Notes: Confirmed 7.166 at Maple Grove 9/93. Where was the 7.158 run? | Mike qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.23/191.12. An even better 7.22/191.12 lost to Scott Geoffrion's 7.17/192 in the first round. At the Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, a 7.25/190.39 qualified #5. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 7.29/189.23 in the first round, against Jerry Eckman. At Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals, Mike was third alternate with a 7.17/191.65 best. The NHRA tour's next stop was at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. Mike ran a great 7.16/192.88, but even that was only good for the first alternate in the quick field. He was first alternate again at the NHRA Winston Invitational with a 7.24/190.67 best. Thomas continued to struggle in qualifying at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 7.25/191.04 was third alternate there. Things were even worse at Memphis when he was eighth alternate running 7.33. At Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals, it was more of the same, a 7.22/192.10 failed to qualify (fifth alternate). He clicked at the Springnationals, qualifying #15 with a 7.29/189.31, but a 7.33/189.15 lost to Kurt Johnson's 7.28/190 in the first round. A 7.30/188.71 qualified #14 at the NHRA Western Nationals. He advanced past the first-round with a 7.57/185.37 when Steve Schmidt fouled against him. But in round two, it was he who fouled against Larry Morgan. At Denver for the Mile High Nationals, Thomas qualified #15 with a 7.70/178.07. But in the first round, he faced Warren Johnson and he pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled running a 7.72/177.30 while WJ motored to a 7.61/182 for the win. Thomas really stood out at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. He ran 7.21/191.32 to qualify #5 in the field. He out-qualified the likes of WJ, Bob Glidden, Kurt Johnson, Morgan, etc. In the first round, he beat Jerry Haas' 7.33/190 with a 7.30/189.95, but in round two he lost to Morgan. At Seattle for the Northwest Nationals, he again qualified strong, running 7.20/191.20 for the #9 spot on the grid. Unfortunately, he fouled away a first-round 7.22/190.67 against Gary Brown. He qualified #10 at Brainerd for the Champion Auto Stores Nationals with a 7.27/189.75. Both he and Bruce Allen ran 7.35's in round one, with Mike getting the win. In round two, he faced WJ and he fouled, shutting off to a 7.65/176.40.

Notes: Mike qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.11/194.09. In the opening round, his 7.13/193.29 defeated George Marnell's 7.24/190. In the second round, his 7.16/192.43 lost to Kurt Johnson's 7.15/193. He qualified #7 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 7.15/192.30. Thomas was late off the line in the first round, and his 7.19/191.89 fell to Gary Brown's 7.22/191. His next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. Shortly after that, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 7.13/193.25 qualified #7. Another 7.13 at 192.59 beat Billy Ewing's 7.20/192 in the first round. But he slowed to 7.18/192.06 in the second round and lost to Scott Geoffrion's 7.10/195. He then went to Rockingham in April for the NHRA Invitational race. He ended up as the first alternate for the sixteen-car field with a 7.16/193.88. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA Calendar, and Mike qualified #15 at 7.17/193.05. He faced Geoffrion in round one and fouled away a 7.23/193. He had to to the chance as Geoffrion advanced with a 7.05/196 and went on to win. These Pro Stock races were challenging to qualify at, and at Memphis, he just made the field, running 7.24/191.16 for the "bump" at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Notes: Mike was the tenth alternate at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals with a 7.17/192.14. He also failed to qualify at Richmond for the NHRA Virginia Nationals, where he was the thirteenth alternate at 7.31/191.00. The following week (June 11), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There, a 7.32/189.15 was the ninth alternate. His next stop was at Topeka in the first week of July for the NHRA Western Nationals. He ended up as the tenth alternate there at 7.22/191.97. He then made the trip to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A 7.64/180.03 was the eighth alternate for the show. He was getting closer to making the field at Sonoma for the NHRA Autolite Nationals, where he was the fourth alternate at 7.17/192.34. One week later (August 6), he came even closer as his 7.15/192.67 was the third alternate at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals.
