Notes: Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from hand written run sheet from Lions Funny Car match race at Lions on 6/12/71. Sopwith Camel ran a nice 6.95/207.37 in the first round. We need to confirm that was Mike driving. Was jim terry involved? | Yes, per the 70’s Funny Cars website, info supplied by Gordon Swearingen, this car was owned by Thermos and Jim Terry, and was driven by Swearingen after Ron Rivero drove it briefly. There is no mention of Thermos driving, as he was, at that time, busy getting NOS (Nitrous Oxide Systems) up and running. Swearingen states that the car qualified at all the events they ran but did not “light the world on fire” with it. Swearingen says the car was campaigned less often than he and Terry wanted, so in 1974 they left and formed their own team. JM |

Notes: We need to confirm that they actually ran a Camaro body on the car. Or did they go from the Cuda to the Mustang? Who ran 7.37/196, Thermos or Ron Rivero? Was Jim Terry involved? | Per the 70’s Funny Cars website, info supplied by Gordon Swearingen, the Sopwith Camel Cuda owned by Mike Thermos and Jim Terry... Thermos supplied the body and chassis, Terry the engine and Gordy Swearingen drove after a short stint in the cockpit by Ron Rivero. According to Gordy, the Fletcher chassised car qualified at all the events it entered, but "didn't set the world on fire." Team stuck pretty close to its SoCal home; furthest trip from home was AHRA Winternationals in Phoenix. During this same time period Thermos was trying to get Nitrous Oxide Systems (NOS) up and running... the car was campaigned less frequently than the rest of the team would have liked so in 74 Terry and Swearingen left the Camel camp and debuted a Mustang flopper... Camel was sold to Div 6 racer Joe Clement, ran with a Cuda body through 75 before being rebodied as a Monza. JM |

Notes: First Ride in a funny car. Ran 8.14 at OCIR. | On August 7, Charlie was at Green Valley Raceway for an eight-car show. He beat Al Vanderwoude in the first round, with a 7.99, but in the semifinals, his transmission let go against Ted DeTar. |

Notes: Charlie qualified #3 with a 7.28/196.50 at Irwindale for the Pumpkin Day Funny Car Open race at the end of October. That was pretty impressive considering that 25 cars were attempting to qualify. Another 7.28 at 187.10 beat Ed McCulloch's 7.59/202 in the first round, but in the semifinals, he got crossed up and shut off against Gene Conway. |

Notes: Charles took over the ride from Mart Higginbotham in 1971. Without a doubt, Charlie had the strongest Chevy-powered Funny Car of '71. He started the year by qualifying at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals with a 7.73. In the first round, he lost to Jake Johnston's 7.13/191 with a 7.74/184.42. Those times might not look very good, but by April, his Chevy was humming right along with the Hemis. On April 18, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He sure opened some eyes when he took out Tommy Grove's SOHC-powered Mustang in the semifinals with a holeshot 6.94/206.42 to beat Tom's quicker 6.88/208. In the final, he ran Butch Maas driving the "Hawaiian." Therwhanger improved to a 6.91/208.33 to get the victory over Butch's 7.02/201. He lost early at York US 30 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. A first-round 7.12/201.79 lost to Ed McCulloch's slower 7.13/209. In June, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but he lost to eventual winner Don Schumacher in the second round. On August 22, Therwhanger was at Englishtown for a four-car match. A 7.15/20.85 beat Fred Goeske, who smoked the tires in his first race. In his second race, he got crossed-up and shut down in a loss to "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Charlie ran his best time of the day on his last race, a 6.92/207.85 to beat Gary Henderson's 7.21/208 in the "Super Duster." |

Notes: By '72, Chevy-powered FCs were done. Therwhanger had put up a good fight in '71, but the new "stroker" Hemis had no problem putting away the Chevy-powered cars. The "Rat" motored cars were lucky just to qualify. Just don't tell that to Therwhanger. He had Pete Bagnard build him a new Vega that sat on a 115" chassis. Charlie knew how to build big-inch Chevy engines, and the 440 that powered his car was based on a truck block. The internals included Arias 6:1 pistons and a Howards cam. Up top sits a 30% overdriven GMC 6/71 built by Air Research. The 90% nitro load was fed to the motor by a Crower eight-hole injector. The power was transferred to the 3.90 rear by a two-speed Lenco transmission. Charlie was at Green Valley Raceway in May for the AHRA Nationals. In the opening round, he lost a blower against Don Schumacher. He also ran at the New England Open but lost early. Early in June, he was at Dallas for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals. Charlie had the only Chevy-powered car to qualify as he ran 7.27 for the #14 spot. Unfortunately, the parachute fell out on the line in the first round, and Dale Pulde soloed into round two. A couple of days later, he was at Capitol Raceway for the Mr. Chevrolet race. But he had more bad luck there as he broke against Charlie Wilson in the first round. In July, he raced at Atco for its Funny Car Championships, but he lost to eventual winner Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max" in the opening round. He went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals but was the sixth alternate (times unavailable). He also lost to Tharp in the first round, at the IHRA Empire Nationals. He qualified #7 on the Western team and #17 overall at the Amarillo World Finals (times unavailable). He hit the guard rail and lost to Butch Maas in round one. Charles was a DNQ at the Ontario World Finals. |

Notes: Therwhanger was at Miami-Hollywood on Jan 9 for a sixteen-car show. Nineteen cars attempted to qualify, and while Therwhanger didn't win or even make the finals, the "pure" Chevy-powered Camaro did run a best of 7.11, giving a good account of itself. |

Notes: Charlie qualified the new Vega at NHRA Pomona, claiming the #8 spot at 6.952/205.94. Jim Dunn defeated him in round one, 7.21/184 to 14.53/49. Charlie was the sixth alternate at the Summernationals (times unavailable). He qualified #7 on the Western team and #17 overall at the Amarillo World Finals (times unavailable). He hit the guard rail and lost to Butch Maas in round one. Charles was a DNQ at the Ontario World Finals. Charles drove both this Vega and the Hombre Vega in 1972. I think he was in the Hombre from May onward but need to validate. |
