Notes: Eddie and Junior Thompson, brothers, ran a '57 Chevy engine in their Studebaker gasser. Although the class at the time was just called B/G, it was essentially B/GS. Thompson and Doug Cook were scheduled to face each other in a match race at San Fernando on Jan. 18 to determine who had the fastest B/GS car, but both cars blew their engines before the racing could begin. At the Gold Cup race at Santa Ana on Feb. 22, Eddie and Junior Thompson became the first to qualify a car for both top eliminator and little top eliminator spots. Thompson set a new time record for B/GS cars with 11.95 seconds, clocking a speed of 109.79 mph. He also turned times of 12.00, 12.10, and 12.31. They easily won Little Top Eliminator but couldn't get past Ray Rucker's B/A coupe in the top eliminator final. At the Bakersfield March Meet on Mar. 1, Thompson had to rebuild his blower and fix his engine, but everything held together for him to win the B/GS class with 112.09 mph. On Mar. 8 at Santa Ana, the Thompsons set a new top speed mark with 112.50 mph in B/GS, covering the quarter in 12.40 seconds. However, his supercharger came unglued just before the Little Eliminator final, putting him out of contention. Thompson beat Glen McCulloch in the B/GS finals at Santa Ana on Mar. 15, clocking 12.24 at 115.25 mph. On Apr. 5 at San Gabriel, the Thompson brothers won the B/GS class with 12.59 at 107.85 mph. They took the first round of Gas Eliminator against the McCulloch-Fitzgerald A Gasser, turning 12.94 at 106.25 mph. However they got eliminated in the next run by the dual Paxton supercharged A Gasser of O'Brien-Holthaus. However, in a quirk of fate, Junior Thompson was awarded the Gas Eliminator title when O'Brien declined to tear down his engine after a protest was lodged against him. Thompson took wins in B/GS on both days of the 2-day Double Eliminator Meet at Lions on May 23-24. He won on the first day with 12.30 at 114.21 mph and on the second day with 11.99 at 114.50 mph. The Thompson brothers won B/GS class at Lions on June 14 with 11.97 at 115.83 mph. At San Fernando on Aug. 11, the brothers took a B/GS win with 12.09 at 110.29 mph. At Lions on Aug. 22, the Thompsons won their class with 12.58 at 111.80 mph. They were an early entrant to go to the U.S. Nationals in Detroit, but for some reason, they didn't go. They stayed in California. On Aug. 29 at San Gabriel, they took B/GS with 12.25 at 113.78 mph. However, he froze up his blower and had to retire from competing for Little Eliminator. At Lions on Sep. 19, the brothers took a B/GS win with 12.36 at 112.35 mph. At Lions on Oct. 10, they won their class with 12.14 at 110.56 mph. While they racked up wins right and left, it wasn't because there wasn't any competition as the class included such luminaries as Doug Cook, national record-holder K. S. Notes: In 1965, Junior made the big move into A/GS. He got a 1950 Austin Sedan body and put a Chrysler 57/58 engine in it. It ran 155 mph in 9.03 seconds. This was a revolutionary car in that it was built to the minimum allowable wheelbase of 92 inches. It was the shortest legal wheelbase, and with it, he set the NHRA and AHRA national records in A/GS.
