for the "Blue Max" team. They were at Atco for a race, but Tharp had an oil line break and spray oil onto the headers. The Mustang body went up in frames. Richard bailed out of the flaming inferno at about 30 mph. He was OK other than a hurt shoulder from jumping from the car. Because of the fire, Tharp showed up at Rockingham on May 6th for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships driving a borrowed Mustang from Billy Meyer. The team used its own engine in the car. He qualified #11 for the show with a 7.63, but in the first round, they shocked everybody with an amazing 6.33 (Low ET) at 211.26 that beat Colson's 6.58/221. In round two he slowed to 6.82/221.67, but it was still enough to beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" Charger. Tharp's run came to an end in the semifinals where the Mustang went into a wheelstand and lost to Foster's 6.44/225. He was still using Meyer's car on May 20 when the team showed at Muncie for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Richard qualified #1 with a 6.78 and then beat Danny Miller in the first round. A 6.71/217 got around Safford in round two, but in the semifinals, his 'chute fell off on the line and Foster soloed into the final. In June, Tharp was at York US 30 for a best of three match race against Colson. The "Chi-Town" bunch had problems as they broke a crank in the first race of the match. So, Tharp won the first race with a 7.14 and made two singles with a best of 7.15/203 to win the match. Things didn't go well at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where the "Blue Max" failed to qualify. Tharp was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he was there without a car, so he assisted Foster's team who went on to finish runner-up. |

Notes: Tharp drove the Blue Max early in the year and then the Pure Hell (where he went 6.481-222.43) and then Huff's Dart, which qualified at 6.494-221.67 at Ontario and went 6.410-226.13 in a first-round win over Twig Ziegler's 6.53-222.77. He lost to Prudhomme in round two, 6.87 to 19.83. But that was the Soapy Sales Dodge Dart, not the Challenger. When did Tharp drive the Challenger in 1973? |

Notes: We are not sure Tharp drove for Schmidt in 1974. NHRA.com (Phil Burgess) wrote that he ran for Schmidt through 1973 and then moved on to Burkhart. |

Notes: Tharp was driving for Don Schumacher at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA Grand Am Nationals. He qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.51, but he didn't last long in eliminations. He ran 6.38 at Tri-City. Tharp match raced Jungle Jim at Numidia. There is a video newly uploaded to YouTube of early 70s Numidia Dragway footage. A Schumacher car vs. Jungle Jim match race is seen towards the end of the tape. It sure looks like Tharp in the Schumacher car. He is even driving the car in the pits. See it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-D_z1Zy5aRorn |

Notes: Tharp started the '75 season in this car at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #12. He lost to Shirl Greer in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #9 with a 6.373/223.88. He lost to Bill Leavitt in the first round. He failed to qualify at the next couple of races, the IHRA Winternationals, where it was only an eight-car show, and at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.617 just missed (first alternate). He was at Odessa International Raceway in Texas for its Winternationals. A first-round 6.92/212.76 beat Larry Gould's Mustang; in the semifinals, a 7.67 beat Chip Woodall's out-of-shape Satellite. He lost in the final to John White driving Ron Salisbury's Vega. He ran a best of 6.70 in eliminations at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, but a blown rear end in the semifinals against Greer ended his chances for a win. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.686/216.86 was the first alternate, but he won the fourth NHRA Division 4 race at Oklahoma City. Won Division 4 in 1975. The only non-GM Funny Car that Burkhart ran sold to Larry Brown? Did Richard run a 6.345 somewhere in this car? |

Notes: Richard was low qualifier at Indy 1979 with a 5.810. "Texas & Tharp: Damnest Things You Ever Saw." | Tharp started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #10. He faced Shirley Muldowney in the first round, and she unleashed Low ET of the meet, a 5.81 to beat Tharp's 6.00. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the "Candies and Hughes" entry barely made the show, running 6.13/241.28 to qualify on the "bump.” An off-pace 6.50/222.22 in the first round, lost to Johnny Abbott's 6.21/234. Things went even worse at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun nationals where the team failed to qualify for the eight-car show. The next stop on the NHRA tour was the Springnationals. Although Richard's 6.07/240.00 only qualified #15, he made it all the way to the final. Tharp beat Larry Dixon with a 6.02/240.64, Steve Stephens with a 6.13/240.64 and Rob Bruins in the semifinals with a 6.22/234.98 to earn the right to face Don Garlits in the final. This was Tharp's first NHRA National event final since the '77 US Nationals. Unfortunately, a 6.51/183.29 was good for the runner-up spot to Don's 6.11/236. Another non-qualifying effort was turned at Denver where they failed to make the eight-car show for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. The team really picked up the pace by the time they rolled into Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.87 qualified them #3 in the field. In round one Tharp's 5.94/247 beat Muldowney's 6.08/242, but in round two his 5.90 was beaten by Garlits' 5.91. It was then off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals in early August. Once again Tharp qualified #3, this time a 5.91/245.90 (Top Speed) got him the spot in the eight-car field. He beat Dixon in the first round, with a 5.90 and a semifinal 5.88 beat Bob Noice in the Brissette and Drake car. This time his final round opponent was Connie Kalitta. Tharp got the win with his 5.86 beating Kalitta's 6.06 for the title. There were over 60 cars attempting to qualify at Indy for the 32-car field at the NHRA US Nationals and Tharp came out on top in qualifying, running a 5.81/248.61 for the #1 spot. He beat Stephens in the first round, and he got to solo in round two when Noice's Donovan lost fire after his burnout. But in the third round a 6.00/245.23 lost to eventual winner Kelly Brown's 5.90/236. The NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle was a race Tharp would probably rather forget. He qualified #14 with a 6.00/243.24 and a quick-leaving 6.01/243.24 in the first round, beat Dave Uyehara's quicker 5.98/233. But in the second round, he faced Hank Johnson. Hank had to shut off on the line with a fuel leak and Tharp was to solo for the round win. Lane choice was important so Richard got on it and the car got out of the groove and off the track where it proceeded to roll several times. Tharp was taken to the hospital and treated for a concussion, but the car was totaled. He drove John Kimble's car at the season finale. In the season long points chase he still finished tenth. |

Notes: Texas & Tharp - Damnedest Things You Ever Seen. One thing for sure, Tharp wasn't scared to put his foot into it until the last mph light. Always a threat for Top Speed of the meet, Tharp qualified #7 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.90/247.93. He ran a first-round 6.01/246.57 over Marvin Graham. Tharp beat Frank Bradley in the second round with a 6.05/243.90 to Frank's 6.12/220. In the semifinals, Connie Kalitta's 5.98/238 beat his 6.11/243.90. They went to Gainesville for the Gatornationals and didn't qualify well (#11), but he still made it to the semifinals after beating Shirley Muldowney in round two. He then lost to Gary Beck. Richard grabbed a big win the following week (March 23) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.20 and beat Jeb Allen in the first round, in a close 6.02/243.24 to Allen's 6.03/238. In the semifinals, Dick LaHaie broke, giving Tharp an easy (?) 6.06/243.90 (Top Speed) run into the final to face Connie Kalitta. Both had run bests of 6.02 at the event, so it was anticipated to be close. Unfortunately for Kalitta, he smoked the tires and lost with a 7.25/132 while Tharp motored to a 6.05/243.90 win. On March 30, NHRA held its second Division 4 race at Green Valley. Tharp qualified #1 with a 6.18 and set Top Speed at 238.72, but he lost in the semifinals to Beck's 6.39/222 with a close 6.41/234.98. The team was headed to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships but never made it as their transporter broke down. Beck stopped him again on April 27 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Tharp qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 5.98/245.90, but a first-round 6.05 lost to Gary's 6.04. He took another first-round loss at the Divisional race at Gulfport International, where his 6.11/234.98 lost to Jeb Allen's 6.09/240. He looked as if he was on the way to a sure victory at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying at 5.82/247.25 and stopped Jeb in the first round, with a 5.91/243 to Allen's 5.95/242. In the semifinal, a 5.95/240 beat Mark Oswald's 6.09/237. In the final, he was to face Bob Hilton in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car, but Tharp lost a rear end, and Hilton soloed for the win. The team then traveled to National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals on June 8 with high expectations. A 5.93/242.58 qualified #1, but in round one, their 6.03 was beaten by Kalitta's 5.97. It was a bitter disappointment for the team, especially since they ran so well. On June 28, they were at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Tharp beat Don Garlits in the first round of the eight-car show with a 6.13/240.00 (Top Speed). Jerry Ruth stole their thunder in the semifinals, running a track record 5.98/231 over Tharp's 6.06/235.60. Another #1 qualifying position came at the NHRA Summernationals. This time, a 5.85/245.90 got the spot. A first-round 5.90/243.90 beat Bradley's 5.98/233, but Tharp lost to Dick LaHaie in the second round, despite setting Top Speed at 246.57 trying to catch him. The following week (July 20) found the team a Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tharp qualified #4 with a 5.96 and improved to a 5.82/243.90 in the first round while beating Hilton. In the semifinals, he slowed to a 6.07 and lost to Oswald's 5.94/245. On August 3, it all came together at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. They qualified #1 with a 5.87/240.64 (nobody else was in the fives), set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.86/247.25, beating Kalitta, and in the semifinals, set Top Speed with a 5.92/247.93 pass that took out Hilton's 5.98/236. In the final, Richard met Jeb Allen and beat him with a 5.91/247.25 to Jeb's 6.20/237. The 247.93 was a new IHRA speed record. The team bypassed the NHRA Grandnationals event in Canada. At the US Nationals, a 5.85/237.46 qualified #4, and in round one, his 6.02/244.56 defeated Neil Mahr's 6.43/223. But in round two, the car smoked the tires hard, and he lost to Kalitta. Notes: Tharp started the '81 season by qualifying #13 with a 5.97/236.84 at the NHRA Winternationals. Despite the relatively poor starting position, Richard picked up to a first-round 5.78 (Low ET) at 245 over Gary Cornwall's 5.92/238. A second round 5.83/243 beat low qualifier Jerry Ruth's 5.95/240. Tharp slipped to a 6.03 in the semifinal, losing to Marvin Graham's 5.96. At the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals, on March 15, Richard's 5.82/240.64 qualified #7. A first-round 5.91/243.24 beat Terry Capp, but Jody Smart's 5.87/245 beat his 5.91/243.90 in round two. The following week (March 22), the Candies and Hughes team was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.03/230 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. Tharp picked up to a 5.95/237 in the first round, to beat a wheelstanding Don Garlits. In the semifinal, a 5.97/232 beat Dick LaHaie, and in the final, he soloed to the victory when Smart's car broke on the line. Tharp was definitely not happy when their best of 5.97 failed to qualify for the eight-car show in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. On May 17, Tharp was runner-up to Jeb Allen at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.85 and a first-round 6.0,6 beat alternate Richard Holcomb. He ran another 6.06 in the semifinals to beat Butch Osmon's quicker 6.01 in the Jim and Allison Lee car. But in the final, a tire smoking 11.91/53.41 lost to Allen's 5.99/248. It was strange to see the Candies and Hughes fueler on the bump, but that's where they were at State Capitol Dragway for the NHRA Cajun Nationals on May 24. A 5.97/245.90 got them the #8 spot in the eight-car field. Tharp's 6.01 in the first round advanced when Gary Beck fouled. But in round two, a tire smoking 6.27/231.36 lost to Allen's 6.02/243. Things were worse at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals when Tharp's best of 6.07/232.55 was good for the fifth alternate. There was a bit of irony in the team's next win. It came at the IHRA Northern Nationals, and Tharp beat Mark Oswald for the title. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals in July, Richard ran a 5.94/241.28 to qualify #2. Unfortunately, Doug Kerhulas stepped up to a 5.99 in the first round to beat Tharp's 6.03. The Candies and Hughes team always ran well at the NHRA Summernationals, and in '81 they qualified second with a 5.76/246.57. A first-round 5.86/246.57 beat Frank Bradley, but in round two, Oswald (that name again) beat Tharp's 5.92/243 with a 5.90/243. Richard was running some big speeds at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. During qualifying, he set Top Speed at 249.30. He beat Connie Kalitta's 6.03/231 in the first round, with a 5.83/247.93. In the semifinals, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires to a 6.05/245.90 loss to Beck's 5.83/236. The team looked like they were on their way to a win at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. A 5.88/242.58 only qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but a first-round 6.04/243.90 beat Kalitta. In the semifinals, Tharp set track records of 5.74/250.00 on a solo pass when Johnny Abbott couldn't show. But in the final, his KB engine threw a blower belt, giving Marvin Graham an easy 7.08 pass for the win. Photo from Indy 1981. |

Notes: Owners of Rio Airlines. Tharp qualified in the ninth spot at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona with a 5.850 245.09. Richard qualified #5 at the 1983 Gators with a 5.748. He improved to a 5.636 in the second round, but that lost to Gary Beck's amazing 5.492. Photo from '83 Cajun Nationals. There, Tharp was the #5 qualifier but lost to Gary Beck in the first round. The team would go on to win NHRA Columbus and was runner-up at NHRA Atlanta. They were low qualifier/Low ET at NHRA Sanair and low qualifier at NHRA Englishtown. They made it to the semis at Indy and the World Finals but lost to Joe Amato and Shirley Muldowney. The car went to Gene Snow, then to Dan Pastorini. Richard ran 5.608/242.58 at IHRA Bristol Spring. |

Notes: Tharp was at the Texas Motorplex in April for the IHRA Texas Nationals. His 5.80/242.45 qualified #14, but he lost to Mike Dunn in the first round, of competition. On May 15, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. There, his 5.61 qualified #6, but he lost to R.C. Sherman in the opening round. Photo from Columbus 1988. Richard drove the 'Max for most of the NHRA season, although Ronny Young took over at the World Finals. Richard's best NHRA times were a 5.569 in eliminations at Seattle and 259.94 in a second alternate effort at Columbus. Where did Richard run 5.40/270? We may need to remove those times. |
