Notes: Thomas was at Capitol Raceway on May 9 for an eight-car show. His 7.12 qualified #4, and in the opening round, his 7.15/208.32 defeated Larry Bucher. In the semifinal, his 7.28/206.88 lost to eventual winner Richie Broughton's 6.93/220. Later in the month, he was at York U.S. 30 for the NHRA Division 1 opener. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.64. A 6.96/207.37 beat Fred Forkner, but he shut off against Tom Raley in the semifinal. Englishtown held an eight-car show in the middle of June, and Thomas set Low ET in qualifying #1 at 6.74. Unfortunately, the car failed to fire for its first-round race against Bernie Schacker. Appeared on the NHRA qualifying lists for the York Summernationals as "James" Thomas. Assuming that was actually Ted. Qualified #11 at York at 6.93/155.70 and won a thrilling round one match on a holeshot over Tom Raley, 7.168/166.66 to 7.080/202.24. Richie Broughton took a close 7.09/207.85 to 7.11/174.75 win over the team in round two. Notes: The team ran 6.70s consistently on the NHRA national event trail in 1971. They were the #9 qualifier at the Englishtown Summernationals at 6.755 but got disqualified for going off the track in round one. A 6.77/217.39 did not qualify at Indy. A 6.792/217.39 did qualify at Ontario, however, and they went rounds. Ted beat Rick Ramsey in round one, 6.72/213.77 to 6.77/161. Chip Woodall beat Ted in Round two, 6.55/212 to 6.72/211.26. Notes: Ted attempted to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Unfortunately, his 6.368/232.55 best was the 4th alternate. On April 15, the "Jade Grenade" bunch was at Cecil County for its National Open. It was an eight-car show, and Ted qualified the car #3 with a 6.50. An opening round 6.99/211.26 defeated a late leaving Bob Tororete at 6.75/207. But Thomas went into hard tire smoke in the semifinal, and his 7.03/216.86 lost to Casey Powell's 6.71/211. The team was also the 5th alternate at Columbus and the 9th at Englishtown (no times available for either). | We need to confirm when Jon Asher and Sarge Arciero bought the team/name from Ted Thomas and Pete Lenhoff. It looks to be mid-1973 with this new S&W car. Bill Flurer stayed with the team and continued to tune. It was mid-73. Sarge Arciero drove the "Grenade" to a win at the Atco WWCS race late in the year. It MAY have been the same car, but previous paint job, no wheel pants. - Tim S
