Notes: Thompson was at Lions on March 15 for an eight-car show. He qualified #6 with an 8.94, but an improved 8.84/158.17 in the first round, lost to Mike Mitchell's 8.65/162. Jr. Topped a four-car field of Gassers at U.S. 30 Gary, Indiana, on June 28. He beat K.S. Pittman in the first race with an 8.68/169. He beat the Stone, Woods & Cook Mustang Gasser in his second race with an 8.59/173. Thompson faced off against George Montgomery's SOHC Mustang in the final race. It was quite a race with Thompson's 8.46/181.74 (first AA/GS run over 180) to George's quicker 8.43/177. Not sure we agree with these times since they were turned at a track notorious for giving false times. | Previously listed 181 with no associated track.

Notes: Match racer, fielded by Gasser great. Junior built the funny car after promoters stopped booking gassers around the country. Car AKA the Burgundy Bandit. Junior ran 7.52 at Tri-City. | Junior Thompson's new Satellite for '74 used a 110" Ken Cox chassis. It used a 392 Hemi with a huge 3/4 Moldex stroker crank and a .030 overbore to displace 474 cubic inches. The motor used Howards rods with Jahns pistons and an Isky cam. The '55 cylinder heads were worked over by Fudge. On top of the engine sat a Don Hampton-prepared GMC 6/71 that used a Cragar blower drive. Hilborn injection fed the alcohol. The transmission was a three-speed Lenco that transferred the power back to a Halibrand quick-change rear end with 4.30 gears. The car only weighed 1,700 Lbs. The engine put out about 1,200 hp.

Notes: Junior Thompson was at Beech Bend for its Fourth of July Alcohol Funny Car race. It was an eight-car show, and his first-round 7.26 beat Denny Fedele's 7.56, but in the semifinals, he faced Ken Veney's Vega, which was pretty much unstoppable at this time. Notes: Thompson qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.81/200.44. Junior was at Beech Bend on August 2 for an eight-car show. His 6.94 defeated Bud Williams in the opening round, but a 7.01/200.44 fell to Cliff Sewell's 6.77/206 in the semifinal. Steve McCracken-bodied Corvette that match raced from coast to coast with a lot of success. 1981 UDRA champion.

Notes: Crashed in a near-fatal accident at Norwalk, Ohio, in May 1982. Someone had forgotten to remove three cinder blocks left in front of the timing lights in the center of the strip near the end. Junior hit them with his rear slick, going over 200 mph. The car flipped end over end at least ten times, completely destroying the fiberglass body. Thanks to the well-built chassis, Junior miraculously sustained no broken bones. Although his helmet roll cage saved his life, the crash caused his head to be severely beaten against it, causing a severe concussion and brain contusion. It took Junior five years to recover and ended his driving career. Junior returned to the nostalgia gasser wars in 1987 with son Tommy at the wheel.

Notes: When Mickey Thompson first began running his dragster, the body was made from cardboard and tape! By late summer, he had built a more stable, somewhat streamlined body for it, with Panorama City Special emblazoned on the side. The rear wheels were completely covered by the body, but the front wheels were exposed. He debuted his dragster at Pomona on Apr. 3, beating Ed Losinsky on his first outing to win the dragster class with 137.87 mph. The report in Drag News stated that "his weird appearing dragster dusted off all competition." On May 15, he sped to a new track record in an NHRA regional at Colton with 144.46 mph. It was the top speed of the meet. Although the dragster was doing well, Thompson was experimenting with things. On June 19, he brought his weird-looking dragster to Pomona with a radically different motor: a Ranger 4-cylinder aircraft engine. He made a few runs, but observers thought it "might prove to be the engine in his forthcoming four wheel drive rig." On June 26, he showed up at Pomona with a four-cylinder Monasco aircraft engine mounted in a dragster chassis. His partner in that dragster was Backer, but it isn't known if he was using the same cardboard-tape weird-looking dragster. They took the win in the four-barrel fuel class with a record-setting 118.42 mph. Mickey was nothing if not creative in his quest for going fast. On July 24, Mickey made a brief morning appearance at Pomona, making three runs before leaving at noon for the races at Santa Ana. He pulled the Ardun-Merc out of the dragster and dropped in Ray Brown's Chrysler engine. His first run off the trailer was 139, followed by 140, then finished up with a new strip record of 143.31 mph. He then towed his dragster to Santa Ana. But Lloyd Scott's fabulous new twin-engined "Bustle Bomb" was in the house. Lloyd got all the attention with a 144.95 mph run on only its second outing. With Ray Brown's Chrysler Marine engine in his dragster, he set a new world record and strip record at San Fernando on Sep. 4 with a speed of 151.26 mph. He was only the second man in history to crack the 150 mph barrier. He turned 10.8 seconds on the record-breaking run. He made five runs during the day, beginning with 137, then 143, 146, 149, and finishing with his record-setting 151.26 before halting when a brake drum failed under the severe usage. On Sep. 11 at San Fernando, he took a win in the dragster class with 139.51 mph, taking it easy in preparation for the Nationals at Great Bend. He didn't compete in the eliminations because of mechanical difficulties. In mid-September, newspapers announced that Fritz Burns would sponsor Mickey's dragster. It would be named the "Panorama City Special." Burns was a realtor, home builder, and chief financier of San Fernando Drag Strip. It was also at this time that Thompson started his duties as manager of the new Lions Drag Strip. With Burns' sponsorship, the dragster underwent a new transformation. They replaced the old cardboard body with a semi-enveloped fiberglass body with an aircraft-type bubble canopy over the driver compartment. Bob Sorrell, of Inglewood, designed, built, and fitted the new body. He towed the dragster to the U.S. Nationals at Great Bend, where promoters ballyhooed a match race between Thompson and Lloyd Scott's twin-engined Bustle Bomb. On Saturday, Oct. 1 at Great Bend, Scott turned 151.95 mph to Thompson's 141.58 mph. Upon returning to California, Thompson devoted his time to his duties at Lions Drag Strip and began working on a new twin-engine dragster. Notes: On the drawing boards for three years and in construction for six months, this dual-engined $8,000 dragster debuted at Lions with Fritz Voigt driving on June 21. Kenny Droesbeck from Norwalk, a partner with Paul Nicolini in the Sidewinder dragster, was a partner in the operation. Voigt and Mickey Thompson shared driving duties until they towed it back east with the intention of racing at the U.S. Nationals. En route, they stopped at Bonneville Salt Flats, where Thompson ran 294 mph, becoming the fastest living American driver. After Bonneville, they returned to California, never getting to the Nationals. His appetite whetted for land speed racing, Mickey returned to begin work on his 4-engine Challenger I. Before going to the Salt Flats, Mickey made some good runs in his dual-engine dragster. The day after the car's debut at Lions, Mickey drove at San Fernando on June 22, clocking 10.45 at 147.29 mph. On July 6 at Pomona, Mickey turned 9.80 at 146.10 mph. At San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip on July 20, Mickey got Top Eliminator, clocking best times of 10.04 and 144.92 mph.
